11:05 PM
Wish I could just throw away my poweredge 2600 dinosaur but I can't :(
!!doog

@oldmud0 That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

!!dooooooog

nailed it
I have no money and I need to add sata support to the home server please help.

What do you need SATA support for?
If you don't need speed (i.e. you only want to use a SATA hard drive), you can buy a USB to SATA adapter for not very much

11:12 PM
uhhhh the dinosaur only has two USB 1.1 ports

I want to sleep

sorry m8
@ThatBrazilianGuy please sleep before you start losing some thinking about my dinosaur

!! s/want/need/

@ThatBrazilianGuy I need to sleep (source)

You can also buy a USB3 expansion card for not very much

11:13 PM
clippy can help

Help! Quick! What's the most sleep-inducing stuff on Netflix?

Though if you get too many "not very much"'s, they'll turn into "a decent amount"

ye but, where do I put them
what if I want to replace all my scsi drives with them
and add some raid?

The expansion card would go in a PCI slot
I think all modern OSes can do software RAID

SCSI. Now that's a word I haven't heard... in a long time.

11:16 PM
well I am going to debian on the next run of work on the server
this server is making its way to the trash very slowly

You might want to start saving for a new server, if possible

with birthday money...
ha, by that time I'll be in college
so much for savings then

How's the job situation in your area?

eh, they want kids to finish high school first

If there's a Hy-Vee in town, they really like to hire teenagers

11:17 PM
then they want them to go to codeup or whatever and send them straight to the workforce
uhh, this is texas?

Are there not Hy-Vees in Texas?

No... just a lot of walmarts

Oh, that's lame

I've only heard of the people who have jobs, say that they work at a fastfood chain or a supermarket
Not very skilled labor.

No, but it is money
It might also be worth trying to get into consulting: fixing stuff or building little things for people
That's currently how I get my money

11:20 PM
Well I am doing some work at a medical office for my dad. Wonder if he'll pay me or not for it.

If you're working on IT stuff for an office, they should definitely pay you

Not IT today. Just record filing.

Oh. Well, you're still giving them your time

heh! the MSU question is funny

Try asking whether they like your work, then ask for an actual job
@Burgi Somehow we seem to get a question to that effect every month or so
I'm so Meta.SO is deluged in them though

11:23 PM
Well school starts in 3 weeks, and I'll probably be in the office for those 3 weeks. Maybe he will pay me.

It's worth asking :)
How large is the practice?

@BenN maybe we should flag it as a dupe for the lulz ;)

One doctor, with appointments filled till September!

Ah, I had been imagining something larger. I'm sure paying for record entry is within its reach, though

@oldmud0 my first job was in KFC
hated it

11:26 PM
@oldmud0 Huh? How old are you?

the first job i liked was in a call centre

I mean if you've been catching my chat lately you should have a pretty good idea of how old I am

18 ish i think

2 years off.

16?

11:28 PM
There.
And I'll be a senior.

Good times

oh dude just get a shop job in a supermarket or something
you'll meet people and have cash

Getting references for better jobs is super important too

yup

Probably going to be drowning in schoolwork though.

11:30 PM
Oh, and it's almost application season for colleges - Early Action deadline is November 1

you only need to do a couple of shifts a week
i only worked saturdays
you finish at 4 or 5 and you still have the entire evening to go play your favourite generic geohashing game

At $10/hour working 8 hours per week (9-5 on Saturday), you're making $80 a week, which adds up
Just $80 would easily cover the server peripherals I mentioned
And you can invest and stuff if you're that kind of person

in my head all the people in american high schools are good looking and popular and they all drive mustangs

Not so in reality, unfortunately :(

but hollywood never lies.....

11:36 PM
@oldmud0 I haven't really much. Lately I've been more of a casual here

@oldmud0 as a government employee in brazil @ThatBrazilianGuy has been given a pipette and told to remove the pollution from the olympic park

"Pollution" meaning himself?
Hahahahh...
Wow that was really unfunny.

Not sure if you're up on the state of Rio, but there are massive problems with environmental pollution

yeah

And corruption.
Corruption is the blame to all those problems.

Bob
@BenN s/environmental pollution/raw sewage/

in my head brazil is all stunning beaches, gorgeous people, great weather and they have carnivals everyday

They say choosing Rio de Janeiro as an Olympic host was just a scheme for the politicians to get a nice cash boost.

I imagine it's like that in the richer parts
Well, Rio was doing kind of OK at the time they were selected, but things went seriously downhill

things went downhill after the world cup

11:42 PM
Things have gone downhill in Puerto Rico for many years now and only now outsiders have noticed.
My mother tells me a stretch of highway has been kept "under construction" for almost 30 years now.

who would have thought that london 2012 would be the least corrupt, best organised and most well attended olympics of recent times

Don't forget the water and electricity that they don't give you, and you still pay at exorbitant costs.

i'll be honest we even surprised ourselves at how well it went

@Burgi Uh, what about the McDonald's exclusive partnership
A lot of people didn't like that did they?

"least corrupt"

11:45 PM
They don't have to be corrupt since the military already gets a vast amount of the budget.

@BenN No no no no, you got it wrong. Rio has always been both wonderful and shitty. The world only knew the beautiful part. Until now.

Hey, just put an anti-air defense system on your lil old retirement flats eh okay with you chaps?

I see. Where does the Olympic situation lay with respect to that divide?

Hey RA it's snack time!

@oldmud0 all olympic cities do the "ring of steel"

11:47 PM
In sochi was it the iron curtain?

yes

"No the iron would oxidize too quickly''

7 mins ago, by oldmud0
They say choosing Rio de Janeiro as an Olympic host was just a scheme for the politicians to get a nice cash boost.

ye? and?

and FYI the UK only spends 12% of the GDP on defence

11:49 PM
What @oldmud0 said, pretty much.

most non-first world countries would have a pretty similar plan
CIA screwed up Latin America
Just totally screwed it up. Gave power to "democratic" dictators.

Lots of Brazilians hate the whole Olympics situation and in multiple occasions protesters tried to extinguish the torch
I don't blame them

@ThatBrazilianGuy that happened here too

They did once, I heard. And the police came and started beating them up.

Wouldn't surprise me.
Well, let me get back to netflix & sleep.

11:52 PM
it also went out due to the adverse weather conditions our little island calls "summer"

I already posted a photo of food to get @Bob hungry

look what you did

!!wiki cat filters for chrome mobile

@ThatBrazilianGuy The Wikipedia contains no knowledge of such a thing

Dog
11:52 PM
@oldmud0 Does it not have SATA?

@Dog no, it doesn't it only has SCSI

are we going to be spammed with dog memes until you change your name to giraffe or something @Dog?
3

I hope she doesn't change her name to Porn...

Dog
@oldmud0 Well I have plenty of free SATA cards, but if you want to use the internal slots then you'll have to replace the backplane and that's not going to be cheap

I immediately think "bread" when I glance at that image

Dog
11:53 PM
@Burgi Woof

@Dog Nope, not going to replace backplane, there is a way to do it, I read a blog post on how to do it.

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy lol. that only works at midnight :P

@ThatBrazilianGuy that would be an interesting and short lived name change....

Dog
Or you could rip out the backplane completely and just wire them directly by hand but that's both ahrd and pointless

!!pr0n

11:55 PM
@Burgi That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

@Dog Server can't boot without the backplane, even if I replace it

Dog
@oldmud0 Now that's just stupid
!!trout Stupid Dell

slaps Stupid Dell around a bit with a large trout!

Yes it is. Very stupid.

Dog
Wait is it PSCSI or at least SAS?

11:56 PM
right bedtime

So the best I can do is put the backplane somewhere far off, solder some led cables, get some angled SATA cables, connect them to the card and glue them to some board.

Dog
Err... yeah... something like that
That'd be so extremely hacky and time-consuming that it's not worth the time IMO, but hey, if you're that desperate...

So the slots could still work, but it's still a coldswap only
Nope, not even SAS

Dog
My ghetto solution is just to dangle cables out the back through an empty PCI slot and just sit drives on top of the case.
(Much easier than trying to fudge them into the internal bays with a SCSI backplane in the way)

Bob
...my solution is to just use USB-attached external drives :P
Bonus, they're actually cheaper
and USB hubs are much easier to come by than more SATA ports

11:58 PM
Yeah but they're less reliable.

Dog
USB hubs are much easier to come by than SATA hubs too
Also more widely supported and less likely to catch fire

Bob
@oldmud0 Eh... that's why I have many

Dog
(That's based on my sample size of one, 100% of which have caught fire)

But, this is stupid.
