tylerl Canonical question regarding the recently disclosed padding oracle vulnerability in SSL v3. Other identical or significantly similar questions should be closed as a duplicate of this one. What is the POODLE vulnerability? I use [product/browser]. Am I affected? Is [product] vulnerable to t...

Bob
@Psycogeek SSL 1.1 was just about never used. SSL 2.0 was considered insecure about two decades ago.

You want things newer than TLS 1

Bob
SSL 3.0 is definitely insecure now.
TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are supported out of necessity but not particularly great - many vulns that require workarounds.

12:02 AM
And therin lies my problem, of course they were all insecure and malable , the day they came out with them. that is why they are called secure :-) But say none of them are set in the options to use, will everything still work?

Bob
TLS 1.2 is the current gold standard.

Every serious web server should support modern crypto

@Bob ok definate, that helps

Bob
@Psycogeek SSL has nothing to do with ping (ICMP) failures.

And if you find a web site that doesn't support at least TLS 1.1, complain loudly to them
@Bob Right, ICMP is completely unrelated to SSL; it's at an entirely different layer of networking
You could conceivably deliver SSL'd data in an ICMP packet, but I can't think of an actual use case for that

12:08 AM
Ok thanks for that. It just went all off last night, and now i can be assured that doesnt change anything that matters. Even if most of anything I Do on the web doesnt require big security.
setting up this "new" computer, i spend rediculous hours adjusting all the options that not only do i have a poor understanding of, but going on the web for the information is Horrid :-)
Stupid Web pages in plenty that will say things like:
"Adaptive Inter-Frame Spacing" is an option that changes the Inter-Frame Spacing on packets that are sent , switching it to enabled, enables Adaptive Inter-Frame Spacing , switching it to disable . . .
Yea ok but WHEN should it be or not be?
Then you realise They just Dont Know
and instead say "Its time like this when you leave it on default"

<doesn't know anything about that feature, just Googling>
You might have seen that already though

Intel Networking Blog (YAY!) , has singular proper full explains, of One Item, in One blog each.
500,000 blogs out there, and just 1 with full explains of (just) the ethernet options, in one page , would be beutifull. but the computer generated Crap out there would reign over it still.

12:27 AM
For each item in the Ethernet adapter properties
Ask about the item on SU or SF
 Condense the answer
Add that information to a web page
End for
Publish web page

Asking for (all) 15 of them, will just shut the question down. I was thinking of saying i will provide 600 bounty total for the whole list if you do it all in one page. with complete explainantions for each.

I was thinking about asking one question per item, slowly :)

right which is right back where i started

Ah

locating them all via One search.
Canical really

12:30 AM
Doesn't have them all, and isn't super thorough, but a start

yea now thats much better
so much of this stuff they invented , jumbo packets (oooooh) but everything comes with it disabled. I just Happen to know they wont work well through my old crusty switch any better. But use scenarios are so helpfull.
Why did you make this . . . then turn it off :-)
in 2025 this will all be working as it should, then obsolete.

12:55 AM
For Macbook Retina users, how do you clean your screen?

So I'm guessing wet cloth won't damage the screen, right?

as usual i think these manufactures have no idea the layers of crap one can get on thier products . Generally speaking most light weight cleaning can be done with damp cloth and tiny ammounts of detergent. then insuring that no liquids move below the frames/bezels.
Microfiber cloths are recommended (by me too) because (good ones) dont drop lint, and have tiny upright fibers that get in places. But certian ones can be more abrasive. The microfiber rags designed for bathroom cleaning can be plastic harsh. the "polishing" microfiber is best, the fibers finest of all.
If you have snot and sneeze on things , "rehydrating" the proteins by having the liquid stay for some time , without it moving under the frames. Aka leaving the damp cloth on for a few minutes.
If it is road films , smoke, resins, kitchen greace, that is a whole world of different, and (here) requires measures that are beyond manufactures intentions.
Anything with a "coating" is impossible . oily coatings are used on some stuff, and the oleophobic coatings really should never have been used on some things, because they (so far) can be made completely permenent. those 2 are ruined by anything other than distilled water and light clothing. Just fresking impossible all the way around. One cannot "remove" oily fingerprints and oily crap without removing the properties that make these coatings special.
Distilled water can help big time for finishing anything, because of the lack of particulates in the water.

BurgiI wasn't going to post an answer but I felt I should point out some of the issues with your proposal. Firstly, removing the optical drive on a MacBook will leave the slot open on the side of the casing. This would allow dirt, dust and other potentially disruptive foreign objects access to the mo...

2:59 AM
@Burgi tis true they have much of that stuff worked out, but your concerns would have a person doing some much better research on the replacement factor before acting, measuring and fitting, and checking for proper kits. this is a good thing.

Trying to help my dad uninstall a stupid program from his W10 computer, we're in "programs and features" (in the control panel) he selected the program, clicked uninstall, and it is asking "do you want to allow this application to update software on your PC?" Do I say yes or no?

click yes

ugh, "unexpected error..."

3:28 AM
if you don't the unistall wizard won't have the correct access to modify the registry and items in the program files folder

Should he be running control panel with admin rights?

no but it can't hurt
you might also want to check the event viewer for more information on the "unexpected error"

It's this stupid program: slimcleaner.com/uninstall.php

have you checked that it isn't still running?

I had him check the sysinternals process explorer for it, running with admin, to kill it.
he found another one in it.

are you doing this remotely over the phone or something?

I tried to set up RDP, but gave up since we're running out of time.

it might be easier for you to use something like teamviewer

no time, we've got to call it a night.

fair enough
i was going to say he could set that running and you could remotely keep working on it

He's going to try restarting.

heh
i use it all the time with my parents and far flung friends
they just fire it up, give me the code then leave me to fix it

@Burgi worth mentioning hotswap bays.

@JourneymanGeek it was macbook, they don't lend themselves too well to hotswappable drives
@AaronHall is it a trust issue meaning you'd run it in a VM or something?

Why not? better safe than sorry, right?
good night, thanks for the moral support!

Q: Enable/Disable Windows 2 Step logon verification from the command line

CarbonIs it possible to Enable/Disable Windows 2 Step logon verification from the command line.

thats odd, right?

i been struggling with about 70 windows 7 bugs for 7 years , nobody even knows they exist :-)
@Bob i didnt mean to interrupt, you are going to tell us about this win10 bug?
Just hacked another program that thought it could go on the web. Why would anyone want thier program to check the web every run of it (not daily or weekly), for "updates" . just little people , if thier program got 1 million people using it, and running it 15 times a day, how does thier (now not even exisiting) little home network handle that.
Some poor sap at that IP (not domain) it getting assaulted with requests that will never be fufilled.
"why are people DDOSing me" :-) As that programmer.

I have an old crusty browser that you can disable per tab, it is (pretty much) the only reason I wont discontinue it.
The Key thing here is not to Have To freaking filter everyone, and manually piddle over everything. but to have eveything locked down, and "releace" the dogs only in know trusted locations, and only as nessisary to do what the user desires at that moment.
While that requires a button press for every time i wish to releace, there is no way to put everything in zones.

its 6am, i'm finally sleepy

My hosts file is hundreds of thousands of sites, and kill bits and restricted sites (spyware blaster) another 17k. and the list of evil web keeps growing.
there must be a way to walk on the web without getting stuck, And activate mucho feature items at will too.
like chome if they are going to have a seperate ram sucking process for every web tab, why they cant put a set of 4-6 instant push buttons on it, for (my opinion of) real security and control.

yesterday, by bwDraco
Just got ACIV Black Flag and most DLCs.
...and AC4 is CPU-bound on this machine :(
(Laptops are more likely to suffer from this than desktops as slower CPU clocks are more likely to be a problem than slower GPU clocks.)
PhysX has a profound impact on frame rates, while geometry detail and other settings have little effect. I doubt a GPU overclock will increase frame rates dramatically.
Got stuff to do, so can't chat much.
The AC4 companion app for tablets is useful but not essential.
Community consensus is that AC4 is poorly optimized for PC. Frame rates are highly dependent on CPU sequential (single-threaded) performance.
AC3 is much better behaved than this on my machine.

6:35 AM
Okay. just went to the NVIDIA control panel. Triple buffering is off, which may be hurting performance, so I've turned it on. Will try again, but not much time for games.
...yup. Frame rate went up slightly, but the big improvement is that there's much less frame time variance (so less stutter).

@Bob Which one?

6:50 AM
@bwDraco cpu bound , so wouldnt that mean even if you turn down the GPU options like AA AF or even reduced the render resolution, that it would still be limited by the cpu?

Huh. So I can set the map marker through the companion app.
@Psycogeek yup.
(hold where you want the map marker in the app and it will show up in-game)

Q: DiskToVhd generated VHD is not bootable

DeveloperI had windows 10 laptop, I used disk2VHD to convert disk into VHD. Now I am trying to mount it to virtual box on another machine, but it seems be not booting. I used windows 10 ISO and through CMD I think non of my partition has property bootdisk = yes. Please guide, how can I convert this VHD ...

Guys guys.
We've talked about this.

7:18 AM
Honestly, there is not 1 right article there, I don't understand why vhd created by disk2vhd works for everyone but me
I have followed this article
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/jonjor/2011/10/04/vm-does-not-boot-following-p2v-or-disk2vhd/

but I am stuck there too

@Developer i have availble reputation to put a bounty on your question if it would somehow help

that would be awesome, but I am not sure how to say thank you to that though, other then just saying thank you :)

@Developer your question would have to have all possible information in it First, otherwise it might just go into oblivion.
you got lotsa pics, but is all the information you could relay as to what happened to you in the question?

yes, basically my generated vhd is not bootable, so I tried msdn's article to fix it, but that fails to at 1 point, then at end I added my main system's configuration as requested in the comments

@Developer any questions you answered in the comments, move to the original question. any things you tried, explain in the question itself what you tried and what the error results were.

7:26 AM
@Psycogeek Sure, going to do that now, thanks again

@JourneymanGeek yeah :)

erf. Trying to look up documentation, and their documentation is down.

@Developer to me it just looks like you need to learn how the BCD junk works, and edit it manually, but i no nothing about VMs and even less about VHD.

(ovirt. Want to try a new vm setup when I get my linus box back up)

7:41 AM
Can someone explain how the Windows BCD works?
(Too broad for the main site.)

@bwDraco I was following str8 forward tutorials though, but going to read about bcd now

9:40 AM
@Caterina'Catty'McCatface @Psycogeek It seems to have disappeared something like the 10th time into restoring the same backup :\
Basically, I was trying to set my default browser.
To Firefox, Edge, IE, whatever.
It wouldn't stick.
Protocol-specific settings showed that http was set fine but https was not...
If I reset to MS defaults then both are set to Edge but again https is stuck.
Can't even set it to IE.
course it's a pain in the arse to google for cause everyone's complaining about win10 default programs in general
Eventually discovered through profile mutilation/elimination and backup restore that it was some problem with my HKCR, UsrClasses.dat.
Problem was trying to isolate it. Didn't want to delete the whole thing cause that would've broken some COM links.
I ended up staying up all night restoring from backups and deleting bits and pieces from another account. And spent a couple hours scrolling through procmon output looking for anything suspicious.
Ugh.
The whole thing was discovered after uninstalling Fx x86 and installing the x64 version... spent an hour or two on a wild goose chase looking at Fx before trying a different windows account and realising that worked
bloody win10 and it's stupidly convoluted default programs system
ugh.

i should clarify that i run mcafee AV
my friend is explaining the problems he is having updating his local version php

@djsmiley2k Wait, they pay you extra on your days off?

@ThatBrazilianGuy bank holidays are national holidays

1:01 PM
My question still stands

they are days that do not come off your annual allocation so being made to work them means most companies offer an incentive
for example time and half or double pay

Does that mean @djsmiley2k is currently at work, during a national holiday, without any extra pay?
How's that not even blatantly illegal?

it certainly sounds like it

Ell
does to me too

1:06 PM
depends on his contract

Ha! Here it's a pretty solid case for suing, regardless of any contact

Public holidays in the United Kingdom, commonly referred to as bank holidays, are days where most businesses and non - essential services are closed although an increasing number of retail businesses (especially the larger ones) do open on some of the public holidays. There are restrictions on trading on Sundays and Christmas Day. == Common Holidays == Four public holidays are common to all countries of the United Kingdom. These are: New Year's Day, the first Monday in May, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Some banks open on some bank holidays. == Regional variations == In Scotland, while New Year...

IIRC, any work after 10pm or on holidays gets double pay, no exceptions

> Although there is no statutory right for workers to take paid leave on public holidays, where paid leave is given (either because the business is closed or for other reasons), the public holiday can count towards the minimum statutory holiday entitlement.
in the crazy world of being british i guess that means we only get the days off due to consensus :)

Saw this sign today

1:14 PM
I think part of it could be due to our salaries being monthly based. I get paid the same on a 28 day or a 31-day month

Ell
@JourneymanGeek interesting

@JourneymanGeek Not "a" cow. The cow.

@ThatBrazilianGuy the cow

And "Likewise, if people are required to work on a public holiday, there is no statutory right to an enhanced pay rate nor to a day off in lieu, although many employers do give either or both. Any rights in this respect depend on the person's contract of employment. The statutory minimum holidays are currently 5.6 weeks a year (including any bank holidays or public holidays that are taken)."

@JourneymanGeek they either have a single cow, or one of their cows is pretty badass
I'm no mere cow, bitch! I am THE cow!

As it is located just 100 metres from the mainland at its closest point, it will be reclaimed to build quality waterfront housing and linked via a bridge to mainland Punggol. @Burgi Visa Electron is a Debit Card
Visa Electron is a debit card available across most of the world, with the exception of Canada, Australia, Ireland and the United States. The card was introduced by Visa in 1985 and is a sister card to the Visa Debit card. The difference between Visa Electron and Visa Debit is that payments with Visa Electron require that all the funds be available at the time of transfer, i.e., Visa Electron card accounts may not normally be overdrawn. Visa Debit cards, on the other hand, typically allow transfers exceeding available funds up to a certain limit. Some online stores and all offline terminals (like...

you guys want to hear a funny IT story?

@allquixotic Go for it ;)

New (by all accounts expensive) laptops for entire Large Enterprise.
The big roll-out has two fatal problems:
1. Windows 7 32-bit + 8 GiB of RAM + 1 GiB of UMA VRAM for the GPU = 2.95 GiB of usable physical RAM. !!no.
2. Everyone got an RF mouse standard with the kit. They interfere with each other.

does it involve you stopping @DavidPostill from being columbo? ;)
LOL
name and shame the manufacturer!

2:08 PM
genius!

to HP's defense, the choice of 32-bit windows is not their choice, that is Large Enterprise's own IT's choice

the RF mouse thing though... i just have an image of a large office full of people fighting their mice

a lot of us resorted to either the TrackPad or TrackPoint on the laptop itself, or scrounged up old corded mice
there are so few people using the RF mice now that they pretty much work
it's a self limiting problem... as people give up on using them, the remaining few can actually use them without interference

but the ram/OS issue... thats like having a lamborghini then getting it pulled around by a horse

yeah lol

@Burgi Mhh, life without cat memes. Inconceivable times.

@allquixotic 32 bit OSes are painfully common
