@JourneymanGeek That's adorable! :D

@Bob @JourneymanGeek either of you (or both) want to begin playing a game sometime within the next 6 hours?

Q: Origin of "turn thrice widdershins"

bwDracoI've seen "turn thrice widdershins" (or variations thereof, such as "turn around thrice widdershins") several times online (1, 2, 3). It seems to be Gaelic in origin, having to do with fairies, but I can't find any concrete information about where this phrase actually came from or how it's signif...

Bob
@allquixotic urk... I'll have to check but today's probably not a good day

@bwDraco Look into something called the "Wiccan Rede Poem" several versions, but IIRC one of them uses that phrase, if not most/all.
Been many moons since I sung it, and it may not be there, but it sounds very familiar.

Checked several variants; "widdershins" and "circle thrice" are present in all cases, but not in the same verse.

Is sounds Gaelic, true enough, but 90% of neo-pagan material is created, not truly ancient. So, if found in such a source, I'd be inclined to look further anyway.

@GypsySpellweaver I just woke up, it's 8 AM :P

@Rahul2001 Funny clocks in that part of the world? I thought all the world ran on my time!

@GypsySpellweaver It's got something to do with the world rotating, I hear.

@Rahul2001 :D No wonder I've been dizzy lately.

@GypsySpellweaver That's probably the alcohol :P

@Rahul2001 Can't be. Ain't had none since "International Get-Drunk Day"
Coffee maybe, though

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver I keep telling you people to stop living in the past!

@Bob it would be cool if we used this for a bot, but (1) porting JS to Python or Python to JS or linkage from one to the other = ow; (2) porting existing bot code or adapting the ChatExchange API to match the bot and IO APIs... ow
would eliminate (totally) the whole headless question and probably solve a bunch of bugs in the IO layer of Zirak chatbot though

@allquixotic or essentially rewriting it
@allquixotic not up for gaming today. Not feeling great today. Sinuses went a bit wonky

@JourneymanGeek sorry to hear that dude!

@allquixotic happens every so often. I also probably should vacuum my room at some point. Dust and me do not get along

yeah I'm in the same boat

A: Lenovo P50 is not booting from NVMe SSD

allquixoticDid you clone just the Windows partition, or the whole Windows drive? Also, did you clone any other partitions that are on the same HDD? Here's a very brief breakdown of what has to be done to successfully clone Windows (other than copying the Windows system partition), depending on the way it w...

I vaguely blame his backup tool for no particular reason
.... or drivers
tho win 10 should do NVMe fine

5:03 AM
IIRC Linux dynamically initializes every piece of hardware from scratch dynamically during boot by probing all the hardware and trying to load every kernel module, asking each one if it finds any hardware that it can use

NVMe is new tho. Some older/LTSes might not know what to do

but Windows, if you change the type of device it boots on, I'm not sure that it can accommodate that

likewise say windows 7. Or windows XP and AHCI/SSDs
hm.
Yeah

as recently as Vista, changing from IDE to AHCI or between modes of SATA would break things
reliably
SATA to NVMe is an even more dramatic change
in the case of Linux, if the drivers are available, it'd just use them.
not sure about Windows

5:05 AM
the system partition's storage drivers are a bit of a special case, regardless of the OS

and its not the easiest thing to test

here's the reason: the bootloader and the very early kernel boot has to be able to find, and load, a driver that can proceed to read the rest of the system partition

@allquixotic Still breaks things
@allquixotic Windows does that too

on Linux, the initial ramdisk (initrd or initramfs) is put in a place that the bootloader with its own drivers can read the initrd into memory, which loads all the modules the system kernel will need to mount the system partition
I think they load up initrd with just about every storage driver known to man, though I may be wrong

Apparently the "offiical" way to switch from IDE to AHCI to RAID or vice versa on Windows is to boot in safe mode, where it loads all the default drivers
Only reason it "breaks things" in normal mode is normal mode skips loading of drivers that weren't required at last shutdown
@allquixotic Very wrong (as demonstrated by the many many different guides telling you how to add additional storage drivers to the initrd in order to boot XY or Z configurations)

5:10 AM
@TOWMN ah, okay -- though are you sure it's not distro-specific? the initrd is created by a weak collection of shell scripts IIRC

Much like Windows it only loads a small subset of drivers in order to optimize loading time

in fact, it's explicitly customizable by the user on most distros

@allquixotic Well if centos, xenserver and ubuntu are affected I presume it's distro-unspecific

you could tweak it to ship every storage module if you really wanted

@allquixotic You probably could, but that'd take longer than just adding the one(s) you need

5:11 AM
I used to mess around with the individual modules being stuffed into initrd

Last I recall adding each driver required either adding one line to some config or one command line switch, there wasn't simply an option for "all"

in the early days of Kernel Mode Setting, the DRM KMS modules had to be manually added to initrd so you wouldn't get user modesetting when the graphics drivers loaded
so yeah, it's something that the user can play with, and conceivably a distro or a package for a distro could be made that'd just stuff everything you could ever need into initrd
but that would slow down your boot measurably on HDDs or the slowest 10% of SSDs or so
it would be wasteful to put modules into initrd that you don't strictly need for initializing the root filesystem, since, once the root filesystem is initialized, you just read /lib/modules for whatever you need...
but conceivably you could need networking (yikes!) to initialize the root filesystem.
as well as any direct attached storage driver
which includes the USB subsystem and the thunderbolt subsystem if any

@allquixotic in theory ... PXE bootstrapping ISCSI...

Bob
5:48 AM
@allquixotic hm, it wouldn't be too terrible to get existing listen commands and most plugins working. it's a fairly well defined api
@allquixotic IIRC it can get a bit unhappy if the firmware reassigns IDs. I've had that happen with an accidental RAID to PATA switch.
The bootloader stores the volume and device IDs somewhere.

Friend is overdosing on antidepressants again. Not good. I'm assuming 5 to 8 pills a day isn't healthy?

Bob
@TOWMN huh.
ZFS must... add itself then
cause I never had to do that...
copy initrd to boot partition, set up efistub boot entry, done...
though iirc zfs's packages install something that writes initramfs too so it probably does do it automagically

Bob
@Rahul2001 have you tried asking medicaladvice.se's chatroom?

Its so wierd to see IBM on a system
@Rahul2001 anything not prescribed by a doctor is not healthy
I'm factory restoring one of these thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R51
seems really slow tho

5:58 AM
@Bob I didn't know that existed. Thanks!
@Bob Okay, the chatroom isn't used at all. Asked for help there on 18th Feb, the messages are still on the first page of chat with no response.

Bob
O_O
I... wha?
Huh. There actually is a health.se

Hm... Might ask on reddit or something.

Yeah, there is

Bob
@Rahul2001 ...you know, I was joking. Go with @JourneymanGeek's suggestion. i.e.: an actual doctor

Not everyone has as active a chat room as we do
As tempting as it is, we can't fix everything

Bob
6:05 AM
O_O
NSFCPU?

.... how?
I've bent one or two pins

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...when all you have is a hammer?
the imgur album is appropriately titled, too :P

"It'll buff out"

@Bob She won't. Or cannot.

Bob
didn't even notice the spirals
> ASUS Z97I Plus with bent pins Purchased very recently (13/2/2015) installed everything and it was working fine but had to make some changes and due to the small case (Obsidian 250D) I dismantled everything and ended up bending the pins.
... ... ... understatement?

6:09 AM
I suppose you could replace the socket
5-6 dollars on fleabay it seems. And a lot of specialised tools

Bob
@JourneymanGeek have fun soldering some 1000 connections :S

"specialised tools"
;p
you'd likely have to reflow it
hm, system restore failed
I should just yank the drive
Now it works <3

sigh
woke up late
made it into work 3 minutes late

No mouse. Why is there no mouse? ANyway, its wiped. Not my problem.

7:17 AM
@Rahul2001 depending on the antidepressants, she's lucky to be alive.
Is there no kind of social service you can ring ' this person is doing themselves harm' ?

@djsmiley2k Not here in India, no.

police?

@djsmiley2k No.
Cannot, not for such reasons.
Wtf why are the chemist shops closed

7:50 AM
because sunday?
:/
@Rahul2001 you're going to need to find out exactly what she's taken
'anti-depressants' doesn't help
the answer to that is 'Hospital, NOW.'

Pretty much

8:12 AM

I hate this "Community" user. It bumps up ancient questions to the top of the list.

user226528
Why is it doing that?

lol
So less loved questions get loved too
its old questions with no answers

user226528
"its old questions with no answers"
Wrong. They do have answers.

no selected answers

That's more like it.

Q: How can we make the purpose of Community "bumping" more obvious?

Shog9There's been a lot of confusion over the years regarding the automatic "bumping" of questions... Community ♦ should discriminate more when bumping unanswered questions Community ♦ seems to be bumping new questions more frequently than usual Should we close question that keeps being bumped by ...

is a good starting point

user226528
Oh, the purpose is obvious, alright.

user226528
It is the logic behind it that is flawed.

ah, as Obi Wan Kenobi once said
From a certain point of view

user226528
Correct me if I am wrong, but Obi Wan Kenobi is that comical moron from Star Wars, right?

@FleetCommand That would be Jarjar Binks

8:43 AM
For certain values of comical and moron, yes. In both cases.

user226528
Yes. Jar Jar. Then who is Obi Wan Kenobi?

@FleetCommand lmgtfy

._.
@FleetCommand Depends on the movie
Anyway, bumping gets eyes on older questions + probably helps gets things picked up by search engines (shhhh)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek no accepted or upvoted*
weird
I'm getting like one announcer badge a day
sometimes to questions I don't remember seeing, let alone sharing
wonder if someone is trying to game the system... and using my userid for whatever reason

Oo
@Bob or that.
I don't always remember the specifics :p

8:54 AM
What's announcer badge for o_O

user226528
@Rahul2001 You know that Googling it brings more question than answer, right? Here is what I get: "Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise, portrayed by Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor in the films. In the original trilogy, he is a mentor to Luke Skywalker, to whom he introduces the ways of the Jedi. In the prequel trilogy, he is a master and friend to Anakin Skywalker." Confusing as hell!

user226528
Actually, it would help if you guys make your points without quoting from cheap franchises and let the value of your words represent your point of view through merit.

Cheap Franchises?
NO RESPECT FOR THE CLASSICS!

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Yes. Bumping gets eyes on the question, which in turn brings about a sigh of frustration. Problems that can no longer be reproduced are like that.

user226528
How can I possibly help a guy with a problem in Windows 98?

user226528
9:05 AM
I can't.

@FleetCommand linky?

user226528
Alright, this is creepy! Clippy just popped up!

Let's see...

Aww shame

@FleetCommand the site didn't exist when win98 was relevant

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Oh, thanks! I will post an answer that says "Windows 98 is no longer relevant so to hell with your question." That's bound to get me millions of upvote.

9:12 AM
@FleetCommand or you can dig up a copy of windows 98 and try

user226528
@JourneymanGeek LOL. How many times did you do that?

... a few?
heck, I even pulled up an OS/2 VM (which I have somewhere still I think) in '13

A: Why can't old PCs view modern sites?

Journeyman GeekSimply, a lot of modern HTML features we take for granted did not exist back in those days. There are attempts to build 'modern' browsers for older OSes - classilla, for example. You can easily load up linux onto a suitable PII or PIII system and still be able to handle a basic modern webpage. ...

@JourneymanGeek Can always visit retro.hackaday.com

The point being, there's a reasonable chance, given enough eyes, someone could solve it

user226528
Not if the question is a 2010 question about connecting iPhone and Canon PowerShot IS to Windows 7. Where'd you get hardware that old?

9:18 AM
"get" ... no
people accumilate hardware
I just did a factory wipe on a 13 year old laptop

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Do you have tangible metrics? Some statistics that show the success rate of "Community" bumping questions?

@FleetCommand Not really
I'm a mod, not a CM ;p

hmmmm
'given enough eyes... reasonable chance'
yeah, but given enough CPU's there's a reasonable chance I can break SSL...

@FleetCommand That might make a good meta question on Meta Stack Exchange

9:22 AM

A: Is there any way to see which posts Community has bumped?

Shog9As of about a week ago, there's a new PostHistory record added when Community bumps a post: These are also in the Stack Exchange Data Explorer (PostHistoryType #50), so you can query and analyze the effects of bumping as much as you like (keeping in mind that there's no record prior to May 4t...

it's already answered...

that happens a lot ;p

:D
hense why i rarely post on meta :/

(which is why I stick to "soft" questions on meta)

@djsmiley2k Not really. It just says the data is available. Nobody has owned up to analysing it :)

ah ok
do all su meta questions get notified in chat?

ah, discussion, support or bugs

I think so

right well, hopefully that's most things :D

something like what @FleetCommand was asking about, I'd ask on main meta personally

yup
I'm just trying to be 'more active' on meta
but at the same time, trying to stay relevent

9:35 AM
I know what you mean
I'm trying to hit 10k on main meta ;p

I'm not gonna post something, unless i actually wanna know something.
and as I've said in my nomination, you guys are awesome and answer pretty much everything i ever need to know!

This election has been incredibly boring civil ;p
Heh, Peter Mortenson's Alt-Writing the election nominations ;p

:D
Grammar is his thing, clearly.
Mine is having the ability to even exist online with a 3yr old daughter and a 6 month old son.
:D
Also, if my biggest downfall in being a mod, is my grammar, I'm a happy guy.

lol
I had a mod complain about my spelling when I was a newbie
Jul 25 '11 at 3:59, by nhinkle
@JourneymanGeek general request... could you strive to improve the formatting and grammar in your answers? You provide a lot of useful information, but often neglect things like capitalizing the first word of a sentence, improper use of it's/its, etc, which are things that affect the quality of your posts. Those are all important factors, too :)

errrr ignore me
it's a question not answer, my brain is fired!

its not an answer
Yeah, people have suddenly been busy

soooooooooooo @JourneymanGeek can I ask you if you think I'd be any good as a mod?
If you don't wanna answer then don't btw!

@djsmiley2k I'd say in an election or two ;p

so about 8 yrs? XD

eh. I donno when the next election would be, it really depends on the workload
right now, I see something like 3-4 flags at a time
if it hits like say 10-15, people would go "maaaan, we need another mod"

10:06 AM
/me starts flagging
xD

Literally at some point someone goes "Hey guys, I think we need help" and if enough (all?) mods agree, we go to the CMs and ask for more
or when a mod quits, that triggers off a discussion

that's cool

And well, from my perspective, meta performance is pretty much what you need to look at.

which sadly for myself right now is lacking
unless you mean reviews, flags, and such
in which case, I do what I can...

Well, as a mod, i do most of my meaningful work on meta
Even when I don't post, that and here're are good listening posts
oh god
Looking through old chat transcripts...

OOH
FOUND IT!

10:28 AM
Found what?

The first thing I have said on chat is... morning

Mine is 'Hi'

I also apparently lurked for 2 days before I said anything

@JourneymanGeek It's intimidating at first
Sometimes stays intimidating

@JourneymanGeek Is there an easy way to find your first chat post?
Never mind. I can see when I joined ... :)

10:36 AM
@DavidPostill Going to the last page of 'recent', which doesn't have pagination for some reason
'recent' being a tab in your chat profile

I look up the date I joined then work forwards

hmmm chat profile.
Is 'recent' meant to be a infinately loading page?

@djsmiley2k No, a list of messages that has pagination but no visible UI to change page number

oh, hahaha

I guess it could make sense if you try to justify it

10:46 AM
what's the pagination link...

@M.A.R. I always lurk first

Add &page=number to the URL, prolly
@JourneymanGeek I always lurk second
WTH @David. You don't even have 1000 pages of chat messages.

@JourneymanGeek It looks like I lurked for 9 months :) Joined 2014/12/04. First post 2015/09/01.

also, its easier to fuzz the transcript proper rather than using the recent page

10:50 AM
Oddly enough I was mentioned before I first posted.

ew that combines all chat rooms into a single log :/
@JourneymanGeek how do i checj my chat join date?
2011-09-06
hmmm
@DavidPostill Someone summoning you? :D

My gut feeling tells me that my biggest competition in a mod election would be DavidPostill
@djsmiley2k Doesn't look like it ...

wow I was around so much before everyone else o_O

@DavidPostill How do you find your first message?

My gut feeling tells me that my biggest competition in a mod election would still be DavidPostill. This is 2017.

10:54 AM
@Rahul2001 Searched for my name. Went to the last page and poked around.

@djsmiley2k orly?

@DavidPostill That's what I did too

@Mokubai well not everyone, but some people :P

also, your transcript has your name at the time
@DavidPostill that was after the last election tho ;p

@JourneymanGeek :)
