12:06 AM
oookay. that... wasn't a great thing to wake up to.

No it was not.

Bob
@allquixotic was it a mod suspension here? flag suspensions are... fairly easy to get
all you need is enough people on the network (ten of hundreds/thousands) to disagree with you, plus an emotionally-charged topic... bleh
I actually suspect @Shog9's meta post might've unintentionally amplified the flagging effect, because more people will probably mark as valid if it goes near current-US-politics.

@Bob no, just flag suspension

Bob
Last I checked, lots of (most?) 10k users who might handle flags don't even know there's an auto-suspend. when there are better ways to handle "hey let's avoid that topic", especially one hours old

it was mod-handled anyway

Bob
12:19 AM
maybe a bit of "that offends me" for some people, "that's probably offensive to others so it's valid" for others and "I saw a meta post about no politics so it's valid" for the rest
@Shog9 sounds like it would've been fine if it were only mod handled

@Bob there's the thing, it ain't like the messages flagged were the ones even discussing politics - for example, the guy who posted "There's a way to get rid of President Trump without impeaching him, and it's called the 25th Amendment" didn't get flagged.
The only messages flagged were the ones talking about assassination, which looked - especially out of context, especially grouped together - pretty bad.
So you got a mod somewhere, looking at this list of flags, and asking himself... "is this fine?"
And to be perfectly honest, that's most of what's been leading to the problems with politics.
(in chat)

@Bob it was not

It's not like folks discussing the potential issues for tech workers due to Ajit Pai's FCC take-over are getting flagged.
It's always just someone venting, or posting cringe-worthy meme pics, or venting by posting meme pics.

We love cats

12:35 AM
I like Bob.

Bob
@Shog9 ah. tbh I skimmed the convo but I didn't recall quix promoting assassination
and of course viewing deleted is a pain on mobile

Dog
12:52 AM

@Bob he wasn't. His was the "goon mob" comment.

Dog
@JourneymanGeek To be fairI wasn't even informed of the suspension, on my mobile it just says "This room is read only" so I had to check.
But er, yeah. I feel guilty for quixy being gone, it was probably my fault. It always is.
@allquixotic don't go :-( Blame me!!!!

@Dog eh. It always is :p

Dog
@Bob Yeah, there's a meta post about that (flagging old content being against the point of the system)
Apparently flags are meant for situations where someone is being disruptive and the auto-suspend being there to stop an ongoing situation from continuing, not for going back and rage-flagging disagreeable content, offensive or not, that has already past or stopped.
Apparently if I said something bad like "f*** you all go die ********ers" and nobody was here and it was followed by "3 hours later..." it's not supposed to get flagged. But it almost certainly would.

Q: Disallow flagging chat messages from the transcript as offensive

badpChat is an instant medium. What's past the first two screenfuls is water under the bridge, off to the transcript to collect dust and very very little google juice. Chat flags are supposed to be an instant moderation solution to instant messaging problems: broadcast problem messages as fast as po...

Also... 30 minute auto-suspension? When I logged on and checked I had 42 minutes to go.. dunno if it was meant to be 60-minutes or more or just 30 minutes per flagged message

it was 30 + 30
I saw @allquixotic on 31

Dog
1:00 AM
Ah

@Dog I don't want to go "its all your fault, you should have known better"
If this sorta thing goes wrong, in a sense its cause I failed

Dog
Hey we stopped when you said lets not talk about murdering people

Yup, but look at the fallout
I have an unhappy core user

Dog
Flags should only be routed to moderators for the site to which the room is attached and context should be provided with the flag. — Iain Oct 11 '14 at 11:40

who, IMO didn't do anything massively wrong

Dog
1:02 AM
Eh apparently this whole misuse of flags has been concerning users for years, and is part of the system

Anyone here good with bluetooth?

And my first impulse when you started on that assassination talk was to delete it and ask people to move it over to another room.
but that's not how I do things

anyone :(
I'm starting to hate Windows more and more D:

@David dealing with moderation issues at the moment. Its not a good time. If you could ask a question on the main site...

ahhhh ok
will do

1:05 AM
@Dog here's a scary thought. The way I do things only works cause I expect people to be rational.
2
Drive by flags arn't. People breaking out into arguements arn't

Dog
@David Yes
@JourneymanGeek Well there isn't really an issue. We're just chatting casually about the aftermath.

But, if RA's the pub where everyone knows your name, we just had someone throw a brick through our window cause the music was too loud. And then the landlord yelled at us. And its the poor barkeep who has to sweep up the glass.

@NotAdminDave i've had a lovely day

@Dog the aftermath is a moderation issue

@JourneymanGeek probably not, we have had to inform the finance director

Bob
1:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek in this case it looks to be almost a textbook example of a well-handled case...

@Bob almost

Bob
"please stop discussing X" worked for the immediate conversation

we also discovered that he abused the shengan zone to smuggle his girlfriend into the UK

shenanigan zone?
@Bob yup.

lol

1:10 AM
on the other hand it seems that it wasn't sufficient

flew his girlfriend from canada to ireland then caught a ferry from ireland to the UK

Man did it rain hard today
has anyone watched the series "Aftermath"? I always thought that english lessons came after math :-)

Should I have pruned that conversation? I'd still have missed what quix said.

i should say "alledgedly"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek maybe? :/

1:12 AM
And here's the thing
Every time we lose or potentially lose a person who's a chat regular, over a minor thing I could have handled, I consider it a failure.

why would you have credit cards under aliases?

Dog
@Burgi Errr

Bob
seems like slapping a bandaid on a issue with the chat system

Its not about handling the troublesome ones. I generally can get @Dog on a leash for example ;p

Dog
You can never leash a cat!

Bob
1:14 AM
wasn't there discussion on min consecutive (or recent?) flags before suspend?
seems to have gone nowhere :/

@Dog no you stick polystyrene things from packaging on them and giggle insanely

Dog

We in the US do live in a country where it is our duty as citizens to abolish the goverment , and we have freedom of speech to say what we want about the government. but you still cant say That , without getting on the no fly list.
Which means your stuck In the country :-)

Dog
I was accosted by a cat while out doing speedtests
Also, I should go out and do more speedtests. I want to have a new speed record to make @Bob jealous with :-(

@Dog who is the human stood next to you?

1:15 AM
@Burgi more importantly where's his phone?

Dog
@Burgi Some random stranger I found to give me pets

unless cat has a selfie stick they've got stuck to their ear.

@JourneymanGeek they have catcams on collars

Dog
@JourneymanGeek You gotta do what you gotta do...

@Bob there's been a whole lot of suggestions to improve flagging, but eh.
I didn't see any flags.

1:17 AM
could we just brush the whole politics/flagging stuff under the carpet?

along with the global outrage :-) i mean hey were trying here .

@Burgi sorry about that.

Dog

so you call yourself @Dog ironically? ;)

@Burgi or maximum confusion ;p

Dog
1:30 AM

@Dog we arn't imgur tho ;p

texans: unable to use rain macs

and yeah, thanks for the reminder. ;)
"rain macs"
THATS A PONCHO. And if it was really big, it would be a poncho villa....

Dog
I've never used a rain mac
I don't even know what it's supposed to be
@Burgi Flagged!

oh oh, on the radio news, samsung has said that the reason thier phones could be used to start a BBQ , is because (get this) the Battery was too Large.
I guess if samsung lovers wanted an out, that is it, sorry we were trying Too Hard to give people what they have been begging for.

Dog
lol
Didn't some independent company come to that conclusion weeks ago?

I would hope that samsung paid an independant to make the statement , geesh it is not like they could afford to admit anything.
Im not paying for it. So a few phones caught, i still want a Nuclear battery

Dog

another rememberance. Former president Clinton, only ever sent One e-mail during his terms. Because it is known to become public record. So why hillery gets herself in deep with it, wimin :-)

Tired of buying compressed gas dusters? Get this instead, it'll pay for itself in less than a dozen cans of "canned air": amazon.com/Metro-ED500-DataVac-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW

3:53 AM
Wibbles

4:21 AM
@bwDraco I dont have use of my air compressor anymore, had to go with the cans, and they are worthless compared to a jetstrem comming out of a 100PSI compressor. this weeks problem was they get cold and Slow before even getting parts of a computer dusted.
I also got one of them tiny air blowers that takes a BBgun CO2 cartriage. Finnaly some juice out of it , specially for how small. but it is empty very fast. that thing would be good to clean say a phone 1/2 way :-) nice bursts , terrible longevity
also got one of them "Gift Box" mini vacs (aa battery type). such a mean thing to do to people trying to buy a gift for geeks. it couldnt even get the first piece of food out of a keyboard

Dog
@allquixotic :-D

if only gas stations (petrol) would still have air , real air not 25c air comming out of a $10 compressor with a coinbox.

I'm one of those people who owns just about every piece of software under the sun; I actually own a very efficient piece of software for making short little clips (like dog barks or cat meows) into songs, it's called Celemony Melodyne
don't currently have anything to do with it but I've done it in the past

Dog
4:31 AM
This cat's going to be unconscious for a while

I could make an Ash song if I had a clip of him barking

Dog
If I don't come back it's because drugs are bad. Don't do drugs kids.

@Dog OK!

Dogs dont do drugs, so you must be worried about your surroundings?

4:44 AM
@allquixotic ash has a rediculous vocal range.... And a dislike of cameras :p

@JourneymanGeek HA! just like my cat, then: turn on a voice recorder, even a VERY stealthy one, and she shuts up
turn it off, and "mah! mah! mah! mah! mah! mah!"
I can usually coax her to talk -- without a recorder on -- by stooping down low and looking at her, talking in a high-pitched voice and moving my hand over her like I'm about to pet her
but if I have my iPhone even on a nearby ledge recording, she won't say a word

Yup. That's why most of my images are of him eating or sleeping.

Bob
@bwDraco Last I heard, those weren't particularly powerful?
also 120v, bleh

5:03 AM
@Bob america!
@allquixotic he ranges from excited snauzer squeak, to convincing people we have a big dog hidden away somewhere
to "boof"

5:22 AM
hello

@Bob I keep forgetting that America is a minority in this room.

my dog likes to pose for pictures, but he clams up to when the recorder turns on.
what if that means it could be easily decrypted?

There's a 220V version of this product.
Good night. I'm not allowed to stay up at this time.

5:30 AM
The secret dogs and cats have kept for centuries, they can talk to humans, but know that would be the worst thing that could ever happen to them.
remember that time your cat went missing? He was about to tell you :-)
Mr Biggs :Look here fluffy, none of us are going to give up on a good thing. Do you have any concept what would happen if the humans knew?
Lefty (the siamese) show fluffy here how important it is.
Now were going to let you go this time. but if you even try to open your mouth about this again . . . Well remember what happened to Ralphey? The car ? Yea it isnt pretty.

5:58 AM
Somebody remind me. What that windows technology that allows you to prevent specific applications from running. Its like AppGuard or something like that. (no; I am not talking about the group policy)

Are you referring to a built it , or 3rd party type?

built-in
name just escapes me

i am thinking DEP
see if i can find it

that's date Execution protection.

yea doesnt stop them from running, just stops them from running into the important memory

6:03 AM
not what I am talking about
I must be thinking Application Guard, but it's purpose is around trying to harden specific applications, not block their execution but its features is what was stuck in my head.
or perhaps not..

it aint windows file protection, or system file protection. it aint system restore, it isnt the "defender" the defender might be classed as a application guard

I am an idiot
4
It's called AppLocker

lol mystery solved

I literally had the page open in another tab
skipped it because it was the group policy article, but I forgot, the feature itself is called AppLocker but is basically just a group policy.

yes and you said not group policy, but it pretty much is

Q: How do I block virtual machines from executing on Windows 7 or accessing the internet?

user9885I want prevent virtual machines from executing in environments like VMWare or Virtual Box on Windows 7. I know there are application blockers and application installation blockers that have password protected blacklists. That is a possibility. Another thought is to find software that prevents ...

@bwDraco that and us pesky non americans are vocal about the benefits of higher voltages ;)

So he rules out AppLocker (running) and group policy (installation) which doesn't leave very many options.

lol
"run a really really old machine"
seems really broad

He could disable virtualization but Virtual Box and VMWare Workstation do not require it.
You just can't virtualize the hardware without the extension...

yup
and you can run QEMU without any special rights at all

6:17 AM
^^ AppLocker would take care of that but valid enough point

easy answer, present applocker , and like MS dont tell em it pretty much is group policy

hm
convince the machine its a VM?

lol

@JourneymanGeek - Hyper-V and VMWare support nested VMs

would that work? or are the stories about people running VMs inside of VMs
oops beat me to it

6:20 AM
heh
and dosen't stop qemu from running either
comes to mind

Please to wish me great luck. I am gonna pull 8 drives out of my computer , it better work.

6:58 AM

8:21 AM
such pity
so tragedy
much pain
now how would you like your new drive formatted?
MBR or GPT , 4k or 32K clusters? ntsc or Ext

ntsc
though I prefer formatting as PAL myself, being from a places that uses it.

yea standard colors :-)

I'd probably go for the faults, and NTFS
there's no reason for ext unless you run linux

it is nice to get a drive that goes when you plug it.
so i do tend to format them for windows (unnessisarilly)
cant even tell which is which now though. made sence when they were a raid array, now i got Attack of The Clones
i suppose GPTing them would be par for today?

Yup
tbh, I don't remember what I use most of the time ;p
I just go with the defaults

8:36 AM
I have big clusters on big disks that hold big data , and the reverse of that all for small stuff. surprisingly there is very little disk space lost.

why do we need smbd.service for dhclient? questions is very incomplete that's why I didn't post it?

one need remember when we are doing file sizes around 1/4Gs and up, 512b is teeney tiney 4K barely there
4k might have been something , when a whole game was 9K :-)
hmm thats blog materials. how many 4k clusters does it take to hold a 25GIG game
so happy the disk controller and file system can assemble that puzzel.
the masters of the hidden object puzzels :-)
find 2 million pieces and assemble them in order, you got 3 minutes
aaaammmazing

@Psycogeek actually with bigger files, bigger clusters are more efficient

drives still shiney, and i got a smart report, selling should be easy
Dont really know which smart report goes with which drive though
(cause it was raid 0)

9:17 AM
3 years old
Power-On Hours" rawValue="7793"
approx 1 year
Spin-Up Time in millisecs" rawValue="5991"
so i suppose this isnt a cumulative data 6 seconds?
Twould make more sence if that was spin-up hours,

Dog
9:35 AM
@allquixotic cat came up to me in the street yesterday while I was doing LTE tests and did that
@allquixotic what about in your pocket?
Or do you mean video recording

@Dog so are we to assume you survived your departure from reality?
or
What did you do to dog, and put back his computer

2 hours later…
Bob
11:13 AM
@DenisKa Yes, it's very incomplete. You can start with describing why you think dhclient depends on smbd. Did you see a line in a config somewhere, or was it an error message, or ...?
@JourneymanGeek rationality is overrated
burn all the things!

@Bob >_>

11:34 AM
Has anyone here been able to recover data from an NTFS partition after installing Ubuntu?

Bob
recovery implies it was lost in the first place

I mean to get the files and all that

Bob
then... just mount it and treat it like any other partition?

Well, we're not sure it has been lost. See, on AU, we have a question where someone half-installed Ubuntu and removed their Windows partition from the partition table. At that point, we thought that data would still be there. I suggested some steps found on AU for recovering an NTFS partition. Somehow, after completing those steps, we ended up with Ubuntu in an LVM volume. Now we're not sure what to do, as we have no idea where Windows is.
Sorry for the wall of text.

"some steps"
what steps?
Why did he not back up?

11:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek here:
12
A: How to recover a deleted NTFS partition with data

Geppettvs D'ConstanzoWell. Testdisk really works. I have documented in the past my previous 500 GB Data loss which was up to 80% recovered via Testdisk. Take a look at this video in Youtube: Recover deleted partitions using Testdisk in Ubuntu #11. Unfortunately it was removed when the Israel Remix Team distro moved ...

He had already lost the partition layout for Windows so I suggested these steps. Somehow after that we ended up with an LVM volume

rofl
testdisk has instructions on their own page
and testdisk would, if it was possible to recover, seen the partition

Bob
@MarkYisri the context helps a lot
testdisk is the right tool, but only if used correctly...
eh, typing on mobile is too annoying. bbl

@Bob I know about the typing, I use an ereader at night
to type on chat
very hard

11:59 AM
....
so you carried on installing ubuntu?

pretty much once you overwrite data, there's no recovery.

Actually it isn't me who did it, but rather another user on AU

Q: How to install Windows XP on a new ASUS laptop

Mohammad Hossein RI have installed Windows XP a thousand times before; so I know everything about it. But when I tried to install it on my new laptop (ASUS V502U) this screen appears: I tried "Service Pack 3" and "Service Pack 2 x64" from USB and external DVD drive but the result is the same each time. How ca...

This makes me a sad panda

@JourneymanGeek That actually makes me happy. New machines actively refusing to run XP is a Good Thingâ„¢

Oh, that people are still trying ;p

Well yeah, pretty sure I had a go at someone a few days back about running outdated software
I swear, Microsoft even made it fscking easy to upgrade at various points. Prerelease price for Win7 was (in the UK) £45, Windows 8 had an upgrade price of something like £15 for the first year, and to upgrade from either of those to Win10 was free.
If you're still stuck with XP after all that then you deserve whatever pain you get.

yup
(though, I erm... have a physical, period accurate, XP box ;p)
though it's mostly on lubuntu
and it was a pain
and I somehow managed to break the onboard keyboard and mouse ;p

I'm curious how you managed that

12:56 PM
er. Absolutely no idea
for some obscure reason, the specific, slightly unusual version of windows XP I used kept asking me for the installer disk
and one of the file corrupted itself
And I just copied it over from a vm

And that killed the keyboard?

Installing missing drivers killed the keyboard :p
And touchpad/trackpoint

reinstall?

Naw. Plugged in an external keyboard and mouse. I had some idea what was broken so just copied the folders I needed over and pointed device manager at it

Bob
1:17 PM
@Mokubai There's no direct upgrade from XP to 10.

1:35 PM
@Bob two of my win 10 boxen were XP out of the box

@Bob There were several years of chances to do it one way or another, now your best option is "buy a new machine". Which also comes with the neat side effect of being a massive performance boost for what can be a lot less than that original machine cost you.

@Mokubai funny thing is I see the benefit of running old hardware with minor upgrades + a modern OS over running an old OS on modern hardware
My dad runs a core 2 duo with an SSD and windows 10 as his regular machine
it performs a lot better than XP did

@JourneymanGeek And that's pretty much how my old boxen got over the years, but I went with the upgrades as I knew there were upgrades to the software functionality and that old products eventually loose their support and become insecure.

Hello

@Mokubai I cheated ;)

Bob
1:43 PM
@Mokubai I'm not trying to defend use of XP. Just pointing out that there was never a free upgrade for XP users.

Small costs to upgrade are fine, but putting your head in the sand, loudly trying to convince yourself stating "WELL I LIKE XP AND IT WORKS FINE" is not an option

@Bob the reasons for running XP now should be the same as running 98me now ;p

@Bob Never free, no. But there were plenty of low-cost solutions before XP went EoL.

@Mokubai the entire point of my XP box is to answer questions on the site. Which is a terrible thing to do ;p

yesterdsay i was listening to a call with someone on win95

1:45 PM
@JourneymanGeek VM?

@Mokubai initially

@djsmiley2k o.o

then, I kinda remembered I had a spare box next to me...

@Rahul2001 yup

it triple boots XP, lubuntu and haiku

1:47 PM
As XP went EoL years ago, Microsoft are fully justified in ignoring it as an upgrade path IMO. Windows 7 was released in 2009 FFS.

@Mokubai and 7 is in danger of being the next XP
Lots of places are using it in new deployments as a standard OS

Bob
@Mokubai In this case he's got old hardware that literally won't work with a newer OS. Sounds like a good reason to me.

well that's stupid, considering mainstream support ended in 2015

1:49 PM
@Bob Sounds like a good time to throw out that old golf-ball printer to me

I'm surprised there's still media out there

Bob
@Mokubai ok, seriously, you're letting your hate for XP blind you here.
It's a microcontroller programmer. If it's the only supported way to program old embedded hardware, guess what? You have to make do.

I will admit I do hate XP, and I will admit that we shouldn't just chuck old good hardware out.
But surely there are better alternatives?
What microcontroller?
We have newer, better hardware in every way these days, is that microcontroller not due for a hardware refresh itself?

@Mokubai in that case no

Backing up to external drive using more than one backup software simultaneously. Do you see issue with this? Comodo Backup + EaseUs To Do programs.

1:54 PM
@Bob I'd make the case for keeping the system offline and appropriate period accurate hardware
You're not going to have easy parallel and serial ports on modern enough machines
@Mokubai in fact obscure, mission critical hardware is the one reason I can think of to keep older OSes

Bob
@Mokubai Nope.
Most embedded chips ... work just fine, as they are.
There's no yearly upgrade cycle.
Sometimes not even decadely.

(also in the case of OS/2, annoying @allquixotic ;p)
