12:12 AM
Anyone around?

what?

Looking for suggestions on how to harvest my software keys from my old HDD :-)

as in licence keys?

Indeed
I tried ProduKey but its failing to pick up one a couple particular keys I am interested in

ugg, i dont know they use so many different and varied methods because of cracking.
odd places in the registry where it shouldnt be. proper places in the registry. files that are purposfully broken.

12:27 AM
I was afraid of that
You have to be kidding me. I can't access System32 on the hdd, .....<sigh>

sure but the viruses still can, so no problem there :-)
A start to finding "registrations" in the registry , a simple program will store it right there in thier "software" section. you just search for the program and or company <--important. Then look for simple knowns licence or registration, or really weird stuff. Programs that will openly store it there under thier own name, rely on hardware hashes and registered usernames that create unique product licences. In other words, you cant just drop that in another computer anyways.
A second "easy" place is in the users folder, appdata usually. if your transporting that program via files, you would need those folders anyways.

@oldmud0 Pointer to a null-terminated string
Also, interestingly, you can still upgrade to Windows 10 free if you're willing to say that you use accessibility technologies
2

@BenN can you say that again, i coulndt SEE it very well, i think i am going blind :-)

lol

cat
!!caat

cat
@BenN Eh, I wonder how they'll treat everyone trying to install W10 with a W7/8.1 key from now on. If you try to reinstall W10 with a W7/8.1 key you've already used to upgrade in the past, will they accept it?

@Ramhound what specific keys?

12:47 AM
Visual Studio
Office 2015

Depending on where you got VS, the key could be in your account with the vendor

My current problem is that my System32/config folder is owned by a user that no longer exists.

You can icacls stuff from an offline WinPE
Or actually takeown in this instance
Or use Ubuntu to copy the hive files somewhere and then reg mount them
Speaking of hive files, it's actually a massive pain to repair a wrecked registry offline unless you were really careful to export each mounted branch as a separate file, and a binary (non-.reg) hive file at that

Well not trying to recover the registry hive, just look through it, for the keys in question. I have them in a text document, on the desktop, I can't access

What's your current environment?

12:52 AM
I installed Windows 10 on the replacement HDD

An administrative command prompt will be able to poke around pretty much everywhere
Alternatively you could psexec -s -i cmd for a command prompt running as SYSTEM

Trying to avoid taking ownership, I believe I might be able to "upgrade" the installation, if I can only clone it.
before hand

I don't believe it's possible to upgrade an offline installation to Win10, but I could be wrong

I didn't believe that to be the case either but when I installed it, it gave me that option, I didn't select it for obvious reasons

The "upgrade" button in the boot-from-install-media setup just produces a message that tells you to boot up and re-run the setup ;)

12:54 AM
Even so. I want to make a clone of the HDD, and mount that in Acronis
But the problem was that Acronis was bailing on me or it would complete and tell me it lost the desination drive.

got space for a file image? that is the method i always use in acronis and only from the boot cd, for the windows system partitions.
Are you trying a Disk-Disk clone now?

I always create the image the restore that

thats what i do.

I figure if something fails I don't want the original to be effected.
Yep
Defraggler is now reports that drive with Warning
5 Reallocated Sectors Count 319 190 190 140 0x00000000013F

uh oh

1:02 AM
Yeah.
I just hope it was just system files

dont you have a Previous image ? kinda to late to ask that.

Back in Nov before version 1511
HDD was sitting on my desk was waiting for a better time to lose my PC for 2 days, lol
So you know of any program like SpinRite that actually supports 2TB drives?

such is why my OS partition is tiny, all the critical elements of the OS and the programs, but not the Huge games.
and certannly not user data which can be synced instead of cloned.
5 minutes to image, 2 minutes to restore.

Pain in the rear end to manage an installation like that though. Indeed perhaps I should think of a better data management solution.
Well currently looks like I will have to load Ubuntu in order to access the AppData folders I want.

it can be a pain if one starts doing crasy re-direction links, i dont like that, wont do it.

1:11 AM
* I can't even figure out how to add the default desktop icons, its been months, since I did it on any machine I own
was under themes

1:29 AM
I learned something really important
CrashPlan will allow you to restore your files exactly in the same path with ownership of those files
So AppData and Desktop will be synced in the future.

1:41 AM
I really wish we had law that was easier to understand, like your country does, @Bob.
The Australian government really put a lot of work to rewrite much of its law in plain language.

1:55 AM
> Dear Staples Customer,
We're currently performing ongoing security maintenance. For your protection, please select a new password.
Click the button below to reset your password.
Is this a problem?
It looks like Staples has decided to require everyone's passwords to be reset (perhaps due to changes to the underlying password storage system)

2:18 AM
All right so thanks to this "extension" I have yet another shot at upgrading to win10.
SU obviously counts as an assistive technology, because I am an idiot.

Draco, be sure you manually go to staples.com
don't click links like a noob
That way if some random event, the email is fake, you will go to the rela website
Besides if it is true, if you log into using your old password, they will prompt you to change it

hah, that would be one heck of a snowball effect

darnit acronis read my HDD!

hackers hack a large company's website, company issues public release, hackers use list of emails to send out the notice to change passwords (with malicious links), boom doubly hacked

or
hackers hack a company, spam all registered emails, and point to a fake website with a fake new article

2:36 AM
Should I downgrade to windows 10 or take the exit to Debian?

If you don't like Windows 10, don't use it, but don't attack it unless you have actually used it
darn missed ordering a pizza from the place I wanted to

So should I take a shot at using the botnet?

...
What botnet?
The only new feature that Windows 10 has that Windows 7 or Windows 8 didn't have is Cortana, and Cortana can be disabled, by not logging into your account.

Sorry, you must not be familiarized with how I talk. I tend to call things a botnet.
For example, Google Chrome is a botnet.
You're a botnet.

Well shoot. officially put my drive over the top from sort of fudged up to an error state...
Lets just hope my backup doesn't fail on me

2:50 AM
Should have backed it up on a VCR.

Can you be helpful?

Uh, sorry..
what kind of an error state?

1 Read Error Rate 0 15 13 51 0x00000000082D
5 Reallocated Sectors Count 342 189 189 140 0x000000000156
197 Current Pending Sector Count 352 200 200 0 0x000000000160
I am not sure if I am making it worst or better
by better, I mean, not making it worse.

@Ramhound THAT looks really bad

I know
I think I might be making it worse....I just need two directories
Desktop and AppDate :$

2:55 AM
Well, the hard drive is probably right now figuring out that it has problems as it's going through the disk
Of course it can't magically sense it has bad sectors

that's what the firmware is for

and acronis is the wrong tool at this point. gddrescue from linux to image. Then you can mount the backup with kpartx to do file level recovery

ok
I will try that

You MIGHT be able to convert it with qemu-img to a vhd to direct boot, but I've never tried that.

can I app-get that in a boot .iso of Linux?

2:57 AM
yeah
you can use apt-get from an $buntu livecd of some flavour.

hey what's that backup tool that does both incremental and compressed cloud backups and allows you to look at the backup contents to pull something out?

So do you suggest I stop trying to backup the hdd using acronis though?

@Ramhound absolutely

ok
Just worried that Acronis Is not creating the files as it goes as a sign stuff ant there

Yeah, that's like talking about treatment options with a doctor when you're in the ICU and hardly conscious

2:58 AM
acronis is great before things break.

I still think there is no ideal backup solution made yet.

@Ramhound Basically , if you have an existing acronis backup from a mostly known good state its good.

Something not cruelly complex for plebeians and proletariats, but something not painfully simple for intelligentsia

@oldmud0 veem endpoint works great for me
very fire and forget

I do it just isn't updated. hence the need for these couple directories

3:03 AM
unstoppable copier is good if you need to grab whatever's not damaged in specifc directories, if you're already booted in

Wow this is good stuff. I would pay money for this.
holy william shatner, the UI looks excellent.
They thought of everything didn't they.

I have a windows installation up. Problem is I doubt I could take ownership of anything

3:18 AM
So, was thinking about this again:
Oct 18 '15 at 7:53, by DragonLord
I know this will seem crazy to you, but I'm evaluating becoming a professional author.
Again, virtually no talent in creative writing (the last attempt to write even a short story was a failure on multiple fronts).
This is inspired by the world's top authors, who write books that sell by the millions.
Do I give it a shot?

Eh, no.

I fear that to do this might require me to abandon my current computer/IT/programming path...
Goldmine or dead end?

But why?
Do you like writing and talking about your problems?

Consider the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, and George R.R. Martin.
I've had no formal training in creative writing.

It's like me wanting to apply to MIT as an undergraduate. Is it a dream I have? Yes, definitely a dream I've had for a long time! But is it certain it will be realized? Of course not, the chances are quite slim.
Do I believe I can fulfill that dream? Yes, definitely.
But there is nothing certain.

3:27 AM
(I could return to my alma mater and take creative writing courses and possibly even attempt a second undergraduate degree, but that would still cost me lots of time and money and could break my resume.)

You are looking right now at the apex of these authors' careers. They took many steps to get there.
I sense a level of impatience.

@bwDraco Most of them didn't quit their day job to write

Well, don't abandon what you do.

have you seen how much random crap tolkien wrote?

Again, I have no real creative writing experience, and I'm not the sort who's creative with words.

3:31 AM
Write cause you have a story to tell
not cause "it makes money"
For every Andy Weir, there's a dozen embittered hipsters

Don't jerk the wheel.

Bob
@bwDraco I've never really compared the two
but the last time I looked at the USC it wasn't that bad
not too unlike the last time I looked at AU legislation tbh

USC is more open to interpretation.

Bob
the "plain English" versions are not binding and are mostly provided as info pages

@Bob The United States Code isn't exactly bad but it does contain considerable amounts of technical language.

Bob
3:34 AM

Well that failed
Linux wouldn't even boot
seem to have a problem mounting the device.

Welp. I guess I have a much better chance of making a productive career out of working in the IT or software development fields.
Let's not waste time trying to develop a skill set from scratch.
I really should be making a career out of my existing computer skills.

@Ramhound you wouldn't even mount the device...

Well Linux failed to boot

3:36 AM
What flavour?
what error?

Ubuntu
I didn't write it down sadly
fudge

try xubuntu or one of the lighter varients

Bob
e.g.
> (4) A person (other than a federal law enforcement officer) who is assisting a federal law enforcement officer acting in the course of his or her duties may, without warrant, use a surveillance device for any purpose:

(a) that involves listening to, or recording, words spoken by a person; and

(b) that is referred to in subsection (1);

if the first‑mentioned person is the speaker of the words or is a person, or is included in a class or group of persons, by whom the speaker of the words intends, or should reasonably expect, the words to be heard.

@Bob Hmm. Australian law isn't codified the same way American law is, making it a lot harder to browse.

Lost my AppData..

Bob
3:37 AM
@bwDraco What do you mean?

Crap

Bob
I'm not familiar with how the USC is laid out.

It's not codified into unified documents like the USC and CFR.

Bob
@bwDraco Ah. Perhaps not officially, but... austlii.edu.au

There is an entire USC title for indians.

3:38 AM
@Bob That is actually a bit better than how the USC tends to write things out.

Tell me there is an entire CFR title for aboriginals.

Bob
@bwDraco tbh I'm not entirely sure how that affects browsing
do you mean you just load the whole document to do a text search?
@oldmud0 austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/… probably one of the Land Rights acts

The newer acts are written in plain English. That's much better than our legislation.

Bob
@bwDraco Do you have an example of how the USC/CFR does it?

Finally, the millenials are learning from their ancestors' mistakes.

3:41 AM
@Bob I'm looking through the Internal Revenue Code...

Bob
actually, that legislation site looks... really modern o.O
different from a couple years ago
> With the exception of the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, and where otherwise noted, all content on the Federal Register of Legislation (the Legislation Register) is provided under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (the CC BY 4.0 licence)
o.O

incredible, a government database/website that uses flat design
inconceivable

It's the new law that's much better written than the old law.

Bob
it's also much faster than it was in 2012
used to take forever to load a section -_-

I can't find an equivalent to the law I referred to. I'd have to spend a bit too much time on it (it's getting late).

3:45 AM
!!thatword

Bob
@bwDraco yea, just sleep - it's only curiosity :P

In any case, I don't think much of the USC is going to be rewritten in plain language anytime soon.

inconceivable, that meme is registered with john calvin

going nucular on this drive

3:47 AM
The latest Australian statutes are remarkably easy to understand.

taking ownership of files/folders. then doing a nuke and burn and replace it under warranty

Night, folks.
> Upon receipt of notice and demand from the Secretary, there shall be paid at the place and time stated in such notice the amount of any tax (including any interest, additional amounts, additions to tax, and assessable penalties) stated in such notice and demand.
26 USC § 6155(a).
lol
That doesn't read naturally.
This could be rewritten as:

Bob
@Ramhound ...you're kinda supposed to take the image before doing other things, such as taking ownership :P
@bwDraco wat
2

@Bob - I would love to. But I just want my data at this point. The drive is BAD S.M.A.R.T status so its not usable.
afraid more intensive sector reading will cause problems
So my plan is to remove the data off the drive.

...never mind.

Bob
3:54 AM
> 53. As a general principle, an entity may always choose to rely on a public ruling that applies to them and may choose to rely on a private or oral ruling that specifically addresses their circumstances (assuming it still applies to them and has not, for example, been superseded by a later ruling: see paragraph 55 of this Ruling). So, if there is an inconsistency between a later applicable private or oral ruling and an earlier public ruling, the entity may choose which ruling they wish to rely on. Similarly if there is an inconsistency between two public rulings (including this Ruling and
Huh, that's pretty humanised :P

I really wish our legislatures would move forward with making law easier to understand. I doubt anybody is going to rewrite the entire United States Code, though...
Night.

First Start
Scrap everything that's been suggested by any of the top 100 corperations in the last 30 years
just invalidate it
once you do that we got something workable

Bob
@JourneymanGeek we on track for an hour from now?

4:10 AM
> there shall be paid [...] the amount of any tax [...]
The split infinitive, combined with the use of "there shall be" with a past-tense verb, makes it hard to parse.

where is that from

Bob
powerpuff girls

I've seen that before..
oh

He's awesome :D
I forgot the names of the three powerpuff girls

red one, green one and blue one

...not a split infinitive, but the specific usage of the phrase "there shall be" with a past-tense verb (rather than a noun) to represent a required condition.

@HackToHell Yes. Mojo Jojo is awesome, for the awesomeness is his, of Mojo Jojo, who is awesome, and he'll beat the owerpuff girls, who'll be beaten by him, who is Mojo Jojo, who's awesome!

Done!

thanks @Mitch

Someone from this room must have reposted it...
But they couldn't crack it ;p
I just found that message after a google search...

5:56 AM
To the author of the mod flag: if you're asking for a moderator to delete a message, please try and be a little bit more detailed, so we can understand why

@Quill it's actually the solution to a hacking challenge which is going public on tuesday
We don't want the participants to stumble on this transcript and get hints...

Yeah, but the mod flag didn't really explain that it was sensitive info, it was just like 'please delete this message'

@Quill We'll do that in the future... :D
@HackToHell where did you reach?

Didn't get past the second login
yep @Quill
Our diamond coats seem to sleeping

@HackToHell need hints?

Q: PC with 32 screens freaks when more than 24 are connected

am654513I've just finished building a new control room at work. It has 32 monitors and the plan was to have a single computer powering it. The old room had a few computers with odd screens keyboards/mice everywhere and decided it was time to simply things and have a single pc - with it been a single oper...

This is so cool...

6:48 AM

@Rahul2001 whoa nelly

@JourneymanGeek that's like straight out of a Disney movie
The villain in the Incredibles had a screen like that
Also on megamind

Spam? --> superuser.com/a/1100479/337631 see the last link (note the user doesn't exist).

Not sure...

@Rahul2001 I cant think how that would work. Sure this has been done 100 times before, but not like that. generally much of the screen background and power play is done with dedicaated video machines, not computers so much.
A video wall machine breaks up and sends more than one signal to, or splits it out to more than one.
We know there are video cards out there that can easily push 4X monitors. and our hero has a really wopper (costing) machine. But isnt (question) there going to be a limitation at some point with the communications bus?
I have "felt" the PCI speed problem in one way or another for much of my time on the computer, when other people seem to not notice or attribute to that. Pushing video while a 4X raid , while doing audio, etc. They sped this stuff up many times over, and then again. but that part of it has always seemed more liimited than the access to ram, even though they can do things that require massive continual data streams, And the rest of the things going on.
I would never say it couldn't be done, but what nutjob wires all that already :-) and doesnt even know if he can do it? where was anything like that in the book being done that way? did he ever do some SLI with 6 monitors first ?

8:44 AM
@Psycogeek maybe he's just someone with a lot of money, and not a lot of sense...

At work. Someone else's money.:p

He's like that sysadmin from that 4chan greentext...

@Rahul2001 yea makes you wonder where you can meet these people who plunk down 60K on a dream, and havent yet seen a nightmare :-)
Throw money at it. and that is the way it used to be done. the dedicated split and combine machines for video walls Used To cost more than they have spent so far combined. That kind of technology is (probably) much easier and cheaper today.

9:01 AM
I think you would feel better to learn that a professional ray tracing engine has serious problems with noise, too: brigade.otoy.com/gtc/brigade/2014/03/28/… -- watch their video; they acknowledge this problem but it's not clear when/if they'll find an acceptable solution that doesn't compromise graphics quality. Maybe they need higher bit depth floating point hardware on GPUs? — allquixotic 24 secs ago

Heh. SR3 Co op is even more chaotic than single player

Bob
@JourneymanGeek it feels a bit incomplete :/
I wonder if 4 does it right
e.g. purchases, found guns and vehicles should be shared

9:31 AM
Lol. In theory I can swap a gun for you to pick up.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek but can't drop, so there needs to be one on the ground :P
The properties thing is the most annoying
Oh and the notoriety

Yup.
@Bob I donno. SR4 felt really rushed
Same map as SR3 essentially

9:47 AM
but with aliums
payday 2 co-op is great, though

Bob
@allquixotic I almost tried to Google that -_-
@JourneymanGeek eh, I can deal if it means more complete co-op :P

10:19 AM
@Bob meaning its not that likely

@Boris_yo can be really useful, but stuff like that you buy then you really get down to work, and you do not use it, as it is not nessisary, and has a rare instance of need.
also dual linear polarisers , you can cut off 95% of light with them. a single set (tied together) of 2x polarisers will not only cut various glares (which again is rare instances) but it can also be used to kill the light comming into the camera. stuff like that was way more useful with plubicon and nuvicon and ccd type sencors. the new cmos sencors and just general technology advancements the sencors cope with problems a lot better
did you know that the suns rays are not originally polarized? When i heard that I was like WTF cant be. but it is true that until it reflects off of some surface directing the light , it is not yet polarised.
soo what can a normal linear polariser do? cut those obnoxious glares off things like cars, and windows, but really if you have glare comming from a mirror or window, or a person glasses, a polariser does not "fix" it, it only helps it. It will also take time to align the polariser to the (now) polarised light that is glaring.

@Psycogeek $130 is expensive for that stuff?

@Boris_yo nobody would pay that, although the "big" filters are always really expencive. i think i got some 77s if your buying filters.
For the work you are doing (as sometimes seen) a "star" filter of really good quality is one filter you would find useful.

Generally filters are more toys, and pros in the business for a long time have them, but how often do you see them applying them? they will toss an "IR" filter on (which does nothing) just to protect the glass of the lens system, then turn around and have sold that equiptment before it really had a need to protect the lens at the cost of an f-stop.

11:52 AM
HAMMERTIME!

@ChatBotJohnCavil You don't hammer lens stupid!

ahh no these lenses are 72. one star and one polariser. GRRR. you realise every filter i have bought through the ages , none of them will fit the cameras I have now. and with the wide view lens hoods, the thing has to be left off to use them.
