12:00 AM
^Google's first production rack

lol

Rob
Woa

@WesleyDavid I prefer my production racks to be at least a C cup

That's the new American average, or so they say.

lol

12:03 AM
Steroid infused meat FTW!

C cup

@WesleyDavid And plastics
or something

@Holocryptic silicon

I dispute those findings. C isn't trivial.

@WesleyDavid Correct, but they are nice regardless of the angle you're using to look at them

12:05 AM
i just checked out amazon EC2 rates its says for a standard on demand instances(Large) its .38 US$/hr that makes it 273 US$/month

hides

i dont knw but i assume that plan might be equivalent to a VPS

@lovesh Yeah, that's about right. $300 for an EC2 medium sized instance
Nah, that's way more than just a VPS as far as performance. THat could handle a fairly massive site.

like a site with daily bandwidth of 1 gb or more

something like that

12:11 AM
can u point out some important things i should be knowing abt apache like SSI,or different mods that shud help me manage the VPS.i m comfortable with bash

I'm really not an apache guru, so I'd say just pick up a solid apache book and start administering a site and you'll pick stuff up on the way.

thanks
@WesleyDavid i appreciate ur help

You're welcome!

can i follow u on twitter so can have a reference ?

12:22 AM
followed
thanks again for the help
see u soon

later!
FFS @jcolebrand are you in enough stack exchange rooms? Geez... =)

one can never be in too many rooms (:
returns to the shadows to lurk

@WesleyDavid nope, keeps me well connected in case I need to take care of something ;)
also returns to the shadows of the corner of the room

HEY THAT'S MY SHADOW! GET YER OWN!!

Now now children. No fighting or the Server Elf will zero out your MBRs.

12:30 AM
):

@RebeccaChernoff I did, I went to the corner. You just were in the shadow
Also, you two don't know what lurk means do you? Someone should @me to get my attention again :p

haha
I had a sneaking suspicion you were still around (:

I just saw Wes's comment about "now now"
fortunately this monitor is large enough to show me three rooms at a time
That's not saying much tho

@jcolebrand The attribute boils beneath the fellow parody.

Hey I do have a Q for this room tho

12:33 AM
@jcolebrand The weapon tiles the dummy behind an applicable native.

I need to boot a dead laptop, I don't have a burner handy, but I have a 2GB stick

@jcolebrand Whatever postage condones each rigorous concert opposite a lifestyle.
(You said to @ you, you didn't say with what)

I would prefer to boot with something Windows based
@WesleyDavid so long as it's to get my attention when I'm lurking, it doesn't matter
However, I really just want to verify that I can read the HDD (as opposed to it needs to be replaced)
any ideas?

Hmm... 2GB bootable Windows-based USB... step 1) start drinking, step 2) cry deeply

lol

12:35 AM
Yeah, you can wedge ubcd4win.com on a USB drive with xboot I think

Do you have a SF Q or a walkthrough by chance?
or is that link enough?
I normally just wait until I have a burner handy, but thats' not an option here, sadly

seems more SUish than SFish.

That link isn't enough, no. It's just for the windows based ubcd. As for wedging an image onto a USB drive, that should be just a search away. Lemme check

@RebeccaChernoff except these guys are often wizards, and I like wizards
if it helps I have two USB sticks

hrm... bootable USB drives have always been tricky
Ta da! That guy's accent is thicker than me in a calculus midterm.

12:40 AM
@WesleyDavid aye

Sounds like he's juggling ferrets with his tongue.

Do you think I should go ask the SU folks as well?

I think it's a topic that is likely to be common there. I'd be surprised if there wasn't one that was definitive already. Lemme check

Q: Write bootable ISO to USB drive

JomOkay, existing answers list programs I do not want to use. I know that it's possible using only basic UNIX tools because I've done it. I know that I want to copy the iso to the pendrive using dd, but what do I do before that? I assume I need to make the drive bootable. How do I do it (in (g)parte...

Ohhh, make a PXE server so you can netboot everything you want.
Yes, that's a typical SysAdmin. Threading a needle with a rocket propelled grenade.

lol

Q: Creating USB Disk from bootable CD

iJeevesI have a recovery CD ISO image. As my CD drive is not working, I was wondering whether I can create a bootable pen drive out of that?

12:44 AM
like I said, wizards ;)
I don't have a desktop box around right now, or I would have that in a VM on the localnet server
Only rolling with laptops atm, and ... yeah
I do what I can with what I have, ya know?
Ok, so now I'm tasked with I don't know if I have a Windows ISO handy ... :(
cos that microsoft tool looks really handy. Oh hard drive where be you

The ubcd4Win thing is the full ISO already there. It somehow skates around Windows licensing issues somehow
best to not ask too many questions
But after 6 or 7 years with no cease and desist orders, I'm confident enough to use it

ok, so that has pretty much all I need, can it repair a bootloader on win7?
Also, the installer is free, it's the license that you have to have from Microsoft.
They generally make the ISOs freely downloadable, if you just ask.
Just most people don't realize that and try to skirt things

Oh heck, Windows 7 bootloader... unlikely. You'll need a Win 7 CD for that

isn't the win iso > 2gb? also how do you not have anything bigger than 2gb?

@RebeccaChernoff because I haven't ever needed a 4GB USB stick. But I'm always taking donations. Got any good swag over there at SE HQ?
I've already appeared in public leading a social group in a SE T ;)
@RebeccaChernoff I think some are smaller. I gotta go find my HDD
@WesleyDavid first I wanna make sure it's readable at all, so ... UB should work

12:50 AM
@jcolebrand whistles innocently

@RebeccaChernoff that's what I thought

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah, you sent me all those cool branded stickers, and pens, and hard drives, and laptops and things... you can surely spare a USB drive for poor, poor @jcolebrand

See, you sent him a lap ... lap .. a whatnow @WesleyDavid?
I can see I need to break out my sad puppy dog face here

@WesleyDavid we had a deal! you were never to speak of that!

12:52 AM
@jcolebrand ...and a 30 inch Apple cinema screen and a Apple Air and an Ipad...

@WesleyDavid lol

@RebeccaChernoff So... wait... I shouldn't mention the ServerFault Maserati either? D=

you're gonna have to send it all back now.

@WesleyDavid You sound like a Dean

/quietly panhandles in the corner... next to the shadow

12:53 AM
You're gonna have to outrace me in it. =P

1:11 AM
@WesleyDavid You didn't announce my twittance quite like that. Damn you!

But I did hire that singing bear-o-gram for you, so it's a wash.

You did? Hm. Did you put a 'GA' or an 'OH' on the address?

haha, I'm semi famous now

@WesleyDavid hi just had one more doubt. In the disk space on vpszone they show 30 gb. does that include the OS installation space too?

1:47 AM
@lovesh That I believe is inclusive of your entire server, including OS files. So think of it as a 30GB hard drive that you then install your OS and other things on.
After the OS is installed you'll have... what... about 29.7 GB left? Something like that.

Unless you install win2k8, then you'll have like .5 GB left

Where that list of privs that a SE user gets relative to his/her reputation?

/reputation I thought
nope

No, but that does remind me to do my rep recalc

1:51 AM
lawlwut... first time I ever gained reputation for a recalc.
Thanks for the link. How'd you find it?

I'm special and the world is my oyster
Go to your profile, and click on your rep amount
Aren't you supposed to be doing some WP hacking?

2:07 AM
Wow @Womble - you're hardcore. Hit the rep cap on 18 of the last 30 days.

2:30 AM
@WesleyDavid wow the whole OS in 300 mb
@WesleyDavid VPSZONE says that they backup all my data so should i still backup data on my disk space? i mean r there any corner cases to that?

2:46 AM
@lovesh Yes, always backup your own stuff. VPSZone backs up their stuff, but honestly I have no idea at what intervals and for how long nor do I know how fast a restoration is.
So rsync your stuff and test your backups.

@ChrisS Is that a bat in a sombrero?

thanks

@Holocryptic Hedgehog wrapped in a t-shirt wearing a sombrero.

@ChrisS Oh. That totally makes sense now.
@ChrisS You're here kinda late.

I've got a 256MB UFD with Windows PE on it. Works great for booting an older computer to zero the hard drive.

2:58 AM
ah, I love those lightweight PE images

in Root Access, 58 secs ago, by jcolebrand
Does anyone know of an nLite/vLite for Win7?

The one I PXE boot is getting fatter and fatter... Keep having to add new NIC and HBA drivers to it for new hardware. I think it's almost 300MB now.

At my old company, the recovery console that was used for BM restores was a PXE environment with some skins added
It was a complete pain in the ass

I use WinPE for BM ops. I like simply having a command prompt, stuff works just the same as opening a copy of cmd.exe, keeps things simple.

Well, when you have custom exe's running in it that are necessary to perform the BMR, but that craps all over itself for lack of resources, especially when you're trying to debug it. Not fun. Educational, but not fun.

3:13 AM
Yeah; nothing terribly odd. I take images using imagex (an MS utility, same one they use for making images for Windows Installer). Use SCDPM for backups, it's got a command line utli for restoring BM style (which I've never had to do other than practice).

Hm, sounds very homebrew. I like it.

It's a little home-brew... But it's just common stuff. If you sat down with the command prompt and messed with it a bit you'd figure it out right quick... How it should be, any god SA can figure it out without the documentation, and the documentation is there if they get stuck on something odd.

Yeah, I need to get more familiar with the CLI. The few times I've had to do anything CLI heavy, I felt totally awesome after I got done with it.
whuf, I'm off to bed. I just hit a wall. 'Night @ChrisS. Don't stay up too late

night

4:13 AM
We're psychic now.

Q: sfdisk + restore

DavidI need to know if its right to perfrom sfdisk on "Extended" and "Linux swap" partitions? or maybe I need to remove the "Extended" and "Linux swap" lines from the c0d0-partition-info.sfdisk file? sfdisk --force /dev/cciss/c0d0 < c0d0-partition-info.sfdisk more c0d0-partition-info.sfdisk # pa...

I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 100...

7, obviously.

G'day

7:20 AM
hey

7:42 AM
hi

8:07 AM
This question makes no sense to me, why are his VMs on different RDP ports? serverfault.com/questions/296538/…

I think that they are on different ports is unrelated to the issue he has. As to why - I guess he doesn't understand that the same port on different hosts is a different port

8:52 AM
Morning

9:03 AM
My rep is mocking me - I made a concious effort to get over 500 rep this week and its sitting at 499... and laughing

9:43 AM
I hope to get 10k for the year and 15k overall this week - gotta answer some questions though :)

My father-in-law died last February and since his wife died about 25 years ago he had 'discovered' his alternate sexuality, he never really spoke to us about it but it was quite clear he was gay and loving it. At his funeral about 50 very flamboyant strangers came to pay their respects, which was lovely actually. Anyway since we had his mail redirected to us we periodically get some staggeringly graphic post from various magazine/dvd/'product' companies in that arena.
so I always have to call/email/fax them to tell them he died and take him of their list. Well we just got a super 'out-there' catalogue from one company this morning, never seen or heard of some of the things in it (and I have a lot of gay friends) - so just had a very odd call to Amsterdam to change a mailing list :)
@Iain I'm hoping for about 52k by year end. But right now I'm more excited about another badge I've very close to :)

@Chopper3 would that be the Epic badge by any chance ? I was pleased by getting Generalist which I was surprised to find how close I was when I checked on data.sx recently. It made me do some work in areas where I'm weaker

might be

I'M 400 \o/ a little victory for me!
I'm pleased!

@Chopper3 <Hong Kong Phooey> Could be </Hong Kong Phooey>

10:08 AM
@Chopper3 duuuh, Did he forget that google exist for this kind of question?
Wonder if it must be flag as not a real question...

1 hour later…
11:10 AM
Seriously great New Yorker article about the Bin Laden operation - newyorker.com/reporting/2011/08/08/…
switched on a new storagetek SL8500 library this last night, turns out our symantec pre-sales muppet's not sold us the right licences (or not enough anyway) - so that's a new PO needs raising plus the delay in that going through the system before we can get the licences and make the bloody thing work :(

Symantec sales are muppets
We don't back up some devices because we were sold the incorrect license, so they've always been if they die we rebuild

11:26 AM
that's balls isn't it - it's not like this was a small order for them, bit tired of kicking sales people in the bollocks recently

Honestly, I feel we should be tough on Symantec and tough on the causes of Symantec

:)

11:50 AM
Oh well, time for a quick round of 'George Plimpton's Video Falconry'; newgrounds.com/portal/view/571422

12:24 PM
@Chopper3 I really don't understand what you could possible like about that game...

it's shit, I like it because it's shit
and the hawk noise, that too

12:43 PM
@Chopper3 very addictive...

far, far more than it should be right?

@Chopper3 Sounds like burnout when you're tired of kicking sales people in the nuts, because really, how does that get tiring?

Oh dear, work is cancelled for today

@ITHedgeHog Not here =[

@ITHedgeHog: Why?

12:47 PM
points at @Chopper3's falconry game The team is playing this now

I'm still stuck on Angry Birds (Chrome Beta); I've beat them all, just trying to get 3 stars now...

@BartSilverstrim bit burnt out in general to be honest

Sorry to hear that.

my own fault, too many overlapping things

If it makes you feel better you could think about how you're becoming an avatar meme.

12:55 PM
@Chopper3 We're looking for a junior Developer if you want a change of pace? ;) :P

@ChrisS 3 Stars everywhere... Ugh, I know that pain. For a little while I was convinced every board was beatable with a single bird. I no longer hold this foolish belief.

@ITHedgeHog haha - you wouldn't want me doing that, not at all

@jscott Some aren't, but most are. And on most you have to beat it with 1 bird, to get the 3 stars.
Alternately, you have to cause massive destruction. That's worked for me a few times.

1:32 PM
Anyone have experience playing with Xcode?

1:48 PM
Morning, mutants

Greetings, Xavier.

I'm hungry

...there's not much we can do about that.

2:07 PM
@BartSilverstrim my son has yes

@Chopper3: I tried watching some video tutorials on using Xcode and Obj-C and it made my head swirl a little.
I was thinking of trying to learn to use the language since 10.7 lets you use a free version of Xcode from the App Store, but I'm beginning to think I should try Python instead.
I wondered if Xcode was really kind of a head zinger or if it was just the intro stuff to Obj-C that was bugging me.

@jscott xD

2:28 PM
Ever have so many projects that you feel behind on all of them? I'm struggling a bit now to keep a single project in my head, and even this one has so many undefined requirements that I can't get a clear view of the whole scope.

Put it aside until you get the requirements, otherwise you're just spinning your wheels.

What @Holocryptic said

@WesleyDavid I ended going back to rimuhosting.com. Got a nice discount there.

What @ITHedgeHog said.

what happened to this room. Now they talk of scope, projects and requirements.
:P

2:33 PM
What kind of bees make milk? Boo-bees!

Better?

@jscott what @BartSilverstrim said

better now

how is @coredump ?

@coredump Sorry 'bout that.... Trying to remain positive. Socialize with my peers. etc.... Next time I will resort the usual bitching, complaining, etc.
:)

We all need to complain here. Then we feel better and symbolize this with the commiseration of boobs. Some would say this is symbolic of more than that, though.

2:38 PM
@iain fine, not much time to hang around here but fine.

good to hear it

@coredump rim-u-hosting? really?

@Chopper3 It's a tasty way to host.

Yoda got a BlackBerry and is trying to configure Exchange to work with it.

2:54 PM
@BartSilverstrim It can't be as difficult as lifting an X-Wing from a swamp bog, can it?

It's Exchange. You've already crossed to the Dark Side when you start working with Exchange connectors.

heh

It's well known that unicorns are powered by rainbows and glitter. But much like Voldemort, Exchange is kept running by periodically eating unicorns. That's the dark secret of MS fans...they point out the rainbows in glitter in the Exchange server, but they don't tell you where they come from.

@Holocryptic I used to post on another non-IT board years ago and one guy on there, must have been a few years younger than me, well his dad was a movie electrician and his dad had taken him to the set of ESB when it was being made and in amongst all these regular family photos he had ones of him with his hand inside the yoda doll talking to Oz, sat in the x-wing cockpit, on luke's shoulders etc. Mad eh?

@Chopper3 /jealous

3:06 PM
I was too

/me Jealous Rage
I wondered if Mark Hamill is cool in person or not.

Who cares
he was Luke

He's THE JOKER

he can be the biggest asshole and still awesome

Being both Luke and the Joker makes him composed of pure awesome meat.
I've read that Bill Nye is an ass in person...made me sad.

3:12 PM
@BartSilverstrim He was also the Fire Lord

LOTS of star are idiots, having lived in London and NYC for long periods I'd say a lot of them are, there are some nice ones but lots are tools

That's a shame.
I suppose some of it is the pressure of having strangers constantly think they know you...some of it might be the ability to never worry about really getting your way or worrying about bills...
I guess the shame is realizing how you find people you place on pedestals don't deserve to be there.

@BartSilverstrim ... don't place people on pedistals ?
get a rocking chair and a shotgun full of rocksalt

Well, you shouldn't logically put them there.
I think it's natural to do that with celebrities, since they project a certain image that portrays an ideal.
We forget that they're still human.
So I suppose we fall for the ideal and forget the rest or ignore the rest of their foibles.

true

3:21 PM
I was really sad to hear rumor of Bill Nye's behavior towards production staff and fans...he was a childhood hero of sorts, teaching science and skeptical thinking.
Others seem like they'd be interesting to meet in person, like Wil Wheaton.
But they're all human. I just get to "meet" their public personas :-)
Make me a celebrity and I shall donate my fortune to Charity! By the way, my celebrity name will be Bart Charity Silverstrim

A have a couple of vaguely famous mates - one has never let his success affect him, the other loves the upsides but resents the downsides, can be a bit of a dick sometimes but at least he knows it

@BartSilverstrim I've heard that was largely untrue, though he dislikes signing autographs or something like that. I know he used to do stand-up comedy or something like that too..

@ChrisS: about Bill Nye?
There was some discussion on Reddit about him not too awfully long ago, from some AMA from someone who was on one of the TV shows. Son of a producer. The usual redditors from the woodwork thing followed, some stories seemed credible though. Take them for what they are.
Smart guy, won't deny that. Head of the planetary society now I think.
He was at TAM last I heard.
The Amazing Meeting.

3:39 PM
@BartSilverstrim Yeah; those sources are usually something like that, family relation of someone who might actually know.... Always sounds like "a friend of a friend told me xyz" to me.

Gist of it was that Nye was nice to him, and he was young at the time, but it could have been because he was <producer's> son.
And he claimed to witness not-nice behavior/attitude towards staff.
Seemed to be as the show got more popular.
Some said something about celebrity going to his head.
But again, all claims that were made by strangers online.

you guys watching c-span?

No, but I guess they're going to vote on the bill in about 10 minutes

No TV here.
What's going on, the bill to raise the debt ceiling?
Voting as to whether the guv'mint should pay its bills?
Anyone flinging poo on the Senate floor?

Throw a shoe! Throw a shoe!

3:50 PM
They're always flinging poo, when they're not showering in it

not watching but doesn't it mean the US debt will be higher than GDP? isn't that scary?

the whole thing is scary...

As I recall...since I don't understand this worth a damn...the debt is the result of the economic crisis.
I.e., face the music time.
budget cuts won't "solve" it.
Which probably means it only gets worse from here.

@Chopper3 If you count privately purchased US debt it already is. The debt they're talking about is Publicly traded debt (which is the vast majority).

ah ok

3:56 PM
The part I find hilariously sad is that we have millionaires and billionaires debating whether they should pay their bills on the congressional floor...while they're the same type of people who put the screws to the middle class and poor when those people can't afford things due to various reasons.

what with greece, now italy and spain in the shit I'm (for once) glad to be a brit

@BartSilverstrim Debt is the result of defect spending... Simple as that. Stop spending so darn much and you wont be in debt.

Italy and Spain are having issues now?
@ChrisS: I was hoping that was an oversimplification, as that was what I thought the problem was to begin with.
See, I have an idea like that, and it gets re-explained to me like I'm a mental defective.

Everyone is waking up to the fact that you can't just keep spending money hoping growth/inflation/future_revenue will cover your ass when the debt collector comes.

@Chopper3 We should never have broken away. UKP has been 2*USD pretty much my whole financial life...
@ChrisS WHAT????????

3:59 PM
I'm thinking that if "everyone has to sacrifice" then those assholes on the hill can take a 50% pay cut.

yeah, Italy and Spain are screwed

@BartSilverstrim Nope. The fact of the matter is that they've been spending way too much for a long time now. For a while they hid it as unfunded benefits (still do to a large extent), but now those benefits are coming due (medicare and social security for instance) and they're draining our current budget.

Listening to the whole debate and issue stuff makes my head hurt. I need to tune in to select propaganda on Fox News to tell me what to think...then I feel better.
@Holocryptic: I've seen that idea slung around as well. It doesn't make much sense, other than to make them "feel the pain." Which it wouldn't since most of them are privately wealthy anyway.

In the UK there's too many tax breaks for business and the rich, suspect the same is true in the US (I know it is, just being polite)

@BartSilverstrim It's all propoganda at some level
@BartSilverstrim Right, then they won't mind not taking any pay then...

4:01 PM
@BartSilverstrim I wouldn't want to get caught being a Fox proponent, but most of their bull is currently slanted toward partial solutions (which is better than blindly ignoring problems)

Usually from facebook slacktivists that say something about preserving our brave hero soldier's pay and cut the politician's pay instead.
Even though there are far far more soldiers than idiots on the Hill, so the savings isn't the same to do that...
(although I'm not saying I support or don't support cutting soldier's pay or anything like that, since I don't know the economics involved.)
@Holocryptic: I don't know what they'd support for pay. I'm just saying it's foolish to think cutting their pay is going to matter. It's like CEO's making billions...Steve Job's pay is a dollar a year. He's illustrating that they are rich for other reasons (investments, stocks, etc.)

The push button tactics being employed in Libya right now show the effectiveness of a few people and a handful of drones. Time to bring the soldier home and deploy the terminators. (tongue in cheek)

We could always stop playing world police :-)
@Chopper3: We have a lot of people that are screaming to increase taxes on the rich...

Right, @Bart. I just noticed that you are, in fact, not @Chopper3. Damn you.

That has me confused to no end too Scott

4:05 PM
What I don't hear is how much it would actually be needed if we closed the tax loopholes and just had a flat, fair tax on everyone.

Well what do you want? A flat tax, or a fair tax? Two things

I'm auditioning to become his minion. :-)
I don't know what the revenue generated would be.

@BartSilverstrim There aren't enough "rich" to make up the difference.... unless you want them to pay 90% tax rates (and if you think they'll stick around after you do that, Google "Double Irish")

Does this include the loopholes and benefits that allow companies to basically pay next to nothing, or rules taken advantage of to keep the top tiny percent from paying as much?
I honestly don't know.

@BartSilverstrim Yep. That's it.
People with resources have the resources to know how to avoid taxes....

4:08 PM
Yes. There should be ways to NOT avoid them.

Our number one priority should not be increasing tax or cutting spending (per-se), but rather realizing savings through increasing efficiency.

Something about the idea of, "He has more than I do, he should be forced to give more" that bothers me. Don't know why. But what bothers me more is when someone has more and it's through dirty dealing that he holds onto it.

There's no reason a government cant't work efficiently. Ours does not; the way it's structured, it will not; and we need change, not the type Obama promised either.

I'd just like to know what can be done by cutting spending to living within the country's means and closing loopholes that let people use tricks to keep from paying taxes.

may be one way to do it... themoneyillusion.com/…

4:11 PM
@ChrisS Ugh.... neither does Canada's. Doesn't help that our PM has a serious hard-on for the USA.

What the hell? I have a question with 10k views and i didn't get the badge for that
im assuming its because the views are rounded up. is there a way to see the actual # of views?

@Holocryptic I'll have to read up on that... I always like a new view on things.

@BartSilverstrim how about "He has more than I do, yet his expensive lobbyists/lawyers/accountants ensure he pays next to no tax" - think that's how things are today - I should complain myself, I do very well tax-wise but at least I admit it.

I do very well tax-wise until they eliminate the deduction for mortgage interest
at that point I cry rape.

@MarkM hover over it I think

I find that the complicated system behind our tax codes is a wonderful pain in the ass that creates too many shadows for gremlins to hide behind.

@Holocryptic haha, well that sure was easy

@Chopper3: that is the part where I was hinting at dirty dealing to hold on to his money.
If those expensive accountants/etc. didn't have any loopholes to use to keep his money...just a plain tax on income...that's where I wondered how much money that would make/lose.
Same with corporations that make millions or billions and pay nothing after fancy bookkeeping tricks.

@BartSilverstrim Agreed. Simple rule: Any person or corporation doing business in $_COUNTRY shall return 33% of its gross income to the government.

I don't understand the laws or situation enough to proclaim myself an armchair solutionist, but it seems more common-sensy to me that the more you reduce complication the easier it would be to fix a system.

Edward Lewis Brown (born 1942) and his wife, Elaine Alice Brown (born c. 1940), residents of the state of New Hampshire, gained national news media attention in early 2007 for not paying the U.S. federal income tax and refusing to surrender to federal government agents after having been convicted of tax crimes. After the conviction and sentencing, a long, armed standoff with federal law enforcement authorities at their New Hampshire residence ended with the arrest of Edward and Elaine Brown on October 4, 2007. In July 2009, while serving their sentences for the tax crimes, the Browns were ...

if you want a clause in there that the corporation must (a) show a profit, or (b) have gross revenue over $THRESHOLD, I'm OK with that too, so it's not a total business killer.

At the same time the government isn't, in my opinion, entitled to everything the citizens make simply because they (The government) spends more than they bring in. It should be a crime that the government shames its citizens for doing what it itself is doing.

@BartSilverstrim no government should be allowed to exist with a budget in deficit. (Says the man who lives in a nation, state, and county that currently run a deficit.)

@voretaq7: what you said.
But again...I'm not an economist.
Just a laymen with a simple understanding and complex misunderstanding of the issue :-)
As far as I'm concerned the government should not be able to tax the hell out of people simply because it overspends. And nor should local governments be able to do this. If you tax, then provide services to compensate for it. I.e., a % of my taxes should go to my healthcare. A % of my taxes should go to my future retirement. SOCIALIZM! OMG!
:-)

Back in High School they made everyone take Home Economics.
You had to prepare a family budget.
If you couldn't balance the budget you had to give something up.

Congress can't balance our federal budget. They should have to give something up - How about that FREE HEALTHCARE they get? or THAT PENSION ABOVE AND BEYOND SOCIAL SECURITY that they get?
TURN OFF THE CABLE IN THE CONGRESSIONAL CLOAKROOMS! RAGEFACE!
OK I'm done now :)

...they can't balance the budget, but they punish you if you can't pay your bills to them.

Yep. If a "normal" person did 1/4 of what they pull up there, they'd be in jail for fraud and extortion

I could only dream of being that rich and powerful... :-)
We can't close the loopholes because the American Dream is for me to get into that top 1% club!

Up until now, you had to be a USENIX member to watch videos and listen to sessions from conferences…no more. Yesterday, they released hundreds and hundreds of hours of audio and video presentations from dozens of conferences from the past 6 years! This is amazing, and I think they deserve a lot of credit [...]
