9:16 PM
Aaaaand.
Two hundred.

@SPArchaeologist I doubt I am that impressive, I got the impression Twilight sparkle practically did have a photographic memory when reading stuff
I just like this avatar because it is twilight sparkle on fire

@SPArchaeologist Digimon crossovers? xD Granted... I can see it, especially with Tamers. :v
@trogdor From the small size, I thought it was an FiM-styled Ponyta or Rapidash.

I seem to recall her doing this in an episode actually
she was mad at,... something
it was basically an emote

Ahh.

a really awesome one
though I wouldn't be surprised if it was also a Pokemon shutout

Oh yeah, seeing the full thing, it's definitely a Rapidash reference. Note that she even loses her cutie mark.

yeah, that was it

@JoshuaAslanSmith Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty, and a cheeseburger, have to stop the villainous time-travelling team-up of King George, Hitler, and a five-ounce bottle of water, from stealing national landmarks like Mount Rushmore, the Golden Gate Bridge, and a Wal-Mart.

if anything I would suspect the cheeseburger to also be a villain

Shhhh. Don't give away the twist ending.

9:35 PM
sheesh, sorry, but it was a little obvious
why did they have him twirl his mustache and laugh manically every five minutes if they weren't telegraphing it?

That is a horse that goes so fast it caught on fire.
Which explain it's expression in that image.

I am unsure why a horse was chosen as a fire type

That is the pretty typical "OMG! I AM OF FIRE!" expression.

@trogdor Because it's a horse on fire.

of course, there was also a bird and a dog, at the very least

9:38 PM
If I am not wrong. Rapidash isn't really a fire type.

@Althis It is.

@Pixie I realize this, but it could have as easily been any other animal I suppose

Fire/Normal?

Nope, it's pure Fire.

I would figure if it is on fire it is fire type, usually pokemon, at least of that generation, were not specifically designed to throw you off the scent like that XD

9:41 PM
That does explain why the fire is not spreading.
It does run on plains.
A real life version of that species would be a natural disaster waiting to happen.

@JoshuaAslanSmith @Grubermensch @Shalvenay no game tonight. Forgot about a family thing tonight. :(
@JoshuaAslanSmith if you could let Ken know.

Only Litleo/Pyroar are Fire/Normal, for reasons I don't exactly understand, beyond probably "hey, there aren't any Fire/Normals." Normal typing is kind of... arbitrary. Useful in certain situations, but arbitrary. Fairy took some of its thunder, too.

why is fairy type taking normal types thunder? don't they have different traits?

A number of previously Normal Pokemon were recategorized as Fairy Pokemon.
Clefairy chief among them.

I always felt bad for the normal types.
Because they are cute, and they try really hard.
But in the end they just have to accept that no one is going to choose them over the rat that farts lightning.

9:46 PM
Normal used to be Pokemon that were basically just funny-looking animals with no element leanings in their attacks as well as... squishy pink things.
They took Clefairy and Jigglypuff over to Fairy (though Jiggly is Fairy/Normal) and left Chansey and Audino.

What about Mr Mime?

Mr Mime is Psychic/Fairy.

Did they at least leave us Mr Mime?
...

Nope!

They too all you had, Ratata bro...
Now there is only one way out for you.

9:50 PM
@waxeagle Aww too bad. Hopefully we'll get to clear the castle next week.

I hope so

to be honest, I actually never did use normal types if I could help it
I was a little busy trying to get the coolest looking Pokemon I could find in the 2-3 version I played

They were supposed to be really good against fighter, right?

and unfortunately, at least at the time, no normal type compared in my opinion to like, Charizard and Garidos

Or something like that?

9:52 PM
I think so?

that's the other thing, I really was not sure what they were useful against

Ok. Apparently normal are not worth the kilobites it takes to store them.
They now are literally rubbish against ANYTHING.

I think I did have a rattata like, every time I played
but that was only ever in the early game, I ditched him for cooler stuff when I was no longer struggling to fill my roster
wow
that is not cool XD

It's a useful typing in theory but a lot of the Pokemon in Normal are just not very good.

9:55 PM
Now Rattata jumps of the bridge.

so people have even less of a reason to use em

But that's not something that's really changed. It was always that way.

And hopes his ghosts don't follow him to the after life.
Because his ghosts are super effective against them.

@trogdor That is the purpose Rattata served. xD

@Pixie yeah, I figured

9:57 PM
Can only normal types use Hidden Power and Metronome?

Although I have to say, I'm personally fond of Raticate and have taken them to endgame before. :P

Because that would kinda be an upside, right?

cause Gary *************** oak showed up way too early and tried to screw me over every time

@Althis Both are Normal attacks. Metronome was the hallmark of Clefairy and Clefable, who at the time were normal. Everything can use Hidden Power.

Yeah. So apparently their only advantage is aping random types that are better than they are.

9:59 PM
Metronome is pretty useless in battle, it's just cool. :P

Have you seen a Rattata use a Metronome?

yeah, I was not fond of the literal randomness of metronome for serious fights

It is so cute.
He uses it's tail.
Also, something I never understood was the need for a Ground type.
I always thought that rock was more than enough.
But apparently it kicks ass currently.

Ground counters Rock

Apparently Ground is currently good against Fire, Poison, Electric, Rock AND Steel

10:02 PM
it isn't exactly the same, but yeah I can see why it might seem silly to have ground and rock both as elements

Most of which kinda make sense. Until you get to Rock and Steel.

wow

It does seem a little redundant, but the types are meant more to enrich the rock-paper-scissors combat element than necessarily make sense.

Pixie, please explain to me how Ground beats Rock.

I don't think being good against 5 different types is particularly balanced,....

10:02 PM
I will not doubt that Fairy beats Dragon.
That just makes sense.

@trogdor Oh, it's not. :P Pokemon has balance issues for sure.

But how the hell does a bunch of dirt beats a freaking knife?

wellll
you don't want to dig with a knife

In terms of Ground vs. Steel, earthquakes trash metal structures. :P Truth be told, i don't think it can be neatly explained. xD

Also.
Rock is still compressed ground.

10:04 PM
Pokemon never seemed too exceptionally concerned with explaining every type strength and weakness

I guess Ground beats Rock because... parental issues?

some make sense, fire beats plant, water beats fire, thunder beats water

Some rocks have terrible daddy issues.

@trogdor Nope. Again, it's more of an extension of rock-paper-scissors type matching to add complexity to play than something that has to make sense. It is a mess balance-wise, but there is at least an attempt. :P

Also, Rock beats Bug. for the most obvious reason possible.

10:06 PM
@Pixie I know, I was just mentioning that some actually DO make some sense

I wonder if they will ever create a Net type.

...the guy who reviews survival multitools has taken down his video of breaking a Crovel Extreme by digging a hole.

@trogdor Yeah, at least some do. xD

@Pixie The original ones at least.

And some have very specific logic behind them, like Steel > Fairy.

10:07 PM
I am fully aware that there are plenty that don't

It just got a lot more convoluted after gen IV.

I think poison might actually be good against ghost type
if I am right, that certainly makes no sense

@Pixie That was supposed to be cast iron, but I forgive them and accept that the translators might have mistranslated Metal.

@trogdor I was actually agreeing with you, I just responded to the wrong message, whoops. xD The "nope" was in relation to "Pokemon doesn't seem concerned with explaining..."

ah
XD

10:09 PM
@trogdor How do you poison that which has no life?

@Althis It is iron, but steel is the closest thing that's actually a Pokemon type. :P It's not a mistranslation.

@Althis exactly my point, if I am right at least

Ghost resists poison.

@Pixie Is it really a direct translation then?

I could be completely wrong, I think it may have been 10 years since I played Pokemon
@Pixie ok, I stand corrected then

10:10 PM
@trogdor you are wrong.

I had like zero idea how complex typing was when I was originally playing. xD
Typing charts are almost unreadable if you don't know what you're looking at.

Poison is bad against Ghost and Ghost is not particularly good against Poison either.

Ghost was probably one of the most broken types when I played

I think they may have only been weak against psychic, which was already way powerful, (and kinda hard to get) at the time

10:12 PM
Well. I have to go. I still haven't slept.
Anything.
For a lot of time.

now I am sure they probably have more weaknesses

yeah, get some sleep @Althis

@Althis sleep is gooooooooood

Ghost was so OP in gen 1, yes. xD

I picked one up as soon as I saw a ghastly
I also just loved the way his evolution into Haunter looked

10:14 PM
But I would like to say: For the longest time, I still kept a Pigeot because that was a freaking giant bird, Alakazan because his mustache was awesome, and a Dragonite because he always just seemed to be like a really nice guy(Despite Dragon's advantage against Dragon being BS)

Gengar was ok too,.. but I somehow didn't like the way he looked as much

And that is how I used to play Pokemon.
Nobody could kill you when you were 50 levels above them anyway.
Nighty night.

night

Seeya.
Haunter and Gengar are two of my favorites. Ghost is one of my fave types in general.

if I played again, I would probably still run them even if they were really weak
just cause I love them so much

10:18 PM
I think Gengar is either OU or Uber, if you're familiar with Pokemon tiers.

but at the time there just wasn't a downside to having them in my poke-hit-squad cause they were soooo goood
@Pixie I think I am not, at this point. I might have been once, like, 10 years ago

Looks like as of BlackWhite it was OU (Overused, which means the Pokemon is really viable and powerful), and Mega Gengar bumps it up to Uber (exactly what it sounds like :P) in XY.

but those rankings undoubtedly changed by now XD

Yeah, it switches up every time there's a new game, and sometimes just because people find different ways to use them. xD

so Gengar can evolve?

10:21 PM
Yeah, it has a Mega, which is like digivolution for Pokemon.

they changed so much since I left, it seems

They use them generally to power up popular but statistically bad Pokemon and to make overly strong Pokemon more overly strong. :P
There are some I honestly wish had just been given a second or third regular evo instead of a mega, but it wasn't unappreciated. I didn't think Absol or Mawile would ever get any attention.

10:36 PM
seems,... overdone
then again, this is Pokemon we are talking about
I am not personally of the opinion they needed to further complicate stuff
I was happy knowing my Pokemon had reached it's full evolution, I did not need them to make it so that the optimal strategy was mega evolving in the middle of a battle

I would have rather seen second and third normal evolutions for less-than-third-stage Pokemon that weren't strong enough and a rehaul of final evos' stats.
It is, in large part, the stats that absolutely kill balance.

I imagine so
during first gen I think that was already a slight issue
but the real balance killer was just that some types were simply overpowered

It was already a major issue, but the game doesn't require you to use much strategy beyond type efficacy, so it's not as easy to see.
Well, it's both base stats and attack choices, anyway.

oh god wat

Mewtwo, being a special Snowflake, has two mega forms. So does Charizard.

10:52 PM
I did actually catch a Mewtwo once, but by then I think I was having trouble not killing him
I didn't need his broken powers
now apparently he can punch things

If a legendary doesn't flee, my goal is to just... throw pokeballs at it. Maybe lightly tap it on the shoulder once in a while. xD

he didn't run
he was a boss
even though my guys were, I think lvl like 70 and he was 50 or something

Yeah. In such cases, I try to avoid damaging the legendary more than I absolutely have to, for fear I'll lose it.

I know I was over his level at any rate

And I never use my masterball. I don't know why. There are so few opportunities in a given game that I would need a masterball, and I know what they are ahead of time. Yet I feel compelled to save it for... nothing. xD

10:55 PM
I did that too, but HE was the one I knew I needed it for
any other legendary I was interested in, and that was also actually in whatever version I was using, was already mine

Mewtwo in a masterball is a good pairing, anyway. Classic.

even if I wasn't using them
yeah, I figured that too
he is pretty awesome
he deserves it

I was upset that you couldn't get Mew though. xD
I'm watching Metronome-only battles now. They're pretty funny.
One guy just got Explosion, simultaneously taking out himself and his teammate. He wiped his own team. :P

lol
that, and the occasional tail whip and growl, were pretty big reasons for me to not like metronome

I remember one time when I was a kid playing Pokemon Stadium with my friend. I looked at Clefable's wings and said, "I wonder if Clefable can fly..?" I used Metronome next turn, and it used Fly. :P

11:08 PM
@BESW conspiracy is the only explanation

It was going to be a great example of Ground breaking Rock.
(Well, Ground breaking Metal, but close enough.)

metal is a different element in pokemon!

But Ground is still strong against Steel. :P

And actually, the reason the crovel broke is that it wasn't properly heat-treated, so the Metal was more like Rock than it should have been.

11:46 PM
@trogdor You there?

11:58 PM
Morning :D
