@allquixotic: I've noticed you've withdrawn from the election and have changed your gravatar to the default. Is there something wrong?
Did something happen?
4 hours ago, by allquixotic
I'm having second thoughts about my write()-in nomination; I may just return to being a chat troll and talking to my cgroup about /dev/snd/* instead of sleep()ing until this election process receives a SIGKILL

@DragonLord Maybe he realised Evan was just too strong.

@allquixotic just vanished.

@DragonLord Yea, he went offline a couple hours ago, didn't notice the gravatar change though.

@MichaelFrank That is bizarre...
Here's the all-important clue:
4 hours ago, by allquixotic
meh. /usr/sbin/work just reniced itself to -20 so I'll goto chat after my load factor drops down below 1 (single-core CPU sucks)
The answer: @allquixotic is too busy with work to take a moderator position.

@DragonLord I think people concidering it for any time should "get out there" cause next year. So i sorta would have liked to see him hang out there still even if i choose not to have chosen him.

12:22 AM
That would make more sense to me if I knew what renice meant.

@MichaelFrank It changes the priority of a running process in *nix OSes.

@MichaelFrank renice is a command in Unix and Linux which sets the priority of a process. Lower numbers indicate higher priority.
The default is 0; under Linux, nice values may range from -20 to 19.

@terdon Thanks.
@DragonLord Ahh, I was wondering how -20 was linked with 'too busy'.

Yeah, it's wonderfully intuitive that one.

@terdon The only explanation I could find is that increasing the value for a process makes it nicer, and thus allows other processes to go before it.

12:30 AM
@MichaelFrank You hit it right on the nail.
nice is a program found on Unix and Unix-like operating systems such as Linux. It directly maps to a kernel call of the same name. nice is used to invoke a utility or shell script with a particular priority, thus giving the process more or less CPU time than other processes. A niceness of −20 is the highest priority and 19 or 20 is the lowest priority. The default niceness for processes is inherited from its parent process, usually 0. Use and effect nice becomes useful when several processes are demanding more resources than the CPU can provide. In this state, a higher priority pro...

Nice. No pun intended.

I think allquixotic would never fall under the "Evan Carroll" joke candidate status, and instead would be under the "next in line in next election" status.

12:44 AM
Maybe it was the "stress of the election" next time we should assign campaign managers to each of the nominees.
Get some security for the high level candidates, extra web protection.
Also all that Jet lag from flying across the world to participate in all the events

1:01 AM
If we could convert this rep into bitcoin, then it could be used to fund the campaigns.
Then just to make it totally screwed up, we need to seperate the people into parties that will be represented as having 100% different ideas, even if the candidates will be 98% the same after elected.

1:23 AM
vertcoin.org/index.html <-- wonder what happens when there are as many computer money things as there are blogs and websites? I think i should start mining GoogleCoin EbayCoin & AmazCoin right now. FaceCoin, and TwitCoin?

@MichaelFrank they do not make heros like that anymore. In my country the guy would be fired the next day.

1:38 AM
@Psycogeek One of the guys in the office here mentioned that this is pretty standard for dealing with a gas bottle that's on fire.

a CO2 or halon extinguisher should put it out. fuel without oxygen does not a fire make.

I think the idea is that you keep the bottle cold, and just let the venting gas burn itself out.

What if the regulator blew out?

@Psycogeek The pressure is only going to go down if the temperature doesn't increase.

@MichaelFrank dribbling on it with the hose would not have given me the confidence to believe that was happening.

1:46 AM
@Psycogeek Agreed, but the basic concept remains.

I would be running back to the truck to (yea thats the ticket ;-) get the CO2 extinguisher

@Psycogeek ouch

As a kid i was trying to get a lighter to work, by using a small butane tank to recharge it. Not understanding that they do not work when just charged because the fuel is cold. We were standing in an area that was sheltered by a group of trees. much of the small butane tank had escaped into the air, when the lighter finnaly worked . . . duhhh about 10foot ball of fire went off, mostly scaring , and singeing a bit of eyebrow and hair.

hello

@Sathya hey
google chromium browser gets a web page from server parallel mode?
and other web browsers?

@xiaodongjie I'm not sure I understand. How do you mean "server parallel mode"?

oh, no. ex: web page has some images.
I think that client can get this images from server as parallel mode.

6:02 AM
yes that's true far as I know

@Sathya where I can find it?
I installed chromium-browser source.

@xiaodongjie I 've no clue, tbh.

@Sathya oh, thanks. np.

As far as I know it, is true that almost all the browsers can be pulling in multiple parts of a web page, like the pictures, with multiple connections made to the same servers. There are even tweaks for limitations on how many connections_Per_server in the windows system. Most every downloader will use multiple connections also even including multiple connections for the same file item (on big files).
Weird side notes: there were times when some of the tweaks for overdoing the number of connection to like 100 :-) would actually make loading way slower , as they all thrashed into eachother.

Q: How to find motherboard specs

doctor-lgI want to upgrade my sony vaio vpc-ej3s1r - install ssd instead of dvd drive. But I cannot find any information on its SATA interface speed so I cannot choose ssd model. Where I can find this specifications?

^ would it matter? The sata interface speed.
So far from what i have seen with sata it is all backwards compatable, and the faster stuff is still faster in the backwards compatable?

@MichaelFrank That's hardcore

Yeah it would you want 6gbps for a good ssd. There is also 3 Gbps interfaces a ssd would quite handily saturate

@JourneymanGeek ok so a ssd could max that out, lets see if i can do the math 3Gb little b would be 375MB , close enough to get a 500MB speed one still?

I just completed a Windows Server SBS migration. What a ride!

Software Recomendations took so long to get out of beta , I forgot the software i needed. It must have been real important :-) I should concentrate on forgetting a lot more things. (that probably are just about as important)

... Sr is out of beta?

@JourneymanGeek Private beta
Can someone explain to me the point of these updates? support.microsoft.com/kb/2919355
> is a cumulative update that includes all previous released security updates and nonsecurity updates.
So, basically, it wants me to download these 890MB of updates I already installed?

Its a roll up, so if you're rebuilding, its simpler

@JourneymanGeek I'm not. It was offered through Windows Update

Ahh OK, thank god. Its bad enough I have no PC access until day after tomorrow...

No PC access :(

11:45 AM
@oliver him, that may be silly then
(And I need to rewrite my shitty nomination even if the comments do it for me :p)

Well, you need the full quote I guess:
> In addition to previous updates, it includes improvements such as improved Internet Explorer 11 compatibility for enterprise applications, usability improvements, extended mobile device management and improved hardware support.

Important All future security and nonsecurity updates for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 require this update to be installed. We recommend that you install this update on your Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer in order to receive continued future updates.
"Internet Explorer 11 compatibility for enterprise applications" read: "We made it work with your shitty IE6 optimized crapware"

Yeah. I am on my moto g which is tethered to my HTC one v, since my dad's non shitty 3g is a mini sim.

@JourneymanGeek That's just :(
On the other hand, yay, technology

Lol. I could have brought my laptop, how would I know there's a mod election going on ;p

@OliverSalzburg mabey it's "better" because instead of parts and pieces, it is more a whole tested thing like a service pack would be? (and they seemed to be most stable)

11:57 AM
@Psycogeek When I saw the download size in the Windows Update panel I first thought it would be a SP :D

it is like some of these games, we used to play for days on end with a game that fit on a cd, now it can be 20 freaking gigs , play out in 13 hours, and 50% of the time i was twiddling my thumbs watching some epic (cough cough) movie instead :-)
on the other planet, at some "how small can you make it" developers contest, some guy makes a fairly good 3D game using 64K.

@Psycogeek yes only requires a metric ton of power to get it up and running

12:14 PM
All i ever want is a good balance. I do not need the developers family photos left in the install :-)
(meaning a bit of code cleaning, observations of what is actually used, and to not install the 26 other languages i cant read)

Bob
12:28 PM
Anyone here use Greenshot? Can it do scrolling captures for non-IE browsers?

12:39 PM
@Bob Yes and no
Yes, I do use it like 100 times a day and, no, it can't do that
I wanted to add features to it, but, it's written in Borland C++ or something weird like that

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Well, that sucks :P
Came across a forum post saying they plan for Firefox scrolling in 1.2.

Or was it just some ancient .Net?

Bob
@OliverSalzburg wut

Now that I think about it, I think PuTTy/WinSCP were the Borland mindfuck. Greenshot was just very old .Net stuff that I couldn't get to run

Bob
.csproj
It's C#.

Bob
Wait, no, .NET 3.5 w/ VS2008.
@OliverSalzburg Eh, always happens.
VS2008 is still decently recent.
And now with VS2012/2013...
Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 11.00
# Visual Studio 2010
# SharpDevelop 4.2.2.8818
So, they're using 2010 but targeting .NET 3.5

SharpDevelop!

Bob
That works too.

12:44 PM
Well, the biggest problem was that it wouldn't run
I dunno, maybe because of their code signing setup or something
And by the time I would have cared enough to really get into it, they started adding a lot of features (yay)
And now it just works (tm)

Bob
...
Their MainForm is 1.3k lines long.
Wow.

Ah, regions.
It'd probably be pretty readable in an actual IDE with region collapsing.

@Bob I like the ReSharper panel where it displays an overview of the code and the regions. That made me start using regions :D
Coding C# with ReSharper... the good old days :(

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I can't afford ReSharper :(

@Bob Me neither :P

Bob
12:49 PM
Actually, I might be able to get the academic licence.. hrm...

I also can't afford a VS edition that can run extensions plugins :P

Bob
Though, even then it's $50. Worth it? I dunno.
@OliverSalzburg Heh, I'm lucky enough to have DreamSpark for now.

@Bob Download everything!

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I plan to :P
A month before it ends, DOWNLOAD ALL THE THINGS commences :D
If I ever buy VS, I'm gonna do it through a VPN.
Or see if I can't get someone in the US to do it for me. Cheaper to pay PayPal or other transfer + forex fees :\

@Bob I can relate to that

12:52 PM
Mine ended last week :(
I'll have to renew it

Getting hooked on DreamSpark is also a pain though
You have the latest version after it ends
But then they release updates... and you're still hooked on that 15k Ultimate Edition of VS

Bob
lol

And then you have to settle for the Express version 8(

Bob
It's just impractical to buy that as an individual :(

@Bob Even for a company. We wouldn't buy that ever

Bob
12:54 PM
That too.

You could hire someone to work for you for months for that money
So, the software would have to carry the same value as someone working 3 months full-time or something
So I would have to be 25% more efficient by using it or something like that
I don't understand who buys this software honestly

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Volume licensing.

@Bob Good point. I wonder how far down they go

@OliverSalzburg lol

Then I realized that most of my actions yesterday were due to extreme fatigue-induced depression. I slept for 13 hours last night and I feel somewhat better.
I realized that I can't leave when I just about cried at the thought of not being able to chat with my good friends @Bob and @JourneymanGeek. I just don't have what it takes to be a bully and compete in an election. I hate everything about it. I'm still glad I withdrew even after sleeping off the near-ragequit. Business as usual it is. I'll just pretend the election never happened.

@allquixotic what exactly did I miss?

@Sathya most of what went on, went on inside my own head, not in chat. :P
so in effect, you missed nothing, since I'm not going anywhere :P

1:28 PM
ok, but why withdraw?
shouldn't poke my nose too much, sorry

yes I am still here!

oh, and I'll fix my gravatar and profile eventually. I kinda like the identicon

@allquixotic I like it as well. The data one always looked like a confused dog

Does anyone use NFSv4 around here?

@baumgart I've used it a few times but it's not a daily thing for me
the kernel server or the user server?

1:40 PM
@allquixotic I've posted a question about NFSv4 on AIX...it seems to be a permissions issue, but I can't figure it out to save my life.

AIX?! whoa. no clue there -_-

Fair enough...
That seems to be the issue with any searching I do. Everything is about Linux...and all the AIX stuff refers to using Kerberos and/or LDAP.

I hate to say it (and some people might hate me for saying it) but I think you may have much better luck RE: AIX on unix.stackexchange.com

Fair enough, I'll try it out.

it's not that it's necessarily off-topic for SuperUser
just that people on unix.SE would know better, imho

1:42 PM
I'm so annoyed with it at this point I'll try anything.
It's a crappy environment, because I'm mounting between boxes that share user names but not UIDs/GIDs. And thus enters the issue...
But there's not really a better way to handle it, so... I'm stuck.

this looks like an issue that's so likely to be related to the AIX-specific implementation of NFS, or AIX's filesystem or something like that, that I'm not even going to take a guess, because I'll just end up confusing you (or me) more
I'm really a Linux guy when it comes to this stuff, sorry :(

I'm assuming the issue is just AIX being stupid...you know, like usual.
I pick on AIX, but to be honest I like working on it. Properly built, it's rock solid.
Is there a way to migrate my question over to unix.stackexchange.com, or do I have to re-post it?

@baumgart it can be migrated, but I'm not sure the SU mods will really want to migrate it

Fair enough. I'll re-post it, and reference it or something. Thank you!

there's a sort of... insular quality of wanting to keep questions asked on SU, on SU, as long as they're on topic, and I think the general wisdom is that you keep it here for a couple of days first to see if it gets any responses
no, please don't cross-post it
what I would recommend is that you please wait a day or two to see if it gets a response on SU
if it gets a response, you're good. if not, please flag the question and click the Other option and request migration to Unix.SE.
that course of action should mostly jive with the moderators/veteran users while giving your question the maximum exposure
@baumgart ^^

1:50 PM
Alright, I can live with that.

it's not a bad question, at least, so it'll eventually be migrated per your request, but the mods would want to give the question a chance of being handled by our community first, before tossing it over the fence.
unix.SE isn't a close vote migration path for SU, either, so it's not the type of thing that we get every day

Bob
@allquixotic noooooooooooooo

@Bob <3 it's ok. I'm not going anywhere :)

Bob
@allquixotic On one hand, I'm glad you like us enough to stay here. On the other, I'm now sad over the possibility of you leaving D=

in Unix and Linux, 1 min ago, by slm
@allquixotic That's fine with me, makes sense.
@Bob there's no possibility of me leaving, now. I just had to throw away my ego, and the mod election with it, and get rid of my fatigue, and return to normal.

2:06 PM
Thanks again for the info - I updated the question and added more detail about what I'm seeing, maybe that will get me some extra help.

@baumgart sorry for going back and forth on my advice to you, but I had to temper my kneejerk reaction with the things I've been told as far as best practices on migration

That's alright. I'd rather do the right thing.
That's why I didn't just chmod -R 777 on the filesystem in question... :)

Bob
@baumgart No please.

For the record, I would never do that. I have a special clue-by-four just for people that set 777 permissions.
I call it "Ole' Spikey."
2

@baumgart lol. nice. we had one of those yesterday in this chatroom

Bob
2:13 PM
@baumgart I'm more against the -R than the 777.
yesterday, by CBenni
I just chmod-ed it
-_-

you found it first :D
yesterday, by CBenni
I might just go chmod it to 777
@baumgart break out the clue-by-four :D

Ole Spikey is hungry for the blood of lusers...
I used to work at a university, in the group that supported the engineering department.
We dealt with students all the time. We had documents on how to handle permissions and groups for doing their group projects...our mistake was, of course, expecting people to read them.

lol

The helpdesk gremlins would always just tell them to chmod -R 777 on the project folders.
There was a distinct lack of broken fingers on their part...despite my strong desire.

@allquixotic meh you do not need to be mean to be in an election. I lost a few so far, so ego has naught to do with it. The day ec wins an election though... :p

2:23 PM
@JourneymanGeek not worried about EC
he'll never win

Course, easy for me to say. I do not even have a proper nomination ;p

just a little miffed at a lot of really old, really seriously inactive users coming out of the woodwork to run, as if they can suddenly start spending way more time on SU than they used to just because they have a ♦ now

That always happens!

Bob
@allquixotic I don't even recognise some of them, though that might be more indicative of my lack of time than theirs.

Funny thing is that's how I felt last elections?

2:26 PM
oh well, not worth talking about it now

And there are a few folk who are taking it too seriously

@all, what's with the gravatar?

@jokerdino I'm just going to let you scroll up in chat

I'm never going to Australia
that's messed up

@allquixotic Huh?

@Bob O RITE I LIVE IN THE US

@allquixotic Are you okay now? Do you plan to run for moderator again?

@allquixotic oo~ Take care man.

@all terriers tend to be

@DragonLord RE: first, yes. RE: second, no

2:34 PM
@allquixotic I understand it's annoying to see completely unqualified people trying to run for moderator, with no idea what it's like, but really, it's not something you should be upset about. The SE team will handle abuse as it should.

Would it be wrong of me to say "only in Canada"?

@allquixotic Pins and needles?

Canadians apologize a lot anyway :D
@Bob singular. :P
@JourneymanGeek or.... could it be.... an invisible WAUZER!

@allquixotic, best of luck in all of your future endeavors. I'm sorry to see this happen to you.

don't blame other species, silly dog.
@DragonLord just drop it please

@all wauzers tend to go for the front of the feet

@JourneymanGeek oh, ok. like a cat, then. yeah, my kitty likes to get my toes sometimes

(Nearly all of the humans in the family got bit by my canine alter ego as a plan up)

she can't stand it when I wear long pants that obscure part of my foot, though... it's like she imagines I have a bird hiding in the space between my foot and my leg... she will rub her head against my leg like "I like you", and then she'll turn around as she's about to walk away, and grab on with claws out and bite me

@Bob, were you ever a cricket fan?

Bob
@jokerdino No...

Australian football maybe?

Bob
Nope.
Never really cared for sports.
Played badminton for a bit. Not much else.

Ah.
I tried table tennis once. Too much hand-eye work.
Once, I was talking to a Fedora QA guy and we started discussing cricket before anyone knew it. Said he was happy to find a cricket guy since he left Down Under for the US.

Actually that makes sense
