@HackToHell Bob the builder, can you fix it, bob the builder yes we can! That man is my childhood hero.

and hi :)

Hi there :D

zomfg i can hear someone elses skype in teh office, pop opop someone spoke to them
I'm going to expldoe.

Netherlands has a four day working week
I know where I will be going soon

Mhh, random question: could you recommend a good web-browser to me? I feel like installing a new one. I'm on windows 7 64bit. Chrome is 32 bit and all that *32 in my task manager is making me cringe. I'd love to hear what you guys are using.

12:03 PM
@Nick :D

@HackToHell is that 10 hour dayS?
/me would prefer that I think, cept getting to work would be a pita.
right now i'm split between two offices, tho we are looking at new shiftplans and stuff, as eventually will be 24/7

Are Canary and Nightly any good for long term use?

Funny thing is, if i did constant nights, it'd actually work quite well with my/wife/2.0's/ scehdule.
If said nights were worked from home? EVEN BETTTTAAA.
;)

Ermagahd... WoW64 looks like it's working overtime.

see now any one of those processes could crash, and all the rest of them would go along like nothing happend, tis a great feature, although not crashing is often a better feature

12:16 PM
@djsmiley2k No dea

@Psycogeek It seems scary actually. So, I'm okay with running chrome?

@Nick I wont run it, the chrome users have scared me

@Psycogeek So, you're saying I should switch to Firefox?

ask bob?
About the fox ask the fox.

sure, next time he comes around.
@Psycogeek Hey, I've heard that it's bad to run 32bit on 64bit because it consumes more memory or something. Is that true?

12:29 PM
wow yikes. got load of html source for some tables, and my confluence doesn't have the html widget :(
I've converted one set by hand, taken some 3-4 hours :(

I'd be running chrome if I had oneliner for it

Bob
@Nick There's nothing wrong with 32-bit processes, really.
@Nick Nope. Not true at all.
Personally, though, I prefer FF.

@Bob But so many people say no no about it.

Bob
(side note: it should have native 64-bit soon)
@Nick so many people are utterly clueless
you might have a teensy bit more indirection for syscalls, but consuming more memory? !!no. also, x86-64 procs will run just fine in protected mode

lol people say 32bit is bad?

Bob
12:33 PM
@djsmiley2k It just is. It's not completely better or worse than 64-bit. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

ok now i'm lost ;)
yeah

@djsmiley2k No, they say 32bit on 64bit is bad but I don;t know why. @Bob is most likely right. WoW64.dll does not take that much memory.

Bob
64-bit has more registers available. It can operate more efficiently on 64-bit arithmetic. It can address more memory. It has the NX bit (good for security). Probably more I don't know off the top of my head.

@Bob I think the speed is what appeals to the consumer.

Bob
32-bit is more broadly compatible (not an inherent advantage, but one just the same). It uses less space for its native word size. The pointers are smaller.
@Nick The "speed" doesn't make a lick of difference to the vast majority of consumers.
You'll normally only encounter significant quantities of 64-bit arithmetic on scientific calculations, simulations, etc..
The NX bit and more addressable memory are the primary benefits.
The additional registers are relatively minor in a world where most CPUs are sitting idle most of the time.

12:38 PM
@Bob I use my comp. for 3D modelling, video/sound editing and other compilations. It makes a difference to me.

Bob
@Nick You need to stop thinking about WoW64. It's mostly there for syscalls. 32-bit code will run entirely natively on an x86-64 processor - the WoW64 layer only applies for the Windows API. And even then I believe it's only for kernel calls (don't take my word for it...).

@Psycogeek Yes. Shipping partner who ships from his warehouse on my behalf.

@Bob I know what you mean. Everything seems so bloated.

"In fact, its disruption in the space has caused many of its brick and mortar competitors to lose a ton of business (or even go out of business like CompUSA, Circuit City, and Radio Shack)."

@Psycogeek The guy talks about Amazon opening their first ever brick and mortar store and sweeping every business around... Like you mentioned recently abotu RadioShack going out of business.

@Bob ohk. I'm reading into that now.

Bob
12:41 PM
> In order to be able to run 32bit binaries on a 64bit windows version, there has to be an extra layer between usermode and kernelmode. This is because a 64bit kernel expects 64bit pointers as parameter, whereas the 32bit application provides 32bit pointers.

This brings us to segments, on WOW64 there are two code segments, the code from our 32bit binary will run in segment 0×23, which tells the CPU to emulate a 32bit CPU. However, when a syscall is made, the CPU has to switch to segment 0×33, which makes the CPU use the 64bit instruction set.
I read that one a while ago for an entirely different reason. But it conveniently happens to be one of the first Google results for the current topic of discussion :P
oh yea, it was from here:

Q: Systrace for Windows

BryanI'm looking for a Windows equivalent of Systrace or at least strace. I'm aware of StraceNT, but wondering if there are any more alternatives out there. Specifically, I'm looking for a specific way to programmatically enforce system call policies, though this can be after the fact rather than act...

@Nick Still quite minor. Most modelling is performed with floating point arithmetic, not integer arithmetic. Same for video and audio editing.

@Bob Mhh, it seems the hype all those years ago was for nothing.

Bob
You might experience a bit of a speedup copying double-precision floating point numbers around, since they're 64 bits wide and will fit in one word rather than two, but the actual maths isn't going to be faster.
@Nick As above: more addressable memory is a huge win, and the NX bit does help quite a lot security-wise.
More addressable memory also improves ASLR (again, security).
Those are the primary benefits.
The extra registers and larger native word size do help, but not so much in typical consumer use.

Is there any way I can set the ip address of the Network based on the SSID it connects to ?

@Bob You really break things down and make them digestible. Thank you.

bleh I simply write something to do it

Bob
12:47 PM
If @allquixotic were awake he'd probably chime in with something I either completely forgot about or got wrong :P

WAKE UP @allquixotic
YOU ARE WANTED

Bob
@HackToHell I don't think there's anything native apart from DHCP, but some third-party programs can, and there's probably some hook/event you can listen to if you're writing a program.

@Bob All the third party programs are large
It's better if I just write one
And it will be a good exercise \m/
@Bob I should be looking at Windows API right ?

Bob
@Nick Also, one of the main points of shared libraries is that, well, they're shared. The image is only loaded in memory once regardless of how many running processes are linked to it. Doesn't matter if you have one or a hundred processes relying on it, you'll only have a single WoW64.dll instance in memory.
@HackToHell Or .NET :D

A: How do I check for a network connection?

Mitch WheatYou can check for a network connection in .NET 2.0 using GetIsNetworkAvailable(): System.Net.NetworkInformation.NetworkInterface.GetIsNetworkAvailable() To monitor changes in IP address or changes in network availability use the events from the NetworkChange class: System.Net.NetworkInformati...

@HackToHell .... you can on linux with wpa_supplicant.conf.....
I realise that may not be what you're looking for.
Sigh
I can't find a good/working/sane converter for html to confluence :(

12:53 PM
@Bob: ^ I see a lot of instances... or maybe I'm interpretting that wrong.

Bob
@Nick Again, it should all be linked to a single instance in memory.
If you look with RAMMap it'll come under "mapped file".

@Nick Check via rammap
@Bob Okay C# it is :D

Bob
@HackToHell You can dig into the reference source to find out what the native API calls are (referencesource.microsoft.com/#System/net/System/Net/…), but it looks like it's not that simple...
not a simple native call... lots of other stuff

@HackToHell I have to download a bunch of stuf now. Gosh. My download list is getting too long.

@djsmiley2k: write one? ;p

12:56 PM
@Bob I'll take your word for it.

@JourneymanGeek haha, i'm no programmer.

@djsmiley2k: neither am I. !

There's an library \m/

Bob
@HackToHell You don't need it.
See the linked SO answer above.
There's an event baked into .NET for it.

1:01 PM
For example I don't know how to use this:

A: How do I convert HTML code to Confluence-style Wiki Markup?

JoshDMHere is how you do it in Mylyn using the WikiText Standalone. Substitute the appropriate DocumentBuilder for your desired Wiki markup (you'll have to check the API to see what's available; TextileDocumentBuilder also exists). File ConvertToConfluence.java: package com.stackoverflow.mylyn; imp...

Bob
@HackToHell That looks like it's for managing profiles, not IP settings. Use the System.Net.NetworkInformation.NetworkChange.NetworkAvailabilityChangedevent and change the IP address using built-in classes.

But Network Interface doesn't have a property to get the SSID msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/…

@HackToHell Pssst, do you have a list of essential downloads besides bluescreenview and Rammap. You guys are really pointing me in a very interesting direction. I could do trial and error with random stuff but considering your experience in this regard, I'd really like your input.

1:03 PM
@Boris_yo leagaly all the wiping out the competition is just capitolism , and would be good , but when it comes to buying up (swollowing) the competition , there were laws in place called Anti-competitive that were used to stop everything from being run by OMNICorp (fictitious all owning future corporation) . These laws would stop the sale or merger or takeover/buyout , that would remove ALL competition.

@Nick: most geeks have a PRETTY extensive toolkit ;p

Bob
@HackToHell Oh, in that case shrug :P
probably something in WMI
@Nick I just download stuff as I need it.
Actually, I download a new copy of RAMMap every time I need it -_-.
Don't like BlueScreenView that much. I prefer loading the crashdump into WinDbg.
BSV doesn't always show the correct faulting module.
WinDbg analysis is far more thorough.

@Nick I have all the sysinternals tools in my path :D

@Bob Hopefully, that's because you uninstall it. This better not be crapware.

Bob
BSV has a habit of just showing ntoskrnl when it's really some WiFi driver :\

1:05 PM
Downloaded it through chocolatey before it broke

Bob
@Nick It has no installer.

It's a single exe file

Bob
The only side effect of running it is a flag gets set in the registry indicating you've accepted the EULA.
Nothing apart from that.

@HackToHell That sounds compact. I very much prefer that sort of thing. Lightweight

Bob
@HackToHell btw, if you were on WinRT: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/…
:P

1:06 PM
@Boris_yo Eventually things got so big, the definitions of having competition changed. Where once it may have been anti-competitive and a monopoly to have only 1 office store , in a single town/city. it is now a monopoly if there is only 1 Office store in the whole friggen country.

In fact \\live.sysinternals.com\tools\rammap.exe works

Bob
WinRT has all these fancy new APIs not available from .NET or Win32 :(

> Minimum supported client
Windows 8.1
Well it's only for me ;p
I can even do it through JS :O

Bob
@HackToHell Only if you write something for WinRT
That's not a .NET module, even if it looks like one.
(WinRT is the whole metro/modernui/whateveritscalled thingy)

@Bob You mean like Google's Material Design?

1:11 PM
It's part of MS's universal app thingy
Same APIs for Windows phone/ Desktop/ Xbone(?)

@Boris_yo If we go back in time to where anti-competitive laws were applied, as they should have been, a "Chain" corporation may have been concidered monopolising when it buys up 10 coffee shops in one city and converts them to $tarbucks. Now If there exist another ONE coffee shop somewhere in porkatello idaho , $tarbucks can buy every coffee shop in the whole country, as long as that 1 lone piece of competition exists.

I can't even add the assembly directly :O

@Psycogeek Thankfully the world isn't so barren.

@Boris_yo They have allowed OMNIcorp to buy everything and anything, and cross merger and buyout until they do own everything , based on some weak competition , that they may even prop up for a few minutes, so they can say it exists. about 2-5 years after they make the OMNIbuy , the competition collapses, and at that point it is too late. there is no law saying you cant destroy the competition . That would be anti-capitolist

Well, that's what happens when someone uses free hosting. Btw, what's with the downvotes?

I suspect its off topic, but not sure it there's a better place for it

@Nick not barren owned :-) drive into a town to grab some fast food, and you see 4 fast food places, But they are all owned by PepsiCo. look at they ton of shampoos that you can wash your hair with , with hundreds of brands, but they are all owned by Proctor&Gamble (or whomever owns them this week).

@JourneymanGeek We can't make anymore sites, man. There are just so many se sites now. All of it is just running on the fumes of StackOverflow. You gotta keep it in scope.

What's math.se? ;p
meh, never been on SO ;p

1:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek Sure, the almost 100k guy would say that but there's a lot of criticism out their saying SuperUsers is overhyped.

lol
@Nick: oh, really.
and darn it people, why are there downvotes and no close votes. I need to be the bad dog guy now.

@JourneymanGeek No, I only read one but yeah, other forums have certain benifits. Like for example our attack victime could be spared downvotes and actually helped much better.

@HackToHell *snore* I'm awake; I'm awake!

So I just cleaned a pc. Nothing special, didn't even remove the heatsink or anything. However, now I just get a blank screen on boot. :(
The problem is not the monitor.

1:37 PM
@Nick: there's probably a better site for it.
And its how you ask the question

Any ideas?

donno
you're there
check all the cables!

@Nick We help users who help themselves. Coming to us in panic with a very general, broad problem is not something that's encyclopedic in nature. It's hard to see how that question, unmodified, could be suitable on any SE site.

@JourneymanGeek I know. I'm bad at asking questions. I'm thinking I'll hang around in a few chatrooms a bit, google around before attempting to ask anything on main.

@JourneymanGeek Yep, tried that. Doesn't work. :(

1:40 PM
You mentioned "forums" -- none of the SE sites are forums. Getting the word "forum" out of the terminology helps you begin to separate in your mind, SE sites and forums. The two are completely different animals.

I did try removing the heatsink but it is very solidly fixed onto the.. thing.

@allquixotic I know, YA!-style, Quora-style, SE-style and Forum-style are different animals.

@Nick You're probably correct that a help forum with the right people staffing it / browsing it might actually provide him more help on his particular issue
but oddly enough, the #1 goal of Super User is not to help individuals asking questions :P it's very counterintuitive

Blah looks like there is no way to change the IP address using the WinRT API
Looks like I must use a mixture of both

the #1 goal of Super User is to help the thousands of other people who will Google and find hits on our site, and hopefully those hits will be relevant to them
the problem with a hack victim is, each individual is going to handle it completely differently, depending on the exact circumstances

1:42 PM
@Nick: asking good questions isn't hard

@allquixotic I think I get what you mean.

Quora sucks !#_#

the steps that help Hack Victim "A" solve a problem, may have no overlap with the steps that help Hack Victim "B" solve their problem

@allquixotic: and we don't know why he got hacked

IMHO it doesn't really matter why -- yes, he may have been a bad actor himself, but if a site is getting hacked, there should at least be a place on the web you can go to get tips on how to restore it -- but, it's going to depend heavily on your hosting provider, how you have it set up, versions of stuff, how much risk you're willing to take, etc

1:44 PM
@allquixotic: he's on 000
they're free so, chances are he's not going to get much help

@Lokkij If you did not change anything, then prefer to not start tearing it to pieces , untill you have been more persistant with it starting up :-) I assume you unplugged it for this cleaning? There are times when an aged computer will have trouble starting the first time (when all power is removed). Keep checking stuff prior to tearing it to shreds, and keep giving it a chance to do what it did, when you did not change anything.

like for example, you might be able to find the root cause of the hack and prevent that specific attack from happening again, but if you don't totally wipe your wordpress instance, you can't be sure it won't come back

If he'd given a lot more information - maybe plugins, and such, and taken the least amount of effort, I'd have checked at pro webmasters for example.

also, wordpress is a goat

lol
I run it, only cause all the other alternatives are also goats ;p

1:45 PM
@JourneymanGeek I think the real problem is a lack of actually popular and well-used help forums .

Mine's a pretty basic instance so, smaller threat window

there are some good help forums out there, but the problem is, the people with the knowledge who contribute answers get burned out because of all the help vampire, low quality questions
!!hv

yup
and building a community is hard

it's harder to get burned out on a site like Super User, when you can pretty much always look at the front page and find a good question that's interesting to answer

1:47 PM
and I don't mean the infrastructure

you might also find crap questions, but there are dozens of users who just love to root them out and close/delete them

(actually, that's A Thing). A great question is one you want to know the answer to ;p

@Lokkij If you had the power off , from the wall (for the first time in a long time) could be the cmos battery was low and you lost your cmos settings. If you even bumped your heat sink, well those socket connections are critical on the newer processors.

you'd still be able to boot

I bet Jon Skeet learns something new from at least 50% of the questions he answers on SO

1:48 PM
.... is the power switched on?
2
@allquixotic: no, he's probably forgotten more than everyone on SO knows combined ;p

@Psycogeek Hmm I'll check that

webhostingtalk might be a decent forum for that guy to ask his "hacked" question though

could be

2:07 PM
?
there is a System.Runtime; I think it's looking for version 4.0.0.0 though and that's the problem
is that at compile-time or runtime?

Compile Time
There is System.runtime.x
Not System.runtime alone

System.Runtime is a Namespace
and an assembly

But there's no such thing :'(

it's probably in System.dll, then, and you are just compiling with the wrong .NET version
make sure you're targeting .NET 4.0
System.Attribute is in mscorlib.dll, which is the core runtime of the framework
you just need to have the correct mscorlib version linked in

It might be related to the WinRT apis
And the target framework is .NET 4.5.1
Google isn't helping o0

Bob
2:12 PM
@HackToHell WinRT and .NET aren't compatible, IIRC.
You either develop for WinRT/Store/Mobile, or for .NET/Desktop.

why are you using WinRT at all?

Bob
@allquixotic So, how much did I get wrong? :P

@allquixotic cause I am lazy
Mostly cause it has a method to get the SSID
of the wireless network the PC is connected to
@Bob :(
For this method ;p

@Bob in regards to what, exactly?

That says I can
Though it's for 8

@allquixotic I still want to look at getting rid of pjs at some point...

Added an assembly and it now works fine

@Bob in favor of what?

Bob
but that's pretty much at the bottom of the todo list :P

Xvfb?

Bob
@allquixotic dunno, something properly headless

2:35 PM
Node? :D

Bob
probably nodejs so the existing JS can run
atom-shell is an option, but that's far from headless
it just drops the java/selenium stuff for embedded chromium

how about nw.js (was: node-webkit)?
is that mature enough yet?
> We have plan to support headless. Please watch #769
:(

Bob
@allquixotic nw.js is rather patched-together... atom-shell actually seems more stable
nw.js jumps straight into a webpage
nw.js starts with a JS script that can launch windows, load pages, etc.
but atom-shell is specifically designed to be run with a UI :P

2:51 PM
And I can't figure out why
Debugging help pls :/

@HackToHell isnt that a microsoft blog? do you go to Microsoft answers to get fixes too :-) what goes wrong? and did you see how the data was showing after the change in the GUI for the adapter?
If you set it manually in the GUI , does it work fine that way? Because they certannly didnt cover cases where it wouldnt.

Bob
@Psycogeek Most MSDN blogs know what they're talking about.
In fact, most of MSDN overall.
@HackToHell That's not much info to work on.
"doesn't work" => in what way does it not work?
does your computer catch fire when you run it?

5:12 PM
hi bob

Bob
'lo

Just found this today while checking my laptop's clock accuracy
Seems Windows has some issues with auto time sync and I have to do it manually.
Once manually synced, time.is reports "Your time is exact!" (It was previously off by 7.3 seconds.)
I would normally assume my laptop's clock is accurate to no worse than 0.5 seconds, which is what I consider good enough to use as a time reference for setting other devices' clocks
Will do some more experimentation to see how much the clock drifts over time and to ensure the time sync works as expected.

@DragonLord time.windows.com is pretty fucked; try us.pool.ntp.org instead
the time.windows.com server itself appears to be 59 seconds drifted from atomic time

Okay, changed the NTP server.

(alarming since it's the default NTP clock for Windows)

5:29 PM
Guess I'll have to manually sync the clock before relying on my laptop's time for anything that needs to be second-accurate :-)

I run a virtual machine, so it gets even worse here (though VMware does occasionally sync my time between the desktop and VM through VMware Tools)
if it goes uncorrected, clock drift in a VM is pretty hilarious
something like 30 seconds per day iirc
It's rlemon! *runs*

I don't really care about Win32 API compatibility in a phone.

@FredMcgiff Please don't ask to ask; if you simply ask your actual question, we will help you if we know the answer or can help you find it. This is much faster and simpler than asking if it's OK to ask. As a rule, it is always OK to ask in this channel. Please go ahead.

Well I learned a valuable lesson and that was never use a cable that is not OEM when trying to upgrade 6 months back was upgrading Iphone 5 sprint via itunes. Failure of upgrade due to cable Now every boot iPhone 5 ssays insert sim.

Bob
@allquixotic my brain isn't working too well apparently

@DragonLord me neither, but it'd be cool to have ;p "Oh no, I'm in the wilderness with only my phone, and they need this work done NOW and it's only possible by running an .exe!!!"

Bob
@FredMcgiff I don't think anyone currently here uses an iPhone...

The worst part is that the sim port has damaged pins inside the Sim card port destroyed and no way of a sim to be
.

Bob
Also, I wouldn't touch an iOS update with a ten foot pole.
Not since I had to try to figure out why iTunes wasn't working for my boss.

i know i was justing using it on wifi only

Bob
Hint: we just reformatted the computer. Because iTunes is ridiculously broken.

@Bob remember that phase I had where I was kinda pining after one? I almost got drawn into the RDF. Almost.

@FredMcgiff Consider asking on Ask Different
