12:00 AM
yeah whatever. Full of tower block hotels and drunks

Was it a mod?

@JourneymanGeek I know. Doesn't stop us being curious as to what is going on ... ;)

@qasdfdsaq Cause I'm a mod.
I see dead people more information than you do.

Yeah but someone requesting a password reset, who will by definition not be logged in, doesn't reveal any personal information about who they are
At best you'll see what IP made the requests, and maybe match that up to someone else's account, assuming that IP has been used by another account

@qasdfdsaq IP addresses sounds like a good guess.

12:03 AM
@qasdfdsaq yup

So you can see everyone's IPs?
:-o

@qasdfdsaq I'm a mod. ;p

Then again, I can see IPs of all users everywhere I'm a mod too, so it's not exactly unusual

Of course. That's how rate limiting works ...

I'm an especially trusted user.
@DavidPostill actually, rate limiting for most part is automated.

12:04 AM
@DavidPostill Yeah but that's usually done by servers, not mods.

Yes, but it is IP based

And if recorded, is most likely in server logs only accessible to sysops

A good chunk of moderation stuff (question bans, answer bans, and spam blocks by IP) quite literally handles itself.

IP addresses are presumably also used to identify sock puppets ...

You won't be finding any of my socks by IP address

12:06 AM
You are too smart ;)
I'm barefoot, I don't have any socks

socks? I have booties
(somewhere. Made sure to hide them)

Wimp!

Yeah, I have access to like three dozen completely different IP blocks in different counties from right here. And that's not counting the likes of Tor or public proxies
Boot puppets?

Oh, I have aibobot.
In theory I use that to see things as a low rep user.

I wonder what the terms and conditions say about sock puppets.
I haven't actually read them
And what do people use sock puppets for anyway.

12:11 AM

Oh, the convention here is as long as there's no crossvoting (and preferably its clear its the same user) its cool.

entertaining the kids what else :-)

In theory @ChatBotJohnCavil is a sock of @allquixotic and one of the security.se users has 2-3 users all with bear avas ;p

Wait someone just posted a LMGTFY comment
On meta.

cute. Flag ;p

12:12 AM
I guess the LMGTFY block doesn't apply to meta?
Well it was Tom
And I I thought the only thing you could do with sock puppets was crossvoting

Not really. I don't actually know why the bear has seperate accounts ;p

If I had sock puppets the only thing I could think of using them for is to upvote my own awesome answers when nobody else will

@qasdfdsaq which of course means your answers are shitty enough that only you could love them ;p
3

That's not what my unsung hero badge says!

@JourneymanGeek You know more than me. :)

12:19 AM
@TomWijsman He knows more than the NSA. That's why he's hiding out in an an Asian country with no extradition treaty with the US

Just a geek on a journey, move along...
@qasdfdsaq No point in blocking it if you can generate a short URL for it anyway.

@TomWijsman Yeah but it was specifically blocked on the main site(s)

Doesn't random know that the answer is supposed to be the closer? :(

@TomWijsman have you had any runins with any users recently?
@qasdfdsaq actually, singapore would quite happily hand me over to the americans.
We're like best buds and all that

@qasdfdsaq Yeah, with good reason, it's not so friendly towards new users.

12:24 AM
@TomWijsman do you think that random was expecting a 4 page rant, with blaming, complaining, ending with some begging and pleading?

@TomWijsman that's the tricky bit about being a mod. I do, but I can't tell you what I know. Yet I need to handle this ;p
(so I pinged a CM)

@Psycogeek Perhaps a story like the one on his profile. Starting with "In the beginning, I made a profile on Super User. ..." :)
@JourneymanGeek Not that I know off, look at my network wide activity and you'll see I'm pretty inactive lately.

Yeah, thought so too.
So wierd.

From what I recall in the last week very infrequent chatter here and I answered one question.

@JourneymanGeek But you know who the user is?
And the user has specifically targeted only Tom's account?
Maybe he just picked a random account to see how many times the button would work before it blocked

12:27 AM
1. I cannot confirm nor deny that
2. No other complaints so far.
I only know about stuff like this when people tell me.

You said earlier you know who did it. So that would mean you know who ... did it

@qasdfdsaq The problem with that being that my account is not easy to pick randomly given its inactivity.

@qasdfdsaq I've not actually said that

Okay, it's in the top users and u might see me at the top right here in chat. But other than that...

@TomWijsman yup. Trying to understand the why.

12:28 AM
Randomly by definition doesn't relate to activity, they could have just used an RNG to generate a UID

But if you look for accounts that have the e-mail address listed in the profile, mine might be among the first.

@JourneymanGeek "Wierd, I know who did this, but not why."

@qasdfdsaq If you want to test one user you're not going to fire up a RNG, you just pick the first you can come across.

@JourneymanGeek Oh?
31 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
Wierd, I know who did this, but not why.

12:30 AM
finnne
Tho its conjecture at this point.
annnyway
I've pinged a CM, and there's not much I can do at this point other than that.

Do I hear the sound of backpeddling?

;p
Naw
Just people asking me too many questions about something I'd rather leave vague for now.

@JourneymanGeek: Only reason I'm reaching out at all is to somewhat try to ensure this does not repeat in the future. Rate limiting is one way. If it's an actual offender that tries to do it over that's another way.

@TomWijsman Oh, you're directly involved and I don't mind telling you more or less what's up.

Not really worried about a stolen account or to be denied my inbox.

12:32 AM
I wonder if we could blackmail a less conscientious mod into giving us the info

so for all we know there may have been many other victoms?

@Psycogeek If they don't come up and let us know, there's no way to check

@JourneymanGeek What do you mean? Yes, I've received those 70 mails.

@TomWijsman that its suspecious, and that I've pinged a CM with the information I can't share here.

I guess he means there's no automated system that flags when there's been an excessive number of password reset attempts on an account

12:34 AM
yup
nor a manual one to go "hey, can we have all the users who have reset their passwords more than 10 times in a day?"

@JourneymanGeek Yeah; if anything, I would've expected this to happen in the past when I was more active.

When you're very inactive and suddenly see your inbox full, it becomes fishy.

I'd expect someone more active to get targetted.
annnnd

@TomWijsman fishey, i would be running around waving my hands in the air, and changing all my passwords :-)

12:35 AM
The "why" is the tricky part unless you do know exactly whom it is.

I must admit, letting someone reset more than once or twice an hour opens it up to abuse.

I targeted myself

If it's just some random dude I would expect a spammer to try to change the links in my answers or something.

Other than email spam I don't see how it can be abused
Unless someone's using a small email provider and someone's got some feasible MITM setup
But really unlikely

12:36 AM
More so when if I knew, I can't tell you who it was, since what I'd use to find it is PII.

Yes, not asking whom it is anyway, you can keep that secret.
If it's an actual high reputation user then there's no recent reason to do it afaik, seems more like that user would go out of line for some odd reason.

Let's hack JmG's acccount so we can find his address and mail him tons of booze and hope he loosens his tongue when drunk

@qasdfdsaq Resetception

(I'm a teetotaller)

12:38 AM
@TomWijsman Good, you'll be even more sensitive to the alcohol

But yeah, MITM is first what I thought of. But not possible because of SSL unless they found a hole in that.

@TomWijsman Resetception would be hacking @JourneymanGeek's account, using that to find his email address and hack his email account, then use that to find out what he likes to drink, then mail ordering some of his favourite drink, spiking it with alcohol, then mailing it to his home.

lol
I mostly drink water now.
Soda about once a month or so.

@qasdfdsaq Eh, I thought you guys wanted to know the person whom did this...

@TomWijsman Yeah but we need to get JmG drunk to find out

12:41 AM
@qasdfdsaq When you already have his account, drunkception.

I wouldn't know how to use his account though

(also, blah guys, if you guys want to bribe me, its worth working out what to try to bribe me with ;p)

Kidnap his dog!

@qasdfdsaq amusingly, I think there's an overview of mod accounts on MSE somewhere.

@qasdfdsaq That's not bribery.. More like extortion.

12:42 AM
Kidnap his dog Journeyman Geek?

Didn't I start off with blackmail?

@JourneymanGeek So, it was a mod?
j/k

@TomWijsman if it was a mod, I'd so have his ass. Also much yelling in seekrit rooms

@JourneymanGeek I remember the day I had access to Recycle Bin room. :(

12:43 AM
If it was a mod wouldn't you need even more to get a CM involved?

And then you guys decided to merge those rooms together and call it Trashbin or something like that... :)
And then it became private! :o

Is that why Recycle Bin was ranting in here about how it's called Recycle Bin not Trash?

@qasdfdsaq there's also a trash room I think

@JourneymanGeek There was also a room regarding the SU competitions, I wonder if I can still get in that one cuz I was given permission... :D

12:46 AM
;p

The only room I have permission to go in is my mom's :(

Oh, yup, found the secret SU room back. :D

Good old times. :)
Not sure if I could ever get up to the rate I used to visit SU at again.
Also the idea that more stuff has been answered than back in those days scares me.
At least I managed to keep chat.SU as a pinned tab for a very long while. <3

Did you ever eat a pine tree , many parts are edible. no food value , half kill you but you can stick it in your face and swollow it.
"A 1974 television commercial for Post Grape-Nuts cereal featured Gibbons asking viewers "Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible." While he recommended eating Grape Nuts over eating pine trees (Grape Nuts' taste "reminds me of wild hickory nuts")," en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euell_Gibbons just in case you have not seen the GrapeNuts commetial.

hmm
Considering that displayport is the name of a standard, would a port for displayport be a displayport port or just displayport ....

The cochineal (/kɒtʃɨˈniːl/ koch-i-NEEL or /ˈkɒtʃɨniːl/ KOCH-i-neel; Dactylopius coccus) is a scale insect in the suborder Sternorrhyncha, from which the natural dye carmine is derived. A primarily sessile parasite native to tropical and subtropical South America as well as Mexico and Arizona, this insect lives on cacti in the genus Opuntia, feeding on plant moisture and nutrients. These insects are found on the paddles of prickly pear cacti, then are brushed off and dried. The insect producescarminic acid that deters predation by other insects. Carminic acid, typically 17-24% of dried insects...

hm. now I'm annoyed by this
tho I'm uncertain if I should ask a question about it on here. Where in Excel you type 1, 10, 100 and then select them all and drag to autocomplete to the next cells it uses that weird Excel formula
where it becomes 1, 10, 100, 136. Instead of the expected 1, 10, 100, 1000
I remember hearing about how it works, not that I remember anymore. But I never figured out how to edit the behaviour
custom lists don't work, either
hm. maybe I'll ask it once I get home. not that I really have a need for it now, but I used to :I

@Leathe Seems interesting but yes I noticed it was using \\md\drive\* before I answered but I didn't think she could be trying to access a non-Windows NTFS share and path or volume that allows for characters in folder names that are typically illegal in NTFS. I unfortunately don't have any IIRC ext3 devices to setup to test this with though. Can you confirm you are able to access such a path with the PowerShell -LiteralPath switch from a Windows machine referencing these NTFS illegal characters? You may want to consider adding an answer if so as that may be the fix for her issue. — GambleNerd 28 mins ago

Do you need to remove that sticker before you insert the RAM?
I know, probably a dumb question, but i'm wondering about it

No
In fact, don't, it'll void your warranty.

@JourneymanGeek oh
When we installed extra RAM in my father's iMac, we first had this awful beeping and we weren't sure whether it was caused by the sticker or because it wasn't seated properly
we removed the stickers and after that it worked again

@Leathe I like my version better.

Hmm. Apparently "In May 2014, the Moon had faster broadband than most of rural Britain." from from 1,234 QI Facts To Leave You Speechless

Bob
@DavidPostill Unfortunately, throughput != latency.
And most protocols don't handle high latencies that well.

1:02 PM
What it really means is that most of rural Britain literally has shittier internet than the Moon.
:P

@bob Rural UK has both low bandwidth and high latency
and poor contention

Bob
@DavidPostill Not quite 1.3s bad though :P

Getting high-speed ADSL broadband delivered over existing copper cables is not possible in many areas, as the distance from the exchange or the street cabinet is so far that the broadband signal degrades and speeds drop. Minimum speed requirements are rising as the volume of data we use increases, so such slow connections will become more and more frustrating.

But speed is not the only limiting factor. Network delay, known as latency, can be as frustrating as it forces the user to wait for data to arrive or to be assembled into the right order to be processed. Most of our interviewees had

Bob
At least, hopefully not...
Some rural areas are stuck with satellite too, which apparently averages >500ms

One farmer even built his own 4G mast in a field as his broadband was so bad.

Bob
1:06 PM
@DavidPostill Hm... doesn't sound directly related. I mean, if you're running the cables out for the cell you might as well run it direct to your home. Of course, the mobile connection is more useful when out and about ("in a field").

A farmer has fixed his “unbearably” slow home broadband connection by building a giant wooden internet mast in a field miles from his home.

Richard Guy said that he had improved his internet speed significantly with his homemade mast, which uses a mobile data connection instead of a wired BT connection.

The mast consists of a 20ft wooden tower to which a 12V battery, two solar panels and a 4G mobile data receiver are attached.

Bob
@DavidPostill Ahhh receiver.

He connected it to his house with fibre.

@JourneymanGeek You've use Macrium right? Do you know if it or Veem can copy partition from a GPT disk to an MBR disk?

@Mokubai never done that.

SSD is on the way tomorrow so I can fix up my computer finally.
Don't really want to re-reinstall Windows...

@Mokubai I assume you're going to copy your boot drive? If so, don't forget to copy over your system reserved partition as well, or you might have technical issues later on
I messed up when I did my transfer. forgot to copy over the SRP and it caused me lots of issues when upgrading to 10.

@NateKerkhofs Aye, I'd intended to copy the 500MB reserved and the system partition, only thing left will be the data partition which I'll need to expand somehow.
Need a good cloning tool though.

@Mokubai: Most cloning tools just copy over the partitions. Both macrium and Veem will let you do the expanding in advanced mode.
Its that GPT -> MBR thing that I have no clue about

2:32 PM
As you say I expect it to just copy the partitions, and that should be fine.

It'll also let you resize
(I did that going from a 250gb disk to a 256gb disk)
And from a 320 -> 250gb disk
(I was swapping disks around ;p)

@JourneymanGeek Would you recommend one over the other? I currently have a 300GB system partition and a 240GB SSD on the way...

@Mokubai: I prefer macrium for one off backups
Veem handles my day to day backups

Fair enough, from your comment before it seemed that Macrium might be the way I wanted to go. I'll give it a shot tomorrow when the drive arrives.

Oh, there's a third option
Your drive may have mirroring software from the OEM
Samsungs do

2:36 PM
Sandisk
Might not be the best, but should suffice.

Yeah
Better than my 2 cheaper SSDs
;p

Doesn't look like Sandisk provide software so I'll grab Macrium.
You can clone from within the OS these days right?

2:54 PM
@Mokubai hmm, never tried that

@JourneymanGeek Note that the Samsung Data transfer tool needs to be installed in Windows and only copies over the partition itself, and NOT the system reserved partition.

Well. I'll give Macrium a shot when the drive gets here.
Urgh. And there's a small shed thing turning up at the same time...

It's impossible to shop Frys.
5 minutes later and everything loads with no end.
Do they do it intentionally or they really have 1M people every minute?

3:20 PM
@Boris_yo many of frys BAIT items are not available 30 seconds after the store opens :-) the ones that are arent worth worrying about :-) the ones that were get returned the next day .

@Psycogeek Returned and sold at discount again?

Are you on the web trying to aquire limited items ?

Do you think they have agenda?

@Boris_yo not sure what happens to them after that, some are bought only to be sold on e-bay etc.

Yes, I got PromoCode with Black Friday ad where items are limited to 1 customer.
I wonder if they have IP prioritization system.

3:23 PM
and the web site is just hanging up?

At first it's promo code process was hanging up, loading to no end. Website was online to surf and checkout without code.
Then 15 minutes later I get "504 Gateawy Time-Out"
I am wondering about "staging" part in all this...
Maybe they intentionally create surge for this to happen, sell a few units than customers expect really and then just hang "Sold Out"?
So since it's 504 for me does that mean their server is down for everyone or only me?

@Boris_yo on adgenda , sales, and for the most part it works, people will be leaving the stroe with 4 40" cheap ass lcd televisions , and 2 grabage computer systems. then spend the rest of the year , finnaly looking at the terrible reviews and trying to fix the problems they have :-)

Wait a minute...

How is it that this one works: http://images.frys.com/art/email/112715_fri764kye_76/fri_web.html?site=cemail112715#set1
But frys.com does not?
If server was crashed then whole domain would not work.
Are they testing people's stupidity?

@Boris_yo are you doing it , right at this very moment? if the web is anything like the store, you had to tent outside and cope with a mass rush (flood) , which dies down rather quickly after the few bait items are gone.

Now this error:

3:30 PM
@Boris_yo it is working here and very quickly (but it may also be partly ISP cached here). could be you shopped long enough to memory leak your browser, and need to reset your router or whatever?

Incredible... This stuff will cost you nervous breakdown turning you into German kid!

@Boris_yo subdomains don't necessarily have to be on the same server as the main domain
for load balancing it is often better to split them, especially if one is going to see a lot of high bandwidth use from email messages, while another has a high cpu load from dynamic content

@Boris_yo you dont have to test for Bargain hunting stupidity, even if your efforts fail the energy and fun of it all makes it fun stupid :-)
Black friday , is commerce version of controlled economic rioting , as long as the windows stay intact they are winning :-)

@Psycogeek Logitech G602 for $29.99 is not a bargain?
Hmm code does not work. No idea what's going on there.

@Boris_yo is good sale price on it indeed. but if your not having fun, then the $10 saved , is a questionable savings. if you have to fork over $20 to have it shipped too, then it better be about the fun.

3:40 PM
@Psycogeek Frys shipping is free.

3:50 PM
@Boris_yo for a while only, and your having it shipped to a US based address?

Yes.
If it's not worth it I can just sell. Folks here are crazy for it.

4:06 PM
Thanks to phone cams, someone caught a Black Fightday :-)

@Psycogeek Aliens behind counter? You can only capture them on shot with CCTVs

is that from the Men In Black Friday?

Yes. Hypothetical sequel.
5DayDeal guys seem to only sell digital courses: discounts.5daydeal.com
A lot of them here... I wonder how many would end up buying and actually completing all of them without them collecting dust on their drives.

4:37 PM
funny how they compare to best buy, when often you can purchace the same thing at frys for a lot less at frys. best buy has become a more Macys of tech, since the other large chains like compusa and curcuit city and a few smaller ones have been swollowed up.

Swallowed up by whom?

oops correctiob best buys in the online thing, best buy is the B&M store

www.microcenter.com/

What do you know of these guys?

@Boris_yo best buy swollowed up one of them? it is hard to keep up with all the megers and aquisitions, painfull though is the Wiping of it off the face of the map :-)
@Boris_yo they have stores too, compete lightly with frys. have awesome bait often, but prices can be a bit higher minus the bait. sales support staff is ok.

@NateKerkhofs You inserted it wrong the first time.
@DavidPostill The moon also pays a lot more for its broadband service. I'm pretty sure the NASA deep space network costs more than $5 a month.

4:42 PM
Ordered Intel 535 SSD for $79.99 and swill have coverage in my country.

@Leathe: Poor guy still seems confused about IIRC ext3 devices

It's unfortunate how low-paid Black Friday workers have to put up with breaking in crowd obsessed by gadgetry stomping each other to get what will feed their ego short-term while corporate greed counts their hard earned money.

@Boris_yo you forgot , (the employees) after having been drunk on turkey and alcohol the previous day :-)

@Psycogeek Who drinks alcohol on Thanksgiving?

One does not take working on black friday lightly, many people would rather forgoe festivities and forced on them holidays and make that ton of extra money in thier paycheck the next day LOL yea some of them are on commission (frys has various commissions).

4:54 PM
@Psycogeek Then let's assume in general.

@Boris_yo who drinks alcohol? heack many people are drunk before the turkey has gone in the oven , the previous day :-)
@Boris_yo still the fun, the excitement of the riot, the adrennalin of the mass hysteria

@Psycogeek This does not serve ego in a good way. Quite the opposite. It all starts when kid cries for another candy and father tells him only next week he can have it or better yet when he cleans his room.

@Boris_yo I posted this earlier, but again:

@Boris_yo not to forget the carb-Tryptophan and serotonin induction , caused by the excessive consumption :-)

Mmm trolling movie stars on Facebook.

5:08 PM
@qasdfdsaq LOL! Rather it's sad.
First it's Thanksgiving and next day it's Thanksgetting?

What's the next antivirus similar to NOD32 in terms of speed and efficiency? Kaspersky?

HA! Next year's EI Premium ceiling amount is $1337 for the employer! Source

@Boris_yo I like Kaspersky as it tends to come top or near the top in most tests

@qasdfdsaq How resource-intensive is it compared to NOD32?

@Boris_yo Dunno, never tried NOD32
It's not the worst in terms of resource intensiveness, slightly above average if you ask me
Then again I only used the enterprise workstation version not the bloated home/consumer kit

@qasdfdsaq I saw countless of licenses for it sold for $5...
Opposed to NOD32 ...
Might just as well grab license from eBay for $11 for NOD32 and forget about it.

I currently hate paypal so very much
I got 2 account: 1 that I created originally, got hacked and recovered, but my secret questions don't work anymore
And another that I created 2 years ago so I could pay for a hotspot, but because I used a prepaid credit card, it used the name of the bank as the account name, and I need to send them proof of my real name, but I can't do that because I don't have any utilities on my own name
actually, I just remembered my second secret question again

You can't have 2 personal accounts

@Boris_yo I know that, I'm trying to cancel the second one now, but because it's limited, it doesn't work
@Boris_yo Ugh... so Paypal wants a proof of address so they can remove the limited status of my account. However, I still live with my parents, and all my bills are registered to their name...

@TomWijsman That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: taytaytay, taytaytaycat

@JourneymanGeek Time to take some popcorn. :)

If they did, they don't now. I've just reset it myself. :P
Guess they'll have to send another 70 mails to get it again... :D
After which I'll reset to undo the access! :)
(Assuming there would be a way to manipulate the system with 70 mails; no idea, but only they would know)
(But community moderators might be able to see whether an actual reset or login occurred besides mine)
