Restore zoom level in Sublime Text 2 not possible?

Bob
Huh, so it is kill %%

@CBenni please, for the love of god and all that is holy, if you are running a Linux-based OS, please do not call it "unix" or "UNIX"; call it Linux or GNU/Linux

Bob
@allquixotic Nope.

personal pet peeve of mine, please pardon my diction ;p

Bob
^Z suspends, bg runs a suspended job in the background

2:00 PM
ok sorry :P, its debian linux then

@Bob o rite

Bob
@allquixotic I tend to just say *nix or POSIX-based to catch BSD and other unices as well (when it's not actually Linux-specific)
Hm, perhaps POSIX-compliant is more correct.
Meh.

@Bob these days, there's so much stuff that is Linux-specific that I hesitate to even be confident enough to mention POSIX or *nix, because chances are, unless I really know what I'm talking about, some smart guy is going to say "that thing doesn't exist on NetBSD!" or such
anyway, if I'm using a Linux-based distro, I will say Linux or GNU/Linux, but never "unix"

jobs now gives me [1]+ Terminated ./myscript

@CBenni that's the expected behavior

2:02 PM
is it dead now? :D

Bob
@allquixotic I can reasonably expect cat et al. to work on any POSIX-compliant system.

that means your background proc is dead

ok great
Now, what I was attempting. I am trying to write a script that restarts that process in a tmux window

Bob
Good lord. How much time did this guy put into his answer only to have the question closed? stackoverflow.com/a/23208014/1030702

also, I love that paperclip thing xD For some reason, it wont work and im trying to figure that out

2:04 PM
@Bob ha! that guy reminds me of... me!
also, "too broad" is somewhat annoying, as it's the new favorite cop-out close vote reason (replacing "not constructive" in that role) when people don't want to answer a question :P
I think VTC primarily opinion-based is a good, solid close reason, but too broad is still a bit annoying

I always delete all my system files...

@CBenni did the mount -o remount,rw,exec / fix your ability to run scripts in /var?

Bob
@allquixotic TRWTF is the Symantec KB doc telling people to manually delete files from system directories.

nope, it didnt
I just chmod-ed it

!!tell 15090426 wiki Windows_Resource_Protection

Windows Resource Protection is a feature in Windows Vista that replaces Windows File Protection. It protects registry keys and folders in addition to critical system files. The way it protects resources differs entirely from the method used by Windows File Protection. Overview Windows File Protection works by registering for notification of file changes in Winlogon. If any changes are detected to a protected system file, the modified file is restored from a cached copy located in a compressed folder at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache. Windows Resource Protection works by setting discretionary...

Bob
@ChatBotJohnCavil It's not perfect.
> restored from a cached copy located in a compressed folder at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache
Guess which folder they were messing in?
Also, there's a lot of third-party drivers that live in the same locations that would be nicely destroyed.

@Bob heh. the next evolution for WRP is to write the latest officially signed MSFT binaries of core system files into a DRM'ed container/partition somewhere on disk that the user can't access it, even with admin privs
I wonder if WRP protects third party drivers like Catalyst. hmm

yea just like system restore restoring a virus previously removed , taking more control away from the user , is always good for the virus makers who seem to find every way to get deep in it.

Is it possible to control display power individually in Windows?
What I mean by that is, if you have two or more monitors, can you tell Windows to power down the ones that are not being used?
Or set the timeout for when to turn them off, and set this individually?
Monitor 1: turn off display after 5 minutes
Monitor 2: turn off display after 2 minutes
Like so?
I imagine being able to automatically turn off monitors that are not in active use. So that only the monitor you're working on i.e. where the mouse pointer is being used, stays on.
That could be Monitor 1 above, and since you're using it, it won't go off after 5 minutes. Whilst at the same time, the second monitor will go off after 2 minutes. Unless you move your mouse cursor over to it.
Chances are that I'm just dreaming... none of this is possible with Windows.
So please, snap me out of the dream, say it ain't possible! :)

@sammyg didn't you already post this?

Apparently these are all just global settings.
You can't set power options individually. You can't set screen saver options individually. You can't even set backgrounds individually.
Not without a third party software anyway. And even then, you can only mess around with backgrounds and screensavers. You can't control power.
@Malachi If you're referring to the answer I posted, I tried the MurGeeMon and it works for screen savers, and backgrounds, but not for power.
It has that option "disable at application exit". That's probably the only way you can make that secondary monitor go off.
I haven't figured out how it works just yet. I assume it means that when you exit out or close an application that was sitting on your secondary monitor, that secondary monitor will go off?...

Q: Put one monitor of a dual monitor windows system into standby

PsycogeekStandby not Disabled! When running 2 monitors on windows 7 or Windows XP, I would like to be able to put one of the monitors at a time into standby. The method can be manual. When running 2 monitors , the second monitor is not always needed, shutting off the monitors own power switch will turn o...

I imagine that you would have to code something at a lower level in order to turn the screen off. but why not just turn both off if there is no activity? that is what I don't understand
is it because he is still reading?

If you can't even do that, then there's not much use to MurGeeMon. At least in terms of controlling power to that monitor. It's no better than Win+P essentially.
@Malachi Yes, that is correct. He wants to be able to still use the primary monitor.

so it's happening while reading, but wants only one monitor to sleep not both.

I can totally understand and relate to that. Why have two, three, or even four monitors on all the time, even when you are not using them all and they just sit there and draw power. You can of course power them off completely by pressing the power button on each. But that's not for the lazy ones, and you have to remember to do it.

I am going to look into finding the windows code for sending signals to the monitors but I don't think I will know enough to code it or not

3:12 PM
I only partially workedaround my problem with a Toggle batch that closes the windows that were over there, then shuts off the display. A second press un-disables the display and re-opens the windows. it works so good i have used it 3 times total :-(
The biggest problem for me was when using the methods provided for turning that off with software, the windows from over there would come flying into the mess of windows on the other one. I Completely understand why they do that, because there were times before when changing resolutions and all, that a window could be impossilbe to grab and move back into a viewspace. I even had to hack the registry and config files a few times when windows would be stuck off the screen.
So the way it is set-up is totally window safe. They just needed to concider more features for 2 monitor setups, in the implementation of them.

@Psycogeek you mean 2+ monitor set ups
I am using 3 monitors right now

sure that too. 3 is better than 2 anyways. I tried out some of the multi junk and having a big HOLE in the middle of the view was not ever going to work for me, i dont care how fun or cool the game or video would be stretch across em.
I figure with 3 you have a main view and the peripheral vision.

@Psycogeek This Toggle batch... something you wrote?

Yes

3:29 PM
@Psycogeek So when you would close program windows on the secondary monitor, the monitor would be disabled?
And the primary monitor stays on?
That sound like the "disable at application exit" option in MurGeeMon.

Yes close the programs, devcon (disable device) the monitor away. For My specific programs i have there.

@Psycogeek I think that you could create a windows service that would do this. or maybe Executables that you could call based on events like (no activity and Mouse Events)

Ideally, I would like to be able to set standby timeouts for each monitor individually. Unless you move the mouse cursor over to that monitor, it will go off (standby) in given amount of time.
As I understand, Linux can do this already?

Correction, i am using 'c:\windows\system32\displayswitch.exe /extend" for that one.
and the other one is called like this displayswitch.exe /internal

Then that's the only ready made solution. Use Linux! Unless someone feels tempted to code something for Windows, or Microsoft catches up on the idea. It would be very much welcome if they were to implement this by the time they release Windows 9. ^,^

3:38 PM
@sammyg I would like to know what linux does. Sometimes people say things do things, and instead the blank screen, or seperate screensavers.

@sammyg well, a bit in MSFT's defense, they did provide a much enhanced experience for multi-monitor on Windows 8/8.1, by adding a separate task bar option for each monitor
3

If linux can sperately standby the monitors, then i do not have to hear that it is some hardware limitation that has to be fixed via the GPU software manufacture.

xrandr could do it I'm sure

so the requirements are that you can still do other things on the one screen without waking the sleeping screen, but once something on that screen is bothered it should awake.
@Psycogeek there isn't a limitation, other than it hasn't been coded yet, for windows.
I am going to see if I can't make it happen. we will see how long it takes me to figure out how to make all the requirements happen correctly
but I have to get back to work

pah, who needs to actually work? isn't SU just an outlet for bored employees to do something productive for a change? :P
that's certainly where I spend most of my time on SU...

3:51 PM
@Malachi it would be very special to have it standby and wake-up based on mouse location and time. If someone can actually code such a thing.

@allquixotic That is very nice of them! It only took them a decade or two... :p
And with the introduction of Windows 7 it was possible to rearrange program buttons on the taskbar, without using third party software.
I remember using "task arrange" on Windows XP for this very reason.
This is one of the early versions, on Windows 2000 or 9x... ish...

Morning all

What does this "arrange icons" button do? Is that like arranging buttons on taskbar?

In 3.1, Windows used the Program Manager, and didn't have a taskbar
Kill Explorer, and make sure the taskbar doesn't come back. That's the closest you'll see

@Psycogeek I think that it is possible. and I am going to see if I can code it. I will either have it beta tested by users here, or post the code on CodeReview for review

3:59 PM
@CanadianLuke No, I'm not actually using 3.1 here. Just wondering what that arrange button does (or did, back in the day)? Is that for changing the order in the list?

No, it would line up the icons of windows that were minimized. You know the desktop of Windows 9x? Imagine that's all you had on the desktop, no taskbar, no clock, no start button... All your programs ran in their windows, then would minimize to their icon form when you hit the down arrow

@CanadianLuke Thanks for explanation!

That’s the visual elevator pitch for Stack Exchange. We were the little dot in the middle, a potent mix of useful traits from other tools, a wiry mutt full of hybrid vigor. The purpose of this blend was to allow and encourage the construction of a library of solutions, by providing communities with the tools they needed to share their experiences and challenges with others who might struggle with the same issues.

The diagram illustrated where we stole drew inspiration for the design of those tools, and their influence occasionally shows up in the results. Sometimes, …

Wiki, this week i was wiking around and noticed some of the wiki data is 8years out of date, plus since they started putting in more links at the bottom , there are way more dead ones.
All that work and arguing about what to put in for ages. Luckily they can just rename the top "history of" and update at the bottom :-)

4:15 PM
No problem @sammyg. I recommend running all versions of Windows a few times, just through a VM, to get used to how things worked and how it progressed. I started at Windows 3.0 though, so I cheated by not trying 1.x and 2.x :)

@CanadianLuke even Microsoft's most die-hard fans, customers and employees wouldn't lie to you and claim that Windows 1 or 2 were any good. they weren't.
3.1 started to introduce some neat ideas; Windows 95 was a revolution on the front-end but a disaster on the backend (kernel); Windows NT was a revolution on the backend but had plenty of frontend problems; and Windows XP finally brought together the great frontend of 95, with enhancements, plus the modern Win32 API and the NT kernel architecture
as far as being apprised of how things progressed, you needn't look any earlier than the last release of Windows 3.x. then look at 95, then look at ME, then look at XP, then Vista, then 7, then 8, then 8.1

@allquixotic I disagree. There are noticable differences between 95 and 98, and 98SE; between ME and 2000; and even some workgroup changes between 3.0, 3.1 and 3.11

then 8.1.1
lol

Like I said, to show how they progressed, I feel that's important

When did Windows turn to 32-bit?

4:22 PM
You could get a 32 bit extension for 3.x, if you had a 32-bit processor and motherboard; full 32-bit was expected by 95 though

So Windows 95 was first 32-bit Windows?
Are Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x all public domain now?
:)
The problem with Microsoft is that they are slow at implementing new ideas/concepts. It usually takes them several years.
That's only one of their problems...

@Blogbot Call me when it's posted on blog.stackexchange.com!!!

Hello @OliverSalzburg
:)
Is Chromecast serving you well?
I tested Videostream for Chromecast the other day. It works great, even with AVI and MKV files. The companion remote app taps nicely in and allows you to pause, play, change volume and seek.
It basically makes the Chromecast work like a simple media player for your local files.
It expands the functionality. Usually people think of Chromecast as this gadget for playing web content.
The stream was very good also, I tested with 720p mkv files (in lack of higher res). There was no skipping, or chopping of video and audio. Buffering was fast too.
YMMV

4:42 PM
@sammyg Yeah, it is

4:56 PM
@OliverSalzburg Glad to hear that! :) I just thought I would let you know that Videostream works quite good with this thingy. All you need is the Videostream app on your computer and Google Chrome browser. And you get a local media streamer.
Not sure you would be interested in this, but anyway...

5:12 PM
@sammyg I'll check it out!

5:42 PM
What UCloud does? Encrypts Wi-Fi or adds additional SSL layer?

So I reinstalled Win8.1 on my hard disk and ran chkdsk. It's been stuck on ""Scanning and repairing drive (C:): 10% complete" for the past 2 hours.
Is that normal?
The hard disk light and the wifi light is on, however.

@DemCodeLines is this the same broken disk?

Yeah.

I don't know how to better get it through your head. The. Disk. Is. Broken. Stop using it. Use something else instead until your new disk comes. The fact that the chkdsk is hung at 10% should be even further indication of that fact, in case the other 100 mentions of "it's BROKEN" from me and Bob weren't enough.

It's in my head already.
I don't have any other option right now
and no, I am not going to install Win 8 on some flash drive.
Nor will I use an ubuntu live cd, because i need to do frequent editing and saving

5:55 PM
Well, you're just going to be sitting there watching it try to futilely check your disk until your new one arrives :) Have fun with that!!

should I force shutdown it then?

Seriously though, it was toast yesterday, and doing all that I/O to install Windows over again (it's a miracle it even installed) is not going to help.
Sure, force shut it down. What difference will it make? None. It's already broken, and the OS install is probably hosed. Corruption on top of corruption... no harm done.
0+0=0, and broken+broken=broken.
Anyway, chkdsk doesn't do surface scans by default anymore, and even when it does do a surface scan, it doesn't get "stuck" on one percentage point for 2 hours, so you can be pretty sure that it isn't going to magically unhitch and keep going.
The thing to understand about broken disks is, "standard" troubleshooting techniques that can be helpful with systems that have working hardware, are not applicable. You can try to apply them, but it's like trying to put gas in your car's tank to repair a flat tire.
And before you ask, physically repairing a HDD would cost way more than buying a new one. It requires special tools and skills, which I sure as heck don't have, and if you had them, you'd have used them already.
I get it. It sucks to be in a situation where you're going to have to wait a while to get replacement hardware and don't have anything to fall back on. I have sympathy. It's happened to me, and it will almost definitely happen to me (and you) again. But you're wasting your time trying to beat that dead disk to death.

Let go
Keep Calm and Remember to Back up Frequently in the Future

@Malachi This discussion has been going on for days, since before you started showing up with the election starting. I think his backup situation is more or less taken care of. He's already reinstalled his OS trying to get up and running again on this dead disk, though. His problem isn't backups; it's hoping to be able to get some more use out of a disk that reports SMART failure in the short test.

haha might as well keep riding it until the new disk comes in rather than do nothing.

6:07 PM
@DemCodeLines Do you literally have nothing else to do? You did mention you have other computers. That would be a much less frustrating, much more productive use of your time, would it not?

@DemCodeLines why didn't you go to the nearest Best Buy and Buy a new Drive. it would be there already

Even if you have to fall back on a very old and slow system, as long as it's stable, you'll be much better off in the interim.

yeah, it would. Oh well...

I'd rather have a single-core Pentium 4 with 1 GB of RAM that works, than a high-end laptop whose main/only disk is totally hosed and keep trying to use it.
You can do so much with just a web browser these days...

can't code ;)

6:09 PM

Right, but these kind of utilities are only good for occasional use, not for actual serious development.

Oh really? I guess all those people using it for their full-time work are not "actual serious" developers... drat.

Maybe I should get an SSD with a small size and then an external hard disk and save all the serious stuff on that hard disk

@DemCodeLines portable hard disks cable connectors are horrible.

@DemCodeLines just make sure, when you are shopping for SSDs, that you read reviews
2

6:13 PM
they don't last long for stuff like that. for back up every now and again they are good

I am not an indie developer. I highly doubt companies would move their entire development on the cloud.

there are plenty of super reliable SSD series which will last years and years under normal use, but a couple of bad apples have soured the pot a bit
I've heard reports of SSDs failing in 3 months to a year, but it's not all SSDs, just some production lines of certain SSD models
it's like HDDs, in that way: most of them are good to great, but there are some that are horrid
@Malachi funny you mention that! there's a Best Buy about 1/8th mile from where I work :P I use that place occasionally for "gotta have it now" tech, when I can afford to either pay more or have a drop in quality, in exchange for having it right now
although there are also some items where the quality is less likely to be bad, like ethernet cables, and I'm comfortable that if I buy them there, they'll continue to work to spec
their flash drive and HDD selection isn't bad, either
the 10 minute shipping beats even Amazon, though :P
until Amazon starts sending drones to your house

@allquixotic oops, sorry, my bad

fun addicts feed on enablers like that to justify their fun habits
the goal is to prevent any and all potential origins of fun, to suffocate every last bit of fun out of them, so that they're exactly as stodgy and humorless as me, or soullesshack slhck

Q: Is it possible to competely repair outlook folders?

JeremyWestonThe folders in my inbox in Outlook Express 6 have suddenly gone blank. I tried to reinstall OE 6 but, nothing changed.

Well sure, I'm pretty certain there's an app for that. A spammy one.

@slhck lol... do you mean to imply that this poor, innocent user is baiting out spam?

@allquixotic How could he — he even has a real name!

I think "completely repair" is their secret keyword for their software/malware
or "completely recover"

7:50 PM
Almost like poetry.

are they using some kind of anonymizing proxy for this stuff? if not, why isn't their entire /24 banned?

Yeah, sorta. Some spammers are stupid and are banned quite efficiently. Others seem to use proxies.

too bad banning their entire /8 would cover way too many innocents :P

Haha, yeah. Actually you'd also hit quite a few innocents if you just outright ban a single IP.
Not in all cases, but still.

well it'd be worse if you happen to ban a CGN
or a public library or university
other than that, most single IPs will not ban more than a handful of people

!!no

people need to quit assuming that SU is xda-developers or so

Admittedly, the format is quite unique.
I'd probably behave completely stupid if I ever had to use a normal forum.
Oh, another nominee!

@slhck well, I had my chance :P
for the first... 24 hours or so of the nomination I was looking like a possible #2 pick

8:05 PM
@allquixotic As if!

allllll the oldies coming out of the woodwork to run for mod, even ones that have been very inactive :)
we should hold elections monthly just to get all the old folks to come back
Hilsum etc

Ah, well I think most of the "oldies" who are now inactive weren't here for becoming moderators.
Mostly enjoyed answering, getting rep, and at some point it just stopped being exciting I guess.

well most of them have been on the site a lot longer than I have, and your election to moderator happened the same month that I started contributing to SU

Wow, time flies..

Mokubai has the rep and flags; nevermind the fact that he had zero activity on the site for weeks at a time, he'll probably make it in... not sure how I feel about that one given the inconsistent participation... but I'm glad to at least see JMG make it... I can't envision a universe in which JMG isn't voted in

8:12 PM
@allquixotic I was actually going to ask him about how much time he thinks he can invest.
@allquixotic Well, he's been around for as long as I can remember. I think that just incredibly helps. Being present.

not saying it doesn't help... he reviews a lot of stuff even when he isn't here a lot...

Heh

question is, would getting a diamond next to his name make him come roaring back to participate every day? I'd think SU doesn't need any more mods who only participate occasionally; the mods you'd want to recruit will be ones that can invest a lot of time
you could have 50 mods that only drop in once a week or so, and they'd be less effective than a tiny handful of clued-in mods who spend hours on the site on a consistent, daily basis
but... *shrug*... I'm just saying, we can talk about the merits of people, and that's all well and good for the rational thinking human being, but 95% of the people who cast the votes are going to vote based on site rep... I don't claim that Mokubai would be a bad moderator, but the recent evidence doesn't really support it, that's all.

@allquixotic Absolutely. I used to be able to check in every 30 minutes or so and clear flags. And sometimes even browse the site for hours. It's just not possible anymore, and I think getting new blood would help, with a little guidance from the old folks, so to say.

I was in line at my local polling place for US President and heard an older lady remark that she was voting for Mitt Romney because she likes his hair

8:18 PM
@allquixotic Well, he does consistently flag stuff.
@allquixotic Oh dear :D
Anyway I'm super tired, gonna go to bed!

that might be a good idea if you're super tired. super sleep
don't make me teach the bot the !!sleep command again

I don't remember that story?
Anyway, good night!

heh, one night Bob was up until like 6 AM his local time, and HackToHell taught the bot "sleep", and used it on Bob every time he talked

@allquixotic Is that anything like sleep()?

@OliverSalzburg nah, it just tells our local grumpy fox to go to sleep
I believe HTH's original quote was @Bob, go to sleep.
it got a few stars, but that was back when the bot was a novelty
now it's just a shorthand for pasting in image macros

8:30 PM
Damn. I'm out of the loop :D

@OliverSalzburg does that mean you're going to exit(0); now? :( you need a mainloop to keep running... heartbeat, etc
*traps Oli's exit() call and injects a new mainloop function*

@allquixotic No, I just mean I was probably taking a break from chat when it happened

oh ok; I'm not used to people who switch between chat and the mainsite; it's better to continue using both from gettimeofday() to gettimeofday() imo
I'm having second thoughts about my write()-in nomination; I may just return to being a chat troll and talking to my cgroup about /dev/snd/* instead of sleep()ing until this election process receives a SIGKILL

Enough! :D

meh. /usr/sbin/work just reniced itself to -20 so I'll goto chat after my load factor drops down below 1 (single-core CPU sucks)

I should get some points for this one, I used hand drawn circles in my answer

A: Is there anyway to stop Windows 8 from restarting for an update?

Malachiif you are afraid of losing all your tabs in Chrome, there is a setting where all of your tabs in the last Chrome window open are saved, so that you can resume them when the computer is restarted or you open Chrome again. settings -> on Startup (section) Click Settings then find the "On start...

@Malachi That's... not answering the question at all.

@MichaelFrank well no and kind of.
the user complained about losing all the tabs in their Chrome Browser

No, and not at all. Take away the after the fact complaint about losing Chrome tabs and your answer is completely irrelevant.

What you could do is edit the answer already there that is about Chrome and update it with your extra info.

@MichaelFrank it's completely different
I would be changing another users answer completely.

I dunno... I feel like there's already an answer about Chrome, and I'm a fan of answers with more than one solution. Perhaps I'm wrong?

10:20 PM
@MichaelFrank @MichaelFrank Questions with more than one solution are cool, but I find it far cooler when people answer simple questions in an unconventional way that no one had thought of.

@joejoe31b That's true. My highest voted answer on Gaming.SE is "Try clicking the other mouse button."
uuuuuuuuuugh it's only 10:30am :( Why is today crawling by?

Well, the job action isn't as bad as originally rumoured... I just gotta do supervision

@CanadianLuke Is it supervising children or adult behaving like children? ;)

Children :P I also get 15.3 km per way, each day... At 52 cents per km
And it's right by my mom's place, so free lunch! Lol
@joejoe31b Yea, that one wasn't too funny :(

@CanadianLuke Sorry you had to see that :(

Curse my mod-like powers ;)

@CanadianLuke hmm whats this look like blog.igorware.com are these blogs breeding now?

11:00 PM
It's a built in theme from Wordpress. I asked someone to make me a theme, but she hasn't got any designs for me to sign off on yet... Know anyone who wants to make a theme for me?

@joejoe31b Honestly, with the way some adult acts, I wouldn't be suprised if you were right.

@MichaelFrank Reading that article was 30 seconds that I will never get back......

Well, it's most definitely a slow news day here.

@MichaelFrank Really? I couldn't tell ;)
