this seems pretty crazy

12:30 AM
In Excell... If you have a cell that has text aswell as number. how do I add that Number?
It is tellme a vaule Issure
There are no good answers online
Anyone knows how?

@MathCubes I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what you want. Do you want to include a number in a text cell inside an equation?

Yes
@MichaelFrank

12:57 AM
@MathCubes Is it always the same letters then numbers?
It'll be tricky if you don't know where the numbers will be in the text.

Like If I have A cell that has "50 Percent of" That Another cell with "2". I Would like to do 2*.5
Which Could be done like 2*(50*.100)
@MichaelFrank Any Ideas?

If it's always XX Percent of then you can probably get away with a custom number format.

Well, It wouldn
t be

@MathCubes You should ask a question on the main site and include some sample data.

Yea

1:11 AM
You can't use a text formatted cell in an equation for numbers without getting into some serious formulas. But you can format a number to make it look like text.

If you have `50` in a cell, and put a custom format of `### "percent of"` it will display as `50 percent of`, but will functionally be `50`

> This is regarding the new design on the train timetable/info displays.

There are serious readability issues with the new design. I'm finding myself having to walk right up to one of the displays to read, when previously I could do so from one or two carriages down the platform.

Specifically:

* The colour on the departure time of the coming/current train is too light. It needs more contrast with the background. Why not the same dark grey as the rest?

* The text of the departure time of the next train (down the very bottom) is far too small. My eyesight isn't perfect, but I suspect even
I may have gotten slightly annoyed at the new station display design...
Let's see what they say now.

Fine not done. Got autocucumbered?

Bob
Shit
...would've been faster to type up at home too
Godammit
@JourneymanGeek also, I'm stealing that... "autocucumbered" lol

Feel free. I reappropriated it too.

I am not really that bad at playing video games, THEY are just that bad at porting them to the PC :-) Ok avoid ports, and kickstarter games, anything else I should know about?

add these to your list of avoids: air, the sun, happiness, rain, and females.

Heck if i had all that, i wouldnt be playing games :-)

had an odd issue this morning
had to turn off the windows firewall in order to connect to the domain
brand new fresh PC

you mean it was actually secure?

to join it to the domain?
or to connect after joining

it was very odd
i've turned it back on now and i'm connected

What is alternative to "plot twist" but in real life?
Plot twist is used in movies but if you want to surprise someone telling you his story?

In real life it is ramifications :-) but then there is nothing twisted about that.

Like: "I am going to sneak into this garden and steal an apple!"

Then you say: Plot twist! And get your butt bitten by angry bulldog!
You don't say "BAM! You get you butt bitten by angry bulldog!"?
WHAM, BAM...

sometimes the use of "karma" or "darwin" might apply. But that is a good question, thinking . . .

How about "Freakout!"

Q: Is there an expression or idiom for something convenient that happens right when you need it to?

SmigEspecially if it's something unlikely. Almost as if it could only happen in a movie. For instance, you're about to be robbed and a random cop on patrol arrives at that exact time. What are the chances of that? Is there an expression/idiom that communicates that general idea?

9:42 AM
In this case it's not convenient when unfolding of events would cause less desired consequence.
Familiar with "Bad Luck Brian" meme?

no

That's the gist of my question.
@Psycogeek You mean you don't hang out entire days in Imgur uploading memes that you create?
What a waste of time. Start hanging out more on Imgur and post your creations on Facebook. Who needs real life? It's tough out there.

inexplicability (but nobody talks like that) or Misfortune, are 2 from the thesarus.

‘Bad Luck Brian’ meme yielded run of good luck for Ohio man: dispatch.com/content/stories/life_and_entertainment/2015/01/11/…
@Psycogeek How about "turning point"? or "unexpected turning point"?

@Boris_yo sure that sounds good.
@Boris_yo wow i did not know there was a story behind this, thought it was just some dumbass (looking) picture that was legally releaced to be used for memes.

Bob
9:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek I should add it to the autocucumberer.

@Psycogeek Lesson? Meme make you famous.

"Between licensing deals and T-shirts, he estimates that he has made $15,000 to $20,000 off Bad Luck Brian in three years" Thats cool.

Hello guys

11:24 AM
I have one question
I'm using ldap and I'd like to use the secondary groups of these ldap users for manage folder permissions
for example
If I write getent group XXX where XXX is a ldapgroup it has output, otherwise, if I write id YYY where YYY is a member of XXX I get only the primary group
How can I set it up for obtain more than the primary group?

ahh
this isn't really a place for questions.

@ITProGuy Did you ask this question as a question on SuperUser? That way if you got an answer and someone else was looking for it they could also see it.

This feels a bit more like something that would be a serverfault question
Unrelatedly, I have a windows 7 vm upgrading to windows 10. Checking for updates is at 11% but.... the system is cut off from the network so I have no idea where its checking for em 0_0

Haha windows must be stuck then. interesting.
Is the counter still going?

nope

I've been looking for information but nothing

11:36 AM
@ITProGuy Do what @JourneymanGeek said and ask the question on Serverfault.

@NetworkKingPin jumped to 20% then stopped ;p

@JourneymanGeek update buffering LOL

I'm in no particular rush
and 81%
@NetworkKingPin its clearly absorbing updates from seekrit backdoors

hahaha

I'm not even sure this will work, its a 20gb drive (too small I suspect) and due to a unrelated bug, I may not be able to do usb passthrough

11:43 AM
superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/537245 => edit I just made to fix linkrot, requires review
I hope it's not a problem to mention it as reviewable btw

@Nzall You don't need to mention it here. Anybody who can review it will see it in the queue.

@DavidPostill Sorry, I tend to be impatient sometimes

@Nzall how do you know its the same link tho?
Also, I kiiiinda think that question slipped past the cracks. Its both opinion based and a product rec

@JourneymanGeek I am not 100% sure, but it's a 19 page thread about registry cleaners in the same subforum as the original thread

@Nzall The problem here its pretty hard to tell the intent of the OP here

11:48 AM
and it has the same kind of replies that one would expect judging from what the answerer answered

(course, if he'd included what was so interesting...)
anyway
someone approved the edit...
And erm, I closed the question ;p

Turns out that I did actually include the wrong link
answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/… is the correct link to the original thread from the answerer
Would it be considered bad form if I edited the answer AGAIN to include the right link?
or do we just say "it's on hold, so ignore it"?

@JourneymanGeek thanks a lot
I'm currently writing a related question: "how do I explain to tech-savvy users that registry cleaners shouldn't be used?" On topic or not?

Primarily opinion based.

11:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek What exactly is opinion-based about that?

"How do I explain" ...
"Do I need a registry cleaner" might work
IF its not a product recommendation, and you can contrive a reasonable problem definition

@JourneymanGeek there is already a question about "do I need", but that doesn't explain why
I got a tech-savvy uncle who swears by them and I want to explain to him why they're a bad idea

Well, my usual techique is to wait till something breaks, then blame something I don't like
"THE CAT DID IT!"

Q: Is it worth cleaning the registry?

Jeff YatesI have heard that you should keep the registry clean on Windows. Is this actually important or is it just myth?

@Nzall if he swears by them he might know enough to check everything that gets selected, and could probably manully do it hisself. If he is recomending them to everyone without telling them they need to know a bit , well.
Problems today would be to recommend "tuning", or "cleaning" , or any catch phrases used in selling SEO trash "optomising" junk, and the users will start believing what they say at those sites :-)

Hmm. Should suspended users receive bounty awards while they suspended?

the site i am working on today is a sprawling .net/php hybrid

@DavidPostill my opinion would be anyone should receive credit for the work they did even if they are in prison, unless they are in prison for stealing the credit from others.

@DavidPostill I have no idea
I'd guess they'd get it after their suspension lapsed

12:45 PM
Now if the question is How does the Stack Exchange system work for suspended users, i assume they are not deleted users?

@DavidPostill I suspect that's a question that I'd have to mug a CM to find an answer to, or check/ask on meta

@DavidPostill that should be a site achievement... 'recieve a bounty award while suspended'

The irony is that IIRC the user was suspended for poor quality answers on Super User. He is now suspended network wide ...

heh
and its a one year suspension to boot

~400 rep in a week... thats impressive

from zero

@JourneymanGeek Oh, I missed that. I think he has a short suspension on SU. I wonder what happened ...

12:51 PM
@DavidPostill er, mostly stuff I can't talk about? ;p
Most of the stuff I'm aware of at least

@JourneymanGeek can you make something up?

@Burgi and probably have the exact same plot
Maybe with a dog.

@DavidPostill oh, that guy
He's the second person to have complained about me on meta.

Yeah. Him. With the weird relationship. He's managed to get suspended on at least three different stacks.

Then again, i rarely ever reply to posts

I've got that much in 2 days without bounties.

@Burgi actually, what typically happens is it gets downvoted to hell, then deleted. Occationally before I even get to see it. THAT I blame my popularity my lovely cultists the secret cabal for.

hehe

When is Alex going to give up/get suspended?

1:03 PM
do you think he is trolling or just an idiot?

@DavidPostill soon?
@Burgi yes.

@Burgi both

ahh he is on superusers, getting around an IP block is NormalUsers stuff :-0

@Psycogeek I don't think he's convinced anybody he's actually on an IP block.

I do agree though with his assessment, but it has only effected me one time , back when the ISP (cable) would give a new IP to me whenever, i found myself blocked from sites I had not yet been banned from.

1:14 PM
He's annoyed he's qbanned. Feels like he's taking out his frustration on meta. TBH, with a few exceptions, folk who are qbanned take up a lot of mod time to deal with, sometimes with little reward for us.

Meta is the place for his whiney rant about the stupidity of the system.
A question for him would be, how then would any server deal with a situation where there was a user endlessly abusing them.
browser fingerprinting?
AI text detection, where they claim they can know a user from the pattern by which they communicate.

@Psycogeek "Question bans are relative to the account, NOT the IP address (except for serious infractions)." from meta.stackexchange.com/a/161701/267099

@DavidPostill as one would expect. so his answer would be? When you actually get IP bannned then worry abotu it then?

1:20 PM
@Psycogeek Exactly
But I've given up trying to make him see sense.

@Psycogeek your reputation proceeded you ;)

when people get pi$$ed on from above, they rarely listen to the voices comming from there too .

so the DB on this site....
or rather the db connection...

@Burgi If only computers were that smart huh :-)

they specify the DB connection string in a parent class then override it in a child class FOR NO REASON

1:30 PM
@Burgi Isn't that what config files are for? ;)

see that loooooooong line of slow traffic from south to north? I just rode that. It took me an HOUR to get to work today where it usually takes about 25 minutes. All because of one fucker who had to be a "spirited" driver and crash into another person.

@allquixotic dont move to california, takes 2 hours minimum to do 25 miles around here in commute traffic (6 hours each day). if a wreck happens they just scrape it and the dead bodies off to the side , and keep it going :-)
They just keep adding more lanes, and it becomes one Bigger parking lot. A Ford Model-T Could get to work as fast as the guy with the 454 8cyl.
Someday i expect people will get smart(er) and realise that 10,000 mopeds would get there faster.

must be why some people work 4 AM - noon...

@allquixotic looks like I made it too.
Though for shredding the answer like tommorrow's homework

Bob
@allquixotic More accurately, it was probably because of everyone else slowing down to take a look.

@Bob I think that is too often the scapegoat for traffic. In actuality, what causes traffic is people moving around in lanes. Every time a car going slower moves into a lane that's going faster, they are contributing to the traffic problem, because the car that's now behind them has to slow down while they accelerate into the lane.
A crash causes a lane to basically stop, then people pull around the crash to try to keep going, which slows down the next lane. Then people move from that next lane to the other lane that's still going fast. And so on.

Bob
@allquixotic Bit of both? :P

It's human nature but it's idiot nature.

Bob
2:04 PM
Moving around lanes, and start-stop in general, does cause phantom traffic jams, yea.
But people slowing to look also contributes (and starts the whole lane switching thing behind them).

annoyingly, the traffic jam was so long that it wore down my Prius C's battery, which means my engine kept cutting on even at very low speeds to force charge the battery -_-
I turned off my A/C to try to get more battery range and stop the engine from constantly turning on

Bob
@allquixotic Then again, I've gotten into situations where I decided to stick in one lane only to find that it (and the jam) are in a branch of the road that I'm not going down.
That one was a waste of time :P

@Bob A few times I've decided to stay in a lane, only to find that I'm right behind a disabled vehicle in the middle of the road

Bob
@allquixotic Oh, those are fun too :P
@allquixotic How long was that jam, anyway? The map has no scale.

I always have the passenger look, I got driving to do.
Driver: "What did you see?"
Passenger: "What? was there something to see?"
Driver: "Get Out!"

2:07 PM
@Bob about 30 km or more

Bob
ow
that's... just a tad ridiculous

well. about 15-20 km of extremely slow traffic, 10-15 of moderately slow traffic

Bob
like, halfway across Sydney ridiculous

the more south you were, the faster you were going

possibly wholeway across singapore ridiculous ;p

2:08 PM
yeah it was basically from the southernmost point of the Baltimore beltway (the highway loop around Baltimore) to nearly the top of the northwestern corridor

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol

Traffic slows down around accidents in singapore, cause some people believe betting on car crash licence numbers is good luck....

Bob
O_O

I get off the Baltimore beltway two exits before the exit where the crash was, and the location of the crash was at least 5 km from the point where I exited.
yet I still suffered mightily from it
never even got to see the crash
though, unless there was another Prius C in the traffic, or a Tesla, I probably had the most efficient "jog" (was moving at approximately a fast jogging / average person's running speed, not even sprinting) than anyone else on the road
the Prius C gets the best "city" driving (low speeds, stop and go) MPG of any non-electric vehicle commercially sold in the US today, except for the first generation Honda Insight, which you can only buy used (new Insights are much less fuel efficient, go figure)
it gets better city MPG than even the regular Prius, by a small margin (but the regular Prius does better at highway speeds)

Bob
@allquixotic How long is your daily drive?

2:16 PM
ok so after 3 days i know what i really detest....
building html email templates

ahh yes. One of the circles of techie hell, that is

Bob
@Burgi ...what kind? :P

also outlook 2016 for PC has a different HTML renderer to OUtlook 2016 on the mac....

Bob
If you're talking templates like in Outlook, ... no, just no
If you're talking templates to feed into a custom program, that can be decent.

@Bob, templates for direct marketing emails

Bob
2:19 PM
@Burgi still doesn't say much... it really depends on what's consuming the templates
And how much styling it needs :P

@Bob in the absence of traffic impediments, and assuming I could drive at a speed that is unlikely to get me ticketed but still breaks the legal speed limit, 20 minutes. 37 km.
the entire trip only has two traffic lights, and at one of them it's legal to make a right turn on red (after stopping), so I rarely get impeded at the first light. the second light isn't horrifically long even in the worst case.
unrelatedly, this image was rendered on an e-Ink display:

Bob
@allquixotic that's... quite fast o.o
Also, right turns on red sounded horrifying until I remembered to flip the directions :P

0_0
@Bob I thought aussies drive american style?

There's one intersection on my route home where people for some reason really like to left on red while I am righting on red

@allquixotic 0_0
colour e-ink?

2:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek yep!

@allquixotic sauce?

and heh. I was looking at 13 inch e-ink screens on HW.SE
crazy pricy tho

"Australia drives on the left"

ahh
2
I remember incorrectly then

2:33 PM
About 35 per cent of the world's countries drive on the left

with a few exceptions, commonwealth ;p

and most of the land mass of the earth has right-hand drivers
China, Russia, US and Canada - that's enough to be "most" right there :P

Afternoon all, is superuser.com/questions/1080763/… on-topic? It looks clear enough to me, I want to understand the drive-by downvote

@StuperUser Tim Post lost his keys again.

@StuperUser I'd say it's on-topic

2:39 PM
@StuperUser on topic IMO

Cool, I'm more active on SO and RPG, so wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious. Thank you.

and pretty interesting problem

@DavidPostill That post is great and useful.

@StuperUser ;)

Yeah, on the plus side I can use the time it takes to copy to find out whether or not I can cancel it safely next time

2:40 PM
Wait. WHOSE KEYS ARE THESE?
@StuperUser that's the only real issue I see
no real way to close the loop so to speak

Bob
@JourneymanGeek nah. Left.

hm. Actually, depending on the size of the file, couldn't you checksum either of them?

I'll test it once it's finished and self-answer. Why guess when you can measure?

assuming they are identical, and not just similar enough

File size was the first thing I checked and the local file was big enough to maybe be the original (e.g. it hadn't started back at a few MB), but I don't have another copy of the original file to check
for now
thanks @allquixotic
