@DragonLord not to worry, on mine it changed the drive to C: which was odd, because on old XP system one would have to change that in mounted devices to complete a cloned over os. (and make the letter the way i would want it)

Most of the programs are still going through the hard drive

It helps (back there with the drive letter issue) to have changed the Friendly label on the Partitions , soes ya know which is which.

Ugh. Screwed up a merge from my local branch to the trunk and now I have to fix it before end of day due to weekend.

the BCD edit would take the drive letter as the parmeters for the command to set the pointers. but is using the drive ID to set where it actually points . (another confusing thing)

@DragonLord Nothing has changed yet on the original disk , and as long as you do not alter the BCD on the original, so the Boot Menu should (still) be able to get you back to an operating state.

Some people would say "we do not need too many Dictator moderators" I say "if you have an ample quantity of them they can handle things easier and are more happy" so (if my idea is correct) there would be less errors of judgement , and more time to judge.

I never had to use the Windows installation media for my old laptop

If i could do it, anyone can. they just make it look hard to sell programs that do it for you :-)

@DragonLord But in reality you just need a few command things, so potentially any old flash stick set to be bootable could do it. But i am pretty sure you can do it IN the old system, that is how i do mine. (mine being a bit different)

After restoring the image, I'll use DiskPart on the command line (in WinRE) to reassign drive letters

That way, I shouldn't get "The parameter is incorrect" errors

But the letters change ? i do not know why , but it does fix stuff for the boot part easy.

The SSD got drive letter D: but the HDD uses C:

This happened after i BCD edit then boot to it,

When I tried to delete the drive letter assignment for the old drive, everything broke, even WinRE

I changed the boot order in the UEFI settings to boot from the SSD before I did this

I'd rather have no dependencies on the original hard drive at all during boot

That bay is limited to drives with 7mm z-height, so swapping drives is not an option

But the idea is the same. For me i just clone the parttion, and from the original system click on a shortcut (batch), it fixes the BCD. anytime after that i can remove either drive , or boot menu to either system.

Note the system image backup includes the UEFI system and WinRE partitions
