Q: In german we call "Mädchen für Alles" a person who mades all tasks which others friendly refuse ;-)

michael grbicSry iam little bit ironic but i would get more real world feedback or a new view why is Powershell so pushed but still even in only W2012 W8 enviroments just a pressure to Admins or just interesting involved Profs to begin really learn it and like me just put it then to another deadline...... Wh...

rotflmao ;)

@ThatBrazilianGuy yeah, saw that
Sounds like a mix of language barrier and not really getting how things work here.

> Sounds like a mix of language barrier and not really getting how things work here using a Lorem Ipsum generator.

@FaheemMitha it says there's a power cable.

1:22 PM
Whatever he's smoking I would like some of it ;)

@ThatBrazilianGuy He's basically asking "why do I need to learn powershell"

@JourneymanGeek Yes, sorry, I was trying to cut and paste.
Hang on, downloading now.
Pasting from inside Chromium isn't working.

@FaheemMitha it dosen't say what the cable is

@DavidPostill I would like to know so I don't ever try it, now that I've seen the effects.

@JourneymanGeek No, it doesn't. Bad ASUS.

1:25 PM
Yeah, but then the last bullet point (which they say it's the core of their question) asks about VB.NET vs C#
I guess even him doesn't know what his question is about.

does look like a floppy power supply
(which is sloppy)
@ThatBrazilianGuy "I prefer VB to C# - does it make a difference in learning PS?"

@ThatBrazilianGuy It doesn't seem to be any worse than drinking too many caipirinhas ;)

@JourneymanGeek 3.
Connect the power cable of your power supply to the power connector on the
Xonar DX audio card.
The PCI Express high-quality audio card requires additional power from your
computer. If the power cable is not connected properly, the audio card will not
work at all.
Is this supposed to tell me something? :-)

What is the "power cable" of the power supply?

1:27 PM
That they need a better technical writer
System requirement lists "One Available 4 pin power cable"
This person should be left a present in both his shoes.
Molex is 4 pin...

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. I wonder if any of the numerous other manuals have any more information.

@FaheemMitha I think they assume people know its a floppy power connector

@JourneymanGeek Whatever that is. I'll google it. Thanks.

Also
why do you need a soundcard?
(curious)

@DavidPostill Then It'd be Wheeeeee C# ish really cool.... PowerShell I... hic... I love you man... ZZzzzzzz

1:32 PM
Then you wake up in bed with vista...

Could be worse, could've been WinME.

@JourneymanGeek As opposed to on-board, you mean?

I don't remember now. I had some problems with on-board. Then again, this Sound Blaster Live! is hardly ideal.
I think maybe Skype-related problems. Then again, Skype is a problem.

"sound blaster live!" is a musieum piece ;p
Makes sense I guess

1:35 PM
Just buy a $5 USB "soundboard" thingy

^ that
or a USB headset

Maybe I was doing something wrong with the on-board. Are they normally trouble free under Linux?
@ThatBrazilianGuy Wouldn't that be outside the case?

@FaheemMitha yeah
@FaheemMitha maaaaybe
tho 'skype'

@JourneymanGeek Not ideal. I like things neatly tucked away.

1:37 PM
Especially in India, land of dust.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Hmm. Shiny.
I've heard USB sound cards are less problematic under Linux.

@FaheemMitha those things are probably a good idea

But rumors only. I've never owned once.

and pocketchange cheap
er.
@Bob might have owned one

Shiny? If I pay USD5 you'd probably pay, dunno, USD 0,50?

@JourneymanGeek What things? The USB sound cards?

1:38 PM
yup

Does one of those ASUS cards not have anything to recommend it, then?

@ThatBrazilianGuy USD 5 sounds about right actually

Just found out they're USD 2 here. So, converting the Brazil Cost(tm), you're able to probably get it for free. Or they'll pay you to get one.

@FaheemMitha its overkill for your needs

@JourneymanGeek And it would work better than the Sound Blaster then?

1:39 PM
It would "just work".

and be simpler

And if it didn't, you're just 2USD poorer.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ok. I'll think about it.
Would I need to disable the SB, then?

hmm
Possibly no
But you'd need to set which devices to use

@JourneymanGeek ok.

1:52 PM
ugh
Is it september?

Bob
2:03 PM
@JourneymanGeek ?
@JourneymanGeek It's always September.

;p
(Dealing with a lot of garbage today)

2 hours later…

4:42 PM
@allquixotic And here I go digging into FF/Android code I have absolutely no idea about in an attempt to bring attention to a long-standing bug -_-

@bwDraco As long as T-Mobile continues to heavily throttle people who exceed a certain number of GBs per month, and actively go after tetherers, they're useless to me.

T-Mobile accuses Verizon of misrepresenting the coverage of T-Mobile's network by using old data that fails to reflect their dramatic expansion over the last year.
Different use cases.
Your use case is not that of the typical wireless consumer as you do not have satisfactory wireline Internet access in your area.

@Bob Nice! :)

Bob
@allquixotic I don't usually go digging into massive codebases like this... I'm learning from you :P

4:50 PM
@Bob heh, yeah, I'm fairly experienced at digging through the cruft to find the place where shit gets real... looks like you found the smoking gun too

@JourneymanGeek LOL

Bob
@allquixotic The annoying thing is they don't support building for Android on Windows so I can't test the change :\
Gonna have to fix up my long-unused Linux VMs or somehow get access to an OS X machine :P
Or just wait a couple days and hope someone else cc'd into that bug sees and tries it.

The original Verizon ad is as follows:
+137 / -223. Everyone is calling it bulls---.

Bob
Ah... gotta love "hey we're slightly better than them" rather than "hey we're <quantitative value> good"

For what it's worth, Verizon service at the college campus is absolutely horrendous. Many places on the campus grounds either have no service or only 1xRTT service.
Even Sprint had slammed Verizon over this ad:

5:21 PM
The claim here is that Sprint has an LTE Advanced network that outperforms Verizon.

1 hour later…
6:33 PM
@JourneymanGeek Per our earlier discussion about floppy cables, I opened up my computer to find out what the power supply is. It's the M12D-850.
This is the manual
There is a list of cables on pg 2. Are any of them relevant?
Perhaps the: FDD (4p) (Y-adapter)?
I think FDD == Floppy Disk Drive, and 4p stands for 4 pin.

a) He's not here
b) Why do you want a floppy cable

I assume modulalr is a typo.
@qasdfdsaq Alas, there lies a story.

6 hours ago, by Faheem Mitha
Hello everyone. So, I've read reviews about Xonar DX needing a "floppy cable" for extra power. What is that about, and is it a problem for me?

I was thinking about the Xonar DX.
@DavidPostill Thank you.

Oh right. You want a floppy power connector, not a floppy cable.
And my sound card has the same connector.
And yes, that floppy 4-pin is what you need
and no, modular is not a typo

6:39 PM
modulalr is not a typo?
@qasdfdsaq Could you spell out what that line is saying, exactly?

Oh right, modualr is a typo
"Modular" is not
I was reading "Modular" in the title

I.e. what is a "FDD (4p) (Y-adapter)" when it's at home?
And what does modular mean in this context?

Bob
Modular means you can remove the cable entirely from the PSU

@Bob Ah. Ok, that should be fine. As opposed to immovably attached.

6:41 PM
And is "FDD (4p) (Y-adapter)" a cable that comes with the PSU then?
@qasdfdsaq Ok, so one end plugs into the PSU, and the other one is lying unattached in the computer?
In the hope of finding a floppy drive to plug into, I suppose.

Well that's how connectors work, yeah...

So, the end plugging into the PSU, what is that?

A modular PSU connector

A SATA connector, or it's impossible to say?

You know what a modular PSU is, right?

6:43 PM
@qasdfdsaq Not really, no.

They use proprietary connectors at the PSU end

I don't know anything about PSUs.
@qasdfdsaq Oh.

Imagine them like laptop power connectors. It's specific to the manufacturer and will only fit the type it's designed for

So, it's just a special type of plug at the PSU end, with no particular name? But, regardless, if it is still in the case, it could be plugged into the sound card, right?

@FaheemMitha Yes

6:45 PM
@qasdfdsaq Ok.

The PSU end can be any arbitrary connector defined by the power supply manufacturer. The other end is of course a standard 4-pin Molex connector

@qasdfdsaq I see. Anyway, so the end that would plug into the sound card (in this case) is the Molex 4-pin connector?

Yeah.

Anyway, I have 2, according to the specs. I'm not sure I can bring myself to open my computer up again to check. It's not exactly fun.

I'm assuming this is a PSU you already have and you're not planning to buy a new power supply to fit a sound card >_>

6:48 PM
@qasdfdsaq This is my PSU, yes. Bought it in December 2010, apparently.
Was just looking at the (totally useless) receipt.
How hard is it to put the freaking model number on the frigging receipt?
Apparently too hard. So I had to open up the computer to find out what it was.
Gosh darn it.
5 years. Not a bad run.

Lol
You should see the stuff I buy at John Lewis.
My light bulbs were listed as "Mobile Phone Accessory" on the receipt. So was my smartwatch.

What's the lifetime of something like this, anyway?
@qasdfdsaq Well, that's helpful.

Honestly, a good power supply should last decades.
In practice, probably 5-10 years is typical.
My oldest is a little over 10 years of continuous use and still going fine.

@qasdfdsaq Good to know. Hopefully Seasonic is a good power supply. It certainly cost enough.

But I've also seen 20-30 year old computers that still power on, so obviously still working PSUs

6:51 PM
Would the cables normally be left with the PSU. There certainly seemed to be a tangle of cables on top of the PSU, when I opened it.

Yeah Seasonic are a good brand. They're used by a lot of the other high-end companies to build their PSUs too
The whole point of modular PSUs is the cables can be removed and left in the box/drawer/bin when not in use

This model only has a 5 year warranty. Bummer.
@qasdfdsaq Oh. Well, I hope they're in there, because if they are not, then I don't know where they are.

Anything from 1 year to 5 years is typical for all computer products. You rarely ever see more than 5 even on enterprise gear.

@qasdfdsaq I was just looking at some Seasonic X series thing with a 7 year warranty.

If you can't find it you can easily just buy a SATA/Molex HDD to floppy adapter for $1 off Ebay.

6:53 PM
@qasdfdsaq Not here, I won't.

7 years is unusually good.

And if the connector at the PSU end is proprietary, then would any cable work?

Some Samsung SSDs have 10 years, but that's more of a gimmick than anything. They know the majority of people will have binned it by then.
You connect the adapter to the drive end.

@qasdfdsaq Yes, but I mean, if these cables connect to the PSU, and the PSU connector end is proprietary, and I've lost the cables, isn't that a problem?
@qasdfdsaq 10 years is a long time for a mass storage device, true.

No, you buy an adapter that doesn't connect to the PSU, it connects to the drive end of your existing cables

6:57 PM
Though two of the 4 HDDs in my computer were installed in early 2007. So 9 years now. How time flies. :-(
@qasdfdsaq Some other cable, then?
When I got that computer in 2007, there were 3 drives in it. 1 died, I think.

You've already got cables going from your PSU to your drive(s)
You can buy an adapter that goes between that cable and your drive, and gives you an extra connector
Chances are the one that came with the PSU is just that anyway

And most of the hardware that was in there, including the motherboard, has died. But I still have two HDDS, a couple of the fans, the case itself, and the front thingy that displays temperatures and stuff.
@qasdfdsaq The hard drives?

The floppy connectors

I guess the memory and processors didn't die, but with the mb dead they weren't very useful.
@qasdfdsaq I'm not really following, but don't worry about it. I've got a computer guy. I'll harass him.

That sounds a bit like my first PC. Kept the power supply and graphics card for about 6 years, everything else, drives, mainboard, etc. kept getting replaced every year or two
Your power supply probably came with something like this ^
If you've lost it, you can buy another one for a few dollars.

7:05 PM
@qasdfdsaq Ok.
@qasdfdsaq Both the PSU and the graphics card from 2007 are also dead, though.

You kill a lot of stuff for someone who doesn't open his PC very often

All those pieces gradually died. It's just a couple of fans, 2 HDDS, and the case at this point. And that display unit that show temp and stuff. Can't think of anything else.
@qasdfdsaq Hey, it's been 9 years. :-)
And this computer got shipped from the US to India, which probably didn't help things.
My previous two computers were still working when I stopped using them.
But they weren't moved around much.

In 15 years I've killed zero motherboards, one CPU, zero power supplies, and one stick of RAM.
And a third of the time my PC was just a bunch of boards sitting on a desk/floor and didn't even have a case.
And it's moved home about ten times.
Oh and one graphics card, because I got water on it
And the CPU died because I turned on my PC without a heatsink.

What can I say? Clearly, I'm a hardware killer.

Not as bad as one guy on an internet forum who boasted about killing 3 motherboards in a month
He even denied it was his fault. Apparently everyone just makes really unreliable motherboards.

7:16 PM
@qasdfdsaq Hmm. Might be a mains issue.
Was he using a UPS?

Or he was just really bad at overclocking

A: Difference between laptop and tablet processors?

allquixoticYou need to look at specific model numbers and part numbers, not just generic brands or series such as "i5" in order to really understand the difference. The simplest way is to google around until you can find a spec sheet detailed enough to tell you the exact model number of the CPU. For exampl...

10:40 PM
that combined with the Thunderbolt-based Nvidia card support nowadays and I'm super tempted

11:02 PM
@DavidPostill I'm sorry, your number is not valid.
@allquixotic I have to disagree, a i5 CPU for a Surface Pro is identical to those in most laptops.
Most 14" and many 15" laptops use -U type processors. There are absolutely zero 12-13" laptops with Skylake-H
At least not right now.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Heh. I was thinking Clevo might have one, but nope. 14".

@Bob I've been looking for one for ages, I don't understand why they don't do it anymore.

Bob
shrug

Four years ago you could get a 13" convertible tablet + laptop with a 37w CPU and a dedicated GPU.

Bob
They seem to have discontinued the W230S* line.
I still have a W230SS.

11:14 PM
Now it's impossible to find even a 14" convertible with a >15w CPU. Sony has announced the first, a 28w -U CPU, which isn't out yet.

Bob
The W230SD seems to have been the last one..?

It's not just them either. Acer have regressed too.

Bob
There's the AORUS X3 Plus v5. 13.9" :P

Which is not a convertible, and at 13.9 it's ... basically a 14".
In fact it's larger than many 15" cause there's about 2" of dead space at the base of the screen

Bob
Ya.

11:17 PM
That's a nice machine that I'd been considering though. But the lack of touchscreen and dubious lack of Thunderbolt irks me

Bob
Eh, Thunderbolt is easy enough to confirm with a message to the shop.

Here's the thing. It's officially not Thunderbolt capable.
Except many of the same manufacturer's similar models, and other manufacturers models, were released without Thunderbolt and later updated to it, with a firmware update.

Bob
o.O

If you look at the archive.org pages for the MSI GS40 Phantom for example, it didn't have Thunderbolt when originally released.
The same goes for most Gigabyte desktop boards.

@qasdfdsaq My number is valid. That wasn't my number.

11:21 PM
@DavidPostill I'm afraid I have to disagree. It's simply not valid.
You are an invalid.
It is simply impossible to validate this.

@qasdfdsaq Please stop with the personal insults. I am this >< close to flagging you.

@DavidPostill Sorry. It was meant to be a joke about the invalid number question.

@qasdfdsaq Apology accepted ;)
You have to be very careful making jokes when words have multiple meanings ;)

11:46 PM
lol
@FaheemMitha I have essentially the same PSU
tho a lower power vbersion
I do believe you should have a molex -> 2x floppy adaptor in that little bag of cables
