@Rahul2001 hey man, could we unfreeze our old room?

@Nick ask @JourneymanGeek

 Room for Nick and Rahul2001

The place where @Rahul2001 and @Nick talk about random stuff. ...
Please??

@JourneymanGeek ^ will you unfreeze that room?

Give it some time. Not everybody is active all the time in this room (and JMG's icon/avatar is in the idle/dull mode)

He must be busy now. In the mean time, chitchat. So, how are things with your girfriends? have you added a third one yet?

Lol, nopeeee
@Hennes yes, okay :)

4:09 PM
@Hennes Since when is he JMG. Sounds like an obscure filetype.

JFIF-G ?

@Nick XD he's been called that for a long time

yeah was answering a meta question
lol
I was THE journeyman geek for about... 5 minutes after I discovered chat ;p

Right, idle again.
I'll leave you with this very realistic item:

4:16 PM
@bob: re keMMing. I got a post somewhere with netstat -rn. I had to clarify that it was not an m

@Nick in theory "Geek" is the proper short form (with journeyman being something like an adjective")
There's many geeks, this one is a journeyman geek

grumbles something about politics being evilish
pokes @JourneymanGeek

hi
@ThomasWard it is, kinda
but I can trust most of the folk here to handle it like adults ;)

I'm sure you know why I poked you :P

not really ;p

4:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek who was murdering who?

@JourneymanGeek How many lands have you journied to, Mr. Geek.

@Nick Room has been unfreezed, btw

A "journeyman" is a skilled worker who has successfully completed an official apprenticeship qualification in a building trade or craft. They are considered competent and authorized to work in that field as a fully qualified employee. A journeyman earns their license through education, supervised experience, and examination. Although a journeyman has completed a trade certificate and is able to work as an employee, they are not yet able to work as a self-employed master craftsman. The term journeyman was originally used in the medieval trade guilds. Journeymen were paid each day, and this is where...

Oh, so that's where that comes from. Well, the more you learn :)

4:51 PM
@djsmiley2k DuckDuckGo has been doing that for ages
With syntax highlighting

gratz them

I see the new administration's already taken their first act of power in performing a drive by modding silencing their critics and banning me from chat :-(

ah it's the ban evavsion bot

but if I did, you wouldn't be talking here

*whistles to @JourneymanGeek* Here, have some tea. *tosses a thermos filled with tea to @JourneymanGeek*

4:53 PM
also, amusingly
I WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE DOG WAS SUSPENDED

LOL

I wasn't aware, but not sure I care.
I do wonder what she's done now.

@JourneymanGeek Thanks

Lol, uh, okay

4:58 PM
@Dog @allquixotic looking at what happened...
er, would be a good idea to steer clear of politics for a bit

Dog
This happened :-P

Your message at the bottom explains everything

Q: If you're gonna talk Politics, you must respect those who disagree

Shog9This is sort of a follow-up to two past discussions: Toward a philosophy of Chat Does the Be Nice policy require SE users to "be nice" to people who are not SE users (e.g. public figures)? Over the past year, there's been an uptick in discussions of politics in chat. JUST LOOK AT THIS CHART! ...

is probably appropriate

our ex IT director has taken out credit cards under alias names

o0
@Burgi is that even legal?

Dog
Given said political figure's considerable disrespect for women, immigrants, and those who disagree... I'm not sure how much he deserves in return

@Dog eh. I really do mean the steering clear of politics thing
I know he's a polarising figure, but man, If I go to bed, and you get another flag...

Dog
5:05 PM
Politics didn't even come up until NotAdminDave posted a Twitter link mentioning it :-P
@Burgi As in Mr. Joe Bloggs?

@JourneymanGeek Dunno, but it's impressive concidering the checks you go through.

Dog
@djsmiley2k Well, sorta.

@Dog you mean when they don't bother because they can afford to eat it if it turns out bad?

Dog
The main/primary account holder goes through a lot of checks if opening a new account, but I can add any arbitrary person as an additional cardholder to my account with no checks

5:07 PM
But you're still responsible for said money?

Dog
@djsmiley2k I mean when I was younger I opened my first account with... well, no checks

bank account != credit card

Dog
They probably checked but all their checks came up blank because I didn't exist, and defaulted to automatically passing.

we aren't in america
No body gonna stop you give them money

Dog
5 mins ago, by Burgi
our ex IT director has taken out credit cards under alias names
We were talking about credit cards this whole time...

5:08 PM
Pretty sure my first bank account was opened a few weeks after I was born
How young were you that they were offering you credit cards?

Dog
@djsmiley2k Well I had some when I was 16 by lying about my age

for much?

Dog
By the time I was 18 I already had considerable credit history
Few hundred quid

pffft

Dog
They increased it to 3000 automatically

5:10 PM
I imagine that @Burgi's friend got them for a slightly higher limit :D
yeah they like doing that, I noticed
:/

Dog
Probably. But their checks didn't seem to find it odd that when I actually turned 18 my date of birth moved forward by two years -_-

I had a green bank book. With a squirrel on it.

Mine had a horsey

@JourneymanGeek xD

Dog
5:11 PM
(Yes, I do actually have records on my credit record of companies having me down as one person with two dates of birth and not seeming to care)

My wife had an account with a bank that closed down

@djsmiley2k o.o

Dog
Annoyingly on the "new" mobile chat when you're suspended it says "This room is read only" while giving no real indication of the actual reason
@Rahul2001 Eh, we have central funds that insure individuals against that
Everyone gets 30,000-ish protection per institution
@djsmiley2k I think the point is once he/the company had a relationship with the bank he could arbitrarily add any names to it without further checks, as I've had that happen to me as a private customer
I could probably get a credit card in the name of "My Cat" if I wanted to

@Dog Only if you claim within 8 years or something...

Dog
And use it to order stuff off Amazon
@djsmiley2k She didn't realise a bank she had money with went bust for over 8 years?

5:16 PM
that's the short story yes

Dog
:-o

The long version is it was an account her Grandma had put money into
had about £300 left
they went bust, grandma didn't know/realise/something else
about 10 years later grandma finds the book, gives it to my wife 'you can get this money out!'
yeah.... thanks :/

Dog
Oh. I see.
So not an account she was actively using then. And not a huge amount.

yup and yup
still, it happened :D

Dog
And yeah, statute of limitations and what not.

5:18 PM
@Dog it's uptp £75,000 for us (me and wife) but I can't remember why
might be because we own a house or something odd.

Dog
@djsmiley2k Joint account = two people's combined total?

yeah that might be why
the limit is per account, but upto a limit again

Dog
No wait

so 30k per account, upto 75k per bank or somethin weird

Dog
The limit's been increased to 75,000 for everyone
> The maximum levels of compensation are:

Deposits: £75,000* per person per firm (for claims against firms declared in default from 3 July 2015).
> Investments: £50,000 per person per firm (for claims against firms declared in default from 1 January 2010).
Home Finance (e.g. mortgage advice and arranging): £50,000 per person per firm (for claims against firms declared in default from 1 January 2010).
Insurance Business: there is no upper limit on the amount of protection. (for claims against firms declared in default from 3 July 2015)
> *From 3 July 2015, the FSCS will provide a £1 million protection limit for temporary high balances held with your bank, building society or credit union if it fails. Read our Q&As about temporary high balances for more information.
:-o that I didn't know
> Why is FSCS now covering temporary high balances when they didn’t previously?

The protection of temporary high balances is a requirement under the Deposit Guarantee Schemes Directive (DGSD). This standardises the protection of money held in banks, building societies and credit unions across the EU.
Oh hey, another benefit of the EU that might go away now...

5:29 PM
Ah ok \o/
So basically, when me and the wife had 100k+ in the bank while selling our house, we would of only been covered for 30k previously :O

Dog
@djsmiley2k yeah pretty much
Holy cow, 4G is so contested in the city centre right now my 150Mbps LTE service is barely managing 3Mbps
Must be how @Bob feels every day...
Also holy crap, looks like one of my operators just deployed 450Mbps LTE-A outside the city centre. This'll be exciting to test...

5:56 PM
love network saturation
sigh

Dog
Well it's actually 415Mbps but w/e
Wonder why it is at 4am on a Saturday morning when everyone else is partying I'm out doing hundreds of speedtests and network scans

6:23 PM
im just sitting here working on a sync process for the new dev environment i just setup and watching the cspan.

Dog
6:34 PM
I almost read that as I'm watching CPAN
I don't actually know what cspan is

news network not perl repo
funny though haha
=)

6:49 PM
are you documenting all this somewhere @Dog?

Dog
@djsmiley2k documenting what? My nerdiness?
Wooo. First time with two secondary carriers (3x CA). Not the best speeds but it starts at 190 and drops to 100-120 after a second or two so it looks like some sort of throttling or shaping going on. Or core congestion somewhere. Cause I've gotten 280Mbps out of this site with 2xCA in the past.

oui
the findings

Dog
7:05 PM
Oh
Not really. I thought about blogging it at one point but who would want to read a blog by a cat writing about a dog hunting out mobile transmitters
In other words

you'd be supprised.

Dog
You guys are my documentation! :-D

2 hours later…
9:46 PM
@JourneymanGeek That's alright; if SE wants to censor my speech, I'll happily trod off elsewhere to a place that doesn't, or host one of my own on my box. I don't think I was violating the "respecting the people who disagree" meta post at all because nobody was disagreeing; we were all preaching to the choir, letting out our frustrations about a (shared) political topic that's relevant to every citizen of the world at the moment.
Really strikes me as a politically motivated suspension, to be honest, but I'll leave it be and take my presence elsewhere for the time being.
Wouldn't bother me at all if it didn't seem that over time (I've been here since 2012) what the mods consider to be "the line" (which is not to be crossed) keeps getting moved closer and closer in the direction of censorship and away from openness.

10:16 PM
@allquixotic I happened to be in chat when the flags were raised, though I didn't handle the one that resulted in suspension
This is what we saw:
> Still time for an assassination attempt/coup
> You could assassinate him too. Quick reload rifles and all.
> if he didn't have a goon mob of at least 30% of the population, we'd be fine

@Shog9 He's left the room :/ I don't know if that is a permanent decision ...

@DavidPostill he'll still get notified
But... Yeah. This was the whole point of the post I put up a while back and featured network-wide. The situation in the US right now is a wee bit tinder-box-y; folks are less likely to see the humor in jokes about assassination when there are people out there saying the same thing and being totally serious about it.
I cleared out the rest of the conversation as quick as I could, and Journeyman took care of the suspension.

ouch
id probably feel the burn if i said that too.

To be fair, it looked slightly less trollish in context
There was a twitter post, and I think someone was quoting
But...

yeah, I wouldnt troll or repost that kind of stuff on public forums.
Oh well.. Mistakes happen, nobody's perfect I guess.
@allquixotic: You've been gone for almost an hour and I already miss you.

10:26 PM
yeah, I don't think anyone really thought it was a big deal
By the time anyone flagged, everything was a couple hours old, Journeyman had already been the voice of sanity, folks had moved on

This was from earlier
Its been a bad day, I guess. Wish everybody would cheer up and smile.

Just worth remembering that, in a given month, there are usually 80 to 120 users active - that is, talking - in this room, with more passively reading.
So... You ain't necessarily commiserating with your buds when you post something here, even if the only people talking at that moment are in agreement.

Amen
Strongly agree.

@Shog9 I'm surprised it's that many ...

You know what they always say... 'Dont ever talk about politics, sex, drugs, religion, and race'
In the workplace or elsewhere.

10:30 PM
@DavidPostill check out the activity graphs for the room - it's never dead. 24/7.

@NotAdminDave Let's all be boring and just talk about IT then - there nothings else left in life that's important :)

The Bridge, for comparison, has more messages... But also regular down-times.

@DavidPostill: I didnt intentionally flame it, i feel bad about the whole thing. I feel like I was partially responsible for that delete comment raid earlier in the room.
:-(

I feel bad as well. I wasn't really active in that thread (I pop in and out of the chat window every so often) and I'm unhappy to see @allquixotic leave - even if it is only (hopefully) temporary.

I was not there at the time.
Ignorance is bliss.

10:38 PM
@bwDraco In this case yes ... :)

@allq, don't feel bad about this. Please don't leave us.

+1 for me for forgetting to disable triggers in my database sync process im putting together.
I thought I was done!
^ burN :(, dont flame for my lazy spelling

11:41 PM
@Shog9 I'm a little confused - I thought the flags had been dismissed and I thought I'd have been informed that folk were suspended

@JourneymanGeek They were, and you caught the suspension on Dog. Apparently we all missed that allquixotic got a flag validated (and thus, suspended) as well.

I caught it cause dog has an alt account and broke the rules. And it does feel rather unfair in context.
@allquixotic ehhhhh. Don't go. Emotions are high, flags were missed, things were said.
Personally, if it was the sorta driveby flagging I think it was, that's the sorta chaos they want.
And erf. Someone tweeted it?
