@bwDraco meta is brutal lol

Q: Can we empty out [null]?

RaystafarianSeriously, I have no idea what null is for - null characters, null processes, errors, null strings, nil, nada, nothing, blank, empty? I really don't see the point of null when it's not specific enough to determine what is null. Maybe a retag is in order?

Just got ACIV Black Flag and most DLCs.

@bwDraco have you already played the other assasin creeds ?

Everything in mainline up to ACIII (currently on Sequence 11).
Got stuff to do so can't chat too much.

Q: I don't want to kill any more mice

Wetlab WalterWhen my supervisor pitched the PhD to me, it was all about analyzing "big data". I had BSc/MSc experience in wet-lab biology (mainly culturing cells), however I wanted to branch out into Bioinformatics since I am, and always have been, fairly good at programming in C, and data analysis in general...

Being asked to kill mice without being taught how to do so humanely. Yuck.
Worse yet, having to run grotesque experiments on these animals against your will.
HNQ asked 38 hours ago, got 7000+ hits and a score well above 100.
> I can think of several more, but it's not really suitable for here.
OP is being asked to do things that are NSFW. What the...?

@bwDraco the ahh wall is probably outdated.

Anyone wanna join ?
P.S: I am currently clueless :P

Bob
4:07 AM
@HackToHell Heh. You probably know more than me about that.
If you can't find anyone else... sure. But don't expect much :P

4:37 AM
@HackToHell uhhhh that kind of high stakes contest is just a waste of time for me
I like taking a defeatist attitude toward life
Probably richard stallman or some kid from MIT already beat you to it.
It's absolutely open. Anyone from any skill could go in, sweep the competition in an hour or so, and done.

Bob
@oldmud0 Tends to be an interesting way to learn, though.
As long as you aren't playing for the prize/recognition.

no, you might as well do codeforces given most contests prefer ACM style, aka boring contest style
I hate ACM style. It's destructive, I don't learn anything from it

4:58 AM
@oldmud0 There's absolutely no way to win
Not knowing as much as I know now
@Bob I called off the pursuit, I am reading a ML book now
I'm more clueless than I thought

Bob
5:18 AM
@oldmud0 Eh, I just view them as a way of finding interesting problems.
Usually can't be arsed about the actual submission.

5:45 AM
ugh
I have no idea what is going on
1tb hard drive works perfectly in a caddy
Not on the system it needs to work on
but other drives work fine on that system

@Bob yeah, I couldn't figure out how to model .-.
So I'm asking the guy who does that at work
:P

Bob
@JourneymanGeek peak power?

@Bob Maybe, though it worked at one point
shrug
It works in a USB drive caddy tho

Bob
@Boris_yo not worth it unless you really have rechargeable 9v, C, etc

5:57 AM
so it would be wierd

Bob
:/
Any jumpers on it?

I'm just sticking the hardly used hard drive I found in, doing an install
Not as far as I recall
I'll pop it out once my alternate drive is cleared out

6:15 AM
@Boris_yo what you recharging? Maha makes chargers that have a slight variation to the routine that treats batteries "better" amazon.com/Maha-MH-C808M-Ultimate-Professional-Batteries/dp/… got one like this, never failed for years.
amazon.com/… then for AA & AAA only and for super battery geekoids who would go through endless BS to charge, discharge , cycle , break-in, and get complete readouts and capability this one is bestest
Both of them would still have the problem the one reviewer said about Rejecting batteries that are no longer "good" which also means they wont cook bad batteries either.

Bob
6:39 AM
@Psycogeek heh. Maha's good. Lacrosse is cheaper and not too shabby ;)

Well, nickel-based chemistries can be tricky to charge properly. The best charge routine involves detecting that the cell voltage has dropped a tiny bit after increasing continuously under an input current.
This is called delta-V charging.
Detecting this tiny drop can be difficult, which can cause the charger to overcharge and damage the battery.
It's not like lithium-ion, where one could just apply a certain voltage (generally 4.2V a cell) with a current limit (e.g. 1A) and stop when the current drops below a certain point (e.g. 50 mA).

7:00 AM
problem is even nickle based could have used a li-ion charging routine of the same type, for the nickle voltage. li-ion was "new" and with it came what i deem a more proper charing method for anything .
New , new :-)
but the Faulter method for ni-?? is so engrained and trained and booked, and teached, that no one can even make one using a "new" method without "experts" rejecting it as bad.
there are 2-3 out there that do use that method though. they are also li-ion chargers , and so they just used the same alogrythm with the different voltage.
Maha (instead) just puts in a "voltage max" into a normal (old school) nickle charge routine, which stops painfull overcharges (most times) and then finishes up with a "topping charge" while most chargers are still reaching overcharge state, oxidising the battery and using that as a stop method.
The old school method is still completely valid, and doesnt destroy the batteries too badly, because manufactures of the battery have insured and tested knowing that the beat it till it faulters method is what is most likely to be used.

Right. Alternate drive works
Its 'old' but not really used so running a smart test to be sure

7:41 AM
@Psycogeek Almost $90... Pricy. My needs are AAA/AA NiMH recharging and I could use 9V batts too.
@Bob Is it not good for AAA/AA NiMHs?
LCD is a plus but I ma looking for one that unlike most would ensure longevity of batts giving love to each battery instead of using common recharging scheme that degrades battery lifetime.

1 hour later…
Bob
8:44 AM
@Boris_yo It is, but you're paying more for functionality you won't use
@Boris_yo at some point you're paying more for the charger than what you'd spend on replacing batteries
How many batteries do you recharge per month?
@bwDraco iirc delta-T is more reliable, but minus-delta-V is better when it works
@bwDraco CC/CV

Yup.

Bob
@bwDraco difference is, charging Ni incorrectly just reduces lifetime, or may cause minor venting. Charging Li incorrectly often results in fire and toxic smoke.

^^^ This.

Bob
I'd spend more on a Li charger because failure is far more dangerous

Bob

bLARG
Its amusing how often I run into the same issues

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm?

qbitorrent is borked on the current fedora release

Bob
o.O
Don't run bleeding edge? :P

also, if I get things working, I need to back up, and there's no solution I'm happy with
I'm updating all the things then trying
else downgrading the version

10:10 AM
@Bob I don't recharge consistently so I don't have average but if I expect I will be working with device requiring batteries like projector for several hours I will usually recharge between 4-8 batts that day.
@Psycogeek Is this too expensive for my wall? amazon.com/gp/product/B005NN8JOI
I do no have fish in my wall by the way.

Bob
@Boris_yo I've not seen a projector that takes NiMH...
I don't even use AA much anymore... I might recharge em maybe twice a month. At which point iot'll take me decades to go through the rated 500 or so cycles.

crl
10:53 AM
Is it better to unplug the battery charger of a laptop when he's turned off? to possibly save battery lifetime, or maybe it doesn't change anything

Pretty sure there's a question on the site about that...

crl
indeed, thanks

11:10 AM

@Bob now I'm pretty certain data disks arn't powering up unless I cold boot
So drives are fine. Machine might be acting up
joy. Install blew up
I blame canada btrfs?

11:29 AM
hm. And a anaconda bug that might have been reported two versions ago.

Bob
Does anyone remember the malwarebytes version with a different name (to trick malware that detects mbam)?
My Google-fu is failing me.
Oh, chameleon.

Bob
11:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek Always a good choice.
The blaming, not the using.

Yeah. Will try again.

lithium batteries will Blow up, that is soo cool, now where is my nuclear one :-) with all the fear, i have actually had more incidents with lead acid , ni-cd , and ni-mhy . As a kid I blew up a car battery in my face. Had a super explosion of a few china D cell ni-mhy . and a small fire from very high power ni-cad pack in the back of the van while driving down the road.
but as of yet, even after dealing with way more li-ion cells and lithium primary, no cool explosions yet, even from some pretty extreeme testing. Sure the fear helped to educate and control, but any high powered battery (or set) can short out , or charge badly and burn your house down.
The only difference with lithium is the contents of the battery itself can make fireworks.

12:11 PM
with Much Power comes great Responsibility , just like mods :-)
superuser.com/questions/1071768/… " I find it really hard to write a word between two other words, because I don't know on what side I should put the new space." Wow that is some serious problem :-)

I just discovered my home server has an option to turn off the power light <3
Now if I could just get it running reliably again ;)

Bob
o.O
@JourneymanGeek My option to turn off the power light is to unplug the molex to the LEDs :P

@Bob looks like its a new thing. My Dell monitor does it too.
done a reinstall with a 'normal' ext4 filesystem
hopefully that would be more stable

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I guess home media boxes are becoming more mainstream.

@Bob and that's essentially what the Xtrail nucs I use are good at
Also has QR codes supposedly pointing at help pages on their webpage in the bios

2:37 PM
@Bob Molex is starting to hurt my fingers when I unplug them [oooo]

Bob
@MatthewRummins Yea, it does.

Only molex connector I have in use is for my bias lighting ;p

@Bob Yep... It'll do that...
@JourneymanGeek :p

(and that's cause it was the easiest thing to jerryrig)

I need more sata power connectors on my power supply, but have not yet decided whether to buy new or wire the connectors myself...

Bob
2:47 PM
I just got a molex to SATA adapter. Works fine.

I'm actually probably going to end up downsizing the number of drives on my desktop.
(I got 3)

Bob
It's missing the 3.3v, technically, but my 3.5" HDDs don't need it

How do you stop Chrome from reloading all tabs after you recover previous sessions? I have 2 windows with 67 tabs and sudden reloading puts a burden on CPU...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...I've currently got 4 HDDs and 2 SSDs inside, and 4 HDDs outside, not counting portable...

@Bob yeah, I'm leaning towards a seperate, more powerful home server.
eventually
(or a cluster of cheap NUCs ;p)

2:52 PM
@Bob I tried molex to sata adapters but found they only worked about 50% of the time.
Probably a cheap brand.

Bob
@MatthewRummins Eh. Either you have a very weird drive requiring 3.3v, or you just bought crappy ones.
They've always worked for me.

@Bob I think they were probably crappy ones. But that leaves me with a few spare sata power connectors so might try using them to rewire the power supply.

@Bob I currently have a stack of <100 gb drives
and paired ._.

Bob
@MatthewRummins I'd recommend sticking with molex simply because it's removable.

Well no, 2 160gb drives, one 300. The old TB drive is in the drive caddy.

Bob
2:55 PM
Permanent mods are nasty. Especially when splicing high-current wires :\

@Bob ...I don't understand...
Oh I see
Yes, that was what was holding me back

Bob
I've had to swap out one already :P
(needed more sata power connectors, so swapped for a 4-way one)
Actually, no. The 4-way hangs off another sata connector.
Was a bit concerned about the peak load but it seems to cope.

I just hate spending money when I can do it myself. But I think this might be false economy :D

In this case, likely

2:58 PM
I had a 2-way adapter and it never worked. Out of 3 one way adapters only 2 worked.
oooo O.o

Bob
@MatthewRummins Eh, I could spend $10 or spend hours messing around and potentially fry a HDD.
...I took the $10 option.

I hear you.

Bob
Of course, entirely your choice. But that one worked for me.

I think the 2 way one I had before fried my backup drive so I kept away from them

Bob
3:00 PM
iirc startech is alright

But that was molex to sata, not sata to sata
Ha! You should get an amazon credit. I just added it to my basket :D

Bob
Ah... just noticed it's add-on.

AddOn item so now I need to buy more

Bob
I think I chucked it in with a SATA PCIe card at the time.
Ow, it's dropped by $2 since i bought it too.

No matter. I need a better usb key, this one is taking hours to run a 5Gb backup

Bob
3:03 PM
Wait. It wasn't add-on when I bought it.
wtf amazon

OMG it is still going. Never buying Verbatim again!

Bob
That reminds me. I need to get some of those little screws for PCIe backplates.

Dude, I have so many!

Bob
That was last August.
@MatthewRummins Yea, I could probably rip one out of an old machine... but I don't have any spare weirdly enough.
Might be cause I used two for the GPU? :P
And my case didn't come with any.

My case came with crappy plastic ones that broke almost instantly, so I knew what I was after when I came across old machines

3:08 PM
hey
i've noticed recently that a very high rep user is just answering with single line answers or link only answers that should really be comments. What should I do about those sorts of answers?

@Burgi erf. Treat em like any other user.
Comment and flag as appropriate.

rgr rgr

@Burgi I think you need to ask those questions in the chatroom nextdoor

there is another SU chatroom? ;)

Yes, it is one called something like 'ask an expert'. It is for problems just like that

3:14 PM
lol
@MatthewRummins we have a room for moderation issues
but in SU the community does most of the moderation

Yes, thats the one
Oh, I did not know that

There's mod mods
but quite a lot of it is through mechanisms like closevotes, flags (which we handle) and comments (for use of soft power)

I can see I have a lot to learn...
Lol!

@MatthewRummins i still make mistakes

@Burgi tbh, I'd like to hold high rep users to higher standards

3:19 PM
you would think so
annoyingly i can't let you know who i am concerned about without potential prejudice and the public naming

lol
Harry? ;p

yeah
<.< >.>

Yeah, he has had a few warnings about that.

Bob
The world of cold&flu tablets is a weird and wacky place O_O

and well
if he wasn't a 100K user, I think he'd have hit an answer ban

3:27 PM
his answers aren't technically wrong, they just need more detail

Well, at one point he was doing link only answers
so yeah. Treat it as any other user.

will do
the rep thing is a double edged sword

well, it is

Bob
> Dextromethorphan (DXM or DM) is a drug of the morphinan class with sedative, dissociative, and stimulant properties (at higher doses).

More so in my case ;p

Bob
3:30 PM
Wait. Sedative and stimulant?

I'm a very high rep user + a mod.

Bob, having a case of cold flu?

yes you know the advice you are getting is top notch but seeing that a super high rep user has answered might stop better more accurate answers from lower rep users

@Bob that's actually not that uncommon

Bob
@jokerdino Sinus issues. Bleh.

3:32 PM
@Burgi erm,

Bob
There's one that's got an amphetamine and an opiate in it.

anyway

I disagree in his cas
In fact, I encourage people to snipe bounties from him, by posting better answers

heh
i was talking in general

he only answers bounty questions
and he doesnt do votes

3:34 PM
Yup
(and just to say, all this has been said on meta, though on possibly deleted posts)

@Bob And if you use the Dex for more than a few days in a row, you need to take a shot of liquor every day to prevent damage to your organs.
If you take too much I think

@Burgi I find old/bad posts embarassing and fix em.

CandiedOrangeIn chrome you can type in chrome://settings/cookies and see a searchable list of all set cookies in the browser. @Burgi that's one of his better answers

i feel sort of bad that all this is getting talked about in public now

Bob
3:37 PM
@MatthewRummins Uhm.

i was trying to be discrete

@Burgi we can change the topic
lol
The fact that I guessed...
we're aware of the issue

good stuff

Bob
Apparently that's well over 1 mg/kg

3:38 PM
thats all i wanted to know

Bob
This thing has... 10mg per pill. Two pills per dose.

@Bob I saw it on Doctor House. A guy who was a genius used it because it made him less smart. But he had to drink each day to protect himself.

Bob
I weigh well over 20kg.
proooooobably not an issue

Bob
Also you'd think they'd mention on the packaging if recommended dosage could kill you -_-
@JourneymanGeek I'm trying to! :P

3:40 PM
;p

I think it is long exposure as well. When I have a cold I drink the medicine from the bottle and ignore the dosage (don't try this at home)

Bob
Drink? ugh.

Bob
Having to measure out a dosage, plus the taste... shudder
I'll stick with the capsules :P

Bob
3:42 PM
(I just realised I've called these tablets, pills and capsules within the same conversation... guess they're technically capsules.)

I tend to take this.

that name is familiar

Also, OTC antihistamines.
Can't remember what its called
@jokerdino Its the 'standard' thing for fevers in singapore ;p
Well the tablets

is that paracetamol?

Hey guys, can you have a look at this question. I am having a problem with a batch file and logically it should not happen...
0
Q: Using CALL command in .bat causes initial .bat file to close. How do I stop this?

Matthew RumminsThis must be a simple question... I have searched thoroughly for a solution to this and, while many Q&A threads deal with this issue, I am unable to find a coherent answer anywhere. The problem is simple: I want to use call to call up a batch file from within another batch file. Every time I d...

Bob
3:44 PM
Yea, Panadol is usually paracetamol.
Some Panadol variants have other things added.
I just bulk-buy paracetamol. Something like $1.50 for 100x 500mg... lasts forever

every paracetamol I know has a blueish wrapper. Like crocin, dolo, etc

@Bob expiry date?

I'm allergic to paracetamol. Have to use Ibuprofen :/

Bob
I say "bulk buy" but they're literally available at every chemist. chemistwarehouse.com.au/Buy/6988/…
@MatthewRummins Ow. I find Ibuprofen doesn't really work for me :\
Only tried it twice.
@jokerdino ~2 years, but expiry doesn't mean much for parcetamol

3:46 PM
Me either much, but it is cheap and does not make my throat close up ;)

Bob
(it says prescription... weird. they're on the shelves in-store)

@Bob Probably prescription in the place it is manufactured

For a cheap SG$5, I get 2 days of MC.

Bob
@MatthewRummins Same shop.

So, I dont really buy them without doctor's.

3:47 PM
lol

Bob
Oh. I think this is actually pharmacist's only.
Schedule 3?

Hmmm...

india kinda has very lax regulations on stuff like that

Bob
Nope. Shedule 2. Pharmacy only.
> Simple analgesics such as aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen in packs containing more than 24 tablets (packs containing up to 24 tablets of simple analgesics are unscheduled, and can be sold in any shop)

My dad tends to pick up his prescription in india cause its cheaper

Bob
3:49 PM
@JourneymanGeek I ended up with some Paracetamol/Phenylephrine/Dextromethorphan mix (Codral, Dimetapp, etc.). It works for coughs, but not so much for sinus issues :\

its £9 per perscription item here in the UK

@Burgi Is it per item now? That is new.

Bob
Pseudoephedrine is harder to get cause apparently it's a common precursor to meth... ugh.
It's supposed to be really effective as a decongestant too :\

@MatthewRummins it always has been... it costs me a fortune with my skin

Bob
@Burgi Oh, fixed price for everything?

3:51 PM
@Bob I THINK actifed contains that
remember the time I posted high as a kite? ;p

I missed that

yeah but stuff like paracetamol is not licensed so you can buy it cheaper than the NHS price
21 pence in supermarkets iirc

@Burgi Really? I'm sure I used to pay a flat rate no matter how many items were on the prescription. I am in London.

@jokerdino superuser.com/a/269324/10165 I posted this when I was sick with the flu. Woke up, posted an answer. Went back to sleep...

3:53 PM
But that was when I was a student...

then woke up and was like "whaaaaat? I posted that?"

yeah students is different
you should have got it free

People seemed to like it tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not particularly? :P

> NHS prescription charge in England will increase by 20 pence from £7.85 to £8.05 for each quantity of a drug or appliance from 1 April 2014.

Bob
3:53 PM
I've never really experienced anything noticeably mind-altering.
Been rather conservative with alcohol so far :P

@Bob iI'm a lightweight.

any deleted? I cant see them.

@Burgi Yes, I see. I think it must have been different at some point tho cos I remember paying a flat rate. Shows my age I think...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Codral Original does too. Ended up picking up a pack today. Though I'm feeling a tad better now so I'll hold off on it at least till tomorrow.

I was a student 10 years ago.

3:55 PM
Ah, I just read the answer, again.

@jokerdino no?

I even seem to have edited it a bit.

brb need tea

@Burgi how much?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Huh. I think that was before I was active in chat :P

3:56 PM
ahh ;p

Bob
2011. That was before I was an SU user!

yeah, it was before the time you and me joined :P

Bob
@Burgi That's pretty simple. Ours is... complicated.

I doubt we have anything like that.

Bob
Currently max cost (to patient) of $38.30 though.
Or $6.20 for concession holders (incl. low-income).
