Bob
12:35 AM
@allquixotic got the SSD, now to try it...

Bob
12:47 AM
> Enhanced mode is more secure because if your SSD dies you wont lose any data. With maximized mode if your SSD dies you could lose data.
Meh.
Chance of HDD dying > chance of SSD dying

different deaths ;p

Bob
@allquixotic It worked! My time machine SSD cache worked!
@JourneymanGeek Close enough.
I now have a 64 GB SSD cache and ~180 GB of free SSD data storage
might chuck a 20 GB page file on there
and I'll probably set up Intel Rapid Start next
(hibernation substitute that uses the SSD)

@Bob Hmm... I could do this... I have a 64GB OCZ Vertex.

Bob
@MichaelFrank I just went and bought a drive

0_0
msata?
hm, actually...

Bob
1:02 AM
lol
@JourneymanGeek laptop had a spare msata slot

yeah
mine does too ;p

Bob
this was actually... kinda an impulse buy. I blame @allquixotic :P (but I'll love him for it when this speeds up a bit, hopefully)

My Desktop has an mSATA slot.

@MichaelFrank: that's becoming more common - that's a nice way to put in a caching, system drive
tho msata might get replaced by m2

1:04 AM
like Sony M2?

Bob
my desktop... has two HDDs on RAID1 on the 6gbps ports -_-

M.2, formerly known as the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a specification for internally mounted computer expansion cards and associated connectors. It replaces the mSATA standard, which uses the PCI Express Mini Card physical layout. M.2's more flexible physical specification that allows different module widths and lengths, together with more advanced features, makes the M.2 more suitable for solid-state storage applications in general, especially when used in small devices like ultrabooks or tablets. Computer bus interfaces provided through the M.2 connector, together with supported logical...

Bob
the bad part is it probably won't improve startup speeds for when I actually fully restart
because I do it so rarely the startup stuff is gonna get kicked out of the cache :P

Bob
1:20 AM
...oh wow
that boot really was much faster
awesome
rapid start also enabled
now sleep => auto hibernate to SSD
this is beautiful
oh boy
the SSD gets quite hot
running at 51 degrees O_O

A: what to do with my overheating laptop?

Ali SnyderI want to tell you my experience on this subject. I had the same problem, increasing by the time. Actually, I used to clean my FAN every now and then. However, lately the TP started to shut down due to excessive heating. I replaced the FAN with a new one, from eBay. It turned out to be a fake rep...

Plunging your cpu. IN MILD ACID?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that dastardly FAN
> I replaced the FAN with a new one, from eBay. It turned out to be a fake replica and the problem worsened.
O_O
@JourneymanGeek ...that's not really a problem
the problem is this isn't any pure(-ish) acid.
it's vinegar

least it wasn't one of these

Bob
cringe
now I'm wondering if he at least used white vinegar
brown rice vinegar would do wonders for a CPU, I'm sure

and a little rice, and some seaweed. CPU SUSHI

Bob
1:31 AM
68 degrees oh fuck
the operating temp range is only 0 to 70
this thing heats up fast
it's also right next to a nice hot wifi chip
according to the samsung datasheet though it's supposed to reduce power when it gets hot
...and it looks like temps are going down
even with consistent usage (benchmark still running)

also, I now have proof that ISRT is magic :P
I need to do this on my desktop sometime...

I was thinking about the Starbucks ordering system again, and came across this: huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/30/…
> Tall Nonfat Latte, 2 Percent Foam

Bob
...

Seriously? Different liquid milk and foam?

Bob
I just sent myself an email with a link.

I find this bizarre...

Bob
1:46 AM
A minute later: "ooh, an email!"

Looks like the customer was trolling the barista
> Venti 1/2&1/2, 10 Pumps Vanilla, Extra Whip
WTF?!

@DragonLord - Grande Chai Tea Latte, 3 Pump, Skim Milk, Lite Water, No Foam, Extra Hot

Yeah, that part doesn't make any sense

light water. As opposed to heavy water

Bob
Is that code for "can I get your number?"?

1:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol

2:21 AM
@Bob No, it's code for "Just incase you didn't notice my hipster beard and tattoos..."

@MichaelFrank: or "I know I'm a dick, please don't poison me like an ex russian spy!"

Bob
2:57 AM
!!tumbleweed

3:10 AM
That looks fake...

lol
Trying to write up a question for SR.SE
silly thing is I have come across something that might work, but I cannot for the life of me remember what its called
was a webapp for bookmarks, official version didn't need a login, there was a self hosted varient
and it was all shiny and web 2.0y

xmarks?

no

This makes me mad
(HDB is the local public housing agency, they basically manage 90% of homes here. And debarking seriously? How would you like getting your vocal cords torn out cause you talk too much? :/)

That's not your address is it? o.O

Bob
nope

But yea, debarking is horrible :/

Bob
I didn't know debarking was a thing :S

5:57 AM
Yea, it's the same as Ear and Tail docking.
It's mutilation because you don't like the way your dog looks, or because it's 'fashionable' to do.

naw
just something I saw on one of the local animal charity's FB page
<--- is docked :/
(though it was way before even the original owner)
and yeah, thats barbaric in my opinion
also, anyone who suggests that to us will probably get told off by their neighbours ;p
everyone knows Ash ;p

6:13 AM
i would do it, if the same vet will cut out his kids tounge , so they dont yell and talk so much :-)

6:43 AM
Nah.
Just implant a hearing device in the parent.
Solves both the "television at extra deaf loudness and they get annoying with their kids being loud

7:32 AM

Lots of spammers today
including someone I am sure I have nuked before.

@JourneymanGeek it's turtles all the way down

Bob
I'm currently listening to classical music on my phone

trying to call support for a gov website
that hasn't worked since sometime last year
-___-
nothing quite like paying $1/min to listen to shitty quality music

Ooh, 2 notable questions this fine morning
And the review queue counter just hit 1k

Bob
@OliverSalzburg it hit yesterday
I finally did some reviews... didn't manage to bring it back under :(

It's below 1k now. Job done :P

Ow.
EPICALLY BAD idea

Why does Explorer display this folder with ID3 information instead of normal file details?

9:51 AM
0_0
I completely don't see a folder by that name

@JourneymanGeek It's the folder in the background

hmm
ahh
maybe its cause there's some files with id3 and some not?

10:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but I figured if I set it to "General items" that it should display it like any other folder
Ah, "Documents" has the desired effect
Maybe "General Items" means "do whatever you think is best"

11:09 AM
I am too easily amused (and this is the week I hit 66 666 rep)

11:39 AM
Wow... so VBox has super issues with Antivirus packages. o.O

I usually just use defender

11:55 AM
So... this VM is super slow. o.O

What is?

12:11 PM
Running Fedora 20 in a VBox and the mouse is crawling.

Yea, VMWare plays the exact same liveCD perfectly.

Shades of the DOID?

Bob
2:18 PM
@JourneymanGeek As cheap as storage is nowadays, it's just not worth it.

@Bob: thats kinda what I said
Thanks to this superuser.com/questions/804250/… TIL there are 3.5mm SPDIF jacks, in addition to co-ax ones and optical ones
(and that the haswell brixen have em)
and 0_0 hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1321335 those may be 3.5mm optical jacks

Bob
@JourneymanGeek for some reason, whenever I see spdif I think of dupont cables

Bob
you might recognise that :P

I know exactly what it is. Oh I feel old.

2:32 PM
is that for a USB cd drive?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek O_O
older nvidia cards came with those for hdmi audio
first time I ever encountered spdif by name

ahh
2
I've never actually used HDMI in one of my own systems

Bob
never fiddled with those old audio cd players before

(or at all until I started having wierd issues with DVI on the shared box)

Bob
from the dark ages of half a dozen different pc audio standards

2:33 PM
@Bob: if you can power em, you can pop in a cd, and get audio out of the audio pins
lol

hi all superusers

"Older nvidia card"? pfffffffffffffffft. First time I saw that is when I bought this:

and you didn't have front panel connectors

Bob
@JourneymanGeek meh, I had proper cd players for that

@ThatBrazilianGuy: did it have the remote?

2:34 PM
a SOUNDBLASTER MULTIMEDIA KIT

Bob
@avirk hey, finally dropped by again?

Is costed almost $500 back in the mid-nineties.

@ThatBrazilianGuy: Our 486 came with like....
30-40 software cds ;p
and compilations

@JourneymanGeek the remote control was even more expensive
INCREDIBLE 2x CD reading

@Bob lol, no way mate, I always keep an eye but have not much time atm :D

2:35 PM
;p

all those cd-rom magazines

@ThatBrazilianGuy: Creative is local ;p

I still have some old ones lying around

How's life going on all?

I've occationally bought stuff from the suprisingly dingy showroom in their HQ
I don't have an optical drive in my current system

2:36 PM
!! s/all/mars/

@ThatBrazilianGuy That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
@ThatBrazilianGuy I've occationmarsy bought stuff from the suprisingly dingy showroom in their HQ (source)

@Bob *stomp* I AM A STEGOSAURUS! :D

> How's life going on mars?

@allquixotic @JourneymanGeek @Bob how are you all, i saw you guys make a good progress in my absence. :P

Bob
2:37 PM
@allquixotic :D

Bob
did you see the speed tests? I love this card :D

@avirk You defied us and got married anyway. And then totally disappeared.
3
@Bob Yeah.

@avirk Progress is my middle name. Damn, it's even on my flag!

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy That Progress Guy?

2:39 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy: I'm sure it also says "New World Order" in green on green

!! s/Progress/Sed Failure/

@allquixotic eww Sed Failure (source)

god DAMNIT

Bob
XD

2:40 PM
@allquixotic ah yes my life got very busy after marriage, but not with my wife :D

Dude. Doing it wrong then! ;p

@avirk TMI

Bob
@avirk a bit of TMI there :P

@allquixotic I am sure is there a german word for "trying to make fun of someone but having it backfire".

@ThatBrazilianGuy well that's good, it should be a always there :)

2:40 PM
SCHADENAPFELSTRÜDEL

@ThatBrazilianGuy: and its probably a VERY long word.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Funenmakenbackenfiren

@ThatBrazilianGuy: I'm sure I had something like that for breakfast once.

@allquixotic and @Bobs you both trying to troll me:D

@JourneymanGeek Did it backfire and try to bite you?

2:41 PM
by the way guys I'm here to seeking help of your's

@ThatBrazilianGuy: No, wasn't in soviet russia at the time.

Bob
@avirk Oh you're just like @WilliamHilsum! :P

@Bob I was just about to say the same lol

@Bob lol, he is more intelligent than me :d
by the way i was trying to edit the Insyde Bios to change the splash screen of it.

2:43 PM
But there is no success yet for me

Bob
@avirk Oh god, I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole.

@avirk: state supplied laptop?

Bob
I was looking at potential BIOS modding to enable advanced options on my laptop. The guides were scary...

Big picture of politician as a splash screen?

@Bob good idea, but there are ways. :)

2:44 PM
@Bob: If I don't have advanced options, I am not bloody buying it ;p

Bob
Thankfully, whoever did the original BIOS design didn't completely fuck it up, and had Intel RST enabled and the Intel Rapid Start option came up once the SSD was added
@JourneymanGeek So... >90% of all laptops?

@JourneymanGeek yeah buddy,l Tamil can be changed but UP government paid the Hp for making signature check at stratup with bios

Bob
Most won't let you overclock, etc. :P

@Bob: Pretty much
I am so screwed with my next laptop tho

@JourneymanGeek yes and here are two, father and son :D

2:45 PM
Lenovo switched to chicklet keys and I hate those

@Bob intel is lot easy than insyde man
Insyde is totally fuc**** hard to mod

Bob
@avirk The BIOS (UEFI, really) is an insydeh20
Intel just makes the option ROM for RST.

and I don't know what the hell is RSA they put on it
@Bob yes that is the bios I have

@avirk Uttar Pradesh laptop? probably very locked down

@avirk: It'll happen

Bob
2:48 PM
I just wish RST could report some more detailed stats on the caching
I want to know what exactly it's doing :P

We have hardly any questions on UP laptops, but the thinkpads they gave in TN... so many questions on bios modding and installing windows ;p

@allquixotic yeah, you searched for that right now? Well I read on one forum that someone able to remove the splash screen but he is not able to change it, he just got the blank screen at the splash screen

@avirk: thats not bad, no?

@JourneymanGeek only my question about that on SU

2:49 PM
and Tamil laptops has a solution

yeah, cause more mindshare

@Bob I wonder if my Nehalem laptop has any sort of IRST functionality... because right now I have Windows doing pagefile and ReadyBoost, no IRST.

Bob
@allquixotic You were using eSATA, right?

@JourneymanGeek I think only I'm the geek in UP state :D

@Bob ya
@avirk the rest of your comrades who are geeks moved here to the US! :P
I'm surrounded by them

Bob
2:50 PM
@allquixotic It probably has RST (RAID), but I'm not sure about SRT (caching)

and ugh, not entirely correct harrymc answer, and he got the bounty :/

Bob
Maybe try FancyCache?

@JourneymanGeek typical

@allquixotic lol, tell them to help me from there:D

worst part about bounties is the most upvoted answer gets bounty, even if it's rubbish

2:51 PM
Yeah
well, no

@avirk they won't, they don't care about UP laptops now that they are here :P

they get half
;p

@JourneymanGeek it would be the waste, so I gave him. If you find the way I'll pay another bounty for this

@avirk He kinda games the system so, not really a waste.

2:52 PM
@allquixotic yeah that is, but mine would be waste as Harry had not 2 upvote till then
@JourneymanGeek we can say that too
well I want to try to find out all the possible way to hack it down
and then I'll write down a blog for it

ultimate solution: keep all parts but replace the motherboard
unseat the CPU, RAM, fan, re-use

I just turn to this topic yesterday again after 1 year

wipe the disk clean

close your eyes during the bootscreen
;p

2:54 PM
lol

Bob
@allquixotic Also, Rapid Start is awesome. Windows won't let you put the hibernation file on any other drive, but this sidesteps it nicely.

@allquixotic good option if you have enough money to get new one

shouldn't it be illegal to display politicians' picture at boot? that seems like something totalitarians would use as propaganda

Bob
@allquixotic or pop the BIOS flash and replace it with a generic one for that laptop model? :P

granted, I get emails from "Barack Obama" (not really him I'm sure, just a campaign advisor) and delete them ;D

Bob
2:55 PM
assuming they didn't get completely custom laptops manufactured

@allquixotic: its kinda vote buying.

@allquixotic I heard once that court said to remove that logo from the laptop but I don't think there is any official statement yet.

@JourneymanGeek that's the part I don't like about it :P

the TN one gave away TVs, Blenders then PCs

blenders?

2:56 PM
well grinders

Bob
...blenders?

o_O

Bob
...grinders?

they're like blenders, but more hardcore.

Bob
what am I missing here?

2:56 PM
I guess people need blenders/grinders to grind up all that cumin
since India consumes 75% of the cumin it makes

@Bob okay can you guys find the bios image for this model from another country? HP Pavilion G4 1303AU

Bob
did some numbskull go "well, everyone wants a blender!"?

I assume they mean these
A wet grinder can refer to either a tool for abrasive cutting of hard materials, or a food preparation appliance used especially in Indian cuisine for grinding food grains to produce a paste or batter. A wet grinder for abrasive cutting uses fluid for lubrication or cooling, whereas one for food preparation uses water to combine with ground grain to produce batter. == Abrasive cutting wet grinders == Some angle grinders, most tile saws, and some grinders for sharpening blades used in woodworking are wet grinders. The fluid helps with lubrication of the cutting process and with cooling to avoid...
@Bob: er... calling this a blender...

oh crud, what was the two-letter code for Tamil -_-

@Bob the shitty ideas of parties to gain votes and they were succeeded in this, however I didn't vote them, but don't enclose it to anyone :D

2:57 PM
Apparently artisan chocolate manufacturers love em.
;p

Bob
just be warned that it might brick the thing :\

@Bob the latest bios firmware I got from hp for this model in my country is 8 months old :P

2:59 PM
translate: todavia funciona?
awwwwwwww they killed it! :'(

@Bob if sytem model is same then I don't think they can :D

Bob
huh, have you seen this?
