9:00 AM
I think so
Why not take one for the team and try it? ;p

@HackToHell all i know is we had run windows setups right out of hard disks before , after just copying the files to them. but that was rather long ago. the ram breakout the boot around, the install all the same.

@Psycogeek Stupid thing is, that this is on a fresh Windows 10 install

@NateKerkhofs but not a standard one :-) didnt someone mention slight changes , that (hell i donno) might skew the results some?
@HackToHell The importat aspect of running off of odd media then was , where the copied files went, what it goes back to on re-boot, and reboot again. Because I had to do that proper , with only temporary cd/dvd & HD boot priorities , I almost knew what i was doing already:-),
ok so i scwered it up a few times, but it was NEW , it was FREE and damn-it i got it installed.

9:20 AM
someone just mentioned "Aborted Unicorn" on a forum I follow and I suddenly realized how that would not stand out at all in something like The Witcher

9:32 AM
@Psycogeek ah
How long does the 8.1 -> 10 thing takes ?

Average ~6 hours for all the "trying" to do it, average ~20 minutes to do it correct :-)

@HackToHell If everything works out, under an hour

if everything works out xD

lol
I once spent over a day on a linux install

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Only once?

9:43 AM
@Bob: Oh, yeah
I mean, to get the damn thing booting
Was trying to move a wubi install to a real drive
and things went badly
Got it working, eventually

Every damn time I update ubuntu, I have to spend atleast a day on it to get it to work

lol
My typical install is quicker
Not much additional software tho
Kubuntu + Firefox + qbitorrent for desktops lighttpd, mysql,php-fpm for web servers

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That too
(spent probably >40 hours over a week ironing out issues with zfs boot...)

Also, NOT use the local mirrors
@Bob: heh. I go fairly basic on stuff like that
typically ext3/4
(and well, my home linux boxen are essentially disposable)

@Bob ZFS, stuff that you should document in blogs that sit at the top of google searches , to save another 10,000 peoples weeks .

Jun 30 at 21:49, by Bob
I'll write this whole thing up properly into a blog post or something at some point... already have it documented thanks to JMG :P

Bob
My "blog" is utterly empty
Actually, I don't think the container is even running.

@Bob Mine's mostly empty

Bob
> 502 Bad Gateway
nup

got 2 things currently being written

Bob
9:56 AM
It's prettttty far down my todo list

(windows 10 first impressions, and a piece on my backup setup)
journeymangeek.com/index.php/… was the most recent one I wrote ;p

@JourneymanGeek kewl
hey wait , how do you read that in 4K ees all tiny fonts.
at least it is bigger than a casio watch manuels fonts

Bob
@Psycogeek font scaling

First round of windows update finished
now for the second round

the dark theme is nice

10:12 AM
@Psycogeek: Its set at 150%
I can set it up to 200
I actually wish I could set my secoond screen at less than 100% so they'd match
(hey, windows 10 has per screen manual scaling again!)
@Psycogeek: Its a 'stock'ish theme other than the logo

(4k monitor) "The USB ports shut down when it goes on standby" as in when the computer puts only the monitor in standby ? that sucks , mine (2.0) only does that when i hit the power pannel switch all the monitors and audio reside on. and i have to remember not to freaking hit that when printing , as most of the things plugged into the monitor are the long term parked items , because of the access to it.

Yup. So you can't really use it for charging, or stuff that needs to be on all the time
Also, you can set it to keep the power light off when its switched on
Which is great.
(I mean, its obvious when your monitor is on right?)

I want More pictures , you know i only look at the picture anyways .

lol
I post them here!
You guys have seen like ...4-5 different setups of mine

I want to see the base , and any pivot and height adjustments , the back pannel, and more stuff on the screen how it would kinda look (even if it would be hard to see without being there)

10:19 AM
@Psycogeek: ahh yeah
@Psycogeek: er... 360 degree adjustment, good tilt/pan...
(also, that was a phone cam pic. ._.)
@Psycogeek: the U and P series dells have fantastic adjustability

So, bare essentials installed: Norton 360, Chrome, Display drivers
now I just need to install Dropbox and 1Password

bottom panel

it is really funny, when you say it is all yellow :-) or was the other one all blue :-)

@Psycogeek: Its correct. The typical monitor is caliberated too blue
The stand slots into that square space (and you can buy a dual monitor stand)

@JourneymanGeek now that is a great pic. that belongs in the blog/review.

10:24 AM
There's a cover over that too
Its not mine ;p
@Psycogeek: Its not one of mine ;p
There's another rear port

@JourneymanGeek sweet
The strangest things turn me on sigh
Whee installing windows 10
moved all the work that needs to be done to a remote server so even if everything dies, I can work from a live fs :D

@JourneymanGeek standard VESA mount? I learned that Acronm/idea late after coolly having them on monitors , then finnaly realising i could swap bases (with similar weight monitors)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek correct is entirely subjective

@Bob: True, but this has a piece of paper saying its correct ;p

pro tip: it's not just your password you can make a typo in. usernames are also vulnerable

10:29 AM
@Psycogeek: its a dell standard
NOT vesa but there ought to be adaptors

@Bob correct would have a CRi index and a thing called a spectrum :-)
@JourneymanGeek it looks like the same thing?

@Bob: ran through the windows caliberation thing by eye. No changes needed
@Psycogeek: no screw holes ;p

@JourneymanGeek ohh, then i dont have VESA , crap, just dell intermingling.

Its a thing like this
@Bob: On the other hand, I can't even get the gamma right on the other two
ahh
there's vesa holes behind the mounting plate

@JourneymanGeek wait there are screws? 4 ?

10:35 AM
No screws
snaps in

in the monitor look at the back picture you just posted? sure they are not the right length and all, nothing a trip to the hardware store and a dremmel wont fix

lol
or an appropriate snap in panel

I never actually bought a vesa thing, but it always looks like the holes are in about the same place no?

@JourneymanGeek the only other thing i wanted to leech out of you about that specific 4k, is how that works out when you are at 4K res desktop, and run game in 1920

10:41 AM
@Psycogeek: its fine. I run QHD
as long as its divisible, its fine

@JourneymanGeek in theroy , but in reality and practical use and when you actually do it, is all that counts :-)
So you have gamed in 4K , my first thought is easy to render games would have tiny texts in full res ?

I think those things should scale
I need at least a 970 or better to do proper 4k gaming tho ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eww

@Bob: every recent dell uses that
Works ok

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, I guess it depends on the type
the desktop monitor ones are usually halfway decent

10:46 AM
The P series, U series...

Bob
the laptop screen bevel snap-ins... eww
take it off once and it'll never sit right again
and that's if you don't destroy the screen in the pricess

@Bob: My old FP2007s at work have the same basic design

Bob
or snap the bevel entirely

@Bob: Oh, the stands?
Removable

then the opposite almost, running super 3D , ohh i know Watch dogs ? or what was that, run in 1/4 res? have you actually done that yet?

10:48 AM
They do want people to upgrade to 2,3 or 4 monitor setups ;p
Naw I can't do the whole super-sampling thing
My video card is a bottleneck here ;p

@Bob the fully adjustable (height and tilt) bases are spring loaded, and you have to be really carefull installing them, well actually uninstalling them, when they are "loaded" but the snap in snap out, works great, to toss it in the car and all.

They work pretty well

Bob
@Psycogeek yea, I've had them before

(monitors are the only thing dell I'll ever buy ;p)

I started with bases like that only because i hated the cheap flimsey bases most monitors had. Really i never profile a monitor cept to prove i can, i do height adjust a lot (but you can put books under:-) More than anything when the printer is rocking the desk :-) the monitor is still.

10:54 AM
lol
@Psycogeek: I have a pair of small decorative wooden crates under my 24"
its a lower end dell so.... it dosen't have the nice adjustable stand

@JourneymanGeek but did you run one of the (say) assasins creed on it in HD res (low for that thing)

@Psycogeek: I've run dishonoured at merely 4x HD res ;p
Rather than 8x
Hopefully they'll fix up batman by the time I do a video card upgrade ;)

Ok well that is harder to render 3D game, unlike say Minecraft or tropico, or some dungeon crawler , so how well does that work? Say you run a 1920 display and play, and then run that diplay in the exact same res , there is no difference in speed then?

Minecraft just looks bigger ;p

cause it is 27"
Scenario : You have a 4K monitor and Only EVER run it at 1920x1080 (or1200) , logically the video card itself is not doing any more work than a 1920 monitor ?

Bob
11:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...I rather like their membrane keyboards

the Monitor itself has to do some light 4-1 interpolation, is there zero negative effect there?
Then finnally , when never leaving 1920 resolution in the 4k monitor, what is the visual effects of the 4X pixels , and tiny RGB cells?

Nope.
Er. I have no idea. Shouldn't be too bad tho

the 27" 1920x1080 monitor here , for blindy the landlord , when i sit at the same distance as my 24" the "cell walls" pixel size thing is really distracting "I see Squares"

11:24 AM
If a 4K monitor would do everything a 1920 monitor does too, without any issues Cleartype sub pixel rendering? and the pixels are so small that everything is cleaner. Then even if my use would be at 1920 most of the time, it would still be a good improvment?

11:40 AM
"I actually decided to test this yesterday when installing, so when I was finished upgrading to Windows 10 I extracted the new product key from my registry and then I tried to do a clean install using that key. Sadly the Windows 10 installer doesn't recognize that key as valid." superuser.com/questions/947461/…
No no this cant be.

Ug, this is like the 4th DVD I'm burning to fix this Windows thing

@NateKerkhofs and i was hoping everything would have worked .

First was a Windows 10 ISO, then a GParted Live DVD, then a Windows 7 without eicfg file
This time, it's office though
office professional plus 2013

you are installing all this stuff ? but have not achieved upgrade yet? is that a lot of work for something not yet at the stage you want to finish?

I'm not sure myself
I think it's time to start installing Windows 10 now
oh, wait, can't yet

11:49 AM
How about a clone backup? so you can pop back in at this point at anytime?
Me i always do a "clean install Clone" so i never have to do that again :-)

Does Windows 7 have a default way of doing that, or do I need software for that?

@NateKerkhofs windows has a backup method. and it does restore from a recovery disk or partition stuff. but i would never be caught dead using it. lots of people have had problems when they went to restore.
My opinion is that when i need to restore, shit isnt going to be working right :-) well duhh . So i do my OS partition backup when outside of said system, so when i am STUCK outside of said system, i just undo (restore) the same way i created the backup.
Aconis has a free clone imaging capability that is free if somehwere in your system you have a WD hard drive WD acronis ,

dd
clonezilla

Problem with free WD acronis (just like the stupid system) if your WD drive is no longer found . . . well. so I eventually bought acronis, but still only use it from the boot cd.
Then many of the disk manufactures have Full Disk clone software for free, the pont being to change a hard drive.
And all the free cloning stuff, that runs off a linux disk, and whatever is on a HIrens or something
And Ghost , which was wonderfull then it was horribly obsoleted and ineffective, and may have made a comeback, but i wont be using it again.
My method is to create an "image File" of the OS partition. plus a clone parition to a seperate disk for Dual booting the same as backup.
Image files , can be compressed, and are easy to plop about anywhere, and have them hanging around all over the place, should even multiple things go wrong.
a compressed image file of a clean install of win7pro64 is ~5gig, post update is ~7-8gig
returning to a clean install image file for my system, takes 5 minutes max, including booting to the cd and finding it and everything. it takes me that long to friggen type in that damn key :-)

12:14 PM
Do I need to have the Windows 10 GWX.exe running and my computer marked as "reserved" to be able to get the upgrade?

I do not think you need the button, or reservations at all, just any pre-requisite updates. and legit installed 7 or 8.1
I think even most of the pre-requisite stuff was all about the poorly implemented windows update stuff anyways.

Okay, then I'm just going to try and install

but what about the backup, are you going to trust the installer to (it does) decide it doesnt work and try to retract most of it?

AT this point, I just am out of options

with a backup, you can go hog wild, beat on it, change it, try crasy things, restore it and try more crasy things

12:23 PM
ahh joy
My backups broke

The only difference between what I've done so far and a backup is that the backup is just 2 hours of patching
I am prepared to go through that again if necesary

@JourneymanGeek did you verify it :-)

@Psycogeek: I can't make new backups for some reason

Okay, the installer has started
time to go do some chores while I'm waiting

12:28 PM
meh. I can try reinstalling
Tho, I THINK the issue is with the NAS and windows 10 for some reason

@JourneymanGeek and which software?

vem endpoint backup

like you can search, but i find this quick, as if it is common veeam.com/kb2057

did that
Also, I uninstalled and can't reinstall it ;p

yay at windows 10, video drivers are fucked up
Will post screenies after at proper resolution

12:43 PM
VEM ugg they say there, wait for us to get our stuff together, and dang if it looks like they have every intention of doing so, that is sooo refreshing

So far, looks like the installation worked just fine
It's now on the "this won't take long screen" where it installs my apps

@NateKerkhofs dont forget to get those verifyable pictures of it installing , someday you will want them for posterity :-)

@Psycogeek I think by the time my godchild has grown up enough to understand it, they won't understand it

I want to see them
show me sucess

well, looks like all that time spent installing dropbox, chrome, 1password and the rest was wasted
nothing has survived

12:47 PM
u h hu huuuu ooooh :-(

win10 installed on my desktop without a hitch @Bob - seems it upgrades fine if you have an ISO

Q: Windows 10: Laptop display refuses to turn off

DragonLordI've just upgraded to Windows 10 Pro on my laptop and now the display refuses to turn off even if I lock the session or after the configured timeout (15 minutes on AC, 3 minutes on battery). The Monoff utility causes the screen to switch off, but it comes back on immediately, suggesting spurious...

oh and VEM is changing thier slogan for a while , from "it Just Works" to "It will Work Again"

Why can't I install Geforce experience anymore?

@HackToHell: I warned about that.

12:53 PM
@allquixotic pictures or it doesnt count, show us your . . . start menu , yea thats the ticket.

As no answer/attention, I am planning to start (small) bounty for that. Any suggestion? @JourneymanGeek

Long time since I last had to manually install a Nvidia driver without help of Geforce Experience

@Pandya: I'd wait a say or two more ;p
@Psycogeek lupinenet.com/10.png There you go ;p

@JourneymanGeek I didn't understand exactly (what is your mean)

Okay, Geforce installer seems to work now

1:04 PM
@JourneymanGeek ok now were talking, that one whole lotta pixies :-)

:P my speaking language isn't English (so requesting simple english)

@Pandya I think it's too soon to bounty.

@JourneymanGeek ok

@Pandya he meant wait a DAY or two, not a SAY or two :-)

@allquixotic oh! now I understood why I had not understood exactly!
:D

1:06 PM
Ahh. Damn my paws

As soon as dropbox has been installed, I'm having a SS as well

good bye

compresssion and destruction (high loss re-coding) proxies sucked back in 1990 and were mostly abandoned. would have to be really desperate for bandwith to use that again.
I dont know how much interest it would gain

Actually, apparently my Dropbox folder, and thus my 1password folder, weren't removed

1:17 PM
wtf Microsoft Edge? why are you reporting yourself as Chrome 42 (oh and btw Edge)?
hnnnnnnnnnng

All hands on deck.

@JourneymanGeek yep :D
Arrgh i want my 8.1 start menu back
This is fucking cluttered

there's my Start10 menu :D

Tablet mode might work there.
I just use search

That's done as well for me
Now the long tail: installing all the applications I've lost

1:25 PM
my system is more "lived-in", and I have more software installed, than 99.9% of users, and the upgrade went smoothly for me. \o/

Q: Windows 10: Laptop display refuses to turn off

DragonLordSystem: Clevo P157SM (Sager NP8255-S). I've just upgraded to Windows 10 Pro on my laptop and now the display refuses to turn off even if I lock the session or after the configured timeout (15 minutes on AC, 3 minutes on battery). It doesn't matter whether the laptop is plugged in. The Monoff ut...

Any ideas?

@allquixotic great. question how much space total do you figure your Virtual studio 2013 package is? SU user with 96g SSD was running out of space, VS was a lot of it.

@allquixotic well, I'm not the average user. I had an SSD upgrade where apparently something went wrong with my system reserved partition, and I had to first reinstall Windows 7 from scratch, TWICE

@Psycogeek I don't really keep track of disk space; I have 8 TB of it.
@DragonLord Other than updating drivers? No. I'll test on my laptop tonight and see if it does the same, but I doubt it will.

@allquixotic oh he was looking for a way to have it work on another disk, told it where it could go in install and it did what it wanted :-) par.

Bob
1:30 PM
@allquixotic eh...
@allquixotic I still want to do a clean install, maybe on an SSD.
Looking at the 850 EVO (~$250 for 500 GB)

@NateKerkhofs you now have OSX :-)

@Psycogeek I would star that if it weren't hideously offensive to say such a thing to a Diehard windows fan

maybe we call it WOSX

Bob
@allquixotic Hey it actually lists feature levels now! :D

1:34 PM
scrolling in Chrome is way smoother
but to be fair I turned on the experimental hw rasterization

Bob
@allquixotic Chrome doesn't enable smooth scrolling by default
FF has had it enabled for years now, and it's mostly fine... still issues occasionally and it sucks over RDP

@NateKerkhofs What is NLD (system notification tray ares)

@Psycogeek Nederlands (Dutch)
It's my system language
Also, just saw that Happy Birthday wish and noticed I hadn't starred it yet

It's bloody crappy for me :(
Should I be switching on cortana ?

ah crap, I can't activate my Office Professional Plus 2013. It tells me the key is wrong

1:45 PM
Anyone read through the privacy stuff ?

okay, then I'll just use Thunderbird for my mails
oh, right, Windows 10 has a mail app

@HackToHell what is ? looks good.

@Psycogeek The start menu
The programs are too small
I liked it stretched out

What does this mean? i beat chrome (using 5x memory)
I followed @allquixotic link peacekeeper.futuremark.com/… but it did not show his stored results, sooo i pushed de button.
I kinda feel sorry for that ipad now :-(

2:04 PM
Kraken JS benchmarks:
Firefox 39: 1152.3ms
Firefox Developer Edition 41.0a2: 1100.4ms
Internet Explorer 11: 2006.6ms (no wonder why...)
Microsoft Edge: 1080.7ms (yeah!)

Chrome 44.0.2403.125 = 4216 ohh, nope , Going to have to OC to get to that chrome

why can't I chat?
oh, now it works

A moment ago, I got a bunch of "an unknown error has occured"
I refreshed the page, and it's fixed

it is pre-releace they will fix it before it gets releaced :-)

2:11 PM
I have to honestly say that having an OS that actually supports dual monitor setups works A LOT better with them than one that doesn't have it

I had 2 monitors in XP , worked fine? what big changes we got here stickey corners?

No, a taskbar on the second monitor
which was one of my biggest gripes with my dual monitor setup on Windows 7

Ahh yes that is nicely done, but a freeware 3rd party program has done that for , well xp
microsft and apple invent everything :-) actually GLass effects on the desktop existed in hydrovision ATI (now amd) before microsoft even thought of it.

Bob
@Psycogeek Not gonna run any benchmarks right now. Background CPU usage is a tad high from the compression task.

@Psycogeek Still, default support built-in to the OS is still better than having to bandaid patch it in

2:20 PM
@Bob I think this benchmark was not very taxing :-) my gpu and cpu didnt even wake up half the time . I suppose that is the 2D , which has not been a high GPU priority.

Bob

wow.

@Bob what did you order?

Bob
@NateKerkhofs Stuff ;P

kinky stuff?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI_HydraVision Spelling correct HydraVision. Many headed greek monster , Not Hydro Water Phht , and all this time , i thought it was about water , like transparent water.

Bob
2:27 PM
@NateKerkhofs I'll leave it up to your imagination.
(Does Amazon even sell that kind of stuff?)
(I'm afraid to search. It'll spam my mailbox.)

@Bob It hasnt been to the grand canyon yet .

@Bob Amazon has so much kindle literotica (a lot of it themed around werecreatures and -vehicles)
I'm fairly sure they got something like massage oil and insertion toys as well

Bob
@NateKerkhofs Oh yea, the legendary 55 gal drum

so yeah, Amazon has kinky stuff

Bob
Shipping it here would probably cost more money than I have.

2:31 PM
55 gal drum? Is that like the 40 virgins Muslims get for blowing themselves up?
A barrel containing 55 different women?

Bob
@NateKerkhofs hehe, it was actually the first google result (NSFW?) for 55 gallon drum amazon

@Bob a 55 gallon drum of lube? The person who manages to sell that must be a very slick salesman

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I actually find the new folder icons kinda ugly.

yeah ;p
Funny story
Friend of mine had his laptop stolen 2 years ago
Police find it...
and apparently the laptop and everything else hasn't been touched
Like, he turns it on, and same stuff he was last working on was there

Bob
2:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek that's what they want you to think :P

Octane:
Firefox 39: 29411
Firefox Developer Edition 41.0a2: 30624
Internet Explorer 11: 16228
Microsoft Edge: 30893

Bob
@DragonLord Got results for Chrome & Opera?

Sorry, don't run any of these.

Bob
(In theory, Opera uses Blink. In practice, I'm curious how its performance compares.)
@DragonLord :)

2:46 PM
I have to say, even though it took me an entire day to install it, Windows 10 was worth it
2

Bob
(I keep Chrome for testing purposes, and ... I think I have 11.5 of Opera installed because I never bothered to remove it.)

Never mind, rerunning Octane with asm.js support enabled.

Bob
:23111151 In theory, asm.js can run on any JS engine.
It just won't get the performance benefits.
Well, that's what I gather from "strict subset".
Maybe that's not quite true :\
> Q. Is asm.js a new language?
A. No, it's just (a subset of) JavaScript. An asm.js program will behave identically whether it is run in an existing JavaScript engine or an ahead-of-time (AOT) compiling engine that recognizes and optimizes asm.js—except for speed, of course!
Yup.

It would dramatically drag down the whole score because it's expected to be compiled AOT.

Bob
@DragonLord It would drag down the score, yes, but I would consider that perfectly reasonable.
It doesn't matter if it's expected to be compiled AOT.
For a useful benchmark, you must assume that the user will want to run these programs.
Think of asm.js as an optional optimisation.
Just an optimisation, and like any other JS optimisation it must be considered when running any benchmark.
Browser A might have faster array handling than browser B. Browser C might have explicit asm.js optimisation while browser D does not. It's exactly the same situation.
Although you could argue that that code is written specifically for one browser...

2:54 PM
@DragonLord The JS speed would probably be the most important one for my browsing, with these script things everyfreaking where now, and really slowing things down. When i have scripts off some locals load like 20 times faster, some of course are 95% dependant on script and nothing without it.

Microsoft Edge with asm.js enabled: 34861
MandreelLatency: 124630 (!)
Firefox gets 36656 on the same test.
No wonder why people say Microsoft Edge is fast.

Intel's mirror sucks

the speed at which dancing internet bunnies are able to go on the browser, has little value :-)
