@Shads0 Yeah, I shouted at a chicken to see what would happen. Apparently the townsfolk love their chickens, and took umbrage. So I killed the villagers too.

@Shads0 that was her chicken.

I just got my first shout, its hilarious to me because it sounds like he's saying "BOOM"

I just can't get behind games like Skyrim. I played Oblivion start to finish because I felt obligated to get my money's worth.

@MarkM I played a bit of oblivion that i borrowed, didn't like it very much but I got Skyrim for only $30, and so far I really love it

Just give me Locke from FF III w/ Genji Gloves and Thief Gloves and I'm a happy person.
When I play a game, I want to be told a story. I don't want to have to seek the story out.

8:04 PM
@MarkM Skyrim is much more streamlined
It tells you where you need to go

And dual-weilding fire in a way that makes you feel like you're firing a kamehameha wave is fun =D

dual wielding anything is friggin awesome, but yeah, the effects are definitely spectacular.
That sounds less redundant

Meh, give me Espers any day.

@MarkM Luddite

@Holocryptic FoSoYa and Golbez doing Meteo to Zemus on the moon in FFII is as good as it gets.

8:10 PM
@Holocryptic That's great. Especially "You can’t jump when you’re holding a naked dead Lydia. And to get up there, jumping is pretty essential. Which meant developing a new technique that involved ‘throwing’ Lydia up the hill, then jumping, and trying to catch her again."

The balance of characters in FFIII (Sabin aside, he's boss) is also amazing considering there's 50 billion of them.
No need to play any more games, I've already beat the best ones a billion times.

3 mins ago, by Holocryptic
@MarkM Luddite

@Shads0 I was OK with the remakes of all of the Final Fantasy games where they added more spaces for spell/item names and Meteo because Meteor. I'm not opposed to change.

@ChrisS I was on the verge of giving myself up here at work. The awesome thing was that he tried it and then dropped her back down the mountain and had to do it again.

is a meta post the only way to burninate tags?

8:18 PM
I believe they go away on their own. I don't believe they get suggested if there is not questions using them.

@Shads0 they melt away when they have no questions

@ChrisS I linked that earlier. Apparently no one liked it.
Of course I linked to the article, and not the pretty picture itself

@Holocryptic That's true. It was stupid when you posted it.

8:23 PM
@Holocryptic Yeah, that one's your own fault.

@ScottPack Your face is stupid

@Holocryptic Nevermind...

@Holocryptic Not the worst thing that's been said to me today. Try again.

@ChrisS dunno, somewhere around the beginning of the day
@ScottPack That's all I got. I'm really a non confrontational kind of guy

@Holocryptic @ScottPack FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

8:26 PM
@voretaq7 Meh. That's sounds like effort.

Huh? I got bored and moved on.

So there's precisely one hot girl in our office, and she just called with a question. I went to pick up the phone and it slipped, I did the banana trick where you grab at it 4 times before finally getting a hold of the phone. If this strikes you as at all funny, you're not alone. I spent the next 3 second trying not to laugh as I gave my standard "Good afternoon, this is Chris" spiel.

grumble All I wanted was a good after-lunch knife fight, but Noooooooooooo.

@ChrisS That's like all my interactions with women. Although mine usually end in tears. My own.
Cue music!

@ChrisS - damn you're smooth

8:31 PM
@RobMoir clears throat That's what she said bows

Okay who (in the US) wants to win a bicycle? :)

@Holocryptic that's better.
@Holocryptic those sharp pointy teeth hurt, do they? :)

@Holocryptic That's my ringtone.

@voretaq7 Yes. Among other things.
I'm still waiting for SF to do a server giveaway.
Not that I'd likely win

8:40 PM
@Holocryptic I think I've got an HP ML110 G2 laying around here if you want to pay the $220 S&H.

@Holocryptic I think SE is doing contests on the sites that need the promotion, and SF probably gets enough traffic already
I'd much rather win a bicycle than a server. Servers==work, bicycles==fun. :)

@ChrisS I think I'll live :)

quite. My electric bill at home is big enough without buying a server

@freiheit My thinking is the exact opposite. Bikes = Pedaling = Work

If you wanted us to do a give away it might be possible. You would just need to make a good case on meta first. Also, the prize would probably be something useful that your company probably wouldn't buy for you. Maybe a fancy network tool or something like that

8:43 PM
@freiheit servers can be fun if you're just using them at home

every day I'm pedalling pedalling

If I was good at making cases, I probably wouldn't be stuck on helpdesk a majority of the time

@Holocryptic I have enough servers at work that I don't want to deal with one much at home... (well, ok, there's a little volunteer work for a non-profit, but that's for a good cause)

@ChrisS I approve

8:45 PM
actually, a good high quality chair would be a good SO or SF "prize"

@ChrisS: I got the Mirra -- like that one

I know we've talked about chairs before... The one I'm sitting in sucks... I've seen a few Aerons go on CL around, but nothing worth jumping on yet. A Sayl looks pretty comfy too, though I haven't sat in them.

I could use a better chair at home, never mind work

@KyleBrandt A hooker.

nothing like mashing your back up to make you appreciate a good chair

8:51 PM
Too snarky? Keep in mind I'm rep capped, so this isn't a rep whore.

A: How to determine which ports are open/closed on a FIREWALL?

MarkMSince this is a site for systems administrators in a professional capacity, I would assume that most would just log into the firewall and look at the ACLs to see what is blocked.

@MarkM More comment than answer; boarderline, depends on which mod get the flag

@MarkM Not snarky enough.
:-)

It's -1?!?
What the I don't even
HA

@ChrisS That looks like something I would expect to see on Portal

It got converted to a comment already
Which one of you Marshal whoring scumbags flagged it :)

8:55 PM
@MarkM I was going to but was distracted by explaining to WesleyDavid how ssh keys with passphrases work.

oh hai @MarkM

@ChrisS cool story bro, but what does the fact that it's a hot girl have to do with it?

@Zypher :)
It was a legit answer, sir.

@MarkM Oh I see how it is, we're Marshal-whoring scumbags, but the blues are "sir"s and "ma'am"s :-)

@MarkM Seems like more of a comment than an answer...

8:57 PM
hahahah ... no no it was a comment

@Aaron I can't remember the last time I dropped the phone while answering it. She's rarely in the office, field worker mostly, so she calls once in a blue moon. It would figure that she'd be calling when I fumble the phone and undoubtedly made some 'strange' noises trying to not let it drop on my desk.

@Zypher You want to turn it back into an answer so that I can flag it appropriately? I would be willing to do that for you.

@ScottPack no flag weight whoring

@voretaq7 Only the ones that are blue from SF :). @freiheit can suck it, for example.
^ Just kidding, in case there was any question.

:-D

8:59 PM
@MarkM Yes, I can definitely suck it. :-P I'm a lowly 5700 rep regular user on SF, my blue comes from Bicycles.

@Zypher Hey, just because I was offering to provide you random servicing doesn't necessarily mean I'm whoring.
2

@freiheit Hush up and strap a 4U database server to that bike!
and pedal faster damnit! Spinning those hard drives takes a lot of electricity!

@voretaq7 You'll rue the day they upgrade everything to 15k models.

Now @ScottPack, don't go giving it all away up front. You make them work for it. </FamilyGuyParenting>

@voretaq7 I could totally strap a couple of our Oracle DB servers to my bike rack, no problem.

9:03 PM
I think I'm going to start answering things on other sites so that when I do a recalc, my rep will occasionally go up instead of always going down.

@ScottPack ::pant:: :wheeze: must...install..SSDs...too...out of shape....to....power...15K...SCSI....disks....

(they're blade servers with storage on SAN and NAS)

@freiheit (I didn't pack 30,000 miles of extension cord for nothing!)

I could probably generate a couple hundred watts... these better be fancy power-conserving CPUs and whatnot, or else the brownouts will kill 'em. :)

Outage Incident report
Proximate Cause: Power Failure.
Root Cause: Datacenter was biking uphill - Rider passed out.

9:06 PM
Root Cause: Datacenter was biking uphill - Rider was a pussy
There, I fixed it for you.

I'm... I'm dumbfounded.

@voretaq7 is "RequestContent" even an HTTP header??

hmmm... bikecalculator.com/wattsUS.html -- according to that math, I could do 117-177 watts with bursts up over 300 that make me feel like I'm going to die if I do it more than a few minutes...

@ChrisS Treat it like SMTP: "You can add whatever the hell headers you want."

@Zypher That has THREE comment upvotes. I just lost 30 rep to a recalc too. I COULD BE BREAKING EVEN RIGHT NOW.

9:08 PM
@voretaq7 I suppose so; just seems like he's thinking of modifying something that's already there.

(just don't expect me to accept them. HTTP/2.0: WTF - "That shit ain't even NEAR the spec!")

@voretaq7 httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_substitute.html -- apparently it's included in apache now

@MarkM I was one of the comment upvotes; but I would not have upvoted the Answer version.

Apache is getting to be almost as bloated as EMACS.
I will be mailing the ASF some Midol for Christmas.

@ChrisS Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

9:09 PM
In fact if you can all find me 8 different types of medication for bloating I'll send them as Hanukkah gifts too.

You can disable most all of those modules; something most people don't take the time to do.
My personal website's Apache has only 14 modules enabled, and I might be able to whittle that down further.

@ChrisS mod_rewrite and mod_include are powerful enough to count as 5 modules, though. :-P

Q: Is openldap fit for large production deployments?

user64204For about 1 year we've been using openldap on ubuntu server 10.04LTS for authenticating about 20 IT users and everything has been running fine (the operations on the LDAP server were basically limited to creating/removing users using apache directory studio). More recently (6 months ago) we've a...

@voretaq7 ^ go go go go go

I could easily rip out the 2 log modules, same with expires, mime, gzip... Probably alias too.
@freiheit One of those 14 is mod_rewrite, but convenience demands it. =]

@MarkM meh, all I can tell him is "It works for meeeeeeee!"

9:15 PM
Due to lack of resources and knowledge internally, all we've done so far is to find ways of keeping LDAP running without really investigating any of these issues (use monit to restart it when it crashes, db_recover to recover the db if needed, and slapcat to recreate the db from scratch when db_recover fails).

@ChrisS mod_rewrite considered harmful!

Protip: Don't use shit that you're not familiar with in production

@MarkM but then how will you get familiar with it? :)

Apache is still only using 9092K after running for weeks, and it's plenty snappy enough for me.

You learn a lot faster when users are holding your proverbial chestnuts over a proverbial garbage disposal :-)

9:18 PM
@freiheit Would "How do I get rid of Ponies that keep messing with my bikes?" count as a question for Canondale contest?
If not, I'm gonna have to figure out something to ask about my tandem...

@Ward If you can somehow convince 2 more people to upvote it than downvote it...

A: what is the fastest and most reliable way of transferring a lot of files?

Tillman32I'm a big fan of FTP. I use FTP to transfer media from my main computer to my server. I get good speeds, over LAN. FTP is reliable, I'd give that a shot, as it's easy to set up, and it could be faster in some cases.

He recommends FTP and when I tell him FTP sucks he asks if I've ever heard of SFTP, like it's the same as FTP.
Fucking people.

I rage against port 20!
@MarkM hey, that question also gave me the opportunity to bust out the AST "station wagon full of tapes" quote. BONUS.

most reliable way?
isn't that what we have TCP for, AMIRITE??!!

9:34 PM
@Aaron nein! Ziss we cannot use ANYMORE!
Ve uze only zee finest UDP datagrams! Sent een triplicate!

Does it make sense?

Q: ESXi from SC card to hard disk on raid system?

BitBiterMy currrent ESXi 4.0.0 system runs from an SD card and has some VMs set up on two 1 TB drives running in a Raid level 1 configuration on a Dell PowerEdge R710. I've been asked to make the system use a hard disk in place of the SD card. I've tried to copy the entire SD card to a third hard drive...

serverfault.com/questions/333389/virtualizing-ntp-server <- Can someone with close votes left dupe that for me?

@voretaq7 - got it.

@ewwhite danke

@ewwhite No, not really.. everyone I know moves from hdd's to SD (or ssd's in raid1 for the really high end ones)

@pauska - He says it's for political reasons. I guess it happens.

@ewwhite - as I said in my comments on that question, this is why we don't let senior managers in the server rooms. Most of ours wouldn't know what a SD card was, and wouldn't care either as long as one never caused an outage serious enough to register on their radar

@Kylebrandt?
Didn't know if he's still around.
Would have been on sooner but the link was missing...

@BartSilverstrim: Huh?

10:40 PM
He's mad that you blogged, removing his link to chat

now this is a fun bug:
Symptoms: The following message can be seen after executing the write memory command, even though the version has not been changed.

Router# write memory

Warning: Attempting to overwrite an NVRAM configuration previously written by a different version of the system image.
Overwrite the previous NVRAM configuration?[confirm]

Workaround: New hardware

Surprise!
actually, what NPE do you have?

@Aaron NPE?

network processing engine, the CPU on a 7206

10:52 PM
@Aaron oh we are running 2960 switches I was just looking at open bugs for the 15.0.1SE

@zypher and people wonder why I don't buy cisco

meh, i've been happy with cisco my whole career, like anything core to your infrastructure you need to read the release notes and be really really sure of what you are doing before upgrading something that is currently working

fair enough. The best thing about them is that they're honest about being assholes at least. Kinda like Microsoft and Apple, you're in no doubt that they're there to make as much money as possible off you, at least they're honest about it

which i can respect

Much better than "I know we said 'don't be evil' but sorry, there was profit to be had" or "I don't want to put my name down on a cellphone but lend me yours and I'll be all over that like a donkey on a waffle"
yes, I've got no problem with someone coming along and being a good honest profiteering jerk. You know where you stand with those people.

11:00 PM
Can someone explain xkcd.com/980 ?
I don't get it

Just a visual representation of money, I suppose

Oh..
Its clickable
That didn't work the first time I clicked for some reason
So I was like "Okay, some infographic that is too small to read"

Blame @bartsilverstrim, he disabled your mouse because you disabled the chat link

I don't understand this chat complaining
Why do any of you ever leave?
If you never leave, you don't have to click the button to join. PROBLEM SOLVED

If a tree fell in a multi domain forest, and there wasn't a sysadmin around to complain about it, did it still annoy someone?
that's better
My zen for the day

11:20 PM
Did everyone see this? - xkcd.com/980
Zoom in... it's worth it.
Very detailed, in fact.

Yes, I kinda want to figure out how to make a lot of that myself
money, not charts

Ugh. Just finished shoveling coal. sweating sucks.

11:37 PM
hm
top 1% for the US is > $822,000/yr?

$400,000/yr
really, $380k

I guess thats' household

@KyleBrandt It's an extra damn click, man! Plus the effort of scrolling to the bottom of the question page... too hard!!!

speaking of that chart, the IKEA corporate structure is really interesting to read through
The IKEA trademark and concept is owned by Inter IKEA Systems, another private Dutch company, but not part of the Ingka Holding group. Its parent company is Inter IKEA Holding, registered in Luxembourg. This, in turn, belongs to an identically named company in the Netherlands Antilles, run by a trust company in Curaçao.

@Aaron And they pick which country to book their revenues in to minimize how much taxes they pay?

11:49 PM
I think they manage to wrangle it so that the individual stores don't make any profits, but pay franchise fees to a nonprofit somewhere
