Tomtom just called out a diamond in comments. Is he trying to get a ban?

Q: iSCSI volume for hyper-v

Top__HatI am moving several hyper-v VMs from an under-powered host to a newer host with an iSCSI array for storage. What is the best configuration for the iSCSI volume to get the best performance for hyper-v? Should I make one large LUN and then just put all the vhds on that LUN or would multiple smaller...

@MarkM Mark's comment is pretty well outdated.. There's a fine line between trying to help with what you know, and volunteering knowledge you know is past its expiration.

I agree, but the phrasing of the comment begs to be disciplined.

This tweet came out of the Grace Hopper 2011 conference going on right now in Portland.That is a very interesting point. And I'm not sure how to fix it. If CompSci is used here as a shorthand for software engineering, this is a very valid point. Software Engineering is very much a creative field, even an intuitive one at times, but that's not the perception it gets. I don't know how to fix that

@Shads0 Salted hashes. Yawn. I'm more worried about the credit card numbers, heh.

Yeah - all depends on if the private key got out. Or if they were using ROT5 encryption.

@Kev thanks for asking. For future reference, pretty much anyone who you find in here would be able to answer questions like that too.

anyone know anything about ext3 write caching?
got a syslog server that's doing >100 4kb IOPS, no need, it could just cache them for a second or so and do one bigger write - any ideas?

I used to know. There's something in /proc to tune how rapidly the fs flushes to disk.

12:38 PM
ah ok, thanks for the tip

Don't thank me. that was far too vague to be useful :)

Afternoon all.

@chopper3 Ah, I think this was it: linuxmafia.com/pub/linux/suse-linux-internals/chapter4.html - Look at 4.4 /proc/sys/vm/bdflush
That lets you allow more dirty pages before flushing occurs, so you can swap chatty disk for something more bursty, if it suits.

oddly I'd found something very similar, thank you

@ShaneMadden I prefer ROT13. It's a lot more efficient. Only one key to store.

1:13 PM
@TomOConnor haha, that's a neat one.

1:31 PM
@ScottPack ROT13 doesn't work so well with credit card numbers... or any numbers for that matter.

@ChrisS It's like the assassin's, hiding in plain sight.

The only bright spot of having to work today was the fact that my commute was actually tolerable. Fringe benefit of working in an area that is geared towards gov.

There were slide-offs and accidents all over the place yesterday evening. People see a snowflake and freak out, forget how to drive and hit something!

Welcome to the philadelphia area...

@ChrisS I thought it was just the British that fell to pieces at the first hint of snow.

@SmallClanger Most people around here are great in just about anything... Two problems really 1. There's 1% who freak out at the first drop of rain, snowflake, anything. 2. When the weather is extremely bad you get the 1% of really good drivers and the 1% of complete idiots who don't know better, out on the road, meaning equal halves of good and terrible drives.

I suppose it doesn't take many to screw up the system for everyone else. One good blizzard here and the news is guaranteed to be full of footage of twats trying to drive to work on pack ice.
@Chopper3 I was actually clock-watching up until about 11:09. Then I got distracted and it was gone midday before I realised.

A: Is there a way to stop relaying network traffic through VPN?

tomjedrzWhat you are looking to setup is called "split tunneling" .. where the VPN client only sends traffic destined for the network on the other end through the tunnel. Some admins don't allow it, because it is thought a vulnerability. If it is enable, there is likely a configuration setting for it on ...

Dammit, Greader went and did another update, and now it's even harder to read my subscriptions

@Holocryptic Too much whitespace!

@Holocryptic - right there with you :P
Picked up an iPad last week, found some good RSS readers for that, seems to get the job done better now.

They went and modified the side bar, so now every subscription has the little bitmap on the side. My eyeballs are tracking all over the place.

People in educational fields I need some quick help, if someone says they can "order examination of [two textbooks]" - What does that mean?

@ChrisS Not in education, but contextually, it sounds like they can get evaluation loaners of certain textbooks.
That's the way I'm taking it

2:29 PM
@Shads0 Sounds like that to me too; just not sure. Trying not to sound like an idiot... =]

Just ask them? :)

@ChrisS IMHO, people only look like idiots when they don't ask about stuff they don't understand...unless they're lusers, they have no excuse

@Shads0 Which is why I'm asking you guys. =]

Hey… anyone know of a decent 4 x 3.5" SATA drive enclosure that does NAS? Ideally rackmount. I supply the disks.

Doesn't Promise or Netgear make something like that....

RND4000-100NAS... yeah I was looking at that one.

I know iXSystems has a 12 drive 2U NAS/SAN device, but it's probably very overkill for your use case.

If only they sold the consumer ones in rackmount form factor :/

there is a 4-bay iomega one, but its not rackmount its a little cube
is SNAPgear still in business?

how about this?
it looks like overland bought out SNAP

4-drives, done, and they've been doing it a while :)

The Postgres-on-Azure guy from yesterday told me to "get off my high horse" when I told him to stop being lazy and that we wouldn't do his job for him.

Q: PostgreSQL on Azure

xanadontCan you install a custom database (or other custom software) on Azure? I'm quite happy with PostgreSQL. Would this also help me save money? I know next to nothing about Azure.

looks like a really good webinar

3:00 PM
@voretaq7 Pretty much.

@voretaq7 If they get fired they keep the shares, though
Keep the shares = rich

@voretaq7 Didn't that used to be called extortion when the mob did it?

Though, I'd sell immediately. There's no way Zynga is actually worth 20B. They make farmville, for fuck's sake. The bubble on that will burst as soon as it leaves the bubble wand

@MarkM IDK the article says they want their unvested shares back.
so you'd be able to exercise your vested options either way but on termination unvested options typically vanish

@voretaq7 Theres no way they'd get them back if they fire the employees for not giving them back
no judge would let that happen

3:02 PM
@MarkM that involves a long, drawn out lawsuit (by the time it's over the bubble will have burst as you pointed out, and the options will be worth slightly less than the paper upon which the court's decision is printed)

I think that if it happens, we all need to ask our neighbors how a wood plank to finish building our chicken coop so that the farmville bubble stays in tact for these people

@Shads0 The reviews look amazing

Wow. The D+T department just asked me to install Windows 7 on a "spare" latop. It's an old one...with a 1.4GHz Celeron, 1GB RAM and a 40GB HD. Kicked an install off but how well it runs...no idea.

@MarkM The reviews for MW3 are amazing as well, doesn't make the game amazing. The problem I have with SS is the same I have with Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. The control scheme sucks ass. Zelda is meant to be played with a controller not by swinging your arms frantically like you're having a seizure

@Shads0 methinks you're upset that you have to move to play a videogame
I'm mostly afraid that i'm going to end up punching my cat in the face during a boss battle by accident.

@MarkM Methinks that the Wii has been the worst thing by Nintendo before the 3DS since the Virtual Boy.

@Shads0 I don't play a ton of Wii, but the "must haves" are pretty awesome

They're already moving to the new hardware and SS seems to be the first game in the 5 years the console has been available to use the motion controls for actual gameplay as opposed to motions one can do from the couch lazily, with a peripheral that came out 3 years after launch of said console.

3:42 PM
@Shads0 Thats going a little far. Wii Bowling is bad to the ass, son.

Galaxy, Kart, Twilight Princess

As far as 'must have' Galaxy used the motion as a 'shake' thats it, Mario Kart acheived nothing new in gaming, and OMG don't you dare say TP was a Wii title

@Shads0 Was it released on the Wii?

TP was a GC title that was bastardized by the Wii (Proud owner of a GC copy, pre-ordered in 2004 when it didn't have a title)

Wah wah
I'm not arguing how well the controller is integrated

is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development, and published by Nintendo for the GameCube and Wii video game consoles. It is the thirteenth installment in The Legend of Zelda series. Originally planned for release in November 2005, Twilight Princess was delayed by Nintendo to allow its developers to refine the game and add more content and to port it to the Wii. The Wii version was released alongside the Wii console on November 19, 2006, in North America, and in December 2006 in Japan, Europe, and Australia. This made Twilight Princess the firs...

I'm talking about how good the games are
The upper echelon Wii games are, in my opinion, more fun than the upper echelon games for 360 and PS3

@MarkM Oh I love the games, Galaxy 1/2, Prime Corrutpion(Probably the only game I can think of that actually used the motion well), Okami re-release, No More Heroes, Brawl, Sports/Resort.

Overall though, PS3 and 360 have stronger overall game libraries
but at the very top, IMO, Wii is more fun

I just hate everything the Wii embodies, no standardized online gaming (Made me cry with Brawl release), no HD option, crap control scheme that everyone (even nintendo in some cases) wants to stay away from. It killed my soul.

I mate of mine in PR at Nintendo told me they were calling it the 'Wii' two days before it was announced so I went around buying loads of domains with the word in it (wiiworld.com, wiinews etc) and sat back, made a nice pile of cash off it :)

@tombull89 "Better than nothing" comes to mind. I've put Win7 HomePrem on a P4, 512MB, 30GB laptop before.. It "ran"; could do basic web surfing and e-mail. It took 6 minutes to boot.

@Chopper3 Must be nice knowing everyone at every company everywhere in the world.

@Chopper3 woah. Isn't that illegal...or just immoral? Or plain genius.
Well, it's not shares so it's not insider trading.

@tombull89 How would that be illegal?

@MarkM I'm a social-beast

3:49 PM
@MarkM I was thinking of something else.
@ChrisS I don't think I'd want to try W7 with 512MB RAM. Eesh...

@MarkM Of course stories of what the window-cleaner discussed with me this morning aren't interesting on this site, hence you only get the relevant ones - I've also had more anecdote-collecting years than most on here too

@tombull89 Win7 boots and runs nicely with 512MB; it's just running anything besides the OS that kills the deal.
I've got Server 2008 R2 VMs that run on 256MB comfortably. Granted they're just doing AD/DNS...

@ChrisS Do you not query them very often, or do you have a tiny dick?

@ChrisS He just asked if you have a small ADpeen

Ok, who edited my last comment
I'm looking at @Chopper3 being the only diamond in the room...

I looked up and was like, wtf, did the new FF get autocorrect?
Then I saw the edit icon

@MarkM Servers are like women; you don't want them too big or too small... Same with a dick.

@ChrisS Haha. I run lots of queries against my AD, so I make sure my DCs have enough RAM to keep the whole database cached. It's about 60k objects. I tend to give them about 2GB RAM
The one server that I tend to run most stuff against has 4GB

3:59 PM
My ntds.dit is just over 65k

Mine's 448MB

4:13 PM
Great googly moogly. Must have one domain for everything

Yep
We had separate forests for faculty/staff and students until recently
Now it's one big heaping forest

I wouldn't expect separate forests, but separate domains sure seems like it'd make sense.
The file I mentioned is our main one; we have separate domains for training and development.

@ChrisS We couldn't find a good reason to use two domains
There's a two way transitive trust anyway so it's just a management boundary, not a security boundary and the same people manage the student portion of AD that would manage the fac/staff stuff

I suppose.. That does mean by default anyone with a login can see what shares exist on every server, have login privileges to every workstation, and a lot of other defaults you have probably changed...

@ChrisS Yeah, we don't really use "Authenticated User" anywhere, just because we have off-campus guests
All faculty/staff are created as members of a fac-staff group and all students are created in the students group

4:24 PM
Yeah; but it's there by default for a lot of security settings in Windows.

And those are the baseline "default" permissions on a lot of resources
The workstation thing is handled by denying logon locally to the "Employee Computers" OU to the students group in GPO
It really wasn't much work at all and we get rid of the overheard of a 2nd set of DCs/DNS, etc

Like I said, I have little doubt you've covered your bases; but you had to go through and put all those settings in place instead of it being the default.

yeah

I'm not sure how you had it setup, but I don't think I've got much overhead from having a few extra DC VMs around... But we're obviously a much smaller organization too.

Unlike a lot of universities, there is a single central IT department that controls everything
So, my team handles everything, regardless of what department whether its academic or administrative

4:29 PM
That probably works out quite well. I think when you dice things up people start getting separatist attitudes.

A lot of universities dont have that luxury and have separate child domains for each school on campus with separate IT departments, etc.
A lot of faculty see how its done elsewhere and get mad, because IT people at some places work for them. That's not the case here
It does make us a lot more agile with implementing new things. There's still political BS, but at least it's all internal
At one large state school around here, if you change majors into a new school, you even get a new email address with @school.uni.edu
Each school maintains a separate exchange infrastructure in their domain

That's just stupid... but I'm sure it was a decision made by a non-technical manager at some high level.

It's because the IT people are controlled by the departments, not by a central authority. You have deans and chairs making decisions and they're the ones signing the pay checks.

What school is this so we all avoid it?

These universities typically have a central IT authority, but that doesnt extent to faculty, only to staff. So faculty make up 80% of the employees and they get to ignore central IT
@Shads0 Let's just say that they're in the national news a lot lately

4:34 PM
Ahhh, right across the street, I see

@Shads0 If I was to go back to school it wouldn't be in PA more likely than not; and if I'm taking a job in education I'd be very careful to check out what's going on before signing up.

@Shads0 But they're not in any way unique. It happens at a lot of places.

where they do @school.uni.edu?

I suppose when you're on a teacher's salary being able to boss the IT peons around is meaningful.

@Shads0 ya. I wouldn't say that's common
but it's not rare either
That's an extreme example, but most large universities have fractured IT support similar to that

4:36 PM
Mine didn't do it, but IT seemed to be controlled by the faculty with one of the CS professors vying for their independence a lot (as in, telling us details of how they're mistreated and the state of the servers during a web programming class)

It's the small and mid-sized ones that have cohesive departments, but it's the big ones that have the funding
It's tough to decide which is the right path if you're considering a higher ed career

I'd provide well funding to anyone who can speed up restoring the company owner's dead laptop... Ticker has been running for about 45 minutes and says it has 1:07:02 to go

I've always been interested in it, though, I wonder how much different it is with public ed (as in, elementery/middle/high schools)

@Shads0 I think that's what Bart is in
It's really a sweet gig if you get into the right place and money isn't important to you
I make plenty to live comfortably, but I'm not driving a Mercedes and I live in a 900sq/ft one-bedroom apartment. The upside is that it's really generally low-stress and relaxed compared to corporate america

Thanks for the insight

4:45 PM
I have no doubt that I'd make at least 30-40% more elsewhere, and I do look at what's out there from time to time, but it's never been enough of a point for me to leave.

My big disadvantage now is that I work for a company that doesn't necessarily need me here 40 hours a week unless something breaks (which is why I was hired in the first place and that emergency period is slowly fading away) as well as working alone so I just have a fear that when I get to a company that actually has a full department, I'm going to be at a slight disadvantage, knowledge wise I consider myself a fast learner if I don't know something but working in a team environment like that
with a ton of people that are guaranteed to know a lot more than me s a bit daunting atm. I have c

@ChrisS: Can you provide a citation for this? serverfault.com/questions/183026/… In our case we're looking to go Datacenter -> Enterprise or Standard

@Shads0 If they hire you, then you have nothing to worry about
Working in a team is all about openly admitting when you are truly stuck and asking for help. Combine that with not poking your nose where it doesn't belong while still offering help when it's needed and you're pretty much done

Makes enough sense

@MikeyB I can't find anything where is specifically says "downgrades aren't possible", but running dism /online /get-targeteditions will tell you every option available (which will be none in a DC edition).

5:00 PM
@Shads0 Unless you work at SE. Then teamwork means being good at MW3

My K/D was terrible in MW2/blops
I can kick ass in Brawl, however

@Iain When you were trudging to 749fw, how many things in a row would you flag if you were to find a search term that was a gold mine, so as not to piss off the diamonds?

@MarkM I don't recall I think @Chopper3 had a word at 12 once and I ran out of flags on 2 occasions
what have you found to mine ?

5:15 PM
title:home router body:home router
:)
or literally just looking though and flagging stuff that belongs on unix.se instead
There is a lot of crap in that's not SA related but is probably over the head of most SU users.

@MarkM The home router stuff I would just pop in the vote to close room the linux stuff probably has a home here
bear in mind that U&L is late to the party

@Iain I was under the impression that if there are unanswered questions that aren't SA related about Linux that they should be flagged for unix.se

@ChrisS Works for me, thanks.

I don't flag anything with an accept for migration

@MarkM yeah I'm the same and I generally leave old ones that have upvoted answers too

I've set up fstab to auto mount media drives on a Linux Mint machine. The OS is installed on a IDE/ATA Disk while 3 SATA disks hold data to share. The BIOS has the ATA disk as first boot device. We have different views of what's on-topic, it seems

Client: "I ran 'chkconfig iomemory-vsl on' to enable the FIO cards and then 'reboot' to start the service." Me: cries silently

@Iain I don't think that just because SAs are usually more well equipped to answer Linux questions that we need to keep ones that aren't explicitly SA related. If you swap that with Windows, we wouldn't hesitate to migrate a question asking about why D:\ and E:\ keep changing letters.

@MarkM possibly
@MarkM this really helped me

Q: What are the best ways to find answers that should be flagged or edited?

ire_and_cursesI've been experimenting with the flagging system for the last couple of days. I have learned a few strategies, but I feel that I'm making little difference to the mountain of accumulated rubbish. Having easily run out of my 48 flags within a few minutes tonight, I am now helpless for another 19 ...

5:32 PM
Thanks for the tip. I'm almost exactly 100fw away, so that's only like...one billion successful flags.

@MarkM how many helpful flags to you have ?

I don't understand disputed. Both of the answers that caused the "disputed" status were deleted by mods.
Do you know how that works?

@MarkM Disputed is when another normal user flags your flag as incorrect before a mod gets to it.

Ohhhh
So even though mods agree with me, since someone else disputed it, I don't get the fw?
interesting

They don't count for your flag weight.

5:38 PM
@ChrisS it would have to be a 10k user

@MarkM The mod doesn't get to flag it helpful/unhelpful IIRC.
@Iain Yes, sorry, didn't mean just anyone...

I have 3 because I disagreed with flags that people have thrown on questions
@MarkM you need about 380 -390 flags to get the badge

Thats what I figured

Q: How many flags to reach 750 flag-weight?

Scorpi0750 is the asymptotic limit for flag weight, but it is known that it can be reached thanks to rounding. Suppose that a user has no invalid flags. How many flags does he need to reach the 750 limit? Related questions : Flag weight 750 reached?

and I don't think spam flags count either

why don't they just implement that system from Flag #1? Why start at 500?

5:45 PM
@Shads0 There's a badge at 500, which was the original cap
The increase to 750 w/ non-linear increases was added after, probably to keep the top flaggers flagging
Gamification at it's finest.

they have a new game now too - reviewer

people on SO have it already

Whats that?

they changed it to a silver badge - see the later answer

hm
Doesn't seem all that hard to get

Your flag numbers depress me, @MarkM. According to that it will take me about 80 flags to gain 8 weight.

@ScottPack I'm at the point where I need ~ 2 valid to get +1
I think about 30ish of those flags were from before the fw system too

@MarkM By my stats I'm at 642 with 105 flags. I do, however, have marked 26 posts as spam. So maybe it actually counts? I dunno.

5:55 PM
I have 7 declined
Including three (that were bullshit declines) when I was at 660
So it's a long road back from those

I don't think spam does count for fw
they are counted separately from mod flags on your profile too

How much do declines mark off?

-10 flat

10

regardless of where you are

5:57 PM
Ouch.

Which is BS -.-

So, yeah, there's teh difference.

yep

It should be like gains, proportional

I had one declined (incorrectly) when I was at 714

5:57 PM
You're just a worthless flagger.

@Iain Looks like the reviewer badge is actually live on SF too
It's listed in the badge list

A: Passive FTP Server Port Configuration Troubles Win2003

ChrisTurns out windows ftp client needed adding to the firewall LOL

Was my last declined flag, i said it should be a comment because of the format, not an answer as one was already supplied

@MarkM yep - but people on SO have it already

declined

@Iain Of course they do
I could ask how to herp a derp in FORTRAN on SO and get +50

6:00 PM
I answered a basic sed question there today and got +65

@Shads0 yeah; mod was dead wrong on that one.

Speaking of derp herping. I have to drive into the office because I need to borrow a 4-pin molex to sata power adapter. At least it'll get me out of the house.

@ChrisS ignore me the mod was wrong

@ScottPack f that, cut the wires and fabricate the harness yourself

I've got one, but it's a slightly longer drive to where I am.

6:31 PM
@Iain If you include a link to the sed manpage I'll give you another upvote :-)

@voretaq7 done :)

@Iain Upvoted.

and I upvoted your comment too

Links to the manpage: My politically correct way of grabbing you by your throat and shouting "RTFM YOU WORTHLESS MAGGOT!" in my best Drill Instructor voice.

Here on SF I usually do include links too

6:40 PM
Lets see if I can keep my streak of upvotes alive on m.SO

Q: Silver Reviewer badge and related stats in /review

MarkMWith the addition of the silver Reviewer badge, I've started to pay attention to more on the /review page than just the Q&As there. One thing that has me confused is that waffles states here that you need 1000 reviews and 200 actions in addition to Strunk&White to get the badge. What I n...

@voretaq7 your upvote pushed me over 200 rep so I just picked up a yearling badge too
and now a [badge:nice answer] too :)

@ChrisS Oddly enough, I couldn't find one. Last time I checked we had a fistful. One of the upsides of having a forensics lab is that we're typically well stocked.
Oh well. Since it's just for the weekend the SATA to SAS adapter will work just fine.

@ScottPack do you know what the music is on that time lapse photography link you posted on G+ ?

Hm, now review is working like I though it should in the m.so post. Maybe something weird browser-related on my side

sometimes you have to refresh the page

6:49 PM
It's working real-time for me now, but wasn't at all before
Oh well

@Iain I don't. It reminded me of Civ4, though I haven't installed it again to check.
Thanks for those likes, by the way. Until yesterday we were in the lead, then this morning the wife told me about somebody with 33. Assholes.

@ScottPack I tried shazam on it but it didn't recognise it
@ScottPack likes are easy

@MarkM mine is still b0rked :P

Which is precisely why I didn't feel so bad whoring for them.
I still haven't flashed the firmware on my camera. Maybe I'll do that this weekend.
What with today being a holiday, it's greatly increased my chore time frames.

which holiday is that ?

6:56 PM
Veteran's Day

Or, if you're part of the commonwealth, Remembrance Day
or, if you're part of the older generation, Armistice day

I am but it's not a holiday in the UK

Us civil servants get the day off.

That is surprising
I know it is a big holiday in Canada

We have Remembrance Sunday which is the closest Sunday to it and we have a 2 minute silence at 11am on 11/11
