Can we not abuse flags please?

Speaking of abusive flagging, just finished writing my first telegram bot

Nerf blades
Lol that's great

3:31 AM
@Dave Cool, what does it do ?
I wrote one too xD

superuser.com/questions/1036946/… lalalalala don't feed the trolls onebox the spam

5:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ok. Thank you.

Bob

o.o

8:55 AM
Are IoT questions allowed in superuser? Like, can I ask a question about if it possible to get a Nest thermometer to work with a Samsung SmartThings Hub?

ehhhh
IMO no
But no one's really asked, and that is something we really ought to have on meta

Bob
10:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek Not as we currently define it, but it miiiight be worth broadening the scope. Or maybe that's a terrible idea. shrug

@Bob I'm not fond of how confusing the last time we broadened the scope ended up

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's more how it was handled, and partially because the market wasn't all that well established yet.
Maybe wait a few more years.

unrelatedly
ugh
People keep flagging a post I put on hold

Bob
...I just went to look up the tablet thread on MSU, found this in the search, and it turns out I was the one who added that notice -_-

FOR THE VERY SAME REASON I PUT IT ON HOLD
._.
"Stackbabies" ?

Bob
10:07 AM
Oh. Speaking of. @JourneymanGeek could you close that Q as a dupe?
dunno why I didn't just do that in the first place...
Thanks.
@JourneymanGeek stackwhat

See my answer there ;p
I referred to the then newer SE sites as the stackbabies ;p

Bob
LOL

Does this room have an automatic XKCD feed, or something?
And good afternoon.

Yep

10:23 AM
Hmm, I didn't know there was such a thing.

Coworker with a whip

10:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek Which post?

@JourneymanGeek I asked about IoT questions on meta...
0
Q: Smart Home networking questions?

paradroidAre IoT related question allowed, or going to be allowed, on superuser.com? For example, I would like to know if a Google Nest thermostat can be made to work with a Samsung SmartThings Hub. I know there is a hacking culture related to these things, but isn't there any place to ask on Stack Exch...

There are already lots of X10 questions on superuser.com by the look of it, and that is proto-IoT

11:03 AM
I had a dream that I was banned from a StackExchange chat room. But it wasn't this one.

@qasdfdsaq that canbe arranged

> To achieve this speed an i7 6700K CPU ran only one thread, voltage was set at 4.032V.
I'd like to see all the naysayers claiming 1.5v+ is dangerous on Skylake.

11:59 AM
So, need to save up £3500 for a new monitor next month

I'll be finally joining the 4K brigade. In style ;)

3.5k for a single new monitor...
sounds like something reference grade ._.
NEC?

Yeah, but it's the perfect monitor I've been waiting for for a decade
Dell.

oh. OLED?
man
that's probably more than my whole setup cost ;[

12:02 PM
4K, OLED, 120Hz, zero response time, infinite contrast, 100%+ AdobeRGB wide gamut

wait
How do you do 4k and 120hz?

10-bit colour, Thunderbolt, wide viewing angles.

The interfaces arn't there

DisplayPort 1.3 supports it. And was finalized in 2014
The monitor specs are a bit dubious though, apparently it's only supported "over the USB-C connector or Thunderbolt 3"

annnd
I've never seen a GPU that does either

12:03 PM
Ah - DisplayPort over USB-C supports 8K60/4K120

o0
curious

But seriously, it has every feature I've wanted in any monitor for the last ten years.

and costs more than my entire setup...

It's extremely rare, probably never, that I ever find a piece of technology that ticks all the boxes.
> The monitor should be released at the tail end of March with an initial price of $4999. We expect this to fall a bit once retail competition kicks in and of course we expect to see other more affordable alternatives begin to surface as well.
If I sold all my existing monitors... at full RRP it'd cover 1/3rd the price :-P
But all my existing monitors have 1/400th the contrast and 3/4 the resolution combined
Ooh, NEC just announced a 4K 120Hz monitor too, IGZO, $2,999

@qasdfdsaq Aye. that is weird. TB3 simply uses the USB-C connector. It is not an 'OR"

12:10 PM
yup

Honestly I don't mind if it can't run 4K at 120hz anyway, what I wanted was any monitor that could do 4K when I wanted it, and 1080p120 for gaming, at other times.
(Since the graphics horsepower required to drive games at 4K120 would cost as much as the monitor again)

12:36 PM
Why do you need a monitor with 100% AdobeRGB?

Because I'm a photography enthusiast and my existing monitor is 100% AdobeRGB and I don't like going backwards.

Most pro photographers use sRGB

s/pro/web/
My camera shoots in AdobeRGB and I have 10+ years of images in AdobeRGB.

You can find quite a lot of webpages that say that's not a good idea for photography.
Although I made my decision many years ago and never really looked into it since.

Tough, can't change what I did 10 years ago.
And I can't see why a wider colorspace than crappy arbitrary web standards is ever not a good idea.
That's like saying shooting at full resolution is not a good idea.
You can always scale down. You cannot scale up and recover data that was never recorded.

12:47 PM
I'm planning on getting a ThinkPad X1 Yoga, which came out recently, but in a couple of months an OLED version is coming out. Not sure if I should wait for it, as 1st generation laptop tech is usually quite dodgy.
Quite probably has screen burn-in issues. I've heard there is some sort of tool that comes with it on Windows, that reduces the brightness of stuff like the taskbar, so this seems like a big downside. Also, when running linux what do you do?
But reports from CES 21026 says it looks pretty amazing.

OLED's not really first gen.

It is for laptops. Also, one of my best friends was part of its invention!
A university friend who has been working at DuPont for nearly 15 years now. Did papers on the blue LED life problem, for Samsung.
See if I can find his stuff. It's mind-blowingly hard reading.

I'd go for IPS now, personally
(My main monitor's IPS. Not redunculously pricy, and good ones are decent)

Oh 9 years., This is him, anyway... linkedin.com/in/marc-sims-4a51276h

9 years is a lifetime for PCs ;p
I suspect the big issues with OLEDs is burn in (which is vaguely handleable) and yield (which is why most OLEDs were small)

12:56 PM
@JourneymanGeek You seen the X1 Yoga? First ThinkPad that seems amazing enough since the keyboard change for me to want it.

@paradroid I don't typically like convertables

I've never had one, but I've been waiting for something like this. With the stylus, it's like having a much more functional and portable Wacom Cintiq for a fraction of the cost.
Great for Photoshop (and OneNote).

(my current objects of drool are surface pros and the razer blade stealth)
even then I'll prefer my real computer for actual work ;p

Ah, I was planning on getting a Surface Pro, in addition to a new Thinkpad, until this came along. Beats it in every way and I only need one device this way.

(for that matter, the closest thing to a daily driver laptop I have's a HP stream, and a X220 ;p)

1:01 PM
I had been planning on getting another X220 to go along with the Surface Pro, but no need now.
(My X220 was stolen, ages ago)

:(
I upgraded my x220 a fair bit from stock
SSD, and doubled the ram from the original 4gb

Mine already had an IPS screen and fingerprint reader, webcam, second best CPU in the range etc. Upgraded to SSD and 16GiB RAM.

(Actually, the x220 gets any hardware that's left over. Did a 3 way switcharoo with drives and ram, since I upgraded my desktop to a 850 pro, and replaced my brix so the ram from the brix got moved to the x220)

The 16GiB RAM was massive overkill, as I never used many concurrent VMs or anything, so I regretted splashing out for that

1:04 PM
my desktop has 16gb

Yeah, fine on desktop, essential on home server..

(secondary box/home server has 8, but I might want to run VMs on it, and it needs dual channel ram to do 4K)
It can go to 16, but its a quad core braswell, so it felt like overkill
(also its rediculously small)

Bob
Very... demanding.

@Bob ._.
robots don't have phones?

Bob
...apparently not?

1:07 PM
They probably want to spam you through SMS

Bob
Nah.
Office 365 Business.
This is the kind of thing that won't spam - because that's a terrible image for them.

I use that. Never seen that dialogue though

Bob
Speaking of, there was the default-unchecked option for "promotional offers" :P

@paradroid yeah, but you never click around with the speed of a fox, so you never trip their possible-selenium-script detection algorithm :P

heh

Bob
1:10 PM
Eh, I went for the 1 month trial.
Will probably go on Business Essential after.
Got 365 Home anyway.

Which plan?

Bob
@paradroid Business Premium trial. There's no plan choice for trial.

That doesn't come with Exchange Online though
That's like the main thing for me.

Bob
@paradroid Yes it does...

1:11 PM
@allquixotic @Bob got a tablet?
;p

repcapped ;)

apparently

Oh, does it? Okay. I'm on E4 or soemthing.

Bob
"Business Essentials" is email. "Business" is Office. "Business Premium" is both.

@DavidPostill nice ;p

Bob
1:12 PM
@paradroid Ah. The Enterprise range is different.
And entirely unnecessary for me, considering I'm the only one using it :P
Just wanted to finally start moving out from Gmail.
I don't like being at the mercy of one ('free') provider...

@DavidPostill superuser.com/questions/1036740/… this keeps getting flagged
Its 1. closed. 2. I've added a mod comment why

Same here, but I got onto it when it was free for authorised resellers, which I am, but I've only sold to two clients, but they still seem to be giving me the whole lot for nothing. Even though the free usage ended well over a year ago. Don't know how I snucked under the radar...

@paradroid Heh. I'm happy to pay some $7-$8/month for email. My only gripe is the lack of subaddressing.

My SharePoint, Exchange Online, everything seems to work still, apart from the Office subscriptions

@JourneymanGeek Ah. That question ;)
Can you tell who is flagging to reopen?

Bob
1:15 PM
Speaking of which, if you don't mind, could you vote for it? office365.uservoice.com/forums/273494-outlook-and-calendar/…
:)

@DavidPostill they arn't
they're flagging it cause it is strange

@Bob Where in the web interface did you copy that?

Bob
@paradroid That was in the email.
I'm trying to get people to vote for that suggestion - hopefully they'll add it soon...

@JourneymanGeek I just voted to delete ;)

Bob
It's already supported on their outlook.com service :\

1:17 PM
@DavidPostill that's fine
thing is it'll get roombaed

Bob
@paradroid Was the "Welcome to your Microsoft Office 365 trial" email.

It's on -5 so probably not worth keeping around.

Do you guys get a lot of questions here?

We seem to be getting more questions over in U&L as time passes.

1:17 PM
Still all works though...!

@FaheemMitha SU or RA?

Though I don't keep track.
@JourneymanGeek SuperUser. What is RA?

RA is here ;p
@FaheemMitha fair amount

Oh, the chat room. No, I meant the main site.

Bob

 Root Access

For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?

1:18 PM
@FaheemMitha Root Acess

@paradroid Yes, I've been tempted by the same laptop, but decided to wait for the OLED version. Been using OLED displays on all my phones for some time now, and still annoyed that the contrast on laptop/desktop displays is so inferior.

@FaheemMitha ~150-200 questions a day I guess

Bob
holy crap that's a lot of options...
this reminds me of the sharepoint admin panels

@JourneymanGeek I dunno if it's my personal experience on desktop displays but I had the vague recollection IPS displays have higher power drain.

Bob
that's not a good thing btw :P

1:19 PM
@JourneymanGeek Ok. That's probably more than U&L. And that's a lot of questions, actually. The mods must be kept busy.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Compared to TN or OLED?
or, what was that other one
VA

@JourneymanGeek How many flags do you get in a day on SU?

somewhere north of a hundred I recon

@Bob Subaddressing? You can make aliases, if that is what you meant.

1:22 PM
@Bob TN, I think. Discussing OLED's power consumption is like entering an Apple vs. Android argument.

@JourneymanGeek Seriously?

Bob
@paradroid I meant the automatic 'aliases'.

Checking to see how many mods you have here...

My professional desktop display has very high power consumption, and I recall reading reviews mentioning IPS was a part of that.

Bob
As set out in RFC 5233

1:22 PM
@Bob IPS

Bob
Having to manually create aliases for every little thing would get tiring, fast.
@paradroid Oh yea, IPS's power consumption is so much lower than IPS's power consumption.

OLEDs??

Oh, I see 9 listed. That's quite a lot.

@paradroid IPS

@FaheemMitha we had 10 at one point

1:24 PM
@JourneymanGeek And one left?

Well OLED power consumption depends on what is being displayed. Very little for a black screen and lots for a white screen.

Or retired?

Are the 9 all active?

to varying extents

Bob
1:24 PM
@qasdfdsaq Interesting. I've never really cared much about power consumption of desktop monitors. Laptops though...

In theory we put in something like half an hour of moderation a day

@Bob Yeah me neither (except when they heat my room) but I'm assuming the fundamental technological differences translate over to laptops too.

@JourneymanGeek That's a fair amount.

Bob
Moderate in moderation.

Especially now that the screen uses the majority of the idle power in a modern laptop.

1:25 PM
(I do somewhat more at the moment)

There are some days I feel like I'm probably not doing 1/2 hr productive work.

but I scale back if I'm busy (I was rolling in walking along a muddy ex-train track this morning)

Bob
wtf are Sway/Yammer?

Some chat/collabaration things from Microsoaft

Bob
Storytelling... 'enterprise social network' o.O

1:27 PM
Oh. Sway is that thing to make powerpoint-like websites easily.

Wasn't their purchase of Lync/Skype for Business meant to be the enterprise communication shit?

Yammer is the social thing

Bob
> Sorry, we can't process your request.
We're investigating right now. Please try again later.
I can't even add a domain.
Not off to a great start.

@qasdfdsaq from what I heard... shit's a good way to refer to it...

Skype for Business is just a new name for Lync

Bob
1:28 PM
Oh look. A primer on what DNS does, and what domains are.
Uhh... somehow I get the feeling that if someone doesn't know that then they really have no business being on this page :P

There are a fuckton of DNS records to add for O365 stuff

@Bob A lot of small businesses don't have dedicated I.T. staff and just use the geekiest normal person they can find in the office to do the I.T. stuff.

Bob
> Watch the video to learn more about domains and DNS (3 minutes)

@qasdfdsaq That's what the cloud is all about...

1:30 PM
Boeing released a video a while back on "How to doubt an ILS - A free lesson!"

Bob
Ha, they detect it as Enom, not Namecheap.

Outsourcing servers..

Bob
hm
I should change my password

@paradroid Yes, outsource the LAN DHCP and DNS servers. Real clever.

Bob
> Changed on Oct 6, 2012 3:16 AM EDT
lol

1:32 PM
@qasdfdsaq Of course that is not what I mean. MS still want AD onsite.

@paradroid Do you even read what you reply to?

Yeah. Just double checked... ??

@Bob boeing.com/commercial/aeromagazine/aero_21/… Boeing has revised its flight crew training manuals and operations manuals and has sent all airline customers a 26-min CD-ROM video, “New Zealand 60 — A Free Lesson.”
Here, have a CD-ROM teaching your pilots on how to not fly a plane into the ground.

Bob
O_O

(AKA if someone doesn't know how to read an ILS probably has no business flying a passenger jet)

1:34 PM
I thought it was all GPS based these days, rather than ILS
Well, I would expect it to be, anyway
Makes it cheaper for small airports too

Bob
> No alarm sounded in the control tower because the cable that fed information to the tower navigation status displays had been cut during construction.
...
@paradroid You don't land by GPS.

I can't see accurate GPS cannot be used for that. I know what ILS is. I'm an aviation nut.
GPS with altimeter, of course
The Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) is a military, all-weather landing system based on real-time differential correction of the GPS signal, augmented with a local area correction message, and transmitted to the user via secure means. The onboard receiver compares the current GPS-derived position with the local correction signal, deriving a highly accurate three-dimensional position capable of being used for all-weather approaches via an ILS-style display. While JPALS is similar to Local Area Augmentation System, but intended primarily for use by the military, some elements of...

Bob
Correction. You don't land by pure GPS.
Though I don't know how much more or less reliable than ILS the LAAS equipment is.

@paradroid Do you even read what you're replying to?
@Bob Well the miltary stuff is military stuff. Civilian aircraft use either ILS or MLS, MLS being more accurate but not available as widely.
Although you could land with pure GPS. Enhanced GPS can be extremely accurate.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq But is it reliable?

1:41 PM
The French used GPS for building the Millau Viaduct, to an accuracy to 1cm across a 2.5km span.

@qasdfdsaq Not sure what you are referring to.

@paradroid The fact that three times now you've replied to messages saying things completely unrelated to what you replied to

Bob
Hm, actually. I wasn't aware of LPV. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

I like how European WAAS has better coverage than American WAAS.

@qasdfdsaq Sorry man, but I don't know what you mean, as I looked back and the ones I think you may be referring to, are linked to your comments that I intended them to be.

1:47 PM
@paradroid I don't know what you mean would be an appropriate response to most of your replies.

@qasdfdsaq Example(s)? Genuinely confused, but whatever. Let's chill

@paradroid The last one

Last?

Bob
Yay, domain verified.

@Bob You got onsite AD?

Bob
@paradroid Nup.

@Bob Just wondering if you were doing single sign-on for O365

Bob
> Sorry, that didn't work
This doesn't look like a valid user ID.
@_@
@paradroid Nah.
This is just for personal use.

ok. Not tried it, but now it is much less risky, as you can use Azure AD as like a secondary , so you don't get totally locked out of O365, if your single AD server goes kaput.
...as far as I understand it, anyway..

Bob
I have enough AD/SSO-related nightmares at work, thanks.

1:52 PM
@Bob You should post a question on how to make it valid:
-6
Q: How to change my number to valid number?

user555255I want to know how to change my number to valid number. ringht now! Please faster do the job. My number is 0122584653

Bob
lol

> I want to know how to change my user ID to valid user ID. ringht now! Please faster do the job. My user ID is sneakyfox123

Bob
hmm
mobile device management
actually that sounds interesting... but not now :P

main problem with BYOD is that it tends to lock down your device to ridiculous levels and monitor just about everything you do -_-
phones need VMs or containers where you can isolate your work stuff from the non-work stuff

@allquixotic s/I|My/Bob/g
@allquixotic Yep. Lots of people complained about that at my last company
(In respect to Exchange/Office, but outside Exchange there were no restrictions)

1:56 PM
wasn't Samsung messing with some kind of containerization on the Galaxy platform?

@allquixotic They do! Samsung Knox!

@Bob It only restricts things or lets you sideload company apps, I think

Bob
@paradroid I'd be interested in the remote wipe :P
Maybe later.

Oh yeah, that too.

@Bob That was the biggest thing users complained about, particularly students moaning why does my university need the ability to wipe my phone just so I can use email?

1:58 PM
hmm... I would really like to see some kind of broader support for Samsung Knox and whatever else comes along that's similar... on the Android side, I think the ideal would be to have Google push it into AOSP, so all vendors will use it
on the iOS side, well, it's hard to imagine Apple doing anything remotely compatible with the rest of the market

Bob
@qasdfdsaq yea that's overkill for a uni...

and they'd probably be several years late to the game, if indeed anything like that ever comes at all to iOS
