@JourneymanGeek sorry, I asked the question before, and someone answered so I thought it was fine.

@satibel if it's a casual "I'd like to chat about..." Then it can be okay. Simply coming in to get attention on your questions isn't.

you'll see I'm not just posting my question if you look half an hour up ^^
but I'm stuck and I thought someone here might be able to help.

It can take a bit of time for answers to come in
Make sure you've included all your research in the question, and be patient :)

1:21 PM
[sarcasm]
BUT I AM PATIENT, NOW SERVE ME MY ANSWER, SLAVE!

o.O
you should consider retiring your win2k3 box

@Burgi I consider it, but windows 2012 doesn't work either, and I can't touch the config of it because it is managed by a contractor.

Hey look at my question

my question is amazing
give it a lick
`hmm it tastes like raisins.`

#PCMasterRace

1:29 PM
@TOWMN whats it like being back in edinburgh?
this chromebook says it has a gyroscope in it, what on earth for?

@Burgi so that it knows which way "up" is

don't accelerometers do that?

Does is specifically say gyro or accelerometer or both?

both
> Other perks included stylus, 720p webcam, accelerometer, gyroscope

Gyro is probably better at detecting fine rotational movements, likely for parking a spinning rust disk or playing games where you rotate it.

1:38 PM
gyro is probably the same as the thinkpads, to stop the disk when you transport the pc.

i think it is a solid state drive
HDD 32GB eMMC

Of course it is possible that the gyro/accelerometer are the same device, just handled differently in the drivers.

oh, ok, so games probably.

@satibel just because that version has solid state disk doesn't mean that that isn't what it is for, other versions might have spinning rust and it might not cost any different to have the gyro fitted on all of them

the overlords are listening!
i have a theory that it is doughnut shaped to help focus the governments mind control rays
and its the ideal shape for listening in to trumps phone calls

1:55 PM
> From GCHQ to the Apple campus, huge disc-like buildings are popping up around the world. As artist Simon Denny warns, they betray a world with no corners in which to hide

THEY FOCUS BRAIN WAVES!!!!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ?
> The connection has timed out

i'd forgotten about apple's brainwave machine

@satibel i added a comment on what to check
as you've not really provided much useful infomation so far (hense the likely lack of responses).

@Bob that Indian coffee company with the stock art

2:00 PM
@Burgi why would you want to listen in on trumps phone calls ... sounds like cruel and unusual punishment imo

someone on fox news said it had happened so it must be true...

@djsmiley2k well, if the server can answer requests from the LAN the port should be open, right?

@satibel only internally
the router may still be blocking things
and i presume you mean the openvpn server is responding on the lan?

yes openvpn, and the test webserver

ok
so the problem seems to be your router
in perticular, firewall / portforwarding on the router
So go to shieldsup.com and do the test, for the port you're running openvpn on (1097 iirc by default)

2:07 PM
when I have openvpn and the http server on my windows 7 pc, and I switch the ip in the NAT it works
@djsmiley2k did you mean GRC.com ?

yah that thing
@satibel weird
you say the server is listening on 'all' the ip's
you got multiple ips assigned to that server?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't remember :(
oh it works now
must be the nightly cleaners unplugging the servers maintenance

@satibel is your router set to forward UDP packets?
normally you'll choose udp or tcp when port forwarding

@djsmiley2k both, both is good.

both works too.
so did shields up show the port being open?

2:17 PM
@djsmiley2k I didn't put an exception on openvpn, so it should listen to any inbound traffic.
it says Stealth

So it's not responding at all
try setting openvpn to use tcp and try it again?
or maybe restart the router
wouldn't be the first time i've seen them requiring a reboot to get rules to kick in

the router was restarted 3 times already
and the http server uses tcp
so no tcp problem

also tried telnet
@djsmiley2k +1
but I'm pretty sure it's a song
-NO IT'S A SANDWITCH

@djsmiley2k yes, it is

I suffer from ptsd :/

@djsmiley2k from waking up and realising you are 30?

lol no
from years of mental and physical abuse.
heh, didn't expect that did you? :P

you chose to get married ;)

lol not that either
going in the right direction age wise tho

2:29 PM
i felt old this morning
i only got 3 or 4 hours sleep due to worrying about this 4LA thing at work

:/
this is why we build brick houses.... heh

(h/t MSE)

@djsmiley2k preschool teacher? ;p

2:44 PM
haha

@djsmiley2k my bad, it 's tcp that was in stealth, not udp.

yeah not sure you can test udp actually
as it doesn't expect a response

No "Happy Birthday @Sathya" on the wall?
What has this place come to?!
Happy Birthday @Sathya :)

@OliverSalzburg YOU COMPLAIN. YET YOU NEVER ACTUALLY SAY IT SO WE CAN STAR!
nominates @OliverSalzburg for demodding

2:57 PM
:(

SO, do you feel oppressed?

Extremely!

Bob
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
$400 for a pair of ubiquiti pro APs
anyone here used one? :P

@Bob old workplace did
they're pretty nice
also, a bunch of the comms rooms folk like em

@Bob Yes
We use those exclusively for events
And I have a UAC-Pro at home
AMA!

3:02 PM
how much can i pick up a UAC-Pro for @OliverSalzburg ?
and can i use it stand alone?
200 users?
errr yeah that's a bit over kill, me looks at the lite version

A bunch of techies should just get together and start an ISP which supports net neutrality if Trump's administration manages to get rid of it.

@Rahul2001 the incombants basically make it impossible.

There's a few ISPs in UK like that tho
There's even one that's specifically aimed at movie studios
@bwDraco ah yes.

My favorite might be U+1F609 U+1F93F WINKING FACE VOMITING.

water + electronics bad
2
and if you're going to do it, respect tradition and use a toaster.

@djsmiley2k Check Amazon
@djsmiley2k Yes

Bob
3:10 PM
@bwDraco I was going to call shenanigans on 5V, but then I saw the bit about him having the actual 120/240V charger body on his chest...
good lord, you'd almost have to be trying to mess up that badly
@OliverSalzburg how is it? range, reliability? is your home large and open, or lots of walls?

@Bob Best AP I've ever had

Bob
If I try em, I'd probably go with the lite ones... need 2 min to get decent coverage front and back
but I've got a decent asus one right now

Range is intense. My neighbor a couple houses over has same reception on my WiFi than on his own

Bob
RT-AC68U
technically I don't need more :P
@OliverSalzburg :O
how far is that in m?

I used to have 2 APs in my home, replaced them with 1 of the UniFi APs, covers the whole house and then some
@Bob About 50m I guess

Bob
3:13 PM
@OliverSalzburg oh, not quite that far then :P

ffs
'Our till crashes twice a day! - we reboot it and it does it again!'
/me checks uptime
205 days
-_-

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ideally I'd want some 35m coverage through several walls but that's a pipe dream
more practically I'd stick an extra AP for the last 20m and bypass some walls

@Bob Well, "same reception" means, he's got 4/5 bars

Bob
@OliverSalzburg at the moment I'm getting like 0.5 bars in the garage. but radio signals don't like brick walls
hm
lite and pro coverage shouldn't be much different, I'd hope

@Bob Honestly, I'd start with 1 of those APs. They are a lot more powerful than what I imagined

Bob
3:15 PM
looks like pro mostly gets 3x3 MIMO

If I could get coverage to reach my mother in laws house down the road...

Bob
@OliverSalzburg yea the decision is mainly $200 pro vs $100 lite
maybe start with a pro and expand with lite?

@Bob I've only worked with the Pro variant

Bob
@OliverSalzburg how do you manage it? dedicated hardware? or an app or summat?

I don't even really know the difference to be honest
@Bob They have this UniFi Controller application (Java)

Bob
3:16 PM
urk
hm

You use that on any device connected to the same network

Bob
apparently people have managed to install it on an rpi
I just so happen to have a spare one sitting on my network not doing anything... :P

Alternatively, they have this "Cloud Key" which is an embedded Linux PC thingie that runs the Controller software
Very neat for our use cases
Once you have configured it, you don't need the Controller anymore
Of course, you can also SSH into the thing and configure it raw :P
But I like the web UI

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I sometimes like to look at network stats :P
eww mongodb
> UniFi Cloud access is not supported on ARMv6 devices
o.O
dammit. I have a first-gen rpi
hmmm. maybe next year
need to take the time and redo the network properly

Just FYI, when you're looking at UniFi-related materials, if you only have an AP, your dashboard is pretty boring

Bob
3:20 PM
maybe remove a layer of NAT -_-

Bob
@OliverSalzburg EdgeRouter is the ... routing ... bit, yea? :P

A lot of the stuff where I went "Oh, that's neat" is only available if you really have a full setup of UniFi gear
@Bob Kinda, but those are not compatible with UniFi

Bob
ach.

Their Edge series is more heavy-duty and doesn't integrate into the UniFi ecosystem
The UniFi equivalent is the USG

Bob
3:22 PM
ah.

WARNING: If it worked that command would break Windows ... — DavidPostill 2 mins ago
lol

Bob
I hate when that happens
@OliverSalzburg thanks for the tip... looks like I might be skipping it for a bit at least till I can figure out which piece goes where :P

@Bob get an orange pi zero, it's 10 bucks

unifi-ap-ac-lr looks nice

Bob
@DavidPostill I'd almost suggest replacing that line with a screenshot to prevent shenanigans
btw that line as-is would probably do nothing unless you elevate
@satibel the whole point of putting it on the rpi would be to reuse hardware, not buy more hardware
I have plenty of spare processing power if I wanted to just chuck it in a VM

3:25 PM
@Bob He says in the question he's running bash as an Admin ...

unifi-ap-ac-lr - £100 here
Concidering I was looking at £70 for the 'fancy' netgears, these look far more professional
(tho I'd still have it in a cupboard prob...:/
it's on the list of nice things to have when one day i have money :(

Bob
@DavidPostill o.O
@djsmiley2k yea it's looking like 150 AUD here

@Bob then chuck it in a vm and use that rpi where it's gpio will be useful.

Bob
@satibel if i had somewhere I could use gpio, I'd have done it :(

like a christmas light

Bob
3:27 PM
but... yea. distinct lack of projects where it'd be useful

3d printer?
cnc?
clock?
programming arduinos?

@Bob I would highly recommend the APs. I'm still collecting experience with the remaining products in the line. We just bought a bunch of the other stuff and just had our first (very successful) deployment
I'm building a wall!

Bob
@OliverSalzburg the biggest issue is I kinda bought that Asus AP less than a year ago :P
replacing it now seems a bit soon
@satibel that means buying more parts! :P

I was fed up with the shitty dual-AP setup at my place, just went for it and bought one of the Pros and it's like night and day :P

Bob
not an 8-core ryzen, but plenty o' power for a permanent VM

3:34 PM
@Bob *scavenging old copiers.

Bob
Wunschpunsch (or Wounchpounch) is an animated series for children, inspired by the novel The Night of Wishes by Michael Ende. == Plot == In every episode, a wizard named Bubonic and his aunt, a witch named Tyrannia, must wreak havoc on the city in which they live or suffer a severe punishment from their supervisor, Maledictus T. Maggot. To be able to do so, they use an ancient magical parchment that, once utilized to activate a spell, said spell must be reversed within the next seven hours; otherwise, its effects will become permanent. To make sure the spells are reversed, Bubonic's and Tyrannia...

my switch is a pc with pfsense and 4 of these:
and 2 of these

Bob
wait. switch?
that smells more like router than switch :P

switch/ firewall
it acts as a switch

@Bob I've added an answer. Is my warning clear enough? ;p

A PC that acts as a switch? O__o
How much switching is going on at your place?

More likely a firewall/router
especially if it does wifi

> And over here is my fibre backbone to which all the auxiliary switches in my home connect to.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg probably not much, 'cause a PC can't keep up with full hardware switches

there's a bunch of old carcasses.

Bob
3:41 PM
ASIC beats general-purpose CPU every time

@Bob Good point

it's my lab

@Bob I was toying with a PFsense box at some point
much more elegant setup tho

Bob
yea, PCs make sense as a (low-throughput) router
can handle up to 1Gbit

Bob
3:42 PM
if you want to push 10Gbit you might start running into trouble
but not as a switch, blech
much more effective as a router only, hooked into a hardware switch

lol. gigabit swtiches are cheap

Bob
'course, if it works it works

it's most of the time 100mbps, because it does some tricks.

Bob
yea, it'd do fine for lightweight stuff, but not if you really wanted to push the bandwidth :P

like going a bit high in the application layer

Bob
3:44 PM
ya. so, router/firewall :P

but it doesn't connect multiple networks

Bob
o.O
hm. brexit is coming
good luck to the UKers in the room
come ot think of it, I think they're maybe the largest group in here these days o.O

layer 7 switch maybe x)

Bob
lol
that's taking managed switch to a new extreme
all we need now is a layer 8 'switch'

when your switch injects stuff in js files, what do you call it?

3:52 PM
@satibel "Not a switch"

Bob
^

the not a switch switch?

@Bob :-(

Bob
speaking of, you didn't head up to qld by any chance @TOWMN? youtube.com/watch?v=cW7oPxIpS1w&feature=youtu.be

@OliverSalzburg Eh, I had a PC acting as a pfsense router, which is far more common than just a switch, but er... yeah
@Bob No but I did get interviewed by some blonde woman from C9 news
Australia is far too big to explore in 10 days

Bob
3:55 PM
@TOWMN O_O

I shall come back and try again for 10 months
Not sure if I should apply for a visa now, or in 10 months time though. Need to check if the validity starts when it gets issued or when I first enter the country
@Bob Egads, every second I watch makes the guy seem even stupider
10 cups of goon.... and bragging to a girl? -_-

@TOWMN The last router I built myself ran on "one disk router"

though my not a switch switch behaves like a switch, it just might alter some data that goes to it.

Used to run from a single 1.44" floppy

@Bob even if you and I ran for mod in the next 4 hours, we still wouldn't have a primary :P
you, me and TOWMN would all have to run to get to 11 and have a primary

3:59 PM
"Most of the country thinks you're the stupidest person around right now, what's your response to that?"
"I'm not really"
@Bob... where do you find these people...
... narrowly escaped a darwin award that guy

I like running randomly through negative id users

Oh hey I can play the new Mass Effect Andromeda now

Bob
@TOWMN just a preview, wasn't it?

@Bob Well, full game for 10 hours

@TOWMN on telly last night was some female from edingburgh, via thailand, getting refused entry to Aus :O

Bob
4:02 PM
I want to see Clippy

@djsmiley2k Was she cute?

Bob
How do I see Clippy
...dammit. cbf looking up the regex right now
water + electronics => dead electronics, not too bad
water + mains electricity => dead person, very bad

How do I see Clippy?
Huh

I wonder if Clippy has gone AWOL

4:03 PM
I want to see Clippy.

/(?:^|[.!?:]\s+)(?:(?:how\s+(?:can|do)\s+i)\s+([^?!.:]+)\?|(?:i(?:\s+want|(?:\s‌‌+am|'m)\s+(?:wanting|trying)|'d\s+like|\s+would\s+like)\s+to\s+([^?!.:]+)(?:$|\‌.|‌!)))/i

Clippy? WHY can't I see you?

I haven't seen him for a while

I want to know how to see Clippy.

I need help finding clippy?

Bob
4:04 PM
How do I summon Clippy?

Yep, that works for me ^

Bob
\o/

How do I summon Clippy?

Bob
@satibel ^ try saying one of those

Bob
4:04 PM

Bit late for that now...
@Bob lolol

Bob
we need to work on this timing thing :P

Great minds think alike?
So insurance company who repaired my phone did a botch job
Like everyone else
Why can't anyone repair a phone properly in this country?
> 0.3 Anti-explosion Tempered Glass Screen Protector Guard For Samsung Galaxy S5
Ermm I think you got some issues if you needing anti-explosion glass protectors for your phone

Bob
@TOWMN That's why they need the glass!

@TOWMN Does it work if the battery explodes? ;p

4:13 PM
Oh yeah I think my laptop bluescreened yesterday cause my SSD overheated
> Try Top Up today and get an extra £5 when you Top Up £100 or more.
Huh, 5% off Amazon
@Burgi Cold and wet, as always... hailstones today

> my laptop bluescreened yesterday cause my SSD overheated
wut.

@TOWMN are you back in a hostel?

Shouldn't SSDs throttle at high temperatures?

@Burgi Yup

are you looking for a house/job now or still hiding?

4:18 PM
@Burgi Looking for an Australian visa
50-50 on whether to go now, or get a job and save for 10 months before going
I may or may not get paid more in Australia anyway

@TOWMN who is the girl next to @Bob?

@Burgi Last I checked that wasn't a fox

you never know...

@Burgi Don't you mean who is the fox(y girl) next to the wallaby? ;)

yeah of course i meant that! ;)
blackadder had a girl called "Bob"...
plus this is the 21st century

4:24 PM
I suppose her name could be Roberta ...

4:38 PM
OK who the frick built a bloody gherkin on my airport runway

Bob

4:59 PM
ok so some idiot has actually put my email address in as their email on bank of america
i'm getting their statements
