12:04 AM
...
this question makes me feel old
6
Q: Which kind of hard disk is this? (picture attached)

OleDidMy girlfriend has an old laptop-drive she wants me to grab data from. I want to buy a usb-adapter for it, but I have no clue as to which kind of disk this is. There are no text printed on the drive except from "Made in China" and "F4". The hard drive's size is 7 cm x 9,5 cm excluding the pins. I...

12:35 AM
Anyone wanna buy like... 1000 HDD platters?

2:45 AM
@Bob Yeah, pretty sure that's PATA. I remember fiddling with those annoying master/slave jumpers back then...
Had a bit of a scare earlier today. I was fiddling with a stripped USB cable, using it in conjunction with a high-amperage supply to power a high-drain load. The cable was acting up, intermittently dropping power for whatever reason. About 20 seconds in, I noticed smoke and freaked out before I saw that part of the wire insulation was melting. Needless to say, I immediately disconnected the wire and threw it out.
It was a very cheap, low-quality cable that was never meant to handle 2+ amps of current. Before I cut off the Micro-B end and stripped it, devices never really were able to draw more than 500 mA or so through it.
Apparently, some strands of the wire broke, and when it did manage to connect, the resistance was so high that it melted the insulation where the wire was broken.

3:06 AM
That sounds like fun! I accidentally overcharge a li-on battery the other day to the point it started bloating.
Hmm... If I call one Powershell script from another, do they have their own variable scopes?
By the timestamp and size of my output files, you can tell the exact time I broke my script, and when I found and fixed the bug I introduced.
And also how many tries it took me to release what I had done.

3:21 AM
@MichaelFrank Yes, unless you dot-source the call
There are a bunch of scope prefixes you can use, though, if you want to control things more finely

Okay, maybe you can help then... I have a script that'll query a computer for it's local groups and their members, SIDs, etc.
I'm trying to call it from another script, but it doesn't seem to fire off. I'm not getting any errors though.

Sprinkling some Write-Host calls around should help you figure out where it's running to
Alternatively I hear the ISE has some debugging features

Okay, so it doesn't even launch the other script...

Can you share the parts that do the launching?

& C:\Powershell\Get-LocalGroup.ps1 -Computername $Path.Split("\")[2]

3:28 AM
Hmm, maybe try it without the & operator

Still doesn't fire the write-host that's inside Get-LocalGroup.ps1.
Could it be because it's written as a function?

And you're sure it's reaching the call line?
@MichaelFrank Yeeeeeep
Executing a function declaration will just define the function, not run it

oh. derp. Of course.

Heh, that's tripped me up too

In that case, I dotsource and be careful of variable names....

3:33 AM
Alternatively you could leave it as a function, dot-source the other script at the beginning of the main one, then invoke the function instead of calling the script

:))))))
I feel like Anakin Skywalker right now.

3:47 AM
...well, kind of. It's calling the script, but I feel like there's something else going wrong now.

2 hours later…
5:43 AM
Helloooooo

I finally got to 80 flags on Super Users! :)
@Rahul2001 Hey!

Okay, so, this is weird
I have an FAT32 disk that I would like to use to liveboot SUSE
But the ISO file is 4.08 GB in size
So I cannot copy it onto the drive?

6:36 AM
My day is drawing to a close, but some food for thought: tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-optane-raid-report,5060.html
> The array delivers a staggering 3,500 MB/s of sequential read performance from QD1 to 128!
However, it does seem to come at the cost of sequential write speed.
For read-centric workloads, it's abundantly clear 3D XPoint, at least in its consumer Optane Memory form, is lightning fast.
Write performance looks as if it's artificially limited given what the P4800X is capable of doing, but I suspect the real limiting factor is the controller having only one channel to the underlying 3D XPoint memory.
> You can't double click applications fast enough to place a heavy enough load on the device to reach high queue depths.
lol
> What steady-state conditions, Optane asks? It's as if Optane taunts NAND with its performance, and consistency is also impressive. Optane is a natural for RAID.
lol
This, my folks, is the future of high-performance storage.
Again, though, limited capacity and high cost means a reasonably-priced high-capacity 3D XPoint storage solution is not exactly happening soon. It'll be an enterprise/workstation/super-enthusiast product for a while.

Bob
6:59 AM
@Rahul2001 You can try. It'll probably fail.
Depends which GB you're using.

@Bob Probably 4.08 GiB (the value reported by Windows). It will not fit.
...night.

also depends if the tools unpacks the ISO
Rufus would do that

7:54 AM
morning

@bwDraco When their testing is 'how fast can we click on applications' i generallydiscard any testing they've done.
MOrning @Burgi

8:06 AM
@bwDraco for most applications, it's surely cheaper to load out max ram on am achine, (32Gb, 64?) and just load applications into cache

omg
why is it so hot?

@Bob yeah it failed
What am I even supposed to do?
@Burgi 41°C here, what're you even complaining about, I'm positively melting
That's 106°F

but who uses Fahrenheit?
my friend annoyed me last night
there is a thing on facebook saying all terror attacks take place on the 22 or 23 of the month
i think its one of those things where humans see patterns where there aren't any

8:21 AM
@Burgi Have to convert it for the damn Americans

@Burgi thunderstorms coming the weekend

Hi, can I ask a question regarding VPS/HVM Setup?
I am a web developer and until now I got used to Shared Hosting, where you get one/more domains and you have your packages pre-installed, i.e:

MySQL
PHP
cPanel/Plesk
I'm now expanding and I would like to evaluate for AWS or similar solutions, so that I can install NodeJS, ExpressJS, and whatever else I need.

At the same time I don't know enough about server security to start an AWS from zero, so I found out about Bitnami.com which looks great but iit let's you install 1 app (Node, Mysql, Apache) for each server... So you cannot have a server with Node AND mysql or Apache and Node, and so

last night, at about 10pm, I was putting the bins out and the drive was hot :/
ok i had no shoes on, but still
Hi @Mr.Web !

@Mr.Web this looks like a question that should be on the main site

It is, but it's also like..... opinion? product-rec?
So I told him to drop by here :D

Bob
8:28 AM
@Burgi not really. too broad.
"how do I secure a server" is what it boils down to

TBH TL;DR

@Mr.Web just spin up a VPS, change away SSH port from 22, disable password login and only allow public key login (also add that before), install apache2 and the packages you need (php has a couple packages, google "installing LAMP Stack <os>")
also install fail2ban and use something like cloudflare
that should be fairly safe

@Avery Ok! Where is that good?

@Avery @Avery what about the fact he's possibly introducing various exploits in code?

Like, Amazon? Google?

8:30 AM
@Mr.Web all pretty much the same

Up to you. I use online.net

OVH, online.net
so many good providers

@djsmiley2k AWS linux is weird

(i'd go with online or ovh.)

Bob
@Mr.Web security is your responsibility, not your provider's

8:30 AM
@Avery it's a little bit weird, yes.

@djsmiley2k What's OVH?

@djsmiley2k well, that could happen with cpanel/plesk too

Bob
that said, most distros' packages have reasonably secure defaults

@Avery yus, but less likely
the problem then is, who updates cpanel/plesk?
My point to @Mr.Web is that entire job roles exist around this stuff

If he needs to jail apache2 then... idk

8:31 AM
picking up as a web developer.... isn't easy, nor in some cases sane

@djsmiley2k that's what I'm mostly doing lately

If I need my car fixing / changing, I t ake it to a mechanic

server security and maintenence

@Avery do you hav a full time job yet?

Bob
@Mr.Web the best thing you can do is set up a local VM first, play around, figure things out... use snapshots to undo mistakes...

8:32 AM
@djsmiley2k no but I could use a recommendation
not having a degree is hard

@Avery Move to the UK and I'll get you a jorb
No one will have degrees soon here, because no one can afford it xD

#brexit!

@djsmiley2k on one hand erdogan, on another may...

@Avery lol

But yeah if anyone needs a remote worker then I'm willing to apply

Bob
8:34 AM
@Mr.Web it won't help you directly with security but imo you need to understand how the moving parts interact before you can really know what the attack surface is and what you need to secure.

I know which I'd prefer :D
@Avery gl with that. 10 years experience in the field of fixing anything and everything, still getting no where.
@Burgi #EatTheRich

Bob
@Avery on one hand person likely to kill/torture, on the other hand not... hmm. hard choice.

there were some dickheads driving slowly passed the arena, taking photos this morning

urgh

i was all "COME ON I'M LATE FOR WORK!!!"

Bob
8:35 AM
@Burgi how close are you?

@Bob the office is 5 minutes walk away

Bob
o.O
ouch

ouch

Bob
it just doesn't quite feel the same after, yea?
will calm down in a week or so though

tuesday and wednesday were weird but today feels back to normal

8:37 AM
OK, so basically I have to deal between "It takes a pro to setup a server" and "do it yourself and play with it"
I think I can stay in the middle of these 2
:)

@Mr.Web we use fully managed servers

Bob
@Mr.Web doesn't really take a pro, as long as you don't mind a bit of downtime in the event of stuffing things up :P
burgi and djsmiley rely on them for businesses purposes
for private use, it's not really necessary

@Burgi ok

Bob
for business, it's worth paying more $ so you lose less $$ from downtime

@Bob I am managing my customer businesses so... I think I should give em a pro-like solution or at least a mid-way solution
Ok I think i got it

8:39 AM
as a developer i really cannot be bother to mess about with servers 24/7 so we pay extra to our hosting company for a managed dedicated server

Bob
@Mr.Web Ah, that's a different story

@djsmiley2k you've gotta make yourself visible man

@Avery I've interviewed for Cisco.

Bob
in that case you'd either want to hire a proper admin (if you're big) or outsource (managed server, etc)

:D
visable enough?
Problem is, they now basically shutting down that whole.... part

8:41 AM
Ouch

Kind of a relief

yes

Thanks to IBM, Yahoo, and a few others, there's a big pushback right now against remote working
which is just retarded, 90% of jobs are going to end up remote tbh

we both know cisco switches suck

in 100 years we'll of moved back to proper small nuclear familys

Bob
8:42 AM
@Burgi what local time did it happen?

The enterprise gear is ok, but overpriced.
@Bob after a gig, 10pm, something like that

@Bob i'll talk after my meeting

Bob
ah
@djsmiley2k are you close too?

I was going to send the nintendo switch picture but lost it

Okay, this is super weird.
I have a new USB3 flash drive

8:47 AM
I have no usb3 slots
or devices

Which is detected in the USB2.0 port but not the USB3.0 port

oh
i thought you meant type C

What's funny is that I can boot from it from the USB3 port, it just isn't detected in Windows

huh

Even diskpart doesn't see it
Does anyone know what's going on?

8:48 AM
use arch

@Avery I don't have any either
@Avery heh, not an option right now
I'll probably get around to installing it eventually, but not now

Arch is mostly a meme tbh

@Rahul2001 drivers.
@Bob Nope

It is a good OS but the public view is weird

2 h 5 min (104.5 mi) via M6

8:49 AM
@djsmiley2k Whatdoido?

@Rahul2001 identify device via PCI ID, download correct drivers, dance
oh, in arch you can't see it?

He's on windows

@djsmiley2k :/ how do I find the PCI ID?

identify device via PCI ID, download correct drivers enable in distro specific fashion, dance

Try to find drivers for the usb Controller too maybe

8:51 AM
device manager -> check for the unknown devices

@Rahul2001 device manager

check the PCI ID's, find appropriate drivers
<dance>

@Avery Checked already

Tks guys
Ciao!

Not detected from usb3 port, usb2 tells me that latest drivers have been installed when I try to update
@djsmiley2k ^

8:55 AM
@Mr.Web good luck
come back and let us know how you get on :)

Oky doy
ciao

@Rahul2001 yus.
Does device manager show any unknown devices?

@djsmiley2k no, I don't even hear the Windows sound when I plug it in

you won't hear anything if it's not installed...
k, not showing any unknown devices is odd
is it disabled in bios or something weird maybe

@djsmiley2k yeah
@djsmiley2k Other USB 3 drives from the same manufacturer work on this port

8:58 AM
@Rahul2001 Don't try use windows update. Identify the devices and manually get the newest driver.

Actually, this drive worked once yesterday from this port.
I have no idea what's going on, this is absurd

dodgy connection?:/

Nope, other USB drives work

I like i never had to deal with drivers on linux ever
Once.

@Avery This is my first time and me no likey

8:59 AM
And that was for ntfs-3g
@Rahul2001 i messed a ton on windows

@Rahul2001 wait
i thought you said this was windows. I'm so confused.

13 mins ago, by Rahul2001
What's funny is that I can boot from it from the USB3 port, it just isn't detected in Windows
It's windows. Probably.

lol

It is Windows

ok
in device managewr, what's the PCI device of your root usb hub
(maybe more than one)

9:02 AM
@Rahul2001 Pendrives usually aren't fast enough to beat USB2 speeds tbh

@Avery hmmmmm while true, not an answer :P

Well X-Y problem

@Avery these SanDisk ones are pretty good.

I didn't have too many good experiences with sandisk tbh
Then again I avoid them lately so idk

@Avery They have been working well for me recently

9:04 AM
I had a drive self destruct for copying a file over 4gb to it

I used to avoid them too, but eh

@Bob it was at 2230 ish local time

@djsmiley2k Which one? :/

well there's your 3.0 hub
(the intel one)

yup just get the pci id

9:07 AM
8086...somethingsomethingsomethingsomething

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C26&SUBSYS_397817AA&REV_05
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C26&SUBSYS_397817AA
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C26&CC_0C0320
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C26&CC_0C03

Is that the same 8086 as the ooold compatibilty one?
(Aka intel 8086)
(or my favorite 8088, that's fun to read)
(I should learn the assembly of that)

(I mostly dealt with 6502 asm myself to date)

@Avery all Intel devices are PCI ID of 8086....
Dear intel, why do two devices with the SAME PCI ID have 2 drivers for the same OS's D:
Looks like you want the C220 one @Rahul2001

9:22 AM
@djsmiley2k Hm, Windows10 isn't in OS list, but I'll try...
Ew, their website uses MD5 hashes for downloads
@djsmiley2k failed to install

k, so did that laptop ship with win10?
tho the chipset isn't listed either

9:38 AM
@djsmiley2k 8.1

@Rahul2001 tbf md5 isn't bad for integrity checks
it's, however, bad for password hashing

@Avery hm?
Oh, ok then
·_·

9:54 AM
:)
it's easily cracked
So... it's not great for anything actually

Damnit, calvin is dead

as i could be a MitM, presenting a 'fake' driver file, but if I am, I can also just present a fake MD5 too whcih matches.
So all it's good for is verifying the download matches the hash, it doesn't give any inherient security to the download not being screwed with.

@djsmiley2k https ftw

1min silence at 11

10:07 AM
@Rahul2001 did you check the url of tht link, and compare the cert, and check the issuer~?
or did you blindly trust it?
because if i registered lntel.com and got the cert for lntel.com would you ever know?
hah urgh, in the message box you can't tell the difference between l and I, but you can once you send it

10:21 AM
@Burgi heh that worked.

10:48 AM
lol Ubuntu is so confused

hiya
how are you all
@djsmiley2k Yet, it's the least confusing OS out there

depends on your PoV.
ubuntu as a distro is still a mess, tho much improved.
I mean Concanical or whatever they're called
One minute they think the future is desktop and only that, next minute they're only pushing servers again

So I want to review a product I purchased through Amazon, but I can't find the page to do it. So I type "review a product" into the search bar.
And, I'm obviously not alone
Now, guess what happens when you make that search :P

go to -> my orders -> historic orders -> find the item -> click the 'review this item' button
or see the email amazon sent you asking for a review
or the one that the seller also normally sends
