Are Blackberries still used today?
$54 is expensive for one?
@JourneymanGeek Groundnut = peanut?

10:27 AM
wHO KILLED THE BOT?
Was it drugs?

it was me
fracking cylon
dude just open the link in a new tab

lol
@FleetCommand I've gotten a decent nose for those
but the simplest way is to do a text search on SE for the same content
perfect match is likely an audit
I haven't seen a gibberish-edit audit in a while either.

or click the link on the side

hi

10:35 AM

@AndyK what software are you using to manage the incoming jobs?

huh? @Burgi

I don't think any place I worked in used ITIL

they guys, they just run the stuff when they feel it is the right time

user226528
10:37 AM
Thanks guys, I got it working.

like when you want to pee, you take out your hum hum and you pee

wtf?

they do the same with deployment

user226528
W.T.F?

you hear me @Burgi, you hear me
you hear me @fleet, you hear me

10:38 AM
@AndyK if a user in location A has a problem where do they report that problem?

no where
that's why the comp I'm working at, have so many probs

well you need to start with that

they are lagging in everything

user226528
@AndyK And here I thought it is quite clear that WTF came as a result of me hearing you.

i suggest osticket its free

10:40 AM
#lmao

@FleetCommand agreed

@AndyK try osticket.com

Thank ye very much!

checking @FleetCommand and @Burgi

10:41 AM
I am popular.

@Boris_yo you are an industry leader

user226528
Ah, do Americans work with millimeters a lot?

@FleetCommand NASA uses metric as standard

user226528
By the way, what's the Imperial equivalent of millimeters?

16ths
@AndyK a central web-based ticket system will let your global teams co-ordinate on larger issues/deployments
you can also see over time if there are local reoccurring issues
your end users are kept up-to-date with how their problem is progressing
there are better products than osticket but it is free

10:57 AM
@Burgi
thing is the team are remote

web based

and they enjoy some kind of independance

@FleetCommand thou, maybe?

that has to change then

we are trying to reign in
but we are unsure on how to do that

10:58 AM
(thousands of inches)

without causing rebellion

fire the people who are issues, promote the ones willing to bend to your iron rule

there have been some traumas already, due to that
tbh, I don't believe that fire and hire
is a good solution in the long run
it will have to be more indirect

having a ticket system will help especially if you sell the idea to the team leads

@Burgi Except when they don't :)

11:01 AM
@DavidPostill they are meant to
@AndyK this is a people issue not a technology one.

it is @Burgi

if i were you i would visit each site and do audits and bring each team on board with the idea of a ticket system individually

that's an idea
we don't have a control room here yet

a little inter-team rivalry might help "oh the team in location A is closing X number of tickets with a 98% satisfaction rate. can you do better..."

> The United States and United Kingdom have announced that laptops, e-readers and almost any other electronic device that is not a phone will be banned from cabin luggage on some flights.
GTFO

11:09 AM
@AndyK in my old place, we used to have seperate tags for seperate locations. We did help with emergency stuff as needed and vice versa.

can you be more precise @JourneymanGeek?

@AndyK essentially we had a "singapore" queue and a "orbital mothership" queue and so on

+1

but we had access to both. While the mothership handled their tickets, they handled ours and vice versa
we also had "per team" queues
So we'd pass on tickets to say R&D

@AndyK you and someone from HR need to go visit your teams ASAP to win them over and stamp out any dissent
then you need to get a full asset list of kit done
you might find that location D has 10 spare laptops or something that location B needs

What do developers want? And how do they get the job done? Every year since 2011, we’ve asked developers these questions (and many, many more) as part of our annual Stack Overflow Developer Survey, the largest and most comprehensive survey of developers in the world.

More than 64,000 developers told us this year how they learn and level up, which tools they’re using, and what employers should know about working with developers.

Our first analysis of these results is now live.

Check out the findings now to see which technologies are the most popular, most loved, and most dreaded in 2017. You’ll al …

Airport staff manage to smuggle a bomb past security by bypassing screening so we ban security screened passenger electronics. Logical.

a monthly conference call with all your remote team leads will also allow you to get an oversight of all the big issues and planned deployments

Or is this all a plot to boost sales of Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphone/tablet/dockable desktop hybrid?

cheers @JourneymanGeek

11:40 AM
@TOWMN I think its just truculance about a certain ban not working

@TOWMN it's a 'terroism' thing
lol i think they just realised that if you peirce a laptop battery, bad times
As I've pointed out previously, we are luckg that 99% of terrorists are infact frikkin idiots

do you remember when that car bomb got towed away because they hadn't put enough money in the meter?

wut
hahaha
I walked past a car bomb in birmingham once :/

@djsmiley2k I cycled past a car bomb in London once, 2 minutes before it exploded.

11:55 AM
@DavidPostill ouch
we were there hours before
that was a very weird day

2 December 1980: A device exploded at Princess Louise Regiment Territorial Army Centre, Hammersmith Road, London W6, injuring five people.

> The car had been ticketed and towed away at around 3:30 a.m. — roughly two and a half hours after the discovery of the first vehicle, the police said. If the cars were supposed to explode in a terrorist spectacular, the plot had clearly gone awry.
@DavidPostill irish terrorists

@Burgi Yep

12:25 PM
lol

@Burgi lol "When on your face and turned on," - you have to be turned on for them to work :)

why does she appear to be naked?

@djsmiley2k i think @DavidPostill has answered your question...

1:25 PM
@djsmiley2k Because she is "turned on"?

There are only a few things that you need to know about today’s episode:

Joel is away so Jay has taken over the podcast using Stack Overflow’s new patented JoelBots™ technology.

We are joined by data scientists Dr. Julia Silge and Dr. Dave Robinson to talk about some of the most interesting and fun questions from this year’s Developer Survey. Over 64,000 developers responded to questions like “What languages would you like to stop using?” and “What fictional programmer is the most annoying/realistic/inspirational?” (And why is the answer to all three “Mr. Robot”?) …

@XKCD meh, bit of a dud

1:34 PM
I thought that was quite terrible in the best way

wikipedia for a start?

@defalt the authoritative source is the 802.11 specification

2:15 PM
@djsmiley2k even wikipedia doesn't explain its authentication process
@Bob do you have a link?

@DavidPostill there's a mistake in your answer for the mod election:
"Using a dupe hammer to close as question" as should be a
.............hey @JourneymanGeek , am I going to be due for a year suspension from chat? did getting banned for 30 minutes and did I get banned another occasion too?

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere don't put yourself in a situation where you need to be suspended, and this will not be an issue.

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Thanks. Well spotted. Fixed.

I guess it doesnt matter anyways, if it'll happen it'll happen. I can't control the rules of suspension here

2:26 PM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere you're the master of your own behaviour.
Really, its not that hard to contribute positively to chat.

I sure am, which means I don't see merit in changing

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Hmm.

Don't worry I don't seem to have the slightest contribution compared to the big boys so permanently removing me will be a no brainer
.. :/

heh. Looking through the old election chat.
@allquixotic made a hilariously wrong statement
in Super User 2014 Election, Apr 22 '14 at 14:25, by allquixotic
I think if you can get 2-3 solid years out of a user, as an active participant and moderator, you've gotten enough "value" out of them at that point that there's not really much more they can do; their contribution kind of plateaus out
We're all mostly still here ;p

@DavidPostill the answer to question 8. feels like you went a bit off the mark. it never claimed that regular users have the responsibility to be helpful. Maybe you forgot to explain some of your thoughts or it's just me

2:34 PM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere (shrug) it's just you :)

okay :)
now that they mention it I feel like tackling those 50,000 answer-less questions. Byeee going on a mountain hike be back in a few hours! :)

2:47 PM
...........WHY??? ugh. some of these questions.
https://superuser.com/questions/304539/windows-restarting-certain-applications-after-a-windows-update

and if you did experience it on all OS'es then why didnt you tell us that

you could edit it...
you'd get free 2 rep

Too late

is it because I posted it here and you guys edited it before I got to?
never sharing things with you ever again

yes
if you see something that needs editing, just make the edit don't ask about it

2:53 PM
parliment is locked down

how bout you do the peer review while I do the small edits :D

that's what the edit queue is for

@Burgi there's been a bit of a spate of activity the last few days it seems
meanwhile I'm expecting thunderstorms here
humid and ozoney

its just cold and wet here

3:09 PM
what's a fully qualified path :)

In a file system, I'd take that to mean an absolute path, like C:\Users\Ben\Documents\myfile.txt as opposed to something like Documents\myfile.txt

okay ill use the term absolute path in my answer :D

sounds better to me
fully qualified is a term I just assoicate with dns :/
or doctors :D

Dumb question of the day - will it make HNQ?
1
Q: How to Create a PNG file from... nothing?

Code WhispererAs we know, all files are simply containers for data. PNG files are no exception to this rule. A PNG file basically just refers to a rectangular grid of colored pixels, so it can't be that complicated - certainly not as complicated as a video or even a GIF. My question is, how can you create a ...

If you rule out graphics editors, you could do it pretty quick with PowerShell

3:14 PM
@BenN Really? You should write an answer in case it goes HNQ :)

i have a weird thing happening in excel
i'm getting a weird second window that i can't get rid of or interact with
any suggestions? is it worth a punt on the main site?

I've read about that happening
I didn't stick around long enough to read the solution tho

Back to the reviewing/flagging game.
roar

I done all mah reviews :/

3:21 PM
@JourneymanGeek sorry was that aimmed at me?

Uhm would anyone like to critique my answer? I feel like I can improve on some how making it stand out what each part of my answer is, although I feel that using headers such as -Intro/Analysis- and -Solutions- would be excessive

@Burgi Omg, your excel is possessed and writing messages to you ...

3:33 PM
london is on shutdown

@Burgi Do you know what triggers it?
First thing to do: Disable Adobe Add-Ins. Regardless of the issue you're having ;D

@Burgi That's incorrect, San Diego's website is www.duckduckgo.com

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere what on earth are you talking about?

@Run5k they've effectively purloined a good few of my answers in the past and i assume they've done it for others. Not sure whether to be flattered or a flabbergasted tbh.
Can't really complain tho, what with the cc-by-sa licence.

3:50 PM

oh screw off someone down voted my answer without even saying what's wrong with it
wait burgi is that a multiple desktop configuration?

probably someone who reads root access doesnt like me and down voted my answer yeah? ;)

yeah its add-ins

@Burgi thanks for your input by the way

4:05 PM
Alright, lets see how good American Express' dispute resolution process is...

@TOWMN Exceptional, from what I hear

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere never attribute to malice that which can just as easily be explained by Tim Post loosing his keys

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere if you want rep ignore the 6yo questions...

@Burgi I dont want rep but I dont want to lose rep for answering the 6yo questions..
@Mokubai it was sarcasm

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere ditto

4:13 PM
If you are going to implement a goddamn OTP system at least ensure that it works.

oh no I dont think it's Tim who forgot his keys, it's you who forgot to drink a glass of water this morning!!!!!! @Mokubai HOW COULD YOU

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I'd remove the stuff about the 3rd party addon tbh

Honestly I completely forgot about how misleading his question title is from his actual question
I have a meta question
What to do when answering a 5 year old question with a title that doesn't quite match the question?

do we edit the title, or do we answer against the title (thinking that search engines have it indexed well by title?) idk I guess we edit the title?
@djsmiley2k true, it has little to do with the title of the question but the guy said his real question is how can other programs use this feature, well not everyone , actually only a handful will know how to make a powershell script to use the registry solution. so that third party program is a really good asset
let me virus total it, but Im sure it's safe
date: Fri Oct 5, 2007 at 3:00 AM lol

4:31 PM
Not saying it's not safe
saying that if it wasn't there, @Burgi's downvote is invalid :D
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere ask the meta question on meta
the problem with these 5 yr old questions is.... people 5 years ago sucked
so much should of been closed/migrated at the time

@djsmiley2k i didn't DV

@Burgi oh that wasn't you?
whoops
I did 2+2 and got the square root of 16.

I was going to then I had a really sharp feeling like I dont want to

nsfw question top of active questions
I imagine it'll be gone by now
wow still there
come on guys, faster faster

@djsmiley2k nope... someone lost their keys and I got a downvote

4:34 PM
srsly hwo is it still there..

now i mcurious

-5 and still not gone
are people dv'ing instead of flagging o_O

I dont see anything is it not a SU one xD

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Big boys drink coffee :P

4:51 PM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I didn't forget, I prefer coffee. Anyhoo, not guilty, if I didn't like your answer I'd have made sure you knew one way or another...

is there a programming se, or am i going mad?

Q: Does routing affect a socket with a bound source address?

Tor KlingbergLet's say I have two network interfaces: eth0 with address 10.0.0.1 eth1 with address 192.168.0.1 Using route or ip route add I have set it to route: All addresses to eth0 1.2.3.4 only to eth1 So packets to 1.2.3.4 should be routed to eth1, and everything else to eth0. I then create a UD...

this belongs there?

oh hohoh
@Rahul2001 pun intended, santa claus is a big boy he drinks hot chocolate
@Mokubai dont forget it's not Tim who downvoted the answer, it's a random person in the random world as a result of Tim's actions

With little marshmallows floating on top?

@Rahul2001 Real men drink Max strength Hot Lava Java :)

@Mokubai only if they dont contain chemicals

4:55 PM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere exactly, but you can blame Tim because he lost his keys. Or you can blame Trevor for cutting off Tim the night before, meaning that when Tim got home he was annoyed and not paying attention when he put his keys down.

@Mokubai yes and I was comparing your actions to Tim's :D

Or maybe it was Bridget who walked in front of Trevor's car causing him to swerve and cut off Tim, causing him to forget where he put his keys.

@djsmiley2k Should be on Stack Overflow I think.

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I have nothing whatsoever to do with the story.

hmmm
did you stop to tie your shoe laces?
did you smile and say hello to the person passing you this morning?

5:14 PM
Weird. I've just had a robocall from an Indian number (silence, followed by a "robotic" goodbye). The caller ID matches a Singer lyricist Actor

heh

lol random
but spoofing is easy
for various levels of easy

@djsmiley2k I know. It was most likely a tech support scammer. But I couldn't toy with them because the call dropped :/

yah

Normally they use rubbish numbers. This one just seemed strange that they used a real number belonging to a "famous" person.

5:24 PM
since when is anything normal

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Well things are normal in RA when you are not around! ;p

So. RA is normal when I am not around. That is one way to answer my question.

So it turns out a clean install of Windows breaks and needs reinstalling much quicker than a 5-times migrated Vista => Win 7 => Win 8.1 => Win 10 upgrade

are you saying vista might be as good as windows 10? if we assume it's possible that they are all = in the => expression

Really Facebook?

5:41 PM
And now I'm writing code by hand. Someone kill me

Like, on paper?

@Rahul2001 How else does one write code?
By paw? Using their nose?

@bertieb Yes
That's how I'm supposed to give my exams
@TOWMN but... on paper

How to compile paper?

@TOWMN Not sure how teachers check it for bugs either.

5:43 PM
Should you really be talking in RA during this written exam? :P

@bertieb Lol, exam isn't right now.
I'm just learning the stuff from the book
Also, Turbo C++
That thing is from a time when there were no standards

Turbo C++? Does the stripe make it compile faster?
(there's a RAID joke in there somewhere)

Hmm, Ass Effect Andromeda is a 45GB download

@Rahul2001 someone told me programmers write their programs on paper and then scan it to the computer in order to not spend excessive hours on the computer

I remember games on floppy disks!
He said, get-off-my-lawnfully

5:56 PM
I remember operating systems on floppy disks ...

Hm, I need a break from this world. I want an escape from all this *downloads complete Eminem album and listens to it all night*
Goodnight folks

n'night
I ate some Lidl sweet potato crisps with gingerbread flavouring, now my nose burns
Let this be a warning to the rest of you
(i know it's not terribly manly to complain, but it does feel as if someone has stuffed a hunk of ginger up each nostril)
On a related note, does milk work the same as for dealing with contact with chilies etc?
I'm not saying I'm going to go snort some milk if so
But enquiring minds want to know

4 people dead in London :/

Up to 4 now? :(
It was only 2 confirmed about 10 mins ago
Oh, the attacker died too?

> It is currently believed one attacker was involved, killing four people, including a policeman, and leaving at least 10 pedestrians and two other police officers seriously injured.
Yeah, the attacker is dead.
> A police officer has died after being stabbed outside the Houses of Parliament
Two other people have died and at least 20 others are injured after the attacker drove into them in a car on Westminster Bridge
The alleged assailant was shot and killed by armed police
Still not clear

6:11 PM
Hmm; they were just saying 'shot' on the news before- perhaps they subsequently died?
Terrible stuff though

It'll not be clear for awhile i think
@Rahul2001 I once wrote a till oftware, on the back of a reciept to try and show someone how you'd do something like that
and today it seems the s key of this keyboard doesn'talways work
1 year since brussels?

7:08 PM

Well I figured out why hibernate and resume weren't working...
EFI decided to start booting from my secondary drive instead of the OS drive when my SSD overheated
Course EFI being obnoxious EFI it hides all that from you and makes it impossible to switch manually
Had to delete the system and boot partitions off my second drive then reinstall the bootloader and firmware on the primary drive just to get the retarded EFI to let you select to boot from the primary drive.

7:43 PM
fun

7:53 PM
So apparently reverse proxies are easy... it's getting hold of port 80 with nginx that's the hard part :|

8:14 PM
huyzzar
replaced the element in the oven
it worked!
feels like this xD

That's a great ad.

yup
Also I could go for 'Tim replaced his oven heating element, and now he feels EPIC!'

Sweet, now can you replace the hinge in my oven so that it closes properly? :D

8:49 PM
Hmm... my script is will quite happily remove-psdrive but it doesn't seem to want to new-psdrive WHY???

9:00 PM
Okay, so it adds \\drive\one fine, but when it gets to \\drive\two it removes drive one and doesn't add drive two... o.o
