@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere in windows 10 (dont know about 8) the "system" process, or general windows system now (claims to) have a new compression routine for ram. The total ramifications of that are yet to be discovered by me, but i assume it is quick and dirty find empty space and "compress" that.

yeah but Im not even in windows 8 where apparantly they do the shared memory by passing references to common libaries instead of allocating the memory every time
im in windows 7

Dog
@Bob Someone smashed in the locker's computer terminal so it doesn't work

Bob
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere That's virtual address space, which is different from memory. Virtual memory in Windows is how much it can allocate in total, how much backing store it has. The sum of physical and page file.

Dog
I told them, they said they'd get back to me, they didn't
Instead I get automated reminders to pick shit up from the locker that I can't pick up because they haven't fixed the broken locker

oh WS stands for working set doesnt it

Bob
2:01 AM
Virtual address space is how much is addressable by each individual process, but we're never going to see the entire virtual address space allocated because there's simply not enough storage for it.

Dog
Also, running your own infrastructure takes effort, blargh

Bob
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Shared memory (DLLs, basically) have been a thing in Windows since... hm. definitely NT 4.x+, but I'm pretty sure 9x, 3.x, maybe even earlier.

Dog
I have a router that routes, and firewalls, and VPNs, and DHCPs, but now I need to make it host a local DNS too
Then I need to make the DNS interface-specific and also route more routes

Dog
It's almost as if people sell routers with default settings that just work out of the box targeted at people who can't be bothered doing all of it themselves

2:03 AM
@Dog that's half the point tho

@Dog It does. I decided to implement AD at home.
Boy was that an annoying mistake.

@Bob So, if programs are using 10GB of private bytes, and firefox starts up, it can request a virtual size of up to 6GB?

Dog
@MichaelFrank I was considering doing that in the next few weeks
Firstly cause managing separate accounts on all my devices is a pain, especially when it's all just the same username and password anyway, and secondly because DirectAccess is cool

Bob
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere If your virtual memory is 16 GB. But you're ignoring shared there.
You should also check the total shared. RAMMap is the easiest way to check that, I think.

Thank you @Bob for your time and effort ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Love you! <3 :)

Dog
2:05 AM
Thank you Causing Underflows Everywhere for causing underflows
I want to set up my own AD with Kerberos but I'm scared it'll be difficult
I don't like difficult, I'm a cat.

oh you know it's always a pleasure Cat :)

Dog
But then all my VMs and devices and Linux boxes can all share the same credentials

Bob
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere At the end of the day, you're limited by the remaining commit available. The problem of not having a page file is you restrict the commit available enough that it starts reserving unused physical RAM.
You can run with that if you want, but it's literally wasted resources.

Dog
Single sign-on, VPN, DirectAccess, RDP, the lot

@Bob OMG IT'S BY MARK!!!!!!!!!!!! Did Bryan help?

2:08 AM
I Am A Bot

@Dog omg I tried this... then I tried to set up roaming accounts and it all broke.

Dog
@MichaelFrank Roaming accounts or roaming user profiles?
The latter breaks a lot

user profiles.

Dog
Yeah, that's painful even in the best enterprise environments

Roaming user profiles and VDS are both insanely difficult to set up
Other than that, AD is pretty painless
And you can even use PowerShell to install it!

Dog
2:09 AM
@BenN I'm surprised you haven't figured out an easy way to de-pain it with Powershell

Hmm just to let you guys know I don't think I Am a bot is who you think he is

Isn't it already installed when you install Win Server?

You need to install the Directory Services role (not sure of the exact name) and then promote the machine to domain controller, but yeah, all the components ship with it
MDT can even do it at deployment time

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere no it's Becky.

2:12 AM
omg
I love Becky!
Apparently, this user prefers to keep an air of mystery about them. ooooooh!~

Dog
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Who do you think he is?

@IAmABot you provided an extensive answer to that one superuser question you answered with pictures and everything. Thank you for your contribution!

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I am a bot.

it must be Becky, JourneyMan is never wrong.
@IAmABot hello

I bet JMG has a list of peoples chat IDs and their associated personas.

2:15 AM
No. It's no it's Becky

No, I'm becky.

oh no. you're not Becky

@MichaelFrank only 3 people here have regular alt accoubtsm. 20 of them's dog.

you're becky . nice try though

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I am a bot

2:16 AM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere i am an advocate of having everything in ram too, and for quite some time did not use a paging file. Instead i uninstalled programs that SUCK think they own the whole machine, and "don't work well with others" :-) Eventually programs would Fail completely when there was no visable paging file created (sometimes the OS will make a psudo one anyway) . A few games, and some programs will not even run , if there is not some paging file set out in windows 7. so i make a small one.

@IAmABot yes yes keep repeating the same line until you get caught by a bot for "spamming" and removed perhaps when you can return and not be a bot

Bob
hm. whoops. I appear to have crashed an Azure VM by consuming RAM

oh I dont even uninstall programs I just make sure they have no way of starting

@Bob Windows or Linux?

Bob
@noitsbecky Windows

2:17 AM
@Bob nomnomnomnom

@Bob Huh
Linux's OOM killer is a clusterfuck and a half, but Windows is rather robust last I recall

@ noitsbecky Dog, is that you?

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere No, it's becky.

@noitsbecky I believe you meant to type flustercluck, now please do correct it before my eyes melt.

Obviously.

Bob
2:19 AM
@noitsbecky Yea. I think the hypervisor restarted it o.O
Linux overcommit is dumb.
Though it does insulate people who insist on not allocating swap *cough*

I think I need to kill ff to run rammap but I dont want to leave root access so I think no

Bob
...your system is in an almost hilariously broken state

total : 15GB, active: 500MB
oh no...
14.5GB of RAM are being wasted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob
somewhat relatedly, it's actually not possible to completely disable the page file on Azure because that requires a restart... and a restart will re-add the temp drive with a pagefile.

I NEED A PAGE FILE STAT
oh yeah
chkdsk is using 30MB / 14,000 MB of its commited memory

Bob
2:24 AM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere You're actually in a bit of an extreme situation because you're also running chkdsk... which tries to allocate sizeof(RAM) because it assumes it's the most important thing you're running.
Which lets it use as much memory as it can to fix your drive ASAP.

yes, that is the only logician, -system crash-

Dog
wtf is underflow doing

Bob
Normally that's not a problem because it can get paged out if something else needs it. And most of that is committed and unused anyway...

Dog
Other than underflowing his RAM

@Dog challenging the norm :-)

2:26 AM
I'm letting chkdsk run on a hard disk with bad sectors until it finishes while I wait for the client to pickup the phone to coordinate a purchase of a new one

Bob
In other word, your normal system state without chkdsk running is probably not quite as bad as >95% of your RAM sitting unused.

Dog
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Is this the same chkdsk we told you not to run several days ago?

in other words my normal system state is 4GB / 16 GB which is 20% usually

Bob
Personally, I'd still always recommend having a page file just to catch the overcommits and maximise disk cache
*shrug*

actually @Dog
let me show you a screenie

2:27 AM
a job for don quixote

Bob
Unrelatedly, I broke Azure again
Turns out Windows Server 2016 isn't too happy about me consuming all virtual memory
which makes Task Manager bug out
and Explorer menus fail to render
and cashed RAMMap too
lol

Dog
The super cute blonde girl who managed to sneak into my room without me noticing last night has a phone with a number pad :-o

@Dog she thought you could add the SMart Part :-)

Dog
My RAM usage

2:30 AM
@Bob , you have a process with an invalid process name running using the SYSTEM account. I advise you take all your belongings and run for the hills.

Bob
waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
why do I have 3 GB of page tables
O_O

@Dog my phone has such a number pad as well

@Dog but then discovered you were going for the Touch part instead

Bob
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere invalid process name? where?

that process you cutted out of the screen shot
oh yes the description is also invalid

Bob
2:32 AM

sorry my joke sucked

Bob
^ That's what happens when virtual memory is completely full :P

Dog

Bob
VM with 3.5 GB RAM and some 1.3 GB page file... I think the page file might've grown, but I can't check cause everything died.

Dog
I think I need to enlarge my pagefile

2:33 AM
a process called consume is launched that starts eating RAM of running processes starting with the low priority ones, freeing up memory in the process?

Dog
I have 10GB of free RAM but if I were to try and use more than 5GB stuff would crash

Bob
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Nope. consume is a test program that eats up all your virtual mem for a stress test.

@Dog I think you need to buy more RAM

Dog
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere 64GB is all I can afford right now

remember, keep the page file in the RAM. RAM is cheap enough these days.

Bob
2:34 AM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere That... is rather useless

Bob
You reserve RAM for page file space

Dog
!!tell 33306222 facepalm

Dog
@Bob Arguably Windows 10's RAM compression negates that anyway

Bob
2:35 AM
so your virtual memory = sizeof(RAM) + sizeof(pagefile) - sizeof(reserved(sizeof(pagefile))) = sizeof(RAM)
Unless you compress the pagefile in RAM. Which Windows 10 already does.
@Dog Yea, was just about to mention that.

14/16 = 0.875 so lets assume chkdsk uses 90% of the RAM. in order to keep my system usable I will need about 3GB of free RAM. that means 10% of my RAM needs to equal 3 GB, that means I need at least 32GB of RAM, that means I need to buy 2 more sticks and fill up my bays completely in order to not have a page file and use chkdsk regularly with the /R switch ticked

Bob
lol. I can't close the consume windows cause the Win10 UI has crashed and the close buttons broke.

Dog
Meta memory!

Bob
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere That's not how it works. Because chkdsk will always try to allocate all physical RAM. So chkdsk will just allocate 30 GB instead.
gg.

Dog
2:37 AM
lol

Bob
@Dog I don't think kvm can do that :(

Dog
@Bob Xenserver's memory overcommit is weaksauce anyway

Dog
Only VMWare does decent memory overcommit

but it somehow leaves a static amount of RAM. I can have chkdsk open for 8 hours but I can still run firefox and listen to music

Bob
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Eh. You could always test with 8. But there's better solutions...

remember the old days when a web broiwser used 100MB of RAM, and games used like 500mb-1gb well now all my games run with chkdsk but when watching videos FF runs out of memory! what a drastic change

Wow. SYN floods still work despite lots of ways to mitigate them.

Dog
VMWare has all the tricks: merging/deduplication/compression/sharing/balooning/swapping

It doesn't even seem to be a volumetric attack.

Bob
2:39 AM
> The attack follows us as we switch external IP

A system not protected against SYN floods can be taken offline with next to no traffic.

Dog
Does chkdsk really always use all your RAM? I've never noticed that before

Bob
fail.

Dog
But it does explain a few things

Bob
@Dog yea, I posted a link the other day. it's intentional as of 7
it's only in /R mode too
I think the idea is that /R means something is FUBAR and it just commits enough to make sure it has enough space for everything it might need to do
@bwDraco and they're blaming the ISP

Dog
2:41 AM
@Bob Ah
Just ran it in read-only mode and it just ate 100MB/sec for the first ten secs then stopped at 1GB

SYN floods are such a primitive form of DoS attack and I'm surprised it still works on live systems.

Bob
SYN floods can be trivially stopped at the firewall... just block all incoming connections.
I mean, it's not like they're hosting externally-accessible servers at a conference, are they?

Dog
@Bob Then you're just DoS'ing yourself

Bob
@Dog I assume they only really need outgoing

Dog
@Bob But someone needs to torrent those Linux ISOs!
Also, SYN floods can't touch me mwahaha

2:42 AM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere good luck making anyone care :-) Heck most times were just happy if they only use 1/2 the ram, and dont crash, leak, fail and full of buggs too . It is all that competition out there to get a program Out to the market , and failing as soon as possible :-)

I don't know about that Bob... the explanation they had barely made programming sense. It seemed pretty slapped on just so that they didnt have to go back and fix it. CHKDSK is really really really stupid. it keeps reading 4KB , then trying to read 132KB just to wait 30 seconds for a read error, when it could've realized by now it's wasting time and should just continuosly read 1 cluster at a time (4KB). or actually use its 64KB and 13KB reads more often.

if it actually was programmed intelligently I wouldnt be into ... what day is this? well procexp says system up time 2 days 7 hours. so

Dog
Mainly because OpenWRT has syn flood mitigation on by default as one of its most basic features

Bob
@Dog ballooning is a funny one

@Psycogeek hahah :D

Bob
sure, lemme just eat up RAM within the guest and stuff up all your reporting tools!
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I think chkdsk was written with software corruption in mind.

Dog
2:43 AM

Don't get me wrong, I've taken a hacking class in college and know it's pretty much the most primitive type of DoS attack out there. It takes very little traffic (literally kilobits a second) to disable a system not protected against a SYN attack.

Bob
You're not really supposed to run it on a disk with hardware failure.

Dog
@Bob Ahem!

Bob
You're getting read errors. It's long past time to abandon chkdsk and grab a ddrescue image first.

clearly haha
what do root access users all have in common?

Dog
2:44 AM
@Bob: Funny thing is, Linux handles balooning really well, whereas Windows doesn't
04/11/2016 01:56:12 [qasdfdsaq@s4a.qasdfdsaq.com:~] $ free -m
             total used free shared buffers cached
Mem:          2293        695       1597          5        131        398
-/+ buffers/cache:        164       2128
Swap:         1951          0       1951
Linux actually reports the balooned memory as effectively being hot-unplugged from the system

use free -k please. karrots are good for you

Bob
@Dog huh. interesting.

Dog
aka I've ballooned 1.7GB out of my 4GB, Linux now reports 2.3GB "total" instead of 4GB total, 1.7GB+ used

o0'

Dog
It's quite clever. Windows just adds the ballooned amount to the "Used" pool

2:46 AM
oh you guys starred 2 of my posts

My router has SYN flood protection built in.

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere well some of us have backups :-) that disk would be in the trash first, , , then it might be discovered that it was just the cable .

Dog
@Psycogeek Not me! Mwhaahaha
Oh wait, shit
brb making backup

@Dog you aint got nothing worth saving :-)

Dog
OK what the fuck is this
Oh hey there's even a what is this button

2:49 AM
...and my router has this in the logs amongst the noise:
> [DoS Attack: TCP/UDP Chargen] from source: 184.105.139.113, port 42375, Wednesday, November 02, 2016 22:43:34

yeah I move this cable around a lot, in gets pushed and pulled and squished by text books and groceries in my bag

Actually neither do I (have anything worth saving) If i put all my data up for auction, ahh they would give me $10 for it. But damnit i will take it to my grave.

oooooo @Dog you're becky arent you!

Any explanation for this? Is an attacker trying to execute a CHARGEN amplification attack?

both of you use bad words :)

Bob
2:50 AM
@Dog Not sure if it's because Windows doesn't support hot-remove or if it's VMware not doing it properly. Hot-add is definitely supported. msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/…

dont worry Ill tell the russians to take out the modem sitting at 184.105.139.113

Bob
@Dog Windows does support hot-remove with Hyper-V windowsitpro.com/hyper-v/…

The Character Generator Protocol (CHARGEN) is a service of the Internet Protocol Suite defined in RFC 864 in 1983 by Jon Postel. It is intended for testing, debugging, and measurement purposes. The protocol is rarely used, as its design flaws allow ready misuse. A host may connect to a server that supports the Character Generator Protocol on either Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or User Datagram Protocol (UDP) port number 19. Upon opening a TCP connection, the server starts sending arbitrary characters to the connecting host and continues until the host closes the connection. In the UD...
> UDP CHARGEN is commonly used in denial of service attacks. By using a fake source address the attacker can send bounce traffic off a UDP CHARGEN application to the victim. UDP CHARGEN sends 200 to 1,000 times more data than it receives, depending upon the implementation. This "traffic multiplication" is also attractive to an attacker because it obscures the attacker's IP address from the victim.

Dog
@Bob I can even hot plug CPUs!

Bob
> This is a different behavior from dynamic memory which used the kernel mode device driver to request memory from the OS and that request had to be fulfilled even if the OS had to page to disk to meet the demand. With hot-remove it is not possible to remove more memory than is currently available.

2:52 AM
how do you hot plug cpus?
@bwDraco , so far I've linked that IP to

scan-03j.shadowserver.org - The Shadowserver Foundation
The Shadowserver Foundation. If you are looking at this page, then more than likely, you noticed a scan coming from this server across your network and/or poking at a

Dog
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Use your hands
Grab the CPU, make sure it's hot, pull

no that's hot unplug cpus
I want to know how to hot plug cpus

Shadowserver is legit but why am I seeing this sort of traffic?

Dog
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere That's how

It looks like you're trying to know how to hot plug cpus.

Would you like help?

Dog
2:53 AM
First you have to grab it while it's hot, then make sure you plug it into the next machine while it's still hot

Bob
@bwDraco Because they're probably running an internet-wide scan?

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo gotcha. where do I find a cpu?

Bob
@Dog Grab it by the *****? :P

please no racism @Bob

Guess how many tabs I have open

what a mess of processes, you should use ff to have all that bundled in one process :D
Please run jvm -Jmbm500 so

Sigh.
One of my co-workers dosen't know what a Kensington lock is.

oh I forgot what that is

3:01 AM
wut?

@Dog all of them

There's a small rectangular slot on most laptops designed to allow the attachment of a security cable or other theft-deterrent device.

Many monitors, desktops, printers, and other larger electronics have this K-Slot, too.

3:02 AM
He's kinda a transitional it guy. Lacks culture :p

@JourneymanGeek tell him to go on root access and highlight kensington lock and right click and click 'Search DuckDuckGo for "Kensington lock"' and tell him it will tell him what that is

Naw. There's a dozen here.

sometimes external hard disks do too

I have one of those security cables, but it sees very little use.

we used it with the school laptop since it was expensive

3:04 AM
We.... Forgot the key

I have the master key, but it sees very little use :-)

it's okay just borrow someone
's wire cutter and pray to goodness it's not one of those new locks that spray ink at you when yo utry to hack them open

It is much better to put ITunes on it , and use the "Find your laptop without a battery in it" App

oh the BIOS has the theft protection?

That's the K-Slot on my laptop.

3:07 AM
whats the green angel wings button do?
why do you have a usb 2.0 port?

Dog
Duck duck QUACK

yup you can quack your search queries

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere That's the power button.
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere This is the only one of the four USB ports that's USB 2.0. It's intended for use with a mouse.

ooooookay then :)

@bwDraco Sooo did you get that lappie back together in one piece yet? or still waiting for the sauce?

3:10 AM
@Psycogeek Done, and it was easier than expected.

what flavour are you waiting on

@allquicatic So, I replaced the thermal paste a few hours ago. I'm seeing a slight advantage, but I assume it'll grow as the paste sets (it's AS5).

ahh the paste doesnt get any better :-) dont know why they portray that myth, it only will self-improve burn-in etc if it thins out , which takes much pressure and heat. is there less throttling? does your game (whatever it was) get 2FPS more or anything? Placebo
did you do the CPU too? as all i saw was you working on the GPU?

3:16 AM
Didn't do the CPU.

this is what i have been spending much and much time on

If i could just get @DavidPostill to finish putting the carpet in, that room would be set.
we got more paint on the floor than the walls this time.
I think a better adjustment of the shape charge explosives would do it, that and keeping people from stepping in the roller tray and paint bucket like the 3 Stooges
I am of course DIY because: "If you want it done right, you can't afford the professional who does that."
I told them to stand back and wear a hat because i paint like a hurricane.
they said hurricanes dont paint?
Well yea but they fling crap all over the place and nobody is safe.

@SENTHILKUMARS You're probably better off asking on the Main Site
@SENTHILKUMARS Possibly relevant: stackoverflow.com/questions/18563847/…
@SENTHILKUMARS Room etiquette here says that you should only pop in and randomly ask questions if you are a regular contributor here.
We aren't your go-to-anytime free tech support team
Chat is for off-topic stuff.
@JourneymanGeek Did... I explain that correctly?

@SENTHILKUMARS room etiquette on most places here's a little different from IRC. Questions belong on the main site. Chats more for things less fitting the QA format. That open command looks odd tho
Eh. Chat regulars don't ask questions. We complain loudly :p

Thanks @Rahul2001.
I will ask it in main site.

heh. I'm supposed to know what's my workplace's plan for me by the end of the day

Bob
@HackToHell it's probably using the /dev/random source without enough entropy

I just lied about my server experience ;p
vaguely

@Bob aha, so just a bad time to be reading off it huh
cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
Gives me 184
Other servers give me ~700
Localhost is 900
hmm weird
