12:00 AM
Hello!

How's everything going today?

Today I completed the third and penultimate part of my lich-ification ritual, so I am feeling pretty excellent.
Progress is good!

Eww, Lich :P

Morning all!

Morning MM :)

12:17 AM
@Nyoze Mine now.
@Miniman I like our arrangement.

I like sharing my mornings :)

Everyone's happy! Though if you have excess mornings to share, I'll take 'em

/sends Sunshine and happiness via the magical internet-waves.

@Magician Yeeeessssss...[strokes evil vizier moustache]

Technically Magician and I already have the same morning.
@Miniman [shakes fist dramatically]

12:24 AM
I'm torn...
I don't know if I want to focus on a Fighter, a Rouge, or a Gun Slinger...

@Nyoze Cosmetic substances aren't known for their killing potential, so I'd recommend not playing a Rouge :P

Haha.
I can buy vanish pots for 100gp for 2 turns of invis, which will let me reliably get sneak attack damage. If I stack focused shot on top of that, I'll have 1d8+5+2d6 damage at level 5...
Or 3d6 if I don't dip, but looking at Alch mutagens with an extra +4 to dex...
If I do it with a fighter though, I can get...
28 Dex..., so that's 19 AC with no armor, and +4 damage to every attack.
Gunslinger I can add my full dex mod to damage, so +9 to every hit... But guns are pains =\
Although, I'm tempted by a Dex/Int Magus as well...
I can get a further +3 dodge bonus to AC... Just means I'll need to use a scimitar and dervish dance, but I can live with that.

@Magician It's not 11 yet and I've used up all of today's morning.

@BESW I think my scheme is working, because i'm actually here before noon.

12:42 AM
@BESW sorry, here now

No worries.

I was actually watching Daredevil with my mom

Ah, shiny.

I am supremely surprised, but she really likes it

It's the Star Trek IV of comic book 'television' adaptations.

12:45 AM
it has it's problems, I would say, but I like it
I don't know how much she would care about all that, but it might actually help that he looks like a toned down Zorro instead of wearing his usual costume

I've been scared off because of the movie :\

but I say again, maybe she wouldn't have actually minded that
It isn't like the movie
however much that helps
I personally think it is much better done, though I think it is a little silly that they seem to be eschewing his costume,.. who knows, maybe they do have more viewers because he doesn't look quite as silly,... but maybe they lost more hardcore fans because he doesn't actually look like Daredevil

He gets a more comicky costume in the very end.

ah

It's a little rushed, unfortunately.

12:49 AM
I thought they might handle it that way, but I am not at the end, so I have not seen it
aw, dangit
not that I am surprised
they would have to force it, seeing as they completely ignore it so far

The setup could have been brought in earlier.
Specifically there's a pretty cool theme symbolised by the costume, but the impact of it is undermined by one side of the theme not being shown until late in the game.

mm
I am on episode,.. 8 I think
and I can see some things that might explain later why he would get a costume
but nothing entirely obvious yet

The Three Questions is a blog post that I think will be very useful to link in various Stack questions.
(It may also be a good framework tool for @Shalvenay, though sadly its intended context/use is obviated by many of his groups' traditions.)

I gotta go for a bit, who knows, maybe if the Park is closed today I might just be back here in 10 minutes XD

ttfn
Here's a fun ngram: sunk like a _____.
And in response to the obvious question, "sunk like a summer" is actually "sunk like a summer pond."
And here's the ngram for trapped like ____.

1:13 AM
o/ @pixie

@Shalvenay Hello.

@Shalvenay @Pixie Morning!

@Miniman And evening. xD

@BESW -- it sounds like a good tool in some respects, yes -- and I agree, the game where the problem char sprang from is very, very deficient in that regard

@Shalvenay @Pixie Morning :D

1:15 AM
@Pixie You were the one I was geeking out with about ngrams, right?

do we have an @Althis and an @Sandwich as well?

[gestures upward]

@Nyoze I wish it were morning here, I slept a lot of the day and wasted most of the rest. :P
@BESW I do remember them coming up!

@Pixie That's the best kind of day isn't it?

also, @Pixie -- do we want to handle working around me missing last session now?
and @Nyoze -- you want to hop over to the backroom and wrap up what we had going 1on1?

1:18 AM
@Shalvenay Actually doing real work at the moment, so very distracted at the moment =\

aaah, no worries m8

I'm happy to, but quality (Not that there was any to begin with lol) will be lacking

@Shalvenay I'll want to ask Trogdor for clarification on the way he suggested to handle that, but I think we basically boost your exp so you can acquire a similar amount of skills to other people once you start playing.

right :)

@Pixie Actually, depending on how the game was working...

1:20 AM
@PIxie -- did you get my point from last time about George being an aggressively safe flyer btw? (i.e. someone whose decision-making horizon extends far enough out to plan for and preempt potential trouble instead of letting it sneak up on him)

If you've increased the target difficulties in response to players having larger dice pools, then a new player with just Do Anything 1 will RAPIDLY accrue XP from failure and be able to effectively catch up to the others.

@BESW I am still puzzling out target difficulty. xD

MM Was the only person with a skill 4 I think?

or in other words --it's not that he never fails, its that he fails safe.

So long as you play failure as fun to reduce the frustration of it, the system self-balances interestingly.

1:21 AM
Wait, that's right.

14
Q: How many dice does the GM roll when challenging the players?

ZibbobzI'd like to run a game of Roll for Shoes, but I'm not sure how many dice I roll when the characters face various challenges. I'm under the impression that it's supposed to be the same number of dice the character uses, but that seems to make impossible tasks far too easy to perform. Is there a ...

Trogdor had the 4, and he was gone for an hour in the middle of it.

@Nyoze Not me, @trogdor docs.google.com/document/d/…
Ah, ninja-ed

:P

The master of wolf shoes

1:22 AM
I love that skill. Shoes get you anywhere 4.

(The last suggestion in Greener's answer is how I do it.)

thanks to TV, whenever someone says "dw" to me, I simultaneously read "don't worry" and "doctor who"

@Shalvenay I did. How do you want to handle this in game? It's also worth noting that, when you're coming in with a preestablished character, you have to keep in mind that your character's actual abilities are not set in stone.

@Pixie -- I think most of handling it will come into play when you narrate how the failures occur

@doppelgreener See also Dungeon World, DreamWeaver, dual wield, and Deathwing.

1:24 AM
And Darkwing Duck.
@Shalvenay I have been going very, very silly thus far.

@doppelgreener Also, on the topic of confusing acronyms, my mother: "Someday I'm going to look at your things that say 'RPG' and I'm not going to think, 'So, he's programming business applications!'"

@BESW At least she doesn't think you're building rocket-propelled grenades.

@Pixie You mean the Pathfinder RPG system isn't a military secret for sending Nissan's overseas to kill people?
2

@BESW report program generator is my favourite RPG to do with my friends

weather, other pilots being (sadly) incompetent, and Murphy kicking over avionics are all reasonable things to trigger a failure -- but the response to that failure will be a thought-out one. Take a deep breath, wind the clock, go "Can you believe that sonofabitch is still flying?!" to borrow a USAF line, and only then make your next move in a thoughtful manner vs. panic'ed stuff where decision-making breaks down and things get ugly quickly

1:28 AM
It's kinda like the difference between my NSA meetings and other NSA meetings.

@Shalvenay It will vary depending on the situation and what occurs to me. Also, I'm not an avionics expert and probably never will be, and I'm specifically avoiding a lot of complexity and realism for this game. It also moves kind of fast given the number of players we have, so that's something you'll want to keep in mind as well.

So Althis is MIA, and Trogdor is out at the park. I think everyone else is here though?

No word from @Sandwich

Our psion failed to get rid of ghosts with a lightning bolt, but it still caught them on fire. Then they got stuck in a wall they were trying to pass through, responding to our mage's successful attempt at persuading them to go ruin someone's new apartment (which was new because he switched the doorplates). It is not a realistic game. :P
Then a gnome got thrown through a window, and back out it again.

And our magician is only really good at taking the credit of the Psion's work...

1:35 AM
@Nyoze Hey, I turned invisible and healed some gnomes

He takes credit for his own magic and other people's. That's twice the magic.

I wonder if they'll become cohorts now that you've healed them. You need to make a leadership roll :P

And I blew the ghosts out of the contained area in the first place

Oh they'll definitely follow Miniman around if he lets them.

Roll to see if he lets them?

1:37 AM
"Am I feeling magnanimous enough to allow these lesser beings to accompany me?"

Spend XP to gain the skill Smug charity 2.

... Cannon Fodder >_>

 Roll For Shoes Chat

A chat for OOC chat in a RFS game

Well, I was catching hints of a gnome-related quest earlier.

Do we want to move to the OOC room so we stop cluttering chat for people who aren't interested?

With phrases like "Our psion failed to get rid of ghosts with a lightning bolt, but it still caught them on fire," and "Then a gnome got thrown through a window, and back out it again," who isn't interested?

1:41 AM
@BESW Also skills like "Psionic Bar Crawl 3", "Wolf Shoes can get you anywhere 4", and "Taking the Credit 3"

@Miniman They can get you into a bar, in fact. Even if you are a wolf.

@Pixie I think I saw an episode of Big Wolf on Campus about that.

It has been ages since I've seen that show.

Sadly, it's in "Keep circulating the tapes" mode.
There was never any home video release or proper syndication, just fan VHS recordings.

That's pretty common for shows of that era.

1:56 AM
However, this is a thing that went around the BWoC fandom a few years ago:
(Actually, I lied. There IS an official VHS release--of the first season, in French.)
(For some reason that keeps slipping my mind. [grin])

French? :\

French.
(Canadian TV show, French dubs are inevitable, and probably somehow got around an IP/copyright issue that makes it hard for the original recordings to be distributed.)
(That, or the original English recordings are lost BBC style and the French is the only stuff available anymore with high enough quality.)
('Cause the fan recordings that get circulated? Only look good next to some of the recovered Doctor Who episodes.)
...Hm. I keep forgetting how great BWoC is for plot seeds.
I went in to clean that up so it'd be more legible and rated on the merits of its content alone, but... nope.
Just doing a copy edit.

2:47 AM
Okay. So.
My Dervish Dancing Magus has... 23 AC and Touch AC with no armor.
Come at me Monks!
WB @Pixie
Wait, plus my mutagen, so 25AC...

3:43 AM
Here's a fun ngram: body is __% water

@BESW I see a longterm trend toward the body being 100% water. [/unjustified extrapolations]

Unjustified Extrapolations is a good name for a band.
It would also make a great hashtag.

Hashtag for sure.

3:59 AM
#unjustifiedextrapolations #forsure.

@BESW yes good excellent work :D

These sentences could describe the same event: There were explosions and children screaming. The kids were excited to see the fireworks.
words

4:25 AM
@BESW How big is the Fourth of July in Guam?

Not as big as Liberation Day.
It'll be noisy, and there are parties, but Liberation Day and New Year are bigger and noisier and more dangerous.

That makes sense
I'm originally from Maryland, where we take our Fourth of July very seriously, and I'm curious to see how it looks all the way over here in California.

Oh, and we have public firework displays on all three days.

I think that's about the norm for any reasonably sized community in the US.
(Well, on the two days that we observe)

4th of July here means "not be entirely sure whether they're shooting guns or firing fireworks all night, though probably some mix of both, and probably some not entirely legal fireworks."

4:31 AM
I used to have that exact problem at my old house
though I am fairly certain there were more guns being shot up than fireworks

Yeah, private fireworks are illegal here, but that doesn't stop many people. Guns are more of a problem, though less now than when we were kids.
Pretty sure a guy in the village down the road where I grew up had a submachine gun of some sort.

Some fireworks are legal here, but I don't think they all are.

@Pixie which state/territory are you in?

Got that reversed. :P I know some are legal.

New Years and Liberation Day are evenings to stay under a concrete roof and away from windows.

4:34 AM
@BESW yeah, I think it slowed down and possibly stopped by the time I moved, to be fair
at least in that area, but I wouldn't know now really

@Grubermensch I am not 100% comfortable with being that specific in public, I have had some issues with people following me around the internet in the past. >_> Looking it up though, sounds like fireworks that shoot up in the air aren't legal here.

@Pixie Fair enough

that is more than the right of anyone on the internet really
never know what crazy people you would run into

@trogdor Oooh, you're here! We resumed RFS, you should come jump back in.

mk

4:41 AM
@trogdor Well that was awkwardly bad timing on my part

lol
no problem
not your fault I wasn't here
XD

I've revealed to the state before, not sure if I've said it here. I might get to a place where I'm comfortable again, but it's happened twice that I gave someone my username on one site, and then they used things they found (including my friendlist) to track me elsewhere and watch what I was posting without saying anything, and then they used the things I said about myself as justification. =w= But I did realize that it's awfully easy to do.

@BESW I've been compiling a list of the bandnames (and albums) of RPG General Chat... currently up to 81. Enough for a big music festival.

@Adeptus Chatsplosion Fest

@Adeptus You've done searches for older material, right?

4:45 AM
I almost have trouble believing it is only 81

@BESW Oh yes. I wouldn't have half as many if I hadn't

it's been coming up since I started on the site, at least
band name this band name that
lol

I'm particularly fond of "Bloodthirsty Nouveau Riche Gangster Donald Trumps."

4:57 AM
those were some interesting chat flags...

I'm probably glad I missed them?

@BESW But it's soooo long, and if you make it an acronym it just sounds like a donkey having a heart attack.

Silly, their naming convention follows their namesake's: just call them "TRUMP," using gold ink/pixels when possible, and be done with it.

They better be rich enough to crawl out from under all the trademark lawsuits.

5:10 AM
I keep looking at 81 and seeing it as an emoticon.

now that you say that,.....

@BESW you probably should be
there were crude anatomical references

Quite astonishing levels of sexism

@Pixie now i see it... and it's just staring at me... it's like the Onion emoticon or something.

all we need is some racism and some general bigotry and we have a whole set?

5:14 AM
@doppelgreener That's what I was trying to remember. I was like "someone in a cartoon makes this face, who is it?"

Yesssss.

wow
what a resemblance

Where's that guy from? He's creepy.

he looks kinda familiar, but I probably only saw him in passing if anything

5:16 AM
@Miniman Steven Universe. His name is Onion.

@Miniman You don't know the half of it.

gotta go for a bit

I would provide examples of his behaviour but all I can find on youtube are severely cropped recordings.
Unfortunately defeating the Google video recognition algorithms also requires defeating good cinematography.
and I would not wish anyone's first experience of this show to be in such conditions.

People actually theorize that he's the big bad.
I do not put much stock in these theories, but they exist. :P

I can see why they might conclude that, but I like him just being this weird dude who drives a hard bargain.

5:20 AM
I think I do, too.

5:31 AM
@Miniman Good edit on the permanency question, I'd been puzzling over how to phrase that one.

user61230
Did someone say "puzzling"?

Yes
I dare say, what magic have I triggered with this word
Or ask, rather

user61230
You have brought forth the Box of Mysteries, wherein is contained Various Assorted Mysteries!

@Emrakul [blinks]

user61230
5:37 AM
Oh wow, that's actually a great fit. "Professor Angell's Box" is apparently actually a thing.

@doppelgreener Thanks, btw.

5:50 AM
@doppelgreener So, um. Storm. I'm moving Geek Night to Geek Late Morning Into The Afternoon As Weather Permits.

6:06 AM
Ah man I missed it
I just woke up a second ago

Same here.
I am not even sure what even I missed.
I've still got double vision.
Who are you again?

Looks like RFS was played for an hour or two without us

@BESW Late Morning being what time?

Erm.. 2:13AM currently

@doppelgreener ...whenever after 1030 enough people show up?
I'm not sure we'll get much of a turnout, just because folks will be busy putting up shutters and such.

6:14 AM
Mm, and not getting all rained on.
Or rained in.

Speaking of weather... Britain recently had their hottest day ever (or in a long time, whatever) of 36C. Living in a place where 40+ is a normal summer temperature, I am amused at their level of discomfort.
Having said that... if it ever snowed here, I'd totally not cope.

@Adeptus Was it humid or not?

Jeez 97 is your hottest day ever?
We get that Daily in Georgia at like 200% humidity

@Sandwich Not our hottest day ever. Adeptus and I live in Australia, where that temperature is normal and expected in summer.

@doppelgreener Don't know, I didn't pay that much attention. If it was humid, then I sympathise with them. Dry & hot, I can deal with. Humid & warm, I struggle.

6:21 AM
You get 97 degrees and humidity plus snakes and box jellyfish in Australia
And Cane toads

@Sandwich Urgh, cane toads.

There are several factors at play in Britain's heat wave. First, it's highly abnormal for Britain, so the contrast is much greater than it would be for someone who's used to these temperatures. Second, it is very humid in Britain. Third, the vast majority of houses have no air conditioning.
People have died, and more are likely going to.

Cane toads have to be the worst thing in Australia
Dont let your pets outside, they could eat one and die from horrible poison

Yeah, a big issue for weather severity is simply whether or not the population is prepared for it.
@Sandwich Our neighbour lost a dog that way.

@Sandwich Melbourne gets 40ºC+ in Summer, but it's dry heat, and wonderful to stroll around in. Brisbane gets 30ºC in Summer, near 100% humidity, and it's awful. If it goes well above 30, it's a day to spend locked indoors in air conditioning, venturing out only as the caveman would, to hunt and gather and feed.

6:24 AM
@Sandwich Depends where in Australia. It's a big place - roughly as big as USA. We have tropical through to cool temperate. Cane toads & box jellyfish are mostly in the tropical north.

Also, not all those animals exist in the same states.

I would just like to take a moment to boast about Guam's weather.

(Remember our island is about as big as the continental USA.)

Do you guys have mountains to snowboard on in Australia

6:26 AM
@BESW I see your island wavers between Summer and Very Summer.
Or Lesser Summer and Greater Summer?

user61230
@doppelgreener That's California.

@Sandwich A small number of snowboardable mountains.

user61230
We don't have "winter." We just have "milder summer."

@Sandwich There's a few mountains in NSW/Vic that have snow in winter, yes
I hear NZ is better for that sort of thing, though

@Emrakul Not all of California. San Francisco is sort of perpetually springtime, but without the rain.

6:29 AM
@Sandwich I know some people go to Cradle Mountain in Tas as well?

I hear there are lots of deadly things in Australia, and that scares me a little

It is just past the middle of winter here, and I left home in a jacket this morning for the first time in a while. It was something like 12 degrees in the morning when I left. Then we had a video conference with our colleagues much further south, who were bundled up in jumpers and jackets and one of them had a big scarf. It had hit something like -7 degrees there overnight, and was still freezing.
@Sandwich Where do you live?
@Adeptus Yep, there we go.

@Adeptus Man, you folks must really hate Mercator.

East coast United States

6:32 AM
@Sandwich
[Deadly things](www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNEeq5qGh8I)

SE: 1 - Nyoze: 0

=\
I give up lol

Needs a http.
[Deadly things](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNEeq5qGh8I)

@Sandwich There are lots of deadly things in the US, too, though

6:35 AM
@Miniman Americans, for one.
3

Cars

@Sandwich We don't have bears, coyotes, wolves, foxes, recluse spiders or black widows. You just have lots of other less dangerous animals, and even a deer could kick someone's ribs in.

Cars are the deadliest thing in the US according to death numbers

Not cigarettes? Or boozes?

Nope, cars

6:36 AM
Those last two bear dwelling on for a moment - it's no wonder America's scared of Australian Huntsman spiders, which are virtually harmless if a bit of a shock sometimes to discover. You have ones that look similar (recluses) that are terrifying.

Recluse spiders and Black widows are very reclusive though

Yeah, recluses are quite terrifying. But they are so rare I've never encountered one, nor do I expect to.

I've never seen one before in my entire 27 years

Black widows are... not as rare.

Black widows infest houses.

6:37 AM
I've seen at least 4 widows.
Never an infestation, though.

White Tips and Red Backs are scary though :(

@doppelgreener I probably killed a lot of wolf spiders while I was in college.

Hahaha, wolf spiders.

White Tips don't kill, but they are common as anything and leave a horrible infection :(

On Guam? Wolf spiders and I are cool.

6:38 AM
I did hear this one story though
About a guy in my high school named Tommy Glascock

In South Carolina? They're wearing enemy colours and are considered combat targets.

You really don't wanna get bitten by a wolf spider, but mostly, I just ignore them.

Who got bit on his neck by a Brown recluse and had to be rushed to the emergency room

The first time I saw one, when I was little, my sister and I thought it was a tarantula. We climbed on the couch and screamed for our mother, who rolled her eyes, said, "That's not a tarantula!", and got an ice cream bucket and a piece of paper to throw it outside.

6:39 AM
@Pixie Eh, ours just sorta itch. Granted I've only been bitten by the smaller ones.

Here's the list of our common spiders:
- Funnelwebs. Build a giant distinct web if they're there at all, will be found in your yard most likely. Nice and obvious. Hunt and kill or leave well alone.
- Redbacks. Tiny. Lazy as hell though: their web consists of a single strand from floor to ceiling or wall to wall. Either you'll never discover the spider exists, or it'll be completely obvious. Hunt and kill.
- Huntsman spiders. These can get pretty big. Physically they're harmless, the most they can do is hurt when they bite. But they'll stay away from you, they'll stay on your wall half the t
Other spiders: not really common or special.

@BESW I've never been bitten by one, but we have some really big ones. From what I hear, it is not a fun bite. Not likely especially dangerous though.

Daddy longlegs: not actually spiders, also harmless.

Daddy longlegs scare the bejeezus out of me :(

@Nyoze They do?

6:41 AM
I love huntsman's though. Explain that =\

They shouldnt, they're harmless

@doppelgreener Thank you. (Although what you call daddy longlegs are different from what we call daddy longlegs, past conversations have ascertained.)

Oh yeah, I can't stand them.

They look like those spider bots from Johnny quest

@Pixie I don't remember them being different... This is going back like 15 years to American spiders though...

6:41 AM
So ridiculous looking

@Sandwich Cars are the leading cause of accidental death in the US.

Maybe it wasn't Australia, then! I could be misremembering.

@Pixie So could I. :(

Because being bitten by a spider isn't accidental

@Pixie Wikipedia suggests there's three insects called that, but the two spider-looking ones are still just relatively harmless arachnids that at best hunt tiny insects.

6:44 AM
@Nyoze Does a daddy longlegs look like a little bean with big long legs?

They're like little crabs that eat house pests and waggle a little as if in the wind to disguise themselves.

A tiny bean yes

@Pixie More like a pinhead.

Jul 12 '13 at 13:00, by Jonathan Hobbs
@BESW I just learned that the thing we call Daddy Longlegs here are not spiders

6:45 AM
@Pixie Aussie ones.

@Pixie thats the one

@Pixie Hide that behind a mercy-click, maybe?

@BESW Can do!

Lol

6:45 AM
(for viewers' reference, that thing is tiny and could fit on a coin)

@Nyoze is scarier

Oh, no, that's not the same was what Nyoze posted. It is a harvestman.

That's scary stuff.

Nyoze mercy click that jank

I stand corrected then, our daddy longlegs aren't american ones.

6:46 AM
American Daddy Longlegs are adorable and eat tiny mosquitos and other small bugs

And the ones Nyoze linked actually are spiders. Harvestmen are not.

Everyone in America Hates Mosquitos
Thats a 100% figure right there

Here, there's a myth that daddy longlegs are super poisonous, but their mouths are too small to bite. It's not true, on either counts. xD

@Nyoze ....seriously, somebody got a cone snail and a hermit crab mixed up? [sigh]

Hermit crabs are cute
Cone snails are Snails

6:50 AM
Cone snails are venomous predators with a hypodermic tooth.

@Pixie We have that myth too

(Though, thinking about it, I think we also have cellar spiders, and I think they are also daddy longlegs. I'm pretty sure the one that was in my bathroom the other day was a cellar spider. If it has big ol legs... it's a daddy longlegs.)

Oh yeah thats them
They're black over here though

Okay, I'm gone again. Have fun :)

I'm working really hard not to make Luna Eclipsed references here.
