Hi ! I'm looking for a way to appeal a rejected edit I made. I jthink it's valid and useful but it was rejected without a reason which I find is a bit rude, any idea ?
@Holocryptic That one actually started in Inkscape, but yeah, lots of editing with Notepad++ to get it just right. You can pull up the source of that image and see exactly what it's made of.
If you were to add, say, a blockquote from an RFC, or a technet article, I'd say that's fine. Adding links to products and such generally isn't because it's hard for the OP to see what Bart (a 19k user) is recommending vs someone with substantially lower rep at a glance.

Nothing wrong with trying to improve answers, you just need to be careful that you're enhancing what's there and not adding totally new ideas. Those belong as comments or even whole answers.
If you listen to the podcasts then what @Shadok did is what Joel always envisioned happening, he does though acknowledge that the SX community tends not to agree with him

@Holocryptic I was amazed too by the "other" features on stackexchange, I didn't think there was so much to do beside Q&A, tags and votes but there is.
Just a month ago I learned the Expires and Cache-Control HTTP headers. The other day I learned how to specify a license (like the creative commons licenses) in a web page (or other web doc) so webcrawlers, feeds, and archives will index it accordingly.
@ChrisS Yeah, I realize that too. I just try to learn as I go. I feel like I'm at a disadvantage compared to people who've been involved with this stuff since their teens.
@Shadok There are a few high rep users that keep tags in check for the most part. Without them, it would be a nightmate. I've made a tag wiki here and there but I don't mess with synonyms and all of that nonsense.
Meh; when you're a teen and learn something you think you know it all when you've barely scratched the surface, so teenages aren't very good at learning...
SE is nice in the sense that you "unlock" privs, so you're not overwhelmed from the start since you can't do a lot from the start. Then as you get more and more rep, you gradually see what you can change and kind of piecemeal the knowledge together if you hang around long enough
@Holocryptic I have a good experince in IRC (if one can see that positive ^^), I think I can adapt here but I don't have much time to do it, it's mainly browsing through topics of interest during reboots/transfers and boring work days
@Shadok that's how it usually starts. Before you know it you blow off wife and kids in order to answer questions and maintain the site. Its a scary thing.
@MarkM The problem with tags is the subjectivity on merging or keeping two apart I think as in apache2 and apache for example (even tough I think you have strict rules to differentiate between products version)
@MarkM that seems to be what I would have done too but some users asking won't know that the "x" feature wasn't present in the 1.x branch so it can be mandatory to change this afterwards.

@Iain fine but some people could interpret "apache" as apache old because of scripts named like apache2ctl (VS apachectl) installed by default on some distros. apache1 and apache2 solves this problem

@Shadok I don't go to the main SE site, so I don't know how it works there, but when you're on Serverfault, it puts a beige background behind questions that are tagged with your favorites so that they're easy to see.
@Shadok There are admins from all walks on here. Lots of open source people, some BSD guys, some Windows only folks. There are a couple of enterprise storage people that hang out in chat too
@Shadok Yeah, promoting commercial products is frowned upon if there's a free alternative that works just as well. Promoting something you're associated with even more so. It's a messy line and some are more aggressive than others.
@MarkM I'm ok with that but the answer from Chris S seemed to make a difference between opensource and prorietary software, that's what I was pointingg "adding two alternative free softwares really doesn't change the message."

Can you install a custom database (or other custom software) on Azure? I'm quite happy with PostgreSQL. Would this also help me save money? I know next to nothing about Azure.
I know that hosts.allow and host.deny only affect things that are tcpwrappered, but what does this mean in practice? It seems that most people use hosts.allow to handle ssh and nfs blocking, but what other services are typically handled there? And what services AREN'T typically handled there?
