Q: Equipment suggestion for exhaust and cooling for a small server room

N.HughesI am currently looking for solutions to cool down and exhausting the heat that is currently being generated by our blade servers. Recently we migrated from 12 custom built tower servers to 5 1RU DELL 1850 Edge servers and 4 Dell 2950 Edge servers, incuding 1 2850 Edge server in 1 42U Dell Enclosu...

this guy needs to find a new keyboard with a functioning enter-button before looking for any other kind of equipment.. jeeez

Carriage-return is so last century. And for pussies.

Q: How to configure Windows Firewall to protect the external interface but not the internal one?

MassimoWindows Server 2008 R2 SP1, running the Edge role of Lync Server 2010. One internal network interface connected to the company LAN, configured with a private IP address, subnet mask, internal DNS servers and no default gateway. One external interface connected to the Internet, configured with t...

Anyone else run into Firewall issues with one interface Public and the other Private on Win2008R2?

Muahahaha! I have beaten both Gimp and an animated GIF into submission through dogged perseverance and random guessing!

Afternoon all champs

<- is looking at planes again. LORAN receivers make me giggle.
@Holocryptic REAL MEN SEND BARE LINEFEEDS.

4:13 PM
I have managed to fix an animated gif. I'm off to do a happy dance! Or go pee.

@BartSilverstrim You can do both. Just not simultaneously please...

@ChrisS Haven't had to do a config like that, so I'm of no help there.
@voretaq7 WALLOFTEXTINCAPSORGOHOME!

The GIMP's interface designers...wonder what narcotic they're taking when they programmed that damn thing.

@BartSilverstrim They had the eye zippers closed

I've wanted to learn how to make a gif. Haven't gotten to it though.

4:15 PM
@Holocryptic [INSERT ASCII TABLE HERE]

Ta heck with GIFs. Use SVGs with transforms.

Step 1: Wait for patent to expire.
Step 2: Compress image with lousy, lossy compression algorithm
Step 3: …
Step 4: PROPHET!

hahahah

@ChrisS I hadn't heard of SVGs before. Looks interesting.
@voretaq7 That's half the fun of it

@Holocryptic WHAT?! You've never heard of Scalable Vector Graphics before?! HOW??

4:23 PM
Hi ! I'm looking for a way to appeal a rejected edit I made. I jthink it's valid and useful but it was rejected without a reason which I find is a bit rude, any idea ?

@ChrisS 'Cuz I've only been doing this for roughly 3 years. I'm amazed I have a job, frankly.

@Shadok Edit it again?
What was the question and edit?

...who rejected it?

If it's valid, you can just re-edit and I'll approve it

@Holocryptic Ok; I'll let you off the hook this time. But if you do any web graphics at all you need to start reading up.

4:24 PM
Is that the right way to appeal ?

@BartSilverstrim I'm not sure < 10k users see who rejected it

Here si the link to the diff: serverfault.com/suggested-edits/2514

@Shadok There is no appeal

@Ma
erf

hahaha, @BartSilverstrim it was on your answer

4:25 PM
@MarkM ok, i was wondering about this :)

My favorite part of SVG files is that it's just XML.. So I can create a calendar icon (like this one stoneyforest.net/images/icons/calendar.svg) using notepad.

@MarkM tell me if that edit is good for you and I'll resubmit it right now, thx !

@Shadok You added content to his answer, which is generally frowned upon. It should have been added as a comment, IMO

HE'S SCREWING WITH MA' WORDING!

@ChrisS Really? That is neat!

4:26 PM
@Holocryptic good to know but I thought that was an incremental addition, not really worth a comment which would have made the info harder to find
@BartSilverstrim hehe, I'm THAT BAD ! :p

@Holocryptic Agreed; too much new content.

@Shadok Unlike a Mr. M Jackson, who used to be Bad but is now Dead.

HE BE STEALIN' MA WERDS!

Ok, I'll try to make a good comment of it so. Thanks to you all to show me the way :)

@Holocryptic That one actually started in Inkscape, but yeah, lots of editing with Notepad++ to get it just right. You can pull up the source of that image and see exactly what it's made of.

4:28 PM
@Shadok NP. The other thing to note is that you can ask on Meta.SF if you're not clear on something

Okay I'm done.

@BartSilverstrim YA WERDS ? xxxD3F4C3Dxxx !

@Shadok I think it's more along the lines of you suggesting products or services that he didn't originally

@MarkM allright, I don't edit that much and was just reviewing my profile when I saw that. Wondering what the problem was.

If you were to add, say, a blockquote from an RFC, or a technet article, I'd say that's fine. Adding links to products and such generally isn't because it's hard for the OP to see what Bart (a 19k user) is recommending vs someone with substantially lower rep at a glance.

4:30 PM
@Holocryptic , will do. I'm not used to "socialize" on this site, just answering the questions I can so I'm new to all the stuff gravitating around the Q&A part

@Shadok Yep, no worries. It takes a bit getting used to.

Nothing wrong with trying to improve answers, you just need to be careful that you're enhancing what's there and not adding totally new ideas. Those belong as comments or even whole answers.

If you listen to the podcasts then what @Shadok did is what Joel always envisioned happening, he does though acknowledge that the SX community tends not to agree with him

@Holocryptic :)

@Iain I think when they maimed CW, they realized that the atmosphere changed.

4:32 PM
@MarkM Understood :) In that case I think I'll make a comment of it because that answer is great and I'd like people looking for that answer to stumble on those links.

They also seemed oblivious to the sex references on this chat site in their podcast a week or two ago.

@Shadok That's probably what I would do there.

@ChrisS There's so much I want/need to learn. I feel like I'll never "catch up"

@voretaq7 Real men use LORAN-A
Or a sextant.

@Holocryptic You wont; I've realized this just in the last year or so... There will always be more, people who are ahead of you, something new...

4:34 PM
@Holocryptic I was amazed too by the "other" features on stackexchange, I didn't think there was so much to do beside Q&A, tags and votes but there is.

@Shadok Tags are the devil
Well, bad tags are.

@MarkM will do, I bookmarked thise to come back on it later
@MarkM even for graffiti artists, I assure you :)

Just a month ago I learned the Expires and Cache-Control HTTP headers. The other day I learned how to specify a license (like the creative commons licenses) in a web page (or other web doc) so webcrawlers, feeds, and archives will index it accordingly.

@ChrisS Yeah, I realize that too. I just try to learn as I go. I feel like I'm at a disadvantage compared to people who've been involved with this stuff since their teens.

Yeah, you've got longer to burn out.

4:36 PM
@Shadok There is definitely a lot to do around here. Best to start slow, watch how things are done and then ease into it.

@Shadok There are a few high rep users that keep tags in check for the most part. Without them, it would be a nightmate. I've made a tag wiki here and there but I don't mess with synonyms and all of that nonsense.

Meh; when you're a teen and learn something you think you know it all when you've barely scratched the surface, so teenages aren't very good at learning...

heh

SE is nice in the sense that you "unlock" privs, so you're not overwhelmed from the start since you can't do a lot from the start. Then as you get more and more rep, you gradually see what you can change and kind of piecemeal the knowledge together if you hang around long enough

TEENAGERS aren't very good at learning? Are teenagers your only users?

4:37 PM
unless you're @ShaneMadden and get 20k rep in one sitting.

@MarkM synonyms are hard to propose because of the high tag rep requirements

@Holocryptic I have a good experince in IRC (if one can see that positive ^^), I think I can adapt here but I don't have much time to do it, it's mainly browsing through topics of interest during reboots/transfers and boring work days

Chat is the red headed stepchild of the SE family.

@Shadok that's how it usually starts. Before you know it you blow off wife and kids in order to answer questions and maintain the site. Its a scary thing.

@MarkM The problem with tags is the subjectivity on merging or keeping two apart I think as in apache2 and apache for example (even tough I think you have strict rules to differentiate between products version)

4:41 PM
@Shadok Right. New users will tag stuff apache when it should be apache2, when though they are functionally different

@Holocryptic I'm not there, no wife, no kid but no time anyway so I don't feel threatened for now :)

Generally, when I tag questions I choose the most specific tags that pop up when I start typing it in.

@Shadok we only just fixed the and - before that there were more and for example

@MarkM that seems to be what I would have done too but some users asking won't know that the "x" feature wasn't present in the 1.x branch so it can be mandatory to change this afterwards.

@Shadok is a synonym for

4:44 PM
@Iain Should be no , should only be and

Tags are cool in the sense that you can favorite them and have favorites be highlighted on the main page, for example

@Iain that should have been a mess, and apache is pretty conservative with their numbering (it doesn't change every month)

But they are a burden on people that care about them
The easy solution: don't care about them

@Iain as meaning "apache current" ?

They're only a burden because they're a magnet for abuse.

4:44 PM
@ChrisS I was just fixing that

Well if you didn't make mistakes I wouldn't have to correct them. =P

@Shadok most people who come here with an apache question wouldn't know what version it is and as most of the world is V2.x then it's easier that way

@MarkM oops, I have some set stackexchange-wide, maybe I should try without for a few weeks to see how it impacts qquestions I see
@Iain fine but some people could interpret "apache" as apache old because of scripts named like apache2ctl (VS apachectl) installed by default on some distros. apache1 and apache2 solves this problem

@Shadok it's worse than that though as, for example apache2ctl is used by ubuntu whereas CentOS still uses apachectl

while I'm here I suppose the same judgement applies to this other edit of me which was rejected (with a reason this but one which I didn't know how to interpret befor getting answers from you guys): serverfault.com/suggested-edits/3762

4:50 PM
HES A SPY, GET HIM

@Shadok Meh, that one is a coin flip... I would have approved it, but someone who didn't know that all those products are free might not have.

@Shadok if you try to tag a question with it is automagically changed to

@Shads0 My nemesis ! Your rule will end sooooon :p

@Shadok I don't go to the main SE site, so I don't know how it works there, but when you're on Serverfault, it puts a beige background behind questions that are tagged with your favorites so that they're easy to see.

Hmm, I wonder if anyone has taught @shadok about the wonders of this chat, namely,
2

4:53 PM
@ChrisS Happy to see that free software is viewed as positive instead of neutral :)
@Shads0 nope, I just ""introduced"" me :D

@MarkM similar on SO and pale greenyblue on SU

s/I/you

@Shadok Well the OP mentioned one piece of free software, adding two alternative free softwares really doesn't change the message.

@MarkM I saw that but I didn't made the relation :)

Hmm, servers aren't exploding, lusers have no problems, waiting on new server + rack...SLACK OFF TIME!

4:54 PM
@Shadok There are admins from all walks on here. Lots of open source people, some BSD guys, some Windows only folks. There are a couple of enterprise storage people that hang out in chat too

@ChrisS now I know why some mods are dedicated :) That's a pretty fine line here

If it's a good solution, people generally support it regardless of open-source vs closed source

@MarkM Please don't remind me of my Windows dependency, it hurts like @tombull89's lego fleshlight shoved up my ass...

@Shads0 I'd rather manage desktops though GPO than try and bend Chef to my will that much.
Server config is one thing, but I'm totally fine with Windows on the desktop.

@Shadok Yeah, promoting commercial products is frowned upon if there's a free alternative that works just as well. Promoting something you're associated with even more so. It's a messy line and some are more aggressive than others.

4:56 PM
@MarkM I'm ok with that but the answer from Chris S seemed to make a difference between opensource and prorietary software, that's what I was pointingg "adding two alternative free softwares really doesn't change the message."

@Shadok yeah, mailq has a bit of an itchy trigger finger from time to time
The thing is that anyone with enough rep can approve or reject, so there's no real hard and fast standard
So you can't take rejects personally, since 99% of them aren't from mods, but are from high rep users instead

@ChrisS I already got one troll banned (using his account to only answer with links to his super duper solution which was his own profile's website link, and proprietary)

The rep required for approving edits should probably be raised a bit... Ensure the people doing it are well doctorated with the site's norms.

Ok, food time. Back in a few

@MarkM the reject from mailq seems in line with what I learned about adding new ideas in comments VS correcting the original poster
I have to go too, thanks for your quick and detailed answers guys and have a good day !

5:00 PM
@Shadok I might have let that one slide since they're all front ends for pf anyway

@Shadok Better than some people, let me see if I can't dig up that meta topic...

@Shadok we have a vote to close chat room too - just throw stuff in there if it needs closing/migrating etc.

@MarkM IPCop is linux based with iptables :)

@MarkM pfSense and M0n0wall are based on FreeBSD.

@Iain I think i found this one after the fact, I just flagged the post with a detailed message and it got through but I'll think of this chatroom in case it happen again, thx
have to go, later guys !

5:02 PM
@Shadok for spammer's flags are the way to go

@ChrisS which uses pf, right?

they use "pf"
OpenBSD has re-written it and changed syntax a while back, whilst freebsd hasnt

Found it! [got called away]

Q: Bad rejection: Moderators should probably err on the side of inclusion, not on the side of rejection

JerryA few days ago, I came across a question on serverfault with an answer I thought good, but could be improved. And indeed, the software asked me to improve the question. So I did. I clarified and gave details on how to make the solution secure. http://serverfault.com/suggested-edits/3502 This e...

@MarkM I'm sorry, I was thinking something crazy...

5:21 PM
wooo! I get to leave early today!!
But I have to work tomorrow....

@Holocryptic But tomorrow is Friday

@Shads0 Tomorrow is Veteran's Day, you unpatriotic scallawag. Have you no pride?

@Holocryptic I have work tomorrow -.-
And I was wondering why I got my pay today

meep meep

herp derp?
I need food. So I'll be back in a few.

Q: PostgreSQL on Azure

xanadontCan you install a custom database (or other custom software) on Azure? I'm quite happy with PostgreSQL. Would this also help me save money? I know next to nothing about Azure.

@MarkM Perfect, IMO

5:55 PM
Can someone approve my tag wiki creation?

6:19 PM
But I was too mean
Here is another cool question:
0
Q: What services does hosts.allow NOT affect?

Jed DanielsI know that hosts.allow and host.deny only affect things that are tcpwrappered, but what does this mean in practice? It seems that most people use hosts.allow to handle ssh and nfs blocking, but what other services are typically handled there? And what services AREN'T typically handled there?

@voretaq7 looks like iOS 5.0.1 is out to fix your battery woes.

@MarkM battery wo[powerdown]?
:-)

Supposedly beta2 of 5.0.1 showed that some users when from -15% per hour to -3%

also re: the wisecrack about the sextant, I have one. And I know how to use it. And I HAVE used it :-)

Not a bad ratio if it's legit

6:29 PM
@MarkM well that will be nice...
software update on the phone doesn't see it yet but maybe I'll update when I get home.
Also if they have it so app developers can mark "DO NOT DELETE MY SHIT!" maybe I'll update the iPad too

My android phone is trash regardless of how many updates I get

(having my charts disappear before a flight would be very upsetting...)

but I'm looking forward to the ipad update
Ya, the whole "oh shit, all my shit is fucked" thing with the cache is fixed
I don't know if it requires an update from the app devs though

6:47 PM
Hint: Don't try moanmyip.com with speakers turned on full volume.

@tombull89 I learned that the hard way yesterday with my gf in the room

@voretaq7 It just showed up on my ipad, but people have been getting it ota for 30 min or so. It must not be an instantaneous rollout

@tombull89 Uh, the URL is moanmyip.com. What did you think was going to happen?

Where I am --> moanmyweather.com/?location=49546 (NSFW, but that should be obvious by now)

@ChrisS OMG WHY DIDN'T YOU WARN ME EARLIER?!

6:55 PM
It made me laugh out loud; at least it's someone with a sense of humor. =]

haha, so it's snowing lightly huh? With wet and slippery something or other?

@Holocryptic She didn't offer to be your snow bunny?

Nope. She alluded to being, uh, somewhat aroused in the same way the roads are treacherous.

Hrm... She changes it up.. Just got the same one you did.

@MarkM just got it. installifying now...

7:00 PM
Seems there's 3 different intros "Hey" "It aint easy making the weather sexy" "Hey, it's your favorite weather girl"; and two endings "if you want I can be your snow bunny" and "the roads are going to be wet and slippery; just like me" (at least for "snowing lightly", which is the current weather here)
I'm surprised the filters didn't catch that domain name...

@ChrisS The fact that you and I are sitting here hitting refresh on moanmyweather.com is cracking me up.

@Holocryptic Well when you put it that way...

lol

FML - Forgot to snapshot the VM before starting the sequencer... have to rebuild the VM again...

@Shads0 With you grandfather in the room? Just kidding.

Q: Linux shell scripting - how to append IPs in a file

neotobeCan I append IPs (a whole class C range) in a file using shell scripting? Thanks you!

7:16 PM
@mailq We both just answered that question
I got a "talking to" from sysadmin about one-word answers a bit ago. >> isn't technically a word, though, so I think I'm OK. Right?

@MarkM ... common ... you're better than that

@Zypher :(

If I'm going to call Frank out on it...have to do it to you as well :P

It does contain a link to the doc on using output redirection.

Mine is better :(
and you get the reputation :(

7:19 PM
@mailq I'll also have it deleted, no doubt.
I'm rep capped anyway
I just can't stand bad questions. I've commented constructively on at least 4 today

Ok, you got +1 from me :)

I upvoted @Iain anyway

Yeah, Iain is a nerd and takes this question serious.

@mailq surely you meant echo 192.168.0.{0..255} and not echo 192.168.0.{1..255}

damn, you are right. Corrected

7:25 PM
@mailq and I've had my fun answer today too

aw @Zypher :/
My >> answer is red now

yes yes it si ... not only is it 0 words, it's just a link

There are so much left. But I don't waste answers for that, so I do it in comments

@Zypher Can you at least bludgeon the OP?
I figured it would get deleted, but it's such a bad question

meh, it's a beginer question, not a bad question ...

7:32 PM
It's certainly not sysadmin related in its current form.
And the OP only asks "Can I" not "How Can I"
I know I'm being a bit pedantic, but it's a bad question

@MarkM Perhaps you can edit the question, slightly, to improve it?
Also, I think your "two char" answer was neat.

@jscott It's unclear, I don't know what format he actually wants it in.
Doesn't matter much to me, it's got 3 close votes already anyway

I've cleaned up the question

Interesting that even new users (76 rep) are in on the whole "Stop saying 'class C' network" meme that SF has. :)
I think that's a good sign.

@jscott It's not a meme; it's a quest for truth
4

7:38 PM
Now if only we can get people to stop saying PDC and BDC

@ChrisS +1

@Holocryptic They're allowed to say PDC only if it is directly followed by Emulator role

@Holocryptic Unless you're running NT, then, well, not sure even SF can help you. :)

haha

They just stopped to say floppy disk. And they are still the icon for "to save".

7:43 PM
@mailq
169
Q: Save icon: Still a floppy disk?

T PopsBear with me because this question doesn't pertain to an algorithm or any block of code. Rather, it deals with designing forms and applications. I'm working on a project where the user is able to save their work (most likely to the HDD but also possibly any other media, including floppy disks). ...

Yes we should use "Jesus" as a replacement

@GeorgeEdison Dude, wait, wat?
Jesus as a "save" icon, now "Chicken God Server"?!

Those are from Google (the autocomplete entries).

It only works with JavaScript. Bah.

I AM DISSAPPOINT

8:11 PM
try boobs

nothing D=

What the hell is the latest way to install and remove services easily in debian nowadays? insserv? Or has that been replaced again?

@MikeyB You sacrifice a lamb to GNU, the god of the kernel.

@Shads0 FAIL!
@MikeyB Put a FreeBSD disk in the drive and reboot.

@voretaq7 Then I'll have two problems to solve.

8:53 PM
@MikeyB At least one of them will be what to do with all your free time. =]

9:11 PM
@MikeyB Yes, but you won't be using Debian anymore so that's about 500 problems you won't have :-)

@voretaq7 shred /home/voretaq7

Debian GNU/Linux Random Number Generator:

return(6); // Chosen by fair die roll. Guaranteed to be random.
@MikeyB That's not my username :)
also any good Solaris admin knows you put your homedirs on /u

@voretaq7 shred /home/mikeg

that's better.
`permission denied` now. :-)

sudo shred /home/mikeg/

9:14 PM
Password:

probably still needs a chflags -R noschg nouchg /home/mikeg

@ChrisS I wouldn't set my homedir as immutable. Bad Times...
also I generally don't use the immutable flags on production systems even though I should (radmind doesn't understand them so it means I'd need to do pre/post scripts to clear and re-set them)

@voretaq7 Reboot in single user mode to avoid all that password crap; and if console isn't trusted I've got a bootable FreeBSD UMD

@ChrisS GBDE FTW! :-)

@voretaq7 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hard_drive bs=1m

9:17 PM
@ChrisS That's what alternate superblocks are for...
I won't lose too much data :P

There's no count argument in there, it'd zero the whole drive.
Still wouldn't deal with backups... Probably keep those for your workstation...

@ChrisS You're right - I'm safe! my RAID-1 will protect me!
RAID: Redundant Array of Instantly-replicated Data-loss.
2

All of that requires logical or physical access anyway; I have neither.

@ChrisS You could social engineer the guys at my colo with sufficient quantities of good scotch
but it would have to exceed the quantities they already get from me :-)

Don't know which colo though; and value of energy required to find out > value of wiping your disk(s)
People get funny about security, but in truth there's so much low hanging fruit out there that you'll never be attacked in honest unless you're an extremely high value target.

9:22 PM
My colo is in italy
(at least that's what all the GeoIP databases still think)

Definitely don't want to go there, my roommate might get killed by a wander and I'll end up in prison for 4 years!
GeoIP on my website returns Russia, but the DC is in NY state.

my DC is 25 miles from my house
but after The Second Great Renumbering somehow the IPs we got never got reallocated as North America in GeoIP systems
they're assigned through ARIN, whois is correct, but yet witness the italian google when I visit!

Seems like only the ISPs care about updating the GeoIP DBs... which vaguely makes sense.

10:06 PM
@voretaq7 Oh, I was talking about your house. :p

@MikeyB I live in a cardboard box under the el.

10:26 PM
@MikeyB I live in a pineapple under the dea...

@tombull89 ** boggles **
