I've been around since 09

@jokerdino just 1 large mug :)

Really?

roll on 6pm...
#sundaydriving...

Ok, that's it. I'm making curry.

if anyone spoils the result for me i will not be happy

Bob
4:03 PM
Ooh, nice.
But you're making me hungry at 2am :P
@Burgi Result?

F1 in sochi

Lol! It is 5pm here

@MatthewRummins i'll use @Bob's own quote on him
Apr 27 at 16:44, by Bob
@Burgi 'tis a silly place
afk, portal

Bob
Huh. Did a mysterious portal appear? Should I send a companion cube after you?

@MatthewRummins I just tried that batch file and it worked just fine. Make sure that admintools.bat doesn't have any "goto :EOF"s...

4:12 PM
@RahulBasu Yes, it seems to work for everyone except me. Hang on, I'm gonna check the Admin file again. I do not think it has anything that should cause this. What should I look for?

goto :EOF
or
exit

I have goto end. Would that do it?
but end is just another marker point in the program. I will try changing the name of it.

Bob
Wait, what's @MatthewRummins's problem? :P

0
Q: Using CALL command in .bat causes initial .bat file to close. How do I stop this?

Matthew RumminsThis must be a simple question... I have searched thoroughly for a solution to this and, while many Q&A threads deal with this issue, I am unable to find a coherent answer anywhere. The problem is simple: I want to use call to call up a batch file from within another batch file. Every time I d...

Bob
And you can't share the problematic file?
Usual troubleshooting would be to delete sections until it stops happening...

4:18 PM
@MatthewRummins Please add the contents of Admin Tool.bat to the question.

@DavidPostill Ok. I'll do it now.
@DavidPostill Done
afk, the kitchen is calling
It used to end with :end but I removed that to see if it made the problem stop

HAMMERTIME!

Bob
4:34 PM
Ok nevermind I'm not braining well at 2:30 am
4

@Bob you shouldn't have deleted those messages, you were right.
@MatthewRummins make sure there aren't any invalid labels.
:end is invalid and is probably causing the errors.

Bob
@RahulBasu Nah I think he meant he had a proper end label
@MatthewRummins WorksForMe (with echo prepended to the shutdown commands, an :end label at the end, and changing the goto back to goto end)
Can you also share the caller script?

@MatthewRummins No repro with or without without :end
@Bob +1

@DavidPostill I'm not sure what you mean...
@Bob Yes, I can share the caller script but it is very long... Do you still want it?

Bob
@MatthewRummins Well, it's the only way we can proceed further. Everything else is just guessing.
I might go to sleep soon though. I'm sure @DavidPostill can figure it out :P

4:43 PM
Do you think it is the inclusion of the shutdown commands that makes it close?
Ok, here comes the caller script

Bob
He'll probably get it before me anyway.

@MatthewRummins I tried with just end at the end instead of :end
@MatthewRummins Are you sure you don't have another Admin Tools.bat in your path?

Hang on, there is a Exit in the caller script. Could that be the problem?

@MatthewRummins Probably

Hang on

Bob
4:45 PM
@MatthewRummins Depends where it is.
This is why SF has a general policy of no script debugging without the full source :P
(Just general future advice - for now, just post the caller if you can)

No, still have the same problem without the exit. I will upload the full script.
@Bob Soz, I will remember in future

Bob
I mean, there's the chance that having the source won't help. But it's better than blind guessing.

@Bob +10

@MatthewRummins The first thing I do is rem out all @Echo off statements ...

<just burst in> Wait, are you calling a batch file from another batch file?

4:48 PM
@BenN lol yes

@BenN Yes

Do you call it or just say its name?
If you don't call it, the default invocation mode is "chain", which transfers control to the new batch file and then stops both when the callee finishes

Huh

@MatthewRummins pastebin.com

4:52 PM
@MatthewRummins You have Call "Admin Tool.bat" and then you give us Admin Shutdown Tool.bat. Do you have Admin Tool.bat floating around as well?

Bob
@RahulBasu gist.github.com is better :P

agreed.

Is the MAT in the last line supposed to say MAST?

Bob
@BenN That wouldn't matter... the echo isn't happening according to the question.

@BenN Doesn't affect the issue AFAIK

4:53 PM
Right, just something I noticed

Bob
@MatthewRummins If you're redacting anything before sharing the scripts, make sure the issue still occurs with the scripts you give us.

1 min ago, by DavidPostill
@MatthewRummins You have Call "Admin Tool.bat" and then you give us Admin Shutdown Tool.bat. Do you have Admin Tool.bat floating around as well?

@BenN Yes, MAST

<wild guessing> What happens if you supply the short (8.3) name to call?

@BenN Everything so far is wild guessing until we get two complete files that the OP is actually using ...

4:56 PM
@DavidPostill No, I just wanted to demonstrate the problem initially so I called it "Admin Tool.bat". I was not sure how uploading both files would come across as I am a new user.
@Bob I will. The only things that have been redacted are things I have been experimenting with removing. So what you are seeing is what I am working with.

Bob
@MatthewRummins Just chuck it on a gist or a pastebin and link them in chat.

@DavidPostill I will remember to delete @echo lines when debugging in future.

@MatthewRummins We need the two actual files you are using that gives you the problem. As they are right now. No more changes.

Bob
Ther's a good chance that there's just some silly little mistake that'll make the question redundant :P

Probably want to remove the cls lines too

4:59 PM
@DavidPostill What you have is what I have. No difference.

@MatthewRummins sscce.org
^^Important read.

@RahulBasu Yes, that is what I originally tried to do. I only posted the whole script in response to requests from users

Bob
@RahulBasu At this point we're not even asking for an SSCCE.

@BenN And the very annoying color a ;)

lol

Bob
5:00 PM
@MatthewRummins The point of an SSCCE is that it still reproduces the error. What you originally posted was short, yes, but didn't reproduce the error, making it kinda useless...

You should have the files now

Bob
You could go through the effort of making a proper SSCCE. Or just post the whole files because we specifically asked for it in this case :P
In the future, a tested broken SSCCE would be good.

It did reproduce the error for me.
I think cos the error is in the called file, not the caller
Should have sent the called file instead, but did not realise that is where the error was.
But I will try my hardest to use SSCCEs in the future

Bob
btw, you might find choice useful
iirc you won't have to implement your own read loop, it'll keep retrying until it gets valid input

If "%m%"=="9" goto UNINSTALLALL
IF "%m%"=="0" goto CLOSE
these labels don't exist

5:04 PM
@Bob Yes, I was thinking of using CHOICE but thought it would be nice to give users (myself) a chance to change their minds

@MatthewRummins FYI, choice doesn't work on XP.

@RahulBasu Good to know

Bob
I make it a policy to not support XP unless explicitly required.

@RahulBasu Is it a problem that the lables do not exist? I deleted them hours ago when I first started debugging the script.
@Bob XP is an emoji now

If you deleted the labels, delete the options from the menu too

5:06 PM
IIRC missing labels won't matter unless you actually choose the thing that would jump to them, but it's worth investigating

no point keeping half-baked code

Bob
@RahulBasu seems to be a wip

Maybe I'm missing something, but how does the callee script here exit?
It looks like it always goes back to its :top

It happens the same with a massively reduced code for the caller file, virtually the same as the one I originally posted. I do not think the problem is in the caller file. It has to be the called file.

5:09 PM
:29375388
"I have changed the goto end command at If %v%==5 goto top to see if this helped, but still having the same problem..."

@BenN It originally ended with :end but the first thread I read advised to delete this. I deleted it but got the same problem.

Oh whoops, missed that :) I just woke up, heh

@MatthewRummins What is the output of which "Admin Shutdown Tool.bat"

@MatthewRummins also try to not keep similar labels. Leads to a lot of issues.

Does goto :EOF help?

Bob
5:10 PM
33 mins ago, by Bob
@MatthewRummins WorksForMe (with echo prepended to the shutdown commands, an :end label at the end, and changing the goto back to goto end)
So, ya, it still works.

Oh wait, only if command extensions are on

@BenN I read that would cause the problem.

Perhaps exit /B is what you want?

Bob
@BenN Command extensions are always on by default in modern Windows.

Ah, neat

5:12 PM
@Bob Yes, it works but only if we completely change the program. So the problem MUST be in the called file.

Still no repro. I'm guessing there is more than one Admin Shutdown Tool.bat
2 mins ago, by DavidPostill
@MatthewRummins What is the output of which "Admin Shutdown Tool.bat"
@MatthewRummins

Bob
@MatthewRummins I've made no changes except the ones I've listed.

@DavidPostill He calls it by absolute path though

Bob
The listed changes are exactly what you said you did.
@Echo off
Title Admin Shutdown
color a
:top
cls
Echo.
Echo ----------------------------------------------------------------
Echo Warning! This program will shut down your computer!
Echo.
Echo Make sure you have saved any work before continuing.
Echo ----------------------------------------------------------------
Pause
Echo.
Echo Press 1 to close all programs and RESTART computer.
Echo Press 2 to restart and automatically restart running programs.
Echo Press 3 to close all programs and SHUTDOWN computer.
@MatthewRummins Also FYI because your color 1A in the caller is before the :MAT, even after exiting the callee you're still in the color a scheme.
So you still have green on black even though you're back on the caller.

@Bob No, I never tried putting echo before shutdown. Sorry if I am not making myself clear.

5:14 PM
@BenN True, but every time he runs the test he's copying it from somewhere else

Bob
Also note that you'll never see the Echo Starting . . . . . because you're immediately jumping up to :MAT folowed by a cls

@DavidPostill Sorry, do you mean you are unable to reproduce the problem?

Bob

@MatthewRummins How do you exit the callee?

Yes, unable to reproduce. @MatthewRummins

Bob
5:16 PM
@MatthewRummins The echos shouldn't do anything. You try it.

@DavidPostill Yes. The program is being written to a new location and then called from that new location.

Bob
In fact, I'll remove them here.
And it still works.

replace Goto top with start main_batch_file.bat

Bob
Granted, I only pressed 5 and did not go though any of the code paths with a shutdown.
@RahulBasu That's not a good solution...

I don't know robocopy - are you overwriting the destination file?

5:17 PM
@Bob then?

@DavidPostill So both windows are open for you after using the first file to copy the shutdown tool to program files and then running the program?

@bob +1 I haven't checked the shutdown option either, for obvious reasons

If you're not replacing the file, you might have an old version still there that's misbehaving in some other way

@BenN +1

@MatthewRummins Wait - you have two cmd windows open?

5:18 PM
@DavidPostill No, that is understandable. And unnecessary; it works.
@DavidPostill No. I want the caller program to remain open after it has called the second program.

@MatthewRummins use start, not call

I want both windows to stay open, but the first one closes when I call the sutdown tool.
I tried that but it did not open anything

Bob
6 mins ago, by Bob
@MatthewRummins Also FYI because your color 1A in the caller is before the :MAT, even after exiting the callee you're still in the color a scheme.

okay... this is getting confusing...

Bob
6 mins ago, by Bob
So you still have green on black even though you're back on the caller.
5 mins ago, by Bob
Also note that you'll never see the Echo Starting . . . . . because you're immediately jumping up to :MAT folowed by a cls
You have not yet responded to those.

5:21 PM
@RahulBasu Sorry, should have directed the comment to you directly

Bob
5 mins ago, by Bob
user image
And that one.

That's bizarre. The entire point of start is to launch a program detached from the current console. Something else must be up

@Bob Sorry Bob, there is a lot to respond to. Yes, I have green on black

@MatthewRummins You said "So both windows are open for you after using the first file to copy the shutdown tool to program files and then running the program?" - I only have one window that's what is confusing me.

@DavidPostill is right. There should only be one console if you're using call.

5:23 PM
@Bob Echo starting is followed by pause so should not run on as you say.

Bob
@MatthewRummins Sorry, missed that. Thought that was part of the callee.

After calling there is only one window open. The first window closes. I do not want this to happen. I want both windows to remain open. That is the problem.

Hang on, there are actually two windows open at one time?

I think you are reproing the problem.

@MatthewRummins I repeat, start not call, everywhere in all the files.

5:25 PM
Ok, only one console if using Call! And Start should work. I will try.

@MatthewRummins <bangs head on keyboard>

YES!!!!!
It works!!!
Start not call!!!
Dude, I am sweating!!!

I'm still very ??? as to why call didn't work
But I'm glad you got something you like :)

call works but closes the original program
I wanted both to remain open
Now it works!!!
Thank you all!
Arg!

@MatthewRummins The question as posed does not describe what you wanted to do - that was your problem

5:29 PM
I'm still curious - are you sure robocopy was replacing the callee every time?

Dammit, start did not work before, but maybe that is because of the code changed in the called file
@DavidPostill Using CALL command in .bat causes initial .bat file to close. How do I stop this?

Bob
...it doesn't

@MatthewRummins Was there ever an exit command in the callee?

Bob
call passes control to the callee, and then back to the caller when the callee exits.
start opens a new console window
Completely different uses.

@MatthewRummins You also said "Admin Tool.bat starts up fine, but the initial bat file closes without passing on to echo Starting . . . . ."

5:30 PM
Yes, originally. But before I changed the exit I tried changing start to call

Which is not what was happening for us!!

@MatthewRummins And what is the contents of the batch file in the Program Files place?

@MatthewRummins You clearly changed the files before you uploaded them so that they didn't match the question as you asked it.

I'm sorry I did not make myself clear enough guys. I am a new member but I will try my hardest to stick to the rules in future. You guys are the best!
@DavidPostill Sorry, I was trying to debug the file

@MatthewRummins Is it solved now?

5:33 PM
@DavidPostill I did not keep the original
@RahulBasu Yes, thank you!

Glad we could help! Before you go, could you check whether the batch file at C:\program files\Magic Programs\Magic System Tools\Admin Shutdown Tool\Admin Shutdown Tool.bat is the updated one?

@MatthewRummins That's the lesson for next time. Matching question and source code.

@DavidPostill I can see you worked hard to help me with this and I can only say I am sorry for not being clearer; But it is solved now and I have learned something about the rules of the site as well as batch.
Yes. I was trying to be SSCCE

@MatthewRummins Also don't forget to keep checking your code as you go... It saves a lot of trouble.

@RahulBasu I will

5:35 PM
@MatthewRummins No problem. I was entertained trying to find the invisible exit ;)

@DavidPostill Hahaha!

Bob
5:49 PM
Hm. Anyone here with Windows 10 and Firefox willing to test something (default programs)?

@Bob yep

Bob
@RahulBasu Can you set Firefox as the default web browser? What happens when you try?

wait a sec...
damnit, control panel is taking too long to load...
@Bob done
why?

Bob
@RahulBasu Did it just work? Does your default show as Firefox?
Weird. I appear to have broken something while uninstalling FF and installing the 64-bit version.

yeah...
@Bob do you use DE?

Bob
5:53 PM
Nah.

wait, i think i need to update FF...
@Bob never mind, it works
i have 64-bit too

does anyone know of a mini version of xampp
?

6:09 PM
I have a question about reinstalling Windows 10 on a notebook I just bought yesterday. It came preinstalled with Windows 10 but has of course a lot of Bloatware on it. Also, it consumes the entire SSD drive which I want to free up for Linux. My plan is to do a complete clean reinstall of Windows 10, but I'm not sure what I have to take care of in order to not lose the preinstalled license key. Can you give me some advice please?
Some official articles and answer here on the site mention that the key is stored inside my BIOS, how can I be sure that this is true?
Or could I somehow read the currently used key and write it down on a piece of paper to enter it again in the fresh install?
Also, do I have to activate the preinstalled Windows version first before I reinstall?
And is there anything I have to pay attention to when downloading a Win 10 iso?

Does ProduKey work on it?

Set the delimiter as some unused character when you import. — DavidPostill 5 mins ago

You can download the official Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft

@BenN checking what that is...

@DavidPostill why not set this as the answer.... i guess you didn't wannt do the whole discibing the menu thing?
@ByteCommander the ISO is basically a image of the disk you'd buy

6:16 PM
@djsmiley2k Yes, I know what an iso is... I'm mainly unsure about the licensing stuff.

oh irght yeah
i did the upgrade here, I'm unsure now if i could reinstall, and what key do i use D:

I am under the impression that OEM licenses are bound to the motherboard serial number

@djsmiley2k Something like that. I don't have excel to check the menus/settings and for the screenshots. Feel free to write an answer yourself ;)

If you take an image of the drive first, you could always put the image back on if the licensing breaks

answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki/… mentions the following steps to get the current license key:

6:18 PM
OEM of windows 10, or Win7?

Windows 8.0, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 came preinstalled on my computer, how do I find the product key?

Press Windows key + X

Click Command Prompt (admin)

Enter the following command:

wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey

Hit Enter

The product key will be revealed, copy the product key

Ah, that's probably more reliable than any third-party tool

@djsmiley2k Some Win 10 preinstalled by the manufacturer (acer).

oh right

@BenN Yes, I'm going to image all partitions using Clonezilla first.

6:19 PM
lol i get blank :/

But does it change anything if the preinstalled Windows is activated or not?

The key won't.... i'd think :/

I've read some posts that mention I have to activate Windows before reinstalling, but most of them were about upgrading from 7 or 8.

yup
i've read the same things, and I'm still confused :D

They should rename MS into ConfuseSoft...

@RahulBasu Happy Birthday! :)

thanks!

Can I create such a Win 10 installation disk from Linux as well btw?

yep, I think so
you just need to burn the ISO to the drive

But I need to run that MediaCreationTool.exe to build the iso, right?

6:54 PM
no
use rufus
then boot the iso
follow instructions

have you opened that shiny new VPN yet @RahulBasu?

@Burgi lol no
I'm probably not getting it...
Depends... It's 12:30 AM, I'll ask my mom later...

@RahulBasu Thanks, but I already rebooted into Win 7... :)

no probs

I just hope this media creation tool will not attempt to upgrade my running W7...

7:04 PM
W7? Hmm

@ByteCommander stay on win7
its much better

Yeah.
It offered to create a stick for other computers, so at least that's behaving fine.

@Burgi and after 27?

you probably got a wife by then

xD

@Burgi you can't legally drink or drive... :P

then from 28+ you start thinking "where the fuck is all the time going...."

The 27 Club is a term that refers to a number of popular musicians who died at age 27, often as a result of drug and alcohol abuse, or violent means such as homicide or suicide. The number of musicians who have died at this age and the circumstances of many of those deaths have given rise to the idea that premature deaths at this age are unusually common. The "club" has been repeatedly cited in music magazines, journals and the daily press. Several exhibitions have been devoted to the idea, as well as novels, films and stage plays. There have been many different theories and speculations about...

@ByteCommander The media creation tool isn't going to initiate a system upgrade by itself. It just lets you create installation media, by generating an ISO image or setting up a bootable flash drive.
I personally used it to generate ISO images from which I initiated installation of Windows 10.
