he should just turn up to work drunk
or get a doctor's note for stress and go off for ages

the criteria make it hard

"For personal/social reasons alone, I simply cannot quit." this doesn't make any sense unless he has a weird personality disorder.

he basically wants to be fired, without doing any of the firables.
Tempted to say "Bribe your boss"

he should implement the perfect sharepoint installation for my last company
it got me "fired"

lol
I think someone suggested being overcompetant.

Bob
1:04 PM
Also, for anyone whose really interested, replace all my uses of the phrase "future employer" or "future prospective employer" with "wife", and suddenly, this whole question should make complete sense :-) well, to anyone whose married that is — smeeb 4 hours ago

so he wants to go work with his wife?

Bob
So your wife won't let you quit, so you need a ruse to make it seem like you really didn't want to leave, but you were fired. Wow - sounds like you need help far beyond the reach of The Workplace. How sad. Good luck with your wife and your life. — Joe Strazzere 2 hours ago

i saw that, sneaky deletes... ;)

@Burgi Yeah, I saw Bob's post and realised the quote was from the OP so mine didn't make any sense.

i disagree, i think yours makes way more sense

1:12 PM
Ok. Here it is again. "Replace boss with wife and new job with mistress and he wants her to divorce him not the other way around ;)

why would his wife stop him from going for a new, better job?
the key is to replace "job" with "mistress"

@Burgi exactly
I wonder what the "numerous other perks" are ;)

no wonder the "training up a teammate" idea was shot down

@Burgi I wonder if his current job is a Priest (or whatever) of a religion that doesn't allow marriage? So he needs to be fired by the church in order to get married.

i think most religions are pretty chilled on that front
i just realised how stupid that sounds

1:22 PM
Not if you are a Roman Catholic.

yeah i thought that

Clerical marriage is the practice of allowing clergy (those who have already been ordained) to marry. It is a practice that must not to be confused with that of allowing married persons to become clergy. Clerical marriage is admitted in Protestantism, Anglicanism, some Independent Catholic Churches (not in communion with Rome), Judaism, Islam, and the Japanese sects of Buddhism. The Eastern Orthodox and the Oriental Orthodox churches, while allowing married men to be ordained, have historically excluded clerical marriage after ordination. Their parish priests are most often married, having been...
The Roman Catholic Church, in sharp contrast to others, not only forbids clerical marriage, it normally does not allow married men to be ordained either (though a very few exceptions are granted in its Western form and a few more exceptions in the Eastern Catholic Churches).

i have a sneaky suspicion that if the jedi council allowed knights to have a family then anakin wouldn't have been such an arse

Defrocking, unfrocking, or laicization of clergy is the removal of their rights to exercise the functions of the ordained ministry. It may be grounded on criminal convictions, disciplinary problems, or disagreements over doctrine or dogma, but may also be done at their request for personal reasons, such as running for civil office, taking over a family business, declining health or old age, desire to marry against the rules for clergy in a particular church, or an unresolved dispute.

Q: Wind from kitchen sink drainage pipe

trailmaxWe live on a windy coast of North Sea. High wind is a norm here. One of the problems I face with the wind: it comes out from kitchen sink drainage pipe. If it is blowy outside, you can feel a draft coming from the drainage pipe. I think the problem is because the drainage pipe finishes outside ...

The original plumbing was hilariously wrong :P

1:26 PM
i thought defrocking was something the tabloids caught priests doing....
@Bob i had a similar issue in my old house but with slugs coming up the sink

defrocking is done to priests.

i just have a whole load of carry on movie quotes in my head now

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I have this awesome visualisation of someone running in, grabbing the frock, and running off.

lol

Bob
"YOINK!"

superuser.com/users/589704/mr-economist - is this user setting themselves up for spamming?

They are going to a lot of work about it if they are @Burgi
more a case of they just don't 'get' the site
@Bob Why is there no trap D:
Also, after we moved, we've found the washing machine drains.... onto the lawn :/

its grey water, thats fine isn't it?

1:46 PM
@Burgi that bit isn't such an issue
as it's using a normal 'down' pipe... which runs down the side of the wall...
there was a reason that part of the lawn was really REALLY soggy
dumping gallons of water beside your house every day isn't clever for your foundations

Bob
@djsmiley2k The scary thing is, wiring is often more messed up than plumbing.
It's just not as obvious until your house burns down.
@djsmiley2k If they're concrete foundations then that part doesn't really matter.
Will damage the lawn and make stepping there a pain...

Apparently I'm number one user on hardware recs now \o/

ugh
i wish someone would invent something to cancel out noisy neighbours

:)

Bob
1:55 PM
Might have a bit of trouble getting it through the door.

its really hot in my room but i can't have the window open because the noise of the wind chimes, loud talking chavvy neighbours and the people having a new roof built is REALLY irritating
i hope i get a job soon so i don't have to put up with this

its the wind chimes that is doing me in

its all day and all night

2:00 PM
@Bob they are foundations from the 1940's, so I'd expect brick/mortar
@Burgi noise cancelation

@Burgi clearly, you need to sneak in the middle of the night and encase them in concrete.

@JourneymanGeek i am seriously considering it

also, job = moving elsewhere?

Bob
Use the expanding foam stuff, it's easier :P

the job will mean i am not at home during day

2:01 PM
ah hah

method to the madness

nice
need one of those speakers too @bob

Q: Query optimization in Data stream

belalI am confused about the idea of query optimization in stream of data. As a background, I know that optimization for any query is happening inside the DBMS with using of system catalogs which contain infomation about the tables, columns etc., whatever, the optimization or evaluation process happen...

ah, tds protocol stuff
answer is parallelism being able to gather multiple streams @ once.
read up on it!

i don't think i'd still be able to answer it sufficently well

ideally you'd want to store tables / non clustered indexes on multiple filegroups on different luns so you can benefit the greatest from parallelism.
since you can read from multiple drives across multiple filegroups to gather everything @ once.
for joins / etc.

Bob
Automatic lock screen image.
I like :)

Thats a nice lockscreen image.

Bob
2:10 PM
A couple of other nice ones.

W10?

Bob
Ya.

@Bob a friend suggested sellotape and putty in the tubes

Why do I don't get such nice ones?

Bob

2:11 PM
for me today's is a autumnal sunset

Does anyone happen to know where these lock screens are downloaded?

I get my work background :(

Bob
@jokerdino I've only gotten the first one so far, but I copied the others out of the folder :P
@jokerdino %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\‌LocalState\Assets

@Bob cheating!

A: How to enable the geographical location of the image seen for the lock screen in windows 10?

BurgiEdit I have just found an option on the settings for the lock screen to enable tips and extra information. I don't know if this will give you the information you expect as I have it disabled on my machine. Original Answer I suspect your friend has got an extra app to retrieve the geographic...

2:13 PM
downvoted
I dont have that option..

^-- need to find a large resolution version of that

@GuitarShoeDave google image search ;)

Bob
Can't find a high-res of the original one :\

ESPECIALLY if they know you are photographing them

lol
this is bizarre.

2:41 PM
what is bizarre?

2:55 PM
@Burgi Nothing to do with movement. The image is just out of focus.

i was using manual focus
prior to her runing down the garden she was doing the classic westie pose on the top step

The sitting down, looking magestic? ;p

@JourneymanGeek basically yes

yeah
westies are adorable beasties.

i prefer cats but if i were to get a dog it would probably be a westie or similar terrier

3:01 PM
Snauzers are great
except for their voices

my sister loves dogs

We kinda adopted one by accident ;p
My parents think/thought its too much work

in fact she wants a small holding type thing

even if I did most of the walks before last year

with horses, chickens and sheep

3:03 PM
I think a norfolk/norwich is the smallest I'm ok with
tho, I kinda prefer bigger dogs. Ash has a big personality so... he counts ;p

my gran has a GSD who's adorable

I prefer dogs...

3:08 PM

@JourneymanGeek is that your haircut for the interviews ? or is that some other dog? where is the tie :-)

@JourneymanGeek in most of the world too if they get half a chance

@Psycogeek totally not wearing a tie for the interviews ;p

i remember once our dog stole a sandwich of my sister's plate, so my sister made another after telling the dog off. she sat down to eat the new one and the dog leapt up and swiped it just as she was going to take a bite
i've never laughed so hard

3:12 PM
my dog used to do that... :P

My dog would never do that

that's what forks are for

he just sits down and just gives you the sad eyes o doom

@Psycogeek you eat sandwiches with a fork?

@JourneymanGeek That's what happens once they get mature...

3:13 PM
no you fend off you meal with a fork, hey they got teeth.

@RahulBasu we've never had food swipage happen

3:17 PM

marital arts vs modern arts would be a whole different gif....

@Burgi apparently cats are supposed to be unclean in my culture
also, my government apparently thinks cats are too noisy for apartment living

wtf?

@JourneymanGeek is that the whip stunt?

no
Its the one where there's a guy swinging a sword around, and indy shoots him

3:21 PM
Someone ought to tell them that it's the dogs who bark...

@Burgi they also banned any dogs outside specific breeds.

@JourneymanGeek lmao, just watched it.

@RahulBasu apparently cats yowl

they did that here too but only for dangerous breeds

@Burgi JRTs arn't very good apartment dogs.
On the other hand, some large breeds are ok

3:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek apparently harrison ford was ill the day they filmed that and really couldn't be bothered

and until recently you couldn't have a local mutt.
@Burgi yup

@Burgi read the comments too?

Is a "Jack plug" a) a pointy thing that goes into a socket b) a socket that accepts a pointy thing
Context:

A: Why both my speaker only work when plugged directly into laptop?

Jamie HanrahanI mentioned the MP3 player or phone because I wanted you to try it with a different source than your laptop. This was to be a troubleshooting step. However, since you reported it works fine with headphones, and you have the same issue with a different laptop, we can be pretty confident that it'...

See the comments ;)

Jack is the socket, Plug is the item that goes in it. in electronics-speak.

lol. US answer.
"In the UK, many Commonwealth countries and some non-English-speaking countries, the word "jack" may refer to the plug on the end of a removable cable. These connectors were originally referred to as "jack plugs", or plugs intended to be mated with fixed receptacles, or sockets (which North Americans would call "jacks"), but the second word was dropped. This variant usage is in direct contradiction to common usage and official standards in North America. "

4:04 PM
why yous guys call it a Lift ?

Because it lifts you up?

carry groceries in your bonnet ?
I really think US speak is lamely simplified.
(and like it like that)

Why you guys call it a trunk? Does it look like an Elephants nose or something? ;)
No insult intended. Just expressing the vehemence with which I hold, and will continue to hold, these positions. — Jamie Hanrahan 49 mins ago

trunk like steamer trunk , foot locker, luggage.

Are all Americans so obstinate that their version of English is the one true version?

4:08 PM
no they watch british movies and BBC
Still have to mentally translate

besides in reality an elevator is a motorised verticle transport device, we should all agree to call it a MVT

" Less familiar (now) is the telephone switchboard, for which an operator had to be able to selectively connect together pairs of the thousands of possibilities, as quickly as possible.

Charles E. Scribner, a man of great ingenuity, developed the “jack-knife switch” to make fast switching possible. This was a plug with a jackknife-like handle (hence the name) that could be inserted into a socket to activate the switch. Two such plugs at either ends of a cord allowed the connection of any two sockets, yielding an active telephone connection.

really it is a Jack-Plug, it is the plug that goes in the Jack. so if somene edited my question to say that, not sure how much time i would waste over worrying about it..

4:16 PM
"Although switchboards are no longer used today, the same jack-knife switch design was used to design audio connectors — which is why we refer to those plugs as “jacks”,"

And jack-knife switch was based on a jack-knife , and the socket and plug are nothing like any of that.

I prefer to know where words actually came from and use them correctly in my native language. Just because some other country decided to change the rules doesn't make them right ;)

now we know it is all wrong.

and its not a jackknife, it is a "folding knife" pocket optional , jack probably didnt even invent it

"jack-knife (n.)
also jackknife, "pocket knife larger than a pen-knife," 1711, probably American English, apparently from some sense of jack (n.). Perhaps it originally was associated with sailors."

The entire point of tooling from an ancient hammer to a modern Git install is to save time and effort of the user. Use whatever saves you the most time and effort. Unless it’s Emacs, then consult a doctor immediately.

4:39 PM
@Caterina'Catty'McCatface Turns out I did both.

Congrats?

its here to steal your posting job!

urgh so bored of this job and this place

ahh i knew it at least one of those ransomwares uses windows (own) API. Because i do not use encryption, potentially the thing could be shut down and even with ransomware running on the computer, it wouldnt touch me. Because (way more often than we would think) these programs Are highly dependant on available holes and functions of the OS.

@Burgi doubtful tbh, it's been bad since i started.
I had a senior recruiter talking to me about a role at cisco...
(yes, yes, yes!!)

ask for something more challenging?

but.... it's gone quiet for the last 2 months too
everythings gone quiet since I moved house, annoying
Ah well, driving test tomorrow D:

gl with that

It IS possible to form 3 Layers of protection against this stuff, Like i always over do it :-) Javascript , ActiveX , can be the Web vectors. Attachements in e-mails are the e-mail vectors. then the user activly downloading stuff , wait 6 months for the version of virus to arrive in the virus databases.

what job are you doing at the mo?

IT support
it's very much first line support, tho that's not how it was sold ;/
1st line and an obcession with paperwork

make that 4 layers , when all else fails, a clone backup of the OS, and a file backup of all file items.

@djsmiley2k can you start on older tickets or cataloging the inventory or something?
they might give you more interesting things to do then

@GuitarShoeDave My first serious project: rahul2001.com/weblog/aescodr

Every one of the analisis of the ransomware that actually gets its "key" from an internet server (not all of them do), would have to get through the firewall to get said key. thats 5 . just how many bloody thing have to be incorrect (IMO) to get this stuff.

How is it that Facebook Android app takes over 300MBs?
How is it that many apps take over 130MBs?

@Burgi all tickets that I can do are done, I still don't have access to lotso f things.
stock room already been tidied

When I had HTC Desire smartphone with Android 2.3.3 apps tool 100MB at most and then I would consider those fat bastards.

@Boris_yo people are lazy

@djsmiley2k I don't see connection?

5:18 PM
@Boris_yo you would if you saw what was in them :-)

@Psycogeek Oh then that's coders who are lazy then? Not consumers?

why make it smaller, when you've jjust installed the 350Mb goliath anyway

Running out of 16GB space...

@Boris_yo i was looking at your standby reboot problem question on SU. that is some nasty question, because it looks like your dealing with 2 different problems issues in one question. It can make it harder for sure to "fix" without (like said there) somone looking at your machine there.

@Boris_yo: consider using Face Slim app instead of facebook.

5:21 PM
@Psycogeek Sometimes I have to create canvas around image because it is not in the ration I want. But it's not displayed as sharp when viewing it online, unless I fully zoom. Do you think this is because I got ratio wrong?

@Boris_yo You also show 3 different styles of BSOD, which (to me) dont look to have any similarity.

@RahulBasu: Interesting :P

They blocked WhatsApp. Again. And arrested Facebook's LatAm CEO. Again.

@Boris_yo the pictures are fine, it is the problem itself, muddeled in layers of fails.

5:23 PM
lol

@Psycogeek Maybe it's interlaced vs progressive scanning or something?
The way image is saved?
I noticed that when I change canvas and modify image so it's horizontal and vertical resolutions changed, it may regain its sharpness.
@Psycogeek BSOD? There was no blue screen. Is it black screen of death?

@Boris_yo superuser.com/questions/1052378/… this one. the problem itself and the presentation is messy, NOT how it reads or the pictures. The problem itself. Look like you have either 2 problems, or a minor hardware issue.

@Psycogeek I am checking if I am Windows Repair Disk dependent now. I think as long as it's in DVD reader it's okay. Strange theory...

@Boris_yo at the least , you probably should have asked about only 1 "problem" in the question. either the way it fails out of standby, or the reboot problem, even if they are probably related. To keep all the errors and info down to the one problem also. That is my opinion.

@Psycogeek Create 2 questions?

5:39 PM
@Boris_yo no, have 1 problem at a time. Like i said it could be related. showing errors from startup and errors from standby , presenting both problems in a pile, is not helping that question. Concentrate on only the one aspect of it, and ignore the other untill the one is fully operational.
@Boris_yo It is probably to late for that question, to be changing it now. that is just what i noticed about it, and how that could prevent you from getting help.

@Psycogeek It makes it a lot harder when there are variables involved.

arugh nervous now! D:
/me was ignoring it up until talking the boss shortly before he left
