4:04 PM
just got a birthday gift in advance from my uncle... :)

was it a VPN?

lol
no
A wireless speaker ive wanted for a really long time...

there is still time to ask for a VPN
"hey you know that cool mountain bike you were going to get me, can you get me a VPN instead?"
3
i'm just trying to think what i wanted when i was 15...
it was probably "can i have a computer?"
this was the dark ages of the last millenium

lol
pretty much
though I skipped 3-4 generations and a LOT of gaming history with my older boxen

boxen?

4:20 PM
(XT -> 486 (so I missed a lot of cool 386 stuff), PII....
I think I went from that to a PIV

my first computer was a 386
all my friends had playstations
i wanted a PC

the XT was primarily so my dad could do his masters.

My mom's getting me a phone... I think my Granny might agree to a VPN

I built the PII at.. 13?

PII ??

4:21 PM
pentium 2

pentium II
slot 1 too!
slot 1s were cool

i went 386 -> 486 -> pentium -> celeron

hmm 2 PIVs I think
then a core 2 duo, when a core i7 ivy

then i had money to build a real PC

might upgrade it in a year or two, I did do a few major upgrades last year

4:23 PM
i think i had a pentium 3 rescued from a skip for a short time

Bob
I don't even remember what my first computer was. Had a turbo button. Ran... Win95? Or some DOS variant.

i remember the turbo button!

My first computer ran XP.

I had a dumpster diva core 2 duo right before my core i7

4:24 PM
why would you ever not have it on?

But I remember 98 in school...

Bob
I still have an IBM PIII sitting around though :P
@RahulBasu that's scary

i think the P3 is still in the shed

Most of my old hardware is gone

@Bob why?

4:25 PM
Other than the SGI octane...

Bob
They were running Win98 in the late 2000s?

we had 98 in college but that was because windows 2000 hadn't come out yet

@Bob that was 2006. Plus, this is india...

even in india that seems extreme

@Burgi india kinda... has a lot of 'rehomed' hardware when computers were starting to be a thing

4:27 PM
I even remember the maze wallpaper... :P

Bob
@RahulBasu 2006? Wouldn't you have been... 4?

remember that?
@Bob 5

Bob
I don't remember much from age 5 :/

We learnt to mess around with ms paint
I remember, don't know how

Bob
Ah the good ol' 3D maze.

I remember my alphabets from age 5.

when i was 5 we had 1 computer in the school and it was this:

@Burgi I missed that entire era :(

the only time we ever used it was to program the turtle

@JourneymanGeek same :(
@Burgi turtle??

4:30 PM
!!wiki turtle
actually no
!!wiki logo turtle

Logo is an educational programming language, designed in 1967 by Daniel G. Bobrow, Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon. Today the language is remembered mainly for its use of "turtle graphics", in which commands for movement and drawing produced line graphics either on screen or with a small robot called a "turtle". The language was originally conceived to teach concepts of programming related to Lisp and only later to enable what Papert called "body-syntonic reasoning" where students could understand (and predict and reason about) the turtle's motion by imagining what they would...

Bob
Lol

it drew lines on paper in the school hall
a supermarket here then had a huge campagain to get more computers into schools
so we got a load of these

@Burgi and eventually they ended up being ARM

yeah
we had them right up to when i left high school at 16

4:34 PM
Ive never actually tried a DOS PC
or anything older like that (^^)
Always wanted to though...

win + r cmd
my best friend had macs from about 91 onwards

not equally facinating...

Bob
cmd is not dos

its close enough

Bob
Apart from syntax similarities it's almost nothing like dos

4:36 PM
no..........
I WANT AN ANTIQUE PC
but im sure no one will gift me one :(

you can have my celeron if you like
its in the shed
you will have to collect it

@Burgi which country?

Bob
Just a train or five and a short hop across the channel then

4:38 PM
:P

are there no such things as car boot sales in india?

Wait... what's that?

Car boot sales or boot fairs are a form of market in which private individuals come together to sell household and garden goods. They are popular in the United Kingdom, where they are often referred to simply as 'car boots'. The term refers to the selling of items from a car's boot. Although a small proportion of sellers are professional traders selling goods, or indeed browsing for items to buy, most of the goods on sale are used personal possessions. Car boot sales are a way of attracting a large group of people in one place to recycle useful but unwanted domestic items that otherwise might have...

Yeah... no.

where people load up the car with crap they don't want and sell it for a few quid

4:40 PM
NO JUNK SALES. NO CAR BOOT SALES. NO JUNKYARDS. NO NOTHING!
Damnit!

that surprises me

Here, you can sell stuff at supermarkets...
they give you a pretty good price

Bob
That sounds more like a market than a supermarket

what about flea markets?

nah
!!wiki flea markets

4:42 PM
A flea market (or swap meet) is a type of bazaar that rents space to people who want to sell or barter merchandise. Used goods, low quality items, and high quality items such as collectibles and antiques are commonly sold. Many markets offer fresh produce or baked goods, plants from local farms and vintage clothes. Renters of the flea market tables are called vendors. It may be indoors, as in a warehouse or school gymnasium; or outdoors, as in a field or parking lot or under a tent. Flea markets can be held annually or semiannually, others may be conducted monthly, on weekends, or daily. Flea-market...

my mental image of india is massively being challenged

@Burgi We have markets, just not places like that
it's different. So different that I can't even explain it

what do you do with the crap you don't want any more?

Sell it off to the supermarkets

Bob
@Burgi 'tis a silly place

4:44 PM
or our ebay alternative

you can go to a supermarket and SELL your own stuff?

@Bob Hey!

Bob
I don't think your definition of supermarket matches ours...

@Bob you don't sell it to people
you sell it to the shop
they buy old stuff back
in exchange for discounts
And/or money
!!wiki big bazaar

Big Bazaar is the largest hypermarket chain in India. == Schemes and innovations == === Wednesday Bazaar === The concept of Wednesday Bazaar was promoted as 'Hafte Ka Sabse Sasta Din' (Cheapest Day of the Week). Initiated in January 2007, the idea behind this scheme was to draw customers to stores on Wednesdays, the day when consumer presence is usually less. According to the chain, the aim of the concept was 'to give home makers the power to save the most'. === Maha Bachat === The concept of 'Maha Bachat' (Mega Saving) was introduced in the year 2006 as a single day campaign with pro...

@RahulBasu My first computer ran basic and machine code. It had 1K of ram and used a cassette recorder for analogue storage ;) I then got a 16K ram pack. If it wobbled the computer would lose anything stored in memory and you had to reload from the cassette tape. I used an elastic band to hold the ram pack in place. One of the first programs I wrote was an assembler for it ;)
You boys had it good when you were young!
The ZX81 is a home computer produced by Sinclair Research and manufactured in Scotland by Timex Corporation. It was launched in the United Kingdom in March 1981 as the successor to Sinclair's ZX80 and was designed to be a low-cost introduction to home computing for the general public. It was hugely successful and more than 1.5 million units were sold before it was eventually discontinued. The ZX81 found commercial success in many other countries, notably the United States, where it was initially sold as the ZX-81. Timex manufactured and distributed it under licence and enjoyed a substantial but...

Bob

Usually at least one supermarket, one multi-floor department store and one mini department store plus a food court and dozens of specialty stores in one
I suppose they take the place of hypermarkets

Someone please help me...
@echo off
if %1==e goto :encode
if %1==d goto :decode
if %1==[] goto :done
It doesn't work if there isn't a parameter... What am I doing wrong?

@RahulBasu What are you trying to accomplish?

Um... Adding command line arguments to a batch file

Just put goto :done and that will catch anything that is NOT e or d

goto was unexpected at this time.

5:44 PM
This is in a batch file for Windows, correct?

yep
%% removes the error but the parameters stop working :(
anyone??

if %1==e goto :encode
if %1==d goto :decode
goto :done

I still get that error

if "%1"=="e" goto :encode
if "%1"=="d" goto :decode
goto :done

@DavidPostill thanks!

5:54 PM
if [%1]==[e] goto :encode
if [%1]==[d] goto :decode
if [%1]==[] goto :done
@RahulBasu Also works. See if

thanks

@Bob ?
lol, a | was breaking my entire application :(

@nick i would recommend the 7 distro
distro 8 was too weird

@Burgi Geez, i meant for linux.

oh i thought you were joking
ubuntu then
:(

@Burgi I was. But then i remembered i havent worked on linux much. Is there something more student focused?
I've been using Ubuntu since Jaunty Jackalope.

rasbian for the raspberry pi is probably the most student focused but it is designed to run on a single type of hardware
any way, i'm going to have a beer in the garden

6:15 PM
@Burgi Wow, thats awesome. I'm thankful I asked.
@Burgi Cheers!
