9:00 PM
Who am I? I stay up late at night wondering if there is a dog....

Be right back.

@DavidPostill Did I miss something?

@varfirstName Proxying through my server through a compressed SSH link to reduce data use.

@Mokubai Probably not. Something that happened a week ago. I'm sure you saw it on meta.se

Hmm, I need a new pet tag for a dog coller , they are usually engraved with the information needed to call the owner, and the engraving is not that easy to read.
I am wondering if instead i should use Dog Tags ?

Dog
9:02 PM
!!taytaytay

Ah, thank you

Dog
!!taytaywtf

Dog
That tay is missing a tay
Also that was not the command I was looking for

Dog
That's the one

I didn't get the Talkative badge yet.. :(

@varfirstName are you just here to get a badge or are you going to become a regular customer?
!! s/customer/victim/

@allquicatic @varfirstName are you just here to get a badge or are you going to become a regular victim? (source)

the latter lol

9:10 PM
@varfirstName And I'm tempted to remove your starred message ..... ;P

@DavidPostill mean! it was a funny pun

Then you will have to wait longer for the badge

David After Dentist becomes David After Sick... "Is this real life?"

Or is this just fantasy

It usually takes a while for chat stars to be synchronized to the main site for badges

9:12 PM
@allquicatic That would be funnier if my surname was Postdrill :)

Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality.

Open your eyes

Look up to the sky and see

I'm just a poor boy
I need no sympathy
cause I'm easy come, easy go;
little high, little low.
Anyway the wind blows

9:14 PM
Doesn't really matter to me --

To me.

I love SU

awww I love SU too

No, no, no, no, no, no, no

9:15 PM
Mama mia, mama mia

Biriyani and a Naan!

@Mokubai Anyway the wind blows

Nothing really matters
Nothing really matters... to meeee----

@Mokubai when my coworker transferred the other day, we all took him out to a great biryani place. I got spicy chana masala, naan and a fried piece of bread (!) whose name I forget now
chole bature
it was yummy

Ramhound is lurking :3

9:19 PM
lots of people lurk

do you lurk?

the least lurky non-lurkers in here are JourneymanGeek, Bob, and me (in no particular order)

@allquicatic Much indian food is nice. When we move to my current locale we found a place that makes a nice Chicken Methi

if we're in here we're probably typing
@Mokubai ever have dal bukhara? amazing. (but I only do vegetarian)
I also like paneer but it gives me horrible heartburn so I avoid it usually

I remember when I first joined SE
I joined SU earlier this year

9:20 PM
n00b

@allquicatic Don't think so, we don't get a great selection on this side of the pond

1m n07 4 n00b!
Do any of you guys do any gaming?

@varfirstName no, never. I just have a GTX 1080 so Chrome loads faster

lol
I bought No Man's Sky recently

actually, every Sunday at about 06:00 UTC (give or take), JourneymanGeek, Bob and I get together and play random games
!!tell 31841703 no

Out of no pressure from the Hypetrain's steam engine

@varfirstName Many of us play much gaming

Steam?

@varfirstName Steer clear of the hypetrain if you want to play good games

@varfirstName Yes

9:24 PM
@Mokubai I wasn't pressured by any hype train. I bought it on my own volition.

games we have played so far: Sword Coast Legends; Sins of a Solar Empire (LOTS, including with the Star Wars: Interregnum mod); Stellaris; PayDay 2; Ashes of the Singularity
@varfirstName hope you get your money's worth; I played it for 2 hours and got a refund... will be buying it in a few years for $5 from the humble bundle or so... it's a PoS imnsho

Dog
I don't play any of them :-(

imnsho?
I have Payday 2
Too hard

in my not so humble opinion ;)

9:26 PM
@varfirstName not if you have voice chat and the right equipment :)
also making sure not to take on heists that are above your pay grade so to speak (you can do more stuff the higher level you get)

@allquicatic and a good team

Payday 2 is awesome, just a pity about their "2GB update every other day" policy

I've got 80Mbps D/U
I used to have 30Mbps wifi, at best

@Mokubai it hasn't been that bad

Got upgraded to ethernet
took full advantage of what we pay for

9:29 PM
@varfirstName I'm clinging for dear life onto a rare truly-unlimited (uncapped) Verizon Wireless 4G LTE data plan and my primary Internet connection is a AC791L jetpack
they're trying to take away unlimited data plans from customers who are "excessive" users now... fuckers
it's around 12 Mbps during tower saturation, or more like 35 Mbps at 3 AM

have no viable landline option

That's pretty good for cell
@allquicatic approx. location?

@varfirstName the eastern seaboard of the US ;p

9:31 PM
"mid-Atlantic"

...close; but outside of nuke range from where I am

nuke range?

yeah. if you nuked NC I wouldn't die
well maybe with a Tsar Bomba I would

Actually, with modern nukes, you most likely wood
*would

9:32 PM
"modern" nukes are not all that high yield.
devastation in a city center and moderate radiation poisoning out into the suburbs

Dog
@varfirstName Pfft

How many Megatons of tnt was Tsar bomba?

@varfirstName designed for 100, but only ever tested at 50
modern thermonuclear arsenals of the superpowers that isn't rotting or been decommissioned is usually in the kiloton range

how do we even measure that?

with an extremely small number of megaton "deterrent" nukes

9:34 PM
@allquicatic measured around 58 iirc... Not sure if iirc tho

I'd be surprised if any nation has a nuke with >10 MT ready to launch right now
because honestly, even 1 MT is enough to be a nuclear deterrent

Dog
"Not bad for cell"

and many many 1 MT or kiloton warheads is more threatening and potentially more destructive than a small number of high MT warheads

Dog
That reminds me, I still need to find some place where I can hit >150Mbps

210 Petajoules

Dog
9:36 PM
MIRVs
They all MIRVs

anyway, I'm somewhere in the Baltimore-Washington metro area

Burbs of Baltimore?

I'm not getting any more specific than that

Do you mean viable as in cost-wise?

No.

9:38 PM
nvm
you're asking about my landline options
I mean viable in terms of throughput and reliability
ADSL = 3 to 7 Mbps down, 500Kbps - 1 Mbps up, $100+/month, drops out when it rains

no fiber solutions nearby?

100MT is nice though. Shiny fireball from ground level to the top of the atmosphere.

@Hennes It's also 420PJ

Cable = advertised 100 Mbps down / 7 - 15 Mbps up, but you get about 30% of that during congested times (most times when people want to watch TV online through Netflix, for example). For like $300/month. And capped at 250 GB per month or thereabouts. And drops out when it rains, when trucks drive down the street, and when the neighbor turns on their vacuum cleaner

The russians thought they could 420 blaze it

9:40 PM
oh, there's fiber nearby; in about 3 minutes I can walk from my house to fiber hanging from a telephone pole.
but Verizon cares not who wants fiber or how much they're willing to pay; they roll out fiber on their own schedule and according to their own idea of where customers are and who's buying, etc.

Dog
@allquicatic Indeed, our primary "deterrent" consists of ~0.5MT warheads, just crap tons of them

in 2007 a rep came TO OUR HOUSE and told us we'd be able to get FiOS in "weeks"
it's been a few hundred weeks since then and we're still waiting. Fuck them
meanwhile neighbors have had it for years

Dog
A single MIRV can carry up to fourteen 0.5MT warheads, which still gives you 7MT in total

they just randomly decided to skip our street or something

Then call Verizon and escalate!

9:41 PM
Holy crap, @Dog can math

there is apparently no way short of being a friend of a Senator or the CEO of Verizon to get them to roll out FiOS once they've decided to skip you

@bwDraco god yes.

@bwDraco done it several dozens of times
same old platitudes

Dog
@allquicatic I'm sure I've suggested this before but why not buddy up with some neighbour and build your own wireless/ethernet bridge?

"we can put in a request for you"
@Dog because I don't trust my neighbors and they're all hick luddites with 1970 Ford trucks anyway. they wouldn't know what fiber is
probably why my street got skipped

9:42 PM
Get as high up as you can go. If needed, contact the CEO, tell them you have cash in hand and are willing to pay for a bespoke Fios deployment.

@bwDraco unless it's 7 figs they wouldn't be interested; and I don't know the email of the CEO
also there's been a fuckton of utilities activity on our street and neighboring streets since about March, so maybe they're in the process of thinking about maybe possibly someday in the next 20 years rolling out FiOS
no indication from Verizon that it's in progress; it's a binary switch with them, either it's ready or they have "no plans" to roll out FiOS to you
they won't admit to you that they're in any kind of process to start it or whatever
it's the most opaque, most standoffish, most stonewalled process I've ever seen for delivering service to consumers
they're the worst company on Earth as far as I'm concerned and I'd be perfectly content to see the government break them up (again... see: Bell) or put them all out of work

Dog
> The Tsar Bomba was a three-stage bomb with Trutnev-Babaev[10] second and third stage design,[11] with a yield of 50 megatons.[12] This is equivalent to about 1,570 times the combined energy of the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki,[13]
10 times the combined energy of all the conventional explosives used in World War II,[14] one quarter of the estimated yield of the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, and 10% of the combined yield of all nuclear tests to date. A three-stage H-bomb uses a fission bomb primary to compress a thermonuclear secondary, as in most H-bombs, and then uses energy f
Damn russians.

most anti-consumer telecommunications company in the US at least, if not the world

@allquicatic I heard Google Fibre might be rolling out to the burbs of Baltimore

hahahahahahaha
wake me up when that happens

9:49 PM
@allquicatic you don't know anti-consumer until you meet BT in the UK.

Dog
Hah
I figured it was a common theme among all telcos

I guess Bob has a pretty bad one in AU too

I've heard of BT.

I like BT (Bluetooth)

9:51 PM
It's like call centre pokemon!

using Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear Wireless right now over BT

@varfirstName I'm told that they exist to provide telephone and broadband services, but I suspect their real business is keeping call centres running.
@allquicatic I should get a decent headset at some point, there are some cheapish noise cancelling jobbies on Amazon these days

Speaking of horrible customer service, it seems literally impossible to contact a human from Dropbox without being the admin of an Enterprise team

Dog
What makes you think there are humans at Dropbox?

They're there

Dog
9:55 PM
It's just a young budding Skynet vying for all your data
dog doge

They're just all watching the illicit porn that people upload
Speaking of which, there's a lady in my company that complained about a slow computer
we found 10 trojans on the computer

I hope your company has a convenient reimaging solution

yep
Symantec Ghost
I think, at least.

BBL

MDT is such a lifesaver for me. People broke their computer? No problem: shut down → netboot → type computer name → wait 90 minutes → fixed!

9:59 PM
Not sure; I'm in developement.
MDT?

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit

Ah
I'll recommend that to the guy we have on Helpdesk

Dog
@BenN 90 minutes?! o_0
I can install Windoof in less than 9 minutes

For the install image to be downloaded and applied

@Dog it has to rebuild the entire image on the machine

10:07 PM
Our network isn't super fast

Dog
Ah

@BenN What's bandwidth like?

Dog
Not super fast, evidently
Go 10GbE or go home! #10GbE

Theoretically 1Gbit, but a lot of the workstations are behind ancient unmanaged switches

So ~100Mbit?

10:10 PM
Yep

sucks
Well, I've got ~80Mbit WLAN so..

very big difference between the two

That's why we're planning to run Cat 6A through our new house.

Dog
10:29 PM
Well America isn't obsessed with planes at all

@Hennes Really? You modified a SU post from '13?

One?

> At Computex 2016, Marvell told us to expect consumer networking products with 10-gigabit speeds in January (CES time frame). 10GbE will finally fall out of the enterprise sector and into the laps of us at home and provide roughly 1GB/s of data transfer speeds over commodity CAT 6 cabling. A single 10GbE connection will only require a single PCIe lane with the 4.0 specification.

Dog
More like one hundred

@Hennes Jesus; how many did you modify?

10:32 PM
A few thousand?

today?

No, over the course of a year or more
Did you happen to read this post? meta.superuser.com/questions/8402/…
Lots of people slowly working on that.

oh
That's the edit you made
I see

Trying to also fix small details as we go.

Dog
@Hennes Hey I disagree with that

10:35 PM
Which os the thats do you disagree with?

Dog
A company or their products certainly can be an area of expertise, that's why companies have certification programs (e.g. MSCE, CCNP, RHCE) and why people list familiarity with SAP or Oracle or whatever on their CVs
@arda Thanks, when does the club close?

Only Oracle does not make printers, tablets, phone, laptops, harddisks, SSDs, .....
Oracle on its own a a bit more limited.

@Dog I don't want to answer that.
maybe in 2016 if giant meteor wins
@votegiantmeteor, Outer Space
Giant flaming meteor, extinction level event, 2016 presidential candidate, probably your best option. https://t.co/FAjr1s8bCD

@Hennes Cisco does make a lot of different things however, and someone with a CCIE might find it useful to go through cisco tags since, though they might not be an expert on every Cisco product they'll know a fair deal about most of them
Sure "Samsung" would be too vague, but IMO "company tags" aren't universally too broad.

10:41 PM
We got HP-laserjet, Asus-laptop, HP-proliant, HP-laptop, ....

Dog
In some cases, yes. "Microsoft" or "Samsung". But "Atheros" or "Cisco" or "Redhat" is quite useful
Or "Broadcomm" pukes

Feel free to comment on that on the meta post.
The general concensus seems to be Braiam's answer (at +27).
So I am following that.

Not that I do not have my own comment and opinions, but I mostly postponed them till this one got done

Dog
I'm fat

Dammit, not enough RAM to keep Firefox in the background when I switch apps!

Alright guys, bb;

Cooking.stackexchange.com has a meta side. We should totally call that feta.stackexchange.com :)

Unrelatedly, am I blind, or is /tools/post-feedback not linked anywhere in the 10K tools?

I stumbled across it while reading MSE and couldn't find any mention of it anywhere on any page accessible from the /tools dashboard
