@KronoS: wiki.dropbox.com/DropboxAddons/DropboxPortable then set up each account to autorun it?
or run it in a VM, and let your users add files to it via smb. less performance, clunky but simpler

2 hours later…
2:53 AM
any SU super amazing users lurking?
Does anyone know of an nLite/vLite for Win7?
I presume from the 2008 release that vLite isn't written for 7

Oh noez, @jcolebrand has invaded SU!!
Hm. I am fairly certain that there is no equivalent for Windows 7

I haz???

but if you want to roll your own, look at the WAIK

I want to end up with something with Win7 on a USB stick
however, I only have a win7 stick
that easter egg is hilarious

msfn.org/board has a whole lot of info about customizing windows installs with things like vLite btw. You may find that useful.

3:03 AM
hmm, there was one... but not by the same people..
rt7lite.com i've never used it, nor do i know how dodgy it is

some googling turns up this: intowindows.com/install-windows-7-on-usb
@jcolebrand to clarify, you want to install Windows 7 onto a USB drive?
you could actually ask the question on SU, too ;)

no
I am trying to recover a system, and think it's the bootloader that's affected
I don't have a DVD drive, so can't burn one

OH
Totally misunderstood

that's easy, I think we have an article about it on SU

3:05 AM
that's a different issue ;p

Q: Install Windows 7 from USB

nateifyI have an ISO of the Windows 7 installation DVD, but I don't have a CD/DVD big enough to burn it to. I have an empty flash drive with plenty of space; is there anyway I can put the ISO on it and install from it as if it were a CD?

I assume you want to do that so you can run the recovery tools?

I only have 2GB of space
and my current box is Windows XP

@jcolebrand 2 GB on your USB drive?

Aye
but I have two of them

@jcolebrand do you have access to MSDN or TechNet downloads?

3:08 AM
I don't think I do anymore, no
What do you have in mind, I may have it here

desktop optimization pack 2009

nope

contains installer to create a Microsoft Emergency Rescue Disk
which is basically a windows 7 boot disk, but smaller because it doesn't have any of the installer stuff, and has extra fancy repair tools
if you ever come across a copy, keep it ;)

Dragging you over to G+

@jcolebrand check out this: reboot.pro/forum/22

superuser.com/questions/317916/… the poster seems to have included pix but its not showing up...

Q: Image uploads with imgur.com currently down

OddthinkingWhen I try to insert an image using the upload tool, I get: I'm running the current version of Chrome on Windows, with a number of SE-related user-scripts. Confirmed by several other users, so not just me.

@JourneymanGeek wiped

6:56 AM
morning all

7:13 AM
hmmm, anyone else having trouble uploading images using the SE image uploaders?

@DMA57361: apparently uploading to imgur is down via SE

right, not just me then :)

3 hours later…
10:04 AM
isn't that and that and that spam?
three different users even

looks like spam to me, good catch

aaand burninated

yep, there was even a fourth kicking about too

dammit. @dma beat me :(

Q: How Can i get the mac address and ip address from existing system. Plz give me code

user748447How Can i get the mac address and ip address from existing system. Plz give me code

I was just looking at that again

@DMA57361 what about, you know, "work" :P

eheh
obvious troll is obvious?

10:09 AM
@Sathya now that's a crazy suggestion
naa, it's just the lull before the storm at the moment
A-level results (and so a mad scramble for Uni places) is in two weeks and we're expecting to be hammered because this is the last year before fees jump by about ×2.5

Q: how to hide an if statment? or whatever technique can be done?

sasoriI have an external javascript file, and it has multiple if statements, the problem is, one of the if statements is still being called even if the form is hidden. my application goes like this, - when a user is logged-in, hide this particular input form - if not logged-in, show the input form so...

I didn't understand that
but then again I only had 4hrs of sleep

10:27 AM
@slhck lol, they even changed their own "an" as well as yours :)

Oh well, if they want it like that they can keep it :P

@slhck done :p

lol

congrats to @techie007 on 10k!

even a perfect 10.000

10:50 AM
not often that we see this superuser.com/questions/317733/…

@Sathya Yep - it's actually the second "thanks", the first one was deleted
I think it also helped the question to survive

11:10 AM
yeah, very much so. there are 2 votes on it, I doubt it'll get closed now @slhck

12:09 PM
BARGAIN - ONLY ONE LEFT - QUICK>>>>

@Linker3000 wow, and there's even over three hours to get the order in for delivery tomorrow! :D

I am updating from VS 2005 pro to VS 2010 pro .. do I need to remove VS 2005 first ?

@HackToHell no idea, not a VS user

@HackToHell You shouldn't need to – normally the VS2010 installer should detect that. No guarantee though.
Maybe ask in Stack Overflow chat or something

ok
Installer does not detect VS 20005 continuing installation ...

12:36 PM
laters, folks

2 hours later…
2:20 PM
Morning everyone.

@SimonSheehan hello

How's it going @DMA57361?

meh, chugging along as usual, you?

Just waking up, starting on some Photoshop work today.

lucky you, want to swap it for my tedious busy work? :P

2:24 PM
Perhaps ;) What are you working on?

nothing, that's the problem

Ouch. Doesn't sound too good then. What do you normally do?

database bits and general tech support; often not much more than "nothing" sometimes tbh :(

No ones breaking anything today to be fixed? :/

not even that level of TS, I'm not with IT, I'm the data-guy in a department, so I get called up for any little thing the girls in the office have trouble with
so things like pressing F11 for them when they've got the browser stuck in fullscreen and other joys :P

2:28 PM
@DMA57361 Could be worse :P I used to help out around my school a lot, and the most common issue: Why is my printer not working? Reason: they put USB cords into ethernet ports.

@SimonSheehan oh yeah, I complain but I'm getting a free degree and mostly flexible hours out of the deal, so it's not all bad
it's just really dragging because it's the school hols so I'm actually working full time again

@DMA57361 Well once your done your degree, I'm sure you'll be able to find more exciting work. You'll have job experience, that's a big bonus.

exactly
but this assumes I don't get made redundant in the coming wave, so that doesn't help with making me more complain-happy

Ah, I see. Hey, at least you do have some work. I can't even find a part time job :/

yeah, it's not the best time to be hunting

2:33 PM
Unfortunately no. I'm holding off again until September when all the university and college kids go back, and I may have a better chance

I really need to fill in my profile on SO careers and make it available for employers to find, just in case something good floats along
unlikely, but you never know

Yeah. I was hoping maybe I could find some sort of tech-related part time job, even if it was Best Buy or something, but that doesn't seem available here

this is my first tech-related job :) the degree means they get me stuck here for over 6 years, but I've at least managed to get it upgraded once

How many years have you finished so far? And what is the degree in?

4 out of 6, and it's a generic Computer Science BSc

2:36 PM
Sounds cool. Unfortunately I can't actually get into university without going to college first

I guess we're looking at language differences here, because "College" in the UK is what effectively everyone goes to between 16-18 to get the qualifications for Uni anyway

College here is after high school, and usually when your 18. It's a more hands-on type of university, so you would be actually DOING the subject, and less theory stuff. Generally you still take math though.

ah right, sounds like a old Polytechnic style Uni
some of those here are specialised, but they're all called "Universities" nowadays

Interesting. Here in high school, we have 4 levels of classes - Workplace, College, Mixed, and University. Mixed is university/college in one really.
But i'm mostly in mixed and college courses
So i can't go to university before going to college
Ultimately I would like to, as I do want a degree

@SimonSheehan hmmm, presumably just because you're not getting the qualifications you need at high school?

2:42 PM
@DMA57361 I take college level math, so I don't have the qualifications for university. But everything else is at university level.

confusing
currently here everyone does almost the same types of qualification at each age bracket (obviously in different subjects), so they are directly comparable - if you do really well, you can get in to a good Uni regardless of where you studied

Indeed, but that's our bizzare system here.

well we're soon moving to 18 being the compulsory school leaving age (was 16), so changes are in the pipe line to allow those less academically inclined to do less academic qualifications, I guess we're moving in that direction

Yeah, sounds like it.
Courses for next year, Already got my schedule

quite a mix

2:46 PM
English, religion, and math are compulsory, and the rest I took every tech class, then just filled in with fitness and auto shop

f/e
you guys get a much more varied choice than us I think

In our first and second year its VERY limited, but the 3rd and 4th are pretty much whatever you want.

I did ICT, Maths, Further Maths, History and Physics at college (16-18), each for two years with not much room for choice within each

"Information and Communication Technology"
very little computer science, much more "user" oriented
(ie, yawn)
14-16 we do a much wider mix - I did 11½ subjects IIRC - but again within each there is no variation

2:50 PM
Ah. The computer science course I selected I'm a bit concerned about - I'm afraid it may by visual basic :/

ah, well VB's not all bad... :/
afternoon @TomWijsman, haven't seen you around these parts for a while

I feel VB might just be a bit of a waste of my time though :/ I mean I'm sure there's lots you can do with it - but its not really employable.

Jul 12 at 21:49, by Tom Wijsman
(Please Star) I'm going on vacation for two weeks, see you later! :)

Also, welcome back @TomWijsman, how was your vacation?

@DMA57361: That turned out to be three weeks.

2:52 PM
@TomWijsman that'd be why then! have fun?

Good morning to @Linker3000 also

And argh, typing on my laptop feels so weird right now.
@SimonSheehan: Very good. :)
Went to Italy, been to Calabria, Venezia and Ceriale.

Oh lovely, always wanted to go to Italy.

@SimonSheehan true, if you've programmed before it's probably not so good, otherwise it'll teach you the basics (if you have programmed before it might at least teach you a different way to approach problems... maybe...)
@TomWijsman nice

Greetings: 15:52 here.

2:53 PM
@DMA57361 I used to do Java about 2 years ago, I forget most of it, except the syntax and a few things.

(Venezia is nice)

@SimonSheehan well then time to learn the painful important basics again

It feels like I am using someone's else laptop, just very weird... :(

@DMA57361 Probably yes. I'm more excited for communications tech, where you make videos, photoshop, fun stuff that I enjoy doing as is

@SimonSheehan so more media than programming? Still, it's good to know the basics of a wider selection of tasks even if you don't directly use them

2:56 PM
@DMA57361 Thats why I took programming, networking, and media - To try them all.
I'd actually like to aim for a job teaching media with computers.

Hmm, Ivo's swag arrived, gonna check the post...

@SimonSheehan teaching :/ never really had the patience for that

@DMA57361 For me I think I'd enjoy it - I would get to use computers, make videos and do photoshop stuff still, and then do one thing I do a LOT - talking.

imo teaching varies wildly depending on age group. I think I could manage >=16, well maybe >=18 once that's the compulsory leaving age - basically those choosing to be there, not those there because they have to be

Yeah, I'm not interested in teaching elementary school. High school is where it's at.

3:00 PM
still, frankly, I'd rather just build stuff, but each to their own

Yeah, definitely.
Be right back in about 20 minutes..

3:13 PM

@KronoS it's quite silly, isn't it :)
right, home time, catch you all later

"A 31 year old Swedish male was arrested for trying to build a nuclear reactor in his apartment. He got hold of radioactive material thru mail-order purchases and from smoke detectors. Police raided his apartment after he had contacted the Swedish Radiation Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten) to inquire if it was legal to construct a nuclear reactor at home."

@Linker3000 :O

3:28 PM
9/10 for enthusiasm and honesty
Mind you - should probably have asked BEFORE buying all the kit!

1 hour later…
4:45 PM
@Linker3000 O_o well...
anyone else keep getting logged out of chat (happens when I move from work to home or back)?

@DMA57361 Nope – do you log out before leaving work?

@slhck only time I've ever logged out in months is so I could log back in

lol okay, well no, haven't had any issues yet

oh well, I can get in (obviously) it's just annoying

5:00 PM
Nope, no issues here

@DMA57361 Can you merge the two John A's in that Q? superuser.com/questions/316519/…

@slhck no IP or email match, doesn't look like the same user

ah, missed that

sorry, should have been more verbose :P

5:10 PM
that helps, plus it looks like it might be a home/work split given the emails used

thank you @DMA57361 :)

@DMA57361 same email hash from the gravatar, or was I late?

@Sathya it is now 'cos I've merged then

too late (... again!)

ah, f/e

5:21 PM
Ugh.. burning CDs is soooo 2000.

hi there

hello!

hey @slhck i'm new here but love this Q&A site already
you seem to be here for a while. . .

that's good to hear @Megan!
well, yeah, had my account for quite a long time before I really started participating :)

he he. . . nice place to hang out very rarely have such a targeted site.
not really a computer techie . . but yeah could be a superuser

5:30 PM
hi @Megan

hi @Sathya

I see you've been here for couple of days, welcome

@Megan You don't need to be a techie – not everybody here is ;)

oh thank you @Sathya and that its not needed to be a techie is the best thing i like about this place @slhck
@Sathya you're on chip sounds awesome. . .

@Megan yep, just trawling any some spare time there

5:35 PM
@Sathya sweet do you live in India? or NRI?

@Megan I live here

oh neat . . .

how about you?

yea me too. . . I live in India

coolio

5:38 PM
hey could you suggest a good android device . . I want to pick one up soon, I was looking at the HTC models but the 1mhz devices are priced really high
hey i got a clippy helper for that statement . . this place is full of suprises

heh, gotta love Clippy!

1mhz heh, you mean 1GHz.

well is price your most important factor?

oopss...

how much do you intend to invest?

5:40 PM
he he. . .
amm.. not more that 15000 rs at the moment

I personally own an HTC Desire (since 2010) and I absolutely love it

yea price is important coz i have a limited budget @slhck

if you can pull in another 4k, you can go for the Nexus S

is that available in india? @Sathya

5:43 PM
is samsung good?
i'm just asking . . . dont know that brand really

yeah. I've had it for about 7 months now

imo the Samsung ones have a bit of a plastic feeling, while the HTCs feel more sturdy, but that's only my two cents
both are very good though
still, the Nexus S is great

well i haven't looked at samsung models . . . and i have been eyeing the desire s for a while now but that costs 23k way over my budget

I agree with @slhck about the plastic feel about you're getting a Nexus phone at damn good price
that;s unbeatable, IMO

yea that's so true @Sathya and @slhck
well which is your dream phone @slhck and @Sathya

5:48 PM
Haven't looked into the market really. I'd probably bought the Nexus S if I didn't already have mine. Don't need a really high-end phone.

dunno, I'm no longer fascinated by mobiles, as much as I used to be

lol
the nexus is a really good alternative though would have never have looked up samsung really

heh, I kinda begin to like meta.SO

@Sathya @slhck what do you people work as?

@slhck addictive, ain't it

5:54 PM
@Megan Doing research about video quality at our university

'video quality' sounds interesting . . what exactly do you research into?

@Sathya Absolutely. And you can get to 500 rep with 2Qs and 1A O_o

@slhck lol yeah :P

@Megan Well, which factors are involved with perceived video quality, for example in mobile video streaming applications (Mobile TV, Video on Demand)
we do a lot of tests with real people, get to experiment a lot, so that's fun

@slhck oh that's fun

5:58 PM
@Megan I work as a database/application developer, specializing in Oracle PL/SQL, SQL & Oracle forms

@Sathya wow! where do you work at Chennai?

work for Logica

intense work might be real tiring

it's alright :)

well i should be hitting the sack now... see you guys around nice talking to both of you @Sathya @slhck

6:02 PM
sure, drop by soon. Good night @Megan

Sure, see you around @Megan

:)

btw @slhck any particular reason for having that handle?
(and that avatar of yours is like straight from the 70's :P (no offense) ) @slhck

@Sathya I used to have "soulhack" after a song I really liked, but once I found that being used by others I decided to strip the vowels out :D
lol

ah
but it's nice & unique, @slhck like it. ( the avatar, that is)

6:08 PM
heh thanks @Sathya :D
oh dang, gotta go
gonna see a show tonight
see you around @Sathya!

right, Im off too. have a good show @slhck

6:23 PM
@DMA57361 Don't have that problem, did have random refreshes more than a month ago. I'm surprised that I'm still logged in after three weeks while I did log in on a mobile for a quick check-up somewhere in between...

6:44 PM
Just picked up a sleek new Western Digital Elements Portable Hard Drive
500GB
