Large bug, about 1-.1.5 cm x 5-7 mm, relatively slender, brown, with long antennae. That one unexpectedly appeared in my shower to scare the hell out of me and then disappeared in my back before I could take a picture. WHAT is it?

@Ariane umm.... it disappeared in your back? what does that even mean?

While I wasn't looking.

ah. I read that as "it burrowed itself in my rear-end" XD

o0
CALL THE CAT !

2:53 AM
@Ariane did it look like this?
Halyomorpha halys, also known as the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), or simply the stink bug, is an insect in the family Pentatomidae, and it is native to Korea and Taiwan. It was accidentally introduced into the United States, with the first specimen being collected in September 1998. The brown stink bug is considered to be an agricultural pest, and by 2010-11 had become a season-long pest in U.S. orchards. Description The adults are approximately long and about as wide, forming the "shield" shape characteristic of other stink bugs. They are various shades of brown on both the top a...

Lol no, how is that remotely slender?

anything I can think of is nightmare fodder

@somequixotic i have seen those !

2:54 AM
okay, can we please change the topic ?
I hate bugs

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forficula_auricularia
Looked a bit like this I say, but I'm not sure it was that because I don't remember seeing the "pincers" on its rear. And I think maybe it had longer antennae.

Centipedes (from Latin prefix ', "hundred", and ', ', "foot") are arthropods belonging to the class Chilopoda of the subphylum Myriapoda. They are elongated metameric creatures with one pair of legs per body segment. Despite the name, centipedes can have a varying number of legs from under 20 to over 300. Centipedes have an odd number of pairs of legs, e.g. 15 or 17 pairs of legs (30 or 34 legs). A key trait uniting this group is a pair of venom claws or forcipules formed from a modified first appendage. Centipedes are a predominantly carnivorous taxon. Centipedes normally have a drab co...

Lol, I can recognize a centipede. x.x
Also how suddenly it vanished implies it can probably fly. Which scares me even more.

ahh, earwigs

silverfish are quite common in moist bathrooms (you take a shower, and it's moist)
@JourneymanGeek new gravatar :)

2:56 AM
@somequixotic: yeah ;p

Also it clearly had the standard amount of legs.
I'm all paranoid now, and every funny feeling makes me panic. Being afraid of bugs is the worst. x.x

@Gowtham as far as I'm concerned, they can stay in Korea and Taiwan where they're native to! but they've been invading North and South America like a plague lately, taking over other bugs and wiping them out, and being pests to plant life too

standard?

And a couple of weeks ago one of those bugs fell from above on my hand, in my bathroom again. And a couple of months ago, there was a larva in my electric razor's head, and the larva's shedded skin next to it. And just two days ago there was a horrendously huge spider that infiltrated through the hole in my screen door. Seriously, this is a nightmare.

@Ariane o_O
late summer / early fall is the peak of creepy-crawly insect activity, by the way, as if you couldn't tell

3:02 AM
I don't wanna. To hell with life and biodiversity, I want them all extinct. Immediately.

but then we'd all die
seriously, we would
we'd die of starvation because the ecosystem that we depend on for food would cease to function
and it'd happen quickly -- as quickly as the extinction of all bugs happened

Blah, if I can survive for a week without bugs it's worth it.
Kidding. Partly.

we've been taking walks around the building at work to be social and get exercise, and when we do, we always get attacked by spiderwebs hanging from the trees
it's gross, lol

It's gross, but if there's no bug on it it's not scary.

generally there aren't spiders in them but sometimes we've seen spiders crawling in webs along the side of the path

3:06 AM
I didn't think I had a voice powerful enough to produce a scream. Hell, put a big disgusting bug in my face and then make me walk on something that makes me believe it might be the bug and you'll hear two big ones, horror movie quality.

I wonder how I became this way. I used to only be really scared of wasps and similar dangerous things. Now I'm even uneasy around ants.

lol
I just hate small spiders

I've become slightly braver, but I still hate spider webs, even if there's no spider associated

Only the small ones? Usually the bigger the worst for me.

3:10 AM
as long as the spider can't move extremely fast or jump, I don't mind actual spiders as much, especially if they're not on me
if they're on some other object and just chilling out, I really don't mind

heh
@somequixotic: I'm still kinda in love with the moto X ;p

Also pretty much every spider can move lightning fast if they feel like it.

@Ariane but jumping spiders are extremely rare in our part of the world
I think I hate jumping and flying things more than crawling things

Oh, there are none that I know of here. Thank god. I would lock myself in a glass cage.

...with 100 spiders? XD

3:11 AM
Not THAT cage.

snakes?

Snakes if they're not the dangerous kind are actually less scary than some bugs.

I don't like snakes because I know some are poisonous and that's bad, but I honestly would kind of tolerate a non-poisonous snake, in the "hey there little guy!" sense

Snakes, have seen a 7 foot one fighting with my cat ;p

The heck. xD
But sheesh, that sucks. I'm completely paranoid. I'm afraid to go to bed.

3:13 AM
Get a cat ;p

domesticated snakes are awesome
wild ones, not so much

I just must get a lover who isn't scared of bugs one day. I need a personal anti-bug knight. x.x

or a 42 gallon drum of Raid
and a refillable spray bottle

I'll probably die too.
Not to mention that dealing with bug corpses isn't exactly fun either.

but better than dealing with live bugs

3:15 AM
Yes. But there remains the issue of me dying.
Oh yeah, I want a house with futuristic security lasers forming a perfect box around it. It scans whatever tries to go through it and if it's a bug, it becomes black powder.
Now, if there's a little dysfunction, I'll annihilate visitors or even myself, but that's only a detail, isn't it?

A laser poweful enough to turn a bug into ash will melt your eyes ;p

Not if it's magical futuristic technology that does absolutely nothing but the intended purpose. o:

@Ariane actually, even without the lasers, there are technologies and materials available for modern houses that, for both efficiency and anti-bug purposes, form a perfect seal around the interior of the house from the environment. it keeps the desired temperature inside without taxing your A/C as much, and it keeps bugs out unless you open a door or window and let them in.
older structures lack these features and so you'll see more bugs

That sounds good. Although it doesn't help me in my 1960 apartment building with a broken screen door. xD

@somequixotic: we have cobras and pythons
both are pretty dangerous to small terriers.
ironically the pythons are scarier, the cats chase off the cobras.

3:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek that doesn't surprise me; after all, a python can bite you with a TypeError when you least expect it, while a cobra just gives you a Command not found
that's my original geek joke for the day.

Cobra was a programming language too?

I wish you could program stuff like if(!empty($bugs)) { foreach($bugs as $target) { unlink($target); } }

@Ariane No. that's the point.

Hah?

3:35 AM
but a python will lure you in and make you want to use it, and then -- when you least expect it, like in a high-stakes sales demo -- you get a crash, and a TypeError.
so the non-existent language cobra is better than python because it doesn't fake you out and then ruin you at runtime.

I... see.

3:50 AM
sleepy time, goodnight! snuggle some bugs when you get to sleep @Ariane ;-)

Please die.

@JourneymanGeek riiiight... totally believable

Bob
4:07 AM
oh bloody fuck
I've been agonising over a program's failure to load a DLL with some cryptic error for a week
I forgot it was an AnyCPU build, which defaults to 64-bit. And that was a 32-bit unmanaged DLL.
That would explain why it worked on the 32-bit WIn8 VM and Win2008r2 server, but not the 64-bit Win7 machines.

4:37 AM
Hi guys
Can I ask network related questions on super user?

4:55 AM
I believe you can.

the issue is with "websocket"
and there is no websocket tag

5:14 AM
Use something related if the tag doesn't exist. Or I think you can create a tag as long as you fill some criteria, and then moderators will judge it. Something like that.
Anyway I'll be off to bed now.

5:39 AM
Websockets might exist as a tag with an s. I'm on my phone so I cannot check

I feel dirty now.
Hey, @Jou got a new Gravatar too!

We should have a mass Gravatar change. Make everyone unrecognisable :P

lol
I think my gravatar is recognisable no matter what ;p

@Bob Great idea

Bob
Norton. Would you just fuck off and stop deleting my files without warning?
...I really need to uninstall that piece of malware.
And purge it from my system.
Perhaps with a hammer.

9:42 AM
why did you even have that installed? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek wasn't my choice at the time :P

I think norton is a little like prescribing cyanide to keep away the common cold ;p

10:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek Norton prevents executables from running, therefore no viruses. You can't argue with that level of protection.
Unless of course you actually want to run an executable

What's the deal with everyone getting new avatars, @JourneymanGeek, @OliverSalzburg? :P

Bob
1 hour ago, by Bob
We should have a mass Gravatar change. Make everyone unrecognisable :P

The grass comes up as solid black on Opera Mobile.
@JourneymanGeek Hm, really? :P

yeah, I have a bunch of avas lined up on gravatar ;p
even a christmas hat ava, in case the SF guys annoy me about it ;p

@Bob I like that suggestion.
But I never know what avatar to pick.

lol
@slhck: it probably helps that there's a theme for me
(that said, I suspect if we get another dog, I'll insist its called Journeyman... )

@slhck I don't know. I feel like @Bob suggested it

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Nah, that was definitely after @JourneymanGeek changed.

10:44 AM
I even switched it up once more a moment ago
22 suggested edits to review!

@OliverSalzburg: mostly retags

Q: Right click drag drop not working

Alex KeyI used to be able to right click and drag and drop into a new folder. To move a group of files into a new folder using tortoisehg source control. The right click drag drop doesn't seem to be working. On doing some research people are suggesting that a window management addon breaks right click...

@Bob: I guess they're not used to the way newlines are handled in markdown

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That usually has the opposite effect.
Those hard breaks look quite intentional

@Bob: try 'editing' it and moving the hard breaks up

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm?

Seems like the author isn't used to writing paragraphs. Must have twitteritis
We have a tag O_o ...and now it's cleaned up

1:20 PM
hi all,is it possible to use the empty space of windows hard drive to mount on ubuntu?
the windows drive is with ntfs
is it possible to mount the empty space to ubuntu on a dual booting machine?

@Vignesh4303 empty space as of unallocated space ?

@Gowtham yes its unallocated

@Vignesh4303 Use Gparted or something similar to make that a partition.

@Gowtham one question arises maybe its dump,how come the unallocated space on windows allocated to linux in a dual boot machine?i.e they both are diffrent format partitions,how they share space b/w them?
in a dual booting machine

Both the OS have RAW access to the HDD, they should both be able to read the data in all the partitions
Windows will be able to read ext4(using some ext4 mounter) and Ubuntu should be able to read NTFS using ntfs3g

1:28 PM
got it thanks :) i ll try it out with the gpart :)

New Gravatar!

Now I have to change my gravatar sigh

I read a comment by someone earlier that they wanted us all to change our gravatars, so I figured I'd play along :)
I still have a cat in my gravatar, but not JUST a cat, now, lol
it's Data from TNG "holding" Spot (very awkwardly)

@somequixotic The video from your profile is gone ;p

oh well :(

1:37 PM
What are you guys? Got some kind of virus that everybody changed their avatar recently?

bleh need to reset my wp password to change my gravatar

@somequixotic And your avatar? White Star Trek guy strangling cat. Why so cruel?

@Boris_yo umm, you really had to have watched TNG to understand
first of all, he's an android, so he's clumsy and not fully human in his social interactions
second of all, he has absolutely no malice towards that cat, and is merely trying to hold it, and the cat doesn't get hurt after all
notice he's holding it by the body and not by the neck

@Sathya Aw thanks man.
@Bob thanks!

hbd @KronoS !

1:49 PM
Gracias @Gowtham

btw, Please don't get overly excited and destroy the solar system

@KronoS wait, Peaches is a cat? I thought Peaches was a person

@somequixotic Isn't Peaches Data's cat?

Micro soft cat peaches is

Oh wait nope... that's spot

1:58 PM
@KronoS um, no. Spot is Data's cat.

I know not of this person "Peaches" aparently

there were actually something like 10 different cats that appeared on the show and/or movies that played Spot, I guess because their owners kept not wanting to re-appear the same cat... and probably at least one of them died... although TNG was only produced over 7 years, so one cat could have easily outlived the show, before and after

She's a girl who used to frequent AU chat room and JD misses her

Ah... young binary love torn asunder over the ages

Aren't you 18 -_-
oh wait that's nhikle

@Gowtham Tack on another 9 years and you'll have it :)

I forgot that one is still in business.

2:10 PM
@jokerdino Motorola, you mean? They got bought by Google and have made a comeback.

@jokerdino It pulled out of India

@Gowtham so that's why.

They make excellent Android smartphones.

@somequixotic i remember that. 'patent trove'

But not for India apparently :(

2:12 PM
@KronoS lol :)

@Gowtham at least he got the date right ;)

lol

Privacy (from "separated from the rest, deprived of something, esp. office, participation in the government", from privo "to deprive") is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves or information about themselves and thereby reveal themselves selectively. The boundaries and content of what is considered private differ among cultures and individuals, but share basic common themes. Privacy is sometimes related to anonymity, the wish to remain unnoticed or unidentified in the public realm. When something is private to a person, it usually means there is something within th...
