@ThatBrazilianGuy No they don't, that one's been around since last year
!!caat

i like the new PHP for IIS installer
no more faffing about

2:09 PM
i got a spirograph kit in my welcome pack :D

crl
@Bob watched it ok, I never used thermal paste, will buy some because the laptop fan is still making noise, and the duct tape on the laptop was completely dry, I didn't look behind, the laptop is 4 years old, that paste may do the job

'duct tape'?
do you mean thermal pads?
Might want to be cautious replacing thermal pads with paste

crl
@JourneymanGeek i.stack.imgur.com/PFgBW.jpg the white tape here
(sorry not native speaker) the adhesive thing, which isn't adhesive anymore

0_0
That's not duct tape
looks like cheap, crappy paper tape

crl
2:16 PM
ah ok, :)

masking tape

crl
I can remove it? will put thermal paste there I think

That shouldn't be there at all
and no, don't put thermal paste there

probably a (super) crappy repair job

its a very cheap anti-tamper method

crl
2:17 PM
@RahulBasu I think it was there initially
will ask my mom, but I don't think it ever went to repair

@Burgi whats stopping someone from tampering and then putting new tape?
@crl did you buy it refurbished??

hmmm

crl
@RahulBasu nooo, bought brand new

is it not to hold the heatsinks in place while the 'robot' screws them in from the other side?

crl
in 2012 I think

2:19 PM
good old manufactureing hacks

crl
@djsmiley2k ah maybe, hehe fabrication chains
@JourneymanGeek where should I put paste on the picture, please?
maybe on the back of the laptop rather?

on the processor?

Paste typically goes between a heatsink and a processor
if you must ask that, you really don't want to be doing it

crl
ah ok.. but it needs something, because the cpu is over 60°C

@RahulBasu i said it was cheap, not good ;P

@djsmiley2k makes sense
@RahulBasu 0_0
a displayless android device? 0_0

too expensive according to indian standards...

naturally

its temperatures: i.stack.imgur.com/hujjV.jpg

Why is CPU #1 at 100%?

crl
2:26 PM
it's at rest ... (no intensive task)

Something's running one of the cores at 100%
Its worth finding out what

bitcoin miner?

crl
@JourneymanGeek it's just HWmonitor :/ actually, the laptop is quite slow (crappy amd cpu)

@crl hwmonitor is running at 100%?
so... there's a reasonable chance your temperature monitoring tool might be skewing your results

crl
sometimes it goes down, 25%.. 100%, but I just formated windows7, there's surely no malware or anything wrong, and put the right drivers, but will check again, thanks

2:35 PM
my new work PC is win7....
my god..... i forgot how good it was
i can find everything

Bob
@RahulBasu Ah, dammit. Another thing on the wishlist :P
@qwertyuiop Dunno if it's just placebo effect, but I think the palm rejection is better.

so... first issue.... our server has been compromised in the past and not cleaned correctly
facepalm

@Burgi actually, I'm not suprised

Bob
@Burgi You don't "clean" a compromised server.
You nuke it from orbit and start over. Or from backups (after checking that the backups are not compromised).

@bob, i know
their previous dev was a frontend guy...

At Stack Overflow, we're committed to making the internet a better place, and our products aim to enrich the lives of developers as they grow and mature in their careers. This week we have been given the opportunity to expand our reach beyond developers into another worthy demographic: foster youth.

4:00 PM
Our network is down. The proper way of notifying IT is by submitting a ticket. How? By email or via website... +_+

@ThatBrazilianGuy lol. Another broken procedure that needs rewriting. What is wrong with using a telephone? Or do you use VoIP and that is down too? ;)

4:19 PM
This is pretty interesting. I had eu-cookie-law-enforcement2.xyz as the referrer on our website
It gets more interesting the deeper you dig :D

@OliverSalzburg Do you use cookies?

@DavidPostill I'm pretty sure that site is a scam

@OliverSalzburg If I still had a website I would try their code to see exactly what it does ;)

@DavidPostill Well, they point to cookie-consent.org, which has JS that uses a file hosted on front.to, a "cdn" that apparently only hosts that file
The file itself is a fork of an old version of github.com/silktide/cookieconsent2
But I can only detect that they added Google analytics tracking code

@Bob You updated? How?

4:58 PM
@DavidPostill well, to be honest, nearly no one uses the proper channel. Or tickets.

6:24 PM
@Bob Howwwwwwww
Odin?

I'm at a meeting for 90min and I have zero idea why.
It's not even for my team.
It's not even for IT
My boss just told me to be here

crl
and you're chatting

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ask your boss why?

Me and my immediate team

crl
what's the subject?

6:31 PM
@DavidPostill He's not present, but that's OK because he's ultra busy and manages two different teams.
@DavidPostill There's a perceived reason, to understand and help the IT needs of this team. But in practice...

@ThatBrazilianGuy You better pay attention then in case he asks you what went on later ;)

They spent half an hour recapping the last meeting
@DavidPostill I'm trying, but staying awake is hard. And so far, no subjects where IT could really help.
I do, however, have both ears open

Sigh
there's very few jobs round here that fit what I can do
theres lots of dev stuff :/

But mostly, it's journalists complaining about institutional and political issues
Not newspaper journalists... what's the word... communication professionals?

lol

crl
6:38 PM
I'm a js dev, I guess you guys consider that as crap :/

@crl we're not a hive mind, you know
There are different opinions here

crl
hehe, cool, also js has a lot evolved, from shitty jquery to reactjs etc..

I can write a little php
even less python, but I know how to read a doc and figure it out
just takes me longer than the average bear

I can write a little PHP. Sometimes it even works!

crl
JS is probably the most accessible language (just F12), and the syntax gets more and more beautiful

6:43 PM
@crl I had to bash my head until code worked write some JS for an app mock-up in a hackathon last week.
That was both exciting and terrifying

crl
:), you can ask me next time if you want

Maybe I will.
Ever used Firebase?

crl
hm, not for long, it's a cloud db

Yep
We used that for getting things up quickly

crl
not bad, you can also use mlab free dbs too, but it requires server-side right.. indeed

6:47 PM
Takes away some part of the complexity of setting up the back end, and simplifies real time operations

@ThatBrazilianGuy PR (Public Relations)?

crl
or pull request maybe

@crl I know nothing about modern frameworks. Angular, node, nosql, etc. I know only the names

crl
I prefer reactjs to angularjs, and nodejs is JS on server-side, quite fun, nosql are just sql alternatives, schemaless DBs (mongo, cassandra..)

6:51 PM
@DavidPostill Not exactly. I guess they have PR people too, but many. Mostly people that write media content and plan communication strategies. It's not a business oriented organization, so they work in a non-business oriented way, so it's not sales or PR or anything like that

crl
@DavidPostill damn, best way to make google leave france (I'm French :()

@crl I really, really need to recycle my knowledge and toolset. Been meaning to do that for ages, since I started working here. This last project might be the influence I needed.

I agree that taxes should be paid by the big organizations on income earned in that country... If they didn't shuffle money around to different countries, then I think Google would be in a great position. Shuffling money after receiving it to avoid taxes is shady as fsck to me

Although it was not the selected contestant, it was so cool for me I want to keep working on it

crl
yes, also it's really cool to learn the new JS, you have lambda functions, destructuring, spreading, etc..

6:53 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Marketing then? Or Corporate Communications?

@DavidPostill Mostly similar to the latter
I don't think there's even a marketing team on a public university
@crl Seeing functions used as arguments to other functions sounded weird to me, but maybe it's not exclusive to JS and it's due toy newbieness ;p

crl
yea, callback mecanism is old (C, ...)

As in, not calling functions defined elsewhere, but rather the entire body of a function being used as an argument

crl
let foo = (a, b, doLater)=> doLater(a,b); foo(1, 2, (a,b)=>console.log(a+b) )

I am on mobile and looking for an example would be hard for me right now :(

crl
7:03 PM
then there are promises: vpaste.net/eGbkZ that make async stuff simpler (also 1000 in ms=1000, is a default argument)

Yeah, I was reading some stuff and realized promises is an interesting topic that I must read later

crl
cool, and then there are generators, and coroutine (co) jsbin.com/jelaku/3/edit?html,js,console to execute asynchronous tasks in a declarative way

7:21 PM
That reminds me @ThatBrazilianGuy how was the hackathon?

@RahulBasu Didn't sleep for three nights, built a cool prototype, didn't get picked up, haven't given up on the idea yet, want to learn JS and better coding, create an app / service and /or a public geolocation API
Also I am on mobile and hate typing here. Had to reduce a lot of things into a single sentence
OH LORD HELP US THEY WANT THESE MEETINGS EVERY WEEK
No, biweekly. Bit less worse I guess.

bi weekly means twice a week

Hey do anyone know with MS word, and Tabes.

factorials everywhere!

Like How do I add up Colues base on their Number like 5
And not Above, because it doesn't work since it isn't above
or Left, or.....

7:36 PM
you need to use excel

Word doen't have that Feture

@ThatBrazilianGuy:
def factorial(n)
if n == 1
n
else
n * factorial(n-1)
end
end

word can embed excel spreadsheets but it can't do them itself

How?

@MathCubes Google is your friend Embedding an Excel chart

7:41 PM
Yea Alreay found something
Thank thou

This room needs more beer

I am a person, not a noodle.

@GuitarShoeDave wait for a few years...

@qwertyuiop: it ended up being a configuration issue.... that I ended up fixing.

@qwertyuiop I thought you were a cat :/

7:43 PM
I told them WEEKS ago it was a configuration issue
WEEKS

Lol

@GuitarShoeDave Lol

And i spend 20 minutes working on it.. and sure enough... Configuration issue

Lololol
What did they (mis)configure?

That one IIS site issue

7:44 PM
Yeah what did they do wrong
Was it pointed at the wrong database all along or something

Webservice defined incorrectly

@GuitarShoeDave Uhh... Thanks, I... guess?

@DavidPostill is that actually beer? Or just a can?

@ThatBrazilianGuy: "As in, not calling functions defined elsewhere, but rather the entire body of a function being used as an argument" is that what you mean?

7:47 PM
i remember this time last year our crm project was stuck. our infrastructure manager was being a dick and saying it wasn't his fault that the VDIs couldn't connect properly. i took one look at it and realised that he hadn't whitelisted them on the firewall
another time he was so very wrong i took to the internet to prove him wrong

Q: JavaScript Errors

BurgiI have a single user who is unable to access our SharePoint 2013 intranet site, everyone else can access it without issue. Regardless of the library or level of access granted to the user within SharePoint he runs into the same JavaScript errors (see screenshot). Things I have tried: Site is...

@Burgi Did you get a pay rise that year? ;)

no
he shacked up with the HR girl so he won't get fired
3

I should try that

he was an utter arsehole

Chicks dig assholes

7:51 PM
i am so glad i don't have to work with him any more

@GuitarShoeDave No, as in:
`object.child("name").once("value", function(something) {
variable = someobject.val();

if (something) {
// do_stuff_here;
}
});`
The "something" function body is an argument to the other function.
That's what I meant earlier @crl
@Burgi So how do I state it happens every other week? "Every other week"?

fortnightly

Do you have his number?

why @qwertyuiop are you planning to shack up with him?

@ThatBrazilianGuy GCM doesn't let you do multi-line monospace with backticks
object.child("name").once("value", function(something) {
variable = someobject.val();

if (something) {
// do_stuff_here;
}
});
you have to do it with the "fixed font" button
or Ctrl+K

7:58 PM
@allquixotic Google... Code Manager?
@allquixotic There's no such button on the chat. Do I have to open a main site window just to compose code?
object.child("name").once("value", function(something) {
    variable = someobject.val();

    if (something) {
	// do_stuff_here;
    }
  });
@allquixotic Oh, <kbd>CTRL<;kbd> + <kbd>k</kbd> will do.
...no <kbd> support either?

The kbd tag doesn't work on chat

<evil>CTRL+K</evil>

@ThatBrazilianGuy Ghetto Chat Markdown
the button appears when you start editing a multi-line chat line

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ;p

i want this cake....

8:04 PM
I want this cat

I want this card....

I don't

i want a cup of tea

Waiting for Polaris and/or 1080 Ti before I upgrade

I think the 1080 Ti will approach Titan X prices (or even meet it and just not have a new Titan at all).... also raises the question (for me at least) of whether it'll fit in my case

8:33 PM
I have only a GeForce 750M, IIRC.
Not that powerful, but can run Life is Strange and Batman Arkham Asylum with all settings maxed out (lower than 20 fps in my 1080p TV, but still)

@ThatBrazilianGuy yeah, I don't consider less than 50 fps to be "can run"

I am used to 30 fps. I mean, movies use 29,97. Cinema uses 24. How come anything less than 60 is "unplayable"?
I don't even know if regular TVs can render faster than 30fps
I can understand complaining about sub-30, but sub-60?
Next thing you're and audiophile discussing acoustic accuracy... OH WAIT ;P

@ThatBrazilianGuy 30vs60fps.com
What a perfect site for the topic :D
Also, technologyx.com/featured/… and many others you'll find on Google if you're interested

also, input latency is much better at higher framerates because you see the visual effect of your inputs faster
unimportant for turn-based or card games, but super important for anything where your mouse controls the camera or viewport during real-time action (so, RTS, FPS, third-person action/RPG, etc.)

Bottom line, it matters, if you don't feel like it matters, lucky you, you just saved a lot of money on GFX cards :D

!! s/, lucky you, you just saved a lot of money on GFX cards/ go buy a console/

@allquixotic Bottom line, it matters, if you don't feel like it matters go buy a console :D (source)

9:05 PM
@OliverSalzburg I... Oh my God I.... I can see it and... and it's beautiful

My life will bu even sadder now that @OliverSalzburg and @allquixotic enlightened me.
I already knew how much I had to pay to get a video card. Now I know what I'm missing T___T

9:22 PM
!!caaaat

@ThatBrazilianGuy You don't interact with movies.
@allquixotic Ahahahahaha
I'm a PC-master-race-120-fps-elitist now.

@qwertyuiop Speak for yourself... I'll marry Scarlett Johansson someday!

@ThatBrazilianGuy ...
That's not how computer games work

@qwertyuiop Pffft. Anything less than 200 FPS is for peasants!
@qwertyuiop I was thinking about movies. Is there a computer game with Scarlett Johansson?

9:48 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy I think you need a GFX card that runs at 200 fps to spot the moment where the frame counter hits 200 fps

@OliverSalzburg "up to 200 FPS". In marketingspeak, of course.

Right, right :D

@DavidPostill ...scary stuff. x_x

10:13 PM
@DavidPostill wtf

Bob
> Sorry! This game only works on your computer.
@qwertyuiop Yea, Odin 3.11 with Sammobile firmware and the updated cf auto root

Cool.
No wipe/reset?
@ThatBrazilianGuy 1080p is for peasants

Bob
@qwertyuiop nup. I took a backup just in case
Did the full BL/AP/CP/HOME_CSC flash, let it reboot, then the root flash
Odin 3.10 is buggy and requires manual modification to HOME_CSC
Which is what messed me up last time

Hmm
I have... I don't know
The one that came with CF-Auto-Root, and 3.07

Bob
Oh, if you have security policy updates then turn it off now
If it updates it breaks root
The new cf root disables them
@qwertyuiop Yea that works for rooting but not HOME_CSC

10:29 PM
Bleh.
Why do manufacturers have to make it so bloody complicated to just maintain root
First manufacturer to make a phone that comes rooted from the factory.... I'll be switching
(and of course gets working OTA updates)

Bob
@qwertyuiop that would be because Google changed the delta update mechanism

@Bob When?

Bob
And root now relies on a custom security policy that gets overwritten by updates

AFAIK OTA updates have been blocked since forever by Samsung

Bob
@qwertyuiop lollipop?
I'll check in a min
Got a train to catch

10:32 PM
Ever since my S2 it's been deliberately disabled
So I'm guessing pre-lollipop

Bob
There was a Google doc on it but I can't find it now

Meh, it didn't work on 2.x or 4.0+ so that wasn't the original cause

Huh
If Android 5.x uses a binary update, then you had to re-flash the entire system partition and not just a differential update?
And didn't wipe?
Huh.

Bob
Ya

10:41 PM
Interesting. That also seems new

Bob
I didn't change the system partition much
Lost the few changes there

Wonder why they did it
And given file-based updates do still work, I wonder if there's a workaround

Bob
@qwertyuiop well, their rationale is in the doc

My glasses are too fuzzy for me to be bothered reading the whole thing

Bob
Apparently file based failed if it needed to update modified files
And since marshmallow requires a security policy change (not just adding the su binary), that's always the case now...

10:43 PM
Bleh
I hate Marshmallow
I hate Android. And Google.
I hate EVERYTHING
Where are my drugs...
2
Fuck the world
I'm out
o/

Bob
O.O

11:15 PM
@Ramhound I'd like to suggest ignoring Alex. At this point he seems a little too wrapped up in arguing
