@Ariane xD
they did this with remote access?
@slhck ...I just realised I do that far too much.
though, often the successful restart is accompanied by a System Restore

To those who may be interested, there is a new site proposal for an Arduino specific site area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/49538/arduino . Support it if you think it is a good idea :)

How fast should i accept an answer as correct?

Bob
10:35 AM
@ShadowHero as soon as an answer that solves the problem to your satisfaction appears
if a better one appears, you can change the accepted one anyway
don't feel obligated to mark an answer if none of them solve your problem, though
or if an answer leads you to your solution (or you find your own some other way), feel free to answer it yourself

What the?
Where is my checkbox?

12:07 PM
@OliverSalzburg You can't have a checkbox

It was actually there before I made the screenshot :P

@OliverSalzburg Nefarious :P

I just wanted to complain that they're releasing somewhat critical updates but still push the Ask toolbar
And, bam, the checkbox was gone :P
And now I still don't have that update...

I disabled Java entirely

What is Java?

12:13 PM
I no longer know ;P
I'd like to see Java (the plugin at least) go the way of Flash

Honestly I haven't come across a single website that needed to run a Java applet in the last year.

Perhaps it recognizes your user agent and decides not to show you one in advance :P
I hate how Android sites try to render flash even when its not supported, whereas the ipad/ios devices get a non-flash site :@

Yeah, Flash simply needs to die. In that way I like the Apple policy (although I thought it was nonsense at first).

Well it would help if there were more standardized native frameworks to take its place
In some sense I don't understand why Google et al aren't working harder to make even better web tools

Well, HTML5 in the long run I guess

12:41 PM
@IvoFlipse I tried that recently, but some site required Java the same day :P
And it was some key-generation thing or something that I also couldn't pass on

Meh?

Q: How to bypass a firewall which asks for username and password

Rahul SharmaHere in my college we have a firewall installed by Fortinet. Whenever we open Firefox it asks for a username and password ... Once we enter that, accessing the internet is possible but with very very limited sites. Can you help in finding out a way to bypass this firewall. I cannot even open th...

Either too localized or NC

@Shiki More like *tear*?

seriously, what the heck...
I never thought my open-cased PC is a "dangerous" machine...

Yeah, better have the IEC check that.

12:44 PM
Also: how can you even hurt yourself? it won't even cut your finger... (never put anything else there ... but after this EU regulation, I have my doubts about people...)

Almost like a rule they'd invent for the US
Warning: Do not put your pets inside the computer case!
(for drying, you know)

I wonder what will the EU become...
I mean... sure this is just only _one_ stupid idea..
But they already made so many retarded ones...
(Even Steam will have trouble as you have to be able to re-sell your used games. Two options. Either EU will stop making these laws, or we will have some crazy-ass restricted union. Wonder when they will install the great-EU-Firewall)

1:11 PM
First they want to force Steam to allow me to resell my games, now they force Apple not to sell Mac Pros anymore? What has this union come to??!!
Seriously, it's slowly becoming the next stone age over here!
I wish we had real freedom like in America!

1:28 PM
'murca!

It's basically just a way to show "we have power". Nothing more.
They sue companies all the time just because they can. ("Yes we can." Anyone?)

1:47 PM
Nah. It is also "we set the rules, and they apply to all"
Not just to a small subset and ignoring friends.

2:02 PM
oliver
the last line you wrote is the biggest lie ever
I hope it was sarcasm
I really do
@Hennes does the chat show your own reputation when you post, because if ti does it's show double what mine actually is

ah
Makes sense

Maybe I chat too much with math people :)

Although almost a horrible idea, as a person could just sign into all the sites, come to chat with 3-4k rating and not know a thing

I was actually considering the sigma sign

2:07 PM
I would have said go for it

nvm

Ah I need to make something to eat, got to leave for work few hours earlier than nromal
I was going to say slhck, don't make me repeat that

@user88311 You can quote chat messages, no need to repeat them :P

It would be just as bad seeing it again

Arh. too much cut and paste (hence the && ||)
Ah, it feels good to answer a shell question and press post before Nicole posts a much better answer. :)

You can be lucky grawity's not that active.

so yes I started this. gemsfromstackexchange.tumblr.com submit your Stack Exchange WTFs to me using this link

@Sathya !!

:-D

Now I have to dig out all my screenshots and send them to you.

Mind you, I do enjoy the better answer and the reasoning why they work better

2:27 PM
@slhck looking forward to those :P

@Sathya Hm. Can't search for URLs in chat? I should have put all those screenshots on my computer somewhere.

@slhck just put the hostname in the search:P

@Sathya Doesn't work for me?

hmm?

@Sathya i.stack.imgur.com won't work :P

2:30 PM
ah
stack.imgur does

Weird.

@slhck now accepting submissions :D

@Sathya Wait, already compiling a list.

@slhck I meant from the site itself - there's an option to submit a post ;)

2:45 PM
@Sathya Ah, okay. Well, I could do that for weeks I guess :P

@slhck :P

First one submitted.

Curses vim. Why can't I subst CR (control-v control-J or enter)

@Boris_yo Sweet thundery zeus my squib

@OliverSalzburg Well it does cause disconnections. Thought you are familiar and experienced same.
@HackToHell I am Titan. I also hold lightning in my hand and already wasted a lot of electricity from energy company that they are coming at me.

But I have a wand and I melt titanium for rocketry

@HackToHell lol

@Boris_yo The message sounds like it was logged because the network was disconnected
As in, the TCP/IP NetBios Helper was stopped because the network was disconnected

The cause:

"The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{0AEC6A94-A1CE-4DCB-AB1F-4B07816F0083} because a master browser was stopped."
I am not running elections here matey! Arrrgh!
@OliverSalzburg Will find out after looking at this:
https://www.google.com/search?q=The+browser+has+forced+an+election+on+network&oq=The+browser+has+forced+an+election+on+network&aqs=chrome.0.57j64l2&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#hl=en&tbo=d&sclient=psy-ab&q=the+browser+has+forced+an+election+on+network+because+a+master+browser+was+stopped%22&oq=the+browser+has+forced+an+election+on+network+because+a+master+browser+was+stopped%22&gs_l=serp.3..0j0i30j0i8i10i30j0i8i30.2858.8281.3.8566.5.5.0.0.0.0.143.616.0j5.5.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1j8.2.serp.gmp3vRY9zRA&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv

3:27 PM
@Boris_yo I would assume "The browser" is the Windows Browser service
To my understanding, there's always one master browser in the workgroup that keeps track of all connected client.
So the message would indicate that the (previous) master browser on the network has gone offline (or was otherwise disconnected) and your client is now becoming the new master

@OliverSalzburg Does that happen when I switch between browsers?

@Boris_yo It's not related to web browsers

@OliverSalzburg What client?
@OliverSalzburg Computer Browser such as explorer.exe process?

I really don't know how I could explain it more clearly right now :D
Your "client" is your Windows PC
And the Computer Browser service seems to live in C:\Windows\System32\browser.dll
But I doubt that'll have any relevance

3:45 PM
Boris: computer browser (as in browse to a named windows computer) rather than a web-browser.

It really only maintains the Name<->IP Address relationship on a network/workgroup without DNS IIRC

The Domain Master Browser is necessary on a routed TCP/IP network, that is, when a Windows domain spans more than one TCP/IP network. When a Windows domain spans multiple subnets each of the subnets has an independent browser called the Master Browser. The Master Browser is responsible for the browse list within its respective subnet and portion of the domain on its subnet. The Domain Master Browser is used to collect information from each of the Master Browsers via the NetServerEnum API call. Once collected the list is merged with the Domain Master Browsers list for its own subnet. This m...
oh. PDC reference. Old article

@Hennes The concept of the PDC still lives

as in FSMO roles?

But, yeah
I wouldn't claim to understand it, but I've come by the PDC emulation aspect when one of the DCs at a client went down

3:51 PM
I only learned about domain controllers long after we no longer ran NT. At that time I mostly busied myself with reinstalling windows computer from CD (not even images)
I was very happy when I learned how to use ghost and when I got the IT department to neatly store and document image creation.
Later I learned that I was cloning images with the same SSID, which at the time was complete abracadabra to me

I have learned quite a bit since, but I never caught up on PDB.BDC

@Hennes You mean all network cards were looking for that SSID?

Nah, all of basic stuff ran pretty well.
Actually much better than before. Same settings for all users. faster reimaging. A lot more up to date stuff (usual install fetched outdated drivers from a network share. I reorganised that so we had drivers/printers|network|graphics|.../model/OS
Ran into many duplicates
Somehow I think of it as my best job performance ever.
I can't say that to HR though because it is sooooo simple and logical
Well. Maybe if I phrase it as "chaotic" -> "well orderened, structured work"

@Hennes From what I understand, the "old" concept of PDC/SDC/BDC/WDC was replaced. But in the current concept they use the FSMO as you mentioned. One FSMO is the PDC Emulator role

3:57 PM
So simple and logical that he can understand?

That one looks to smart to be in HR

Hehe...
This is dog monopoly.

Hat, monocle, dog, .... which ones did I miss ?

Smoking tube
Sherlock's
Pretty good knowledge for human resources manager. @Hennes
They knew they have got smart guy running their business. They paid you double wages at least?

Nah, they downsided.
From 14 people to 5
I was the last new guy

4:00 PM
@Hennes Downsized?

First fjob was at a newly formed TNO industry.

Here is the dream of every business:

Replace everybody with Super Man to do everything

POst workd-war II the country was economically in a bad shape. Gov. funded several research projects. (e.g. into plaastics, into texile, into concrete, into iron structures).. All had their own place.
Slowly those merged.
And the merged ones merged again. TNO industry was a merger of three of those with the IT staff of all three.

@Hennes That's after Great Depression?

Aye
Great Depression was around WW-1 times
In this case they needed extra personal while things formed and stabilised. And then they reduced personel

4:03 PM
Then everything started to come back in its place, manufacturing got high... When was great demand, they employed a lot of people and these days they lay off. Because they outsource abroad?

I learned a lot at that place. Including a lot of things not to do
such as taking coffee into a server room and spilling it
Using 7 meter cables to patch 30cm (because the 7m cables where cheaper)

@Hennes Would you mind uploading this into my brain?

/me grins. I uploaded it to the power socket. Connect one pin to one ear, and the other pin ..
Would have helped some people.

@Hennes That's LANcution man!

E.g. we wrote a helpdesk system in access. No unique keys. Opening a new form would grab the number of the latest saved form and add one. Do they simultaneously with 2 IT people and it created doubles
I know a tiny bit about databases. E.g. primary keys, foreign keys, 3rd normal form.
The creator/coder of the helpdesk thing did not

4:07 PM
@Hennes I wonder how you craved HelpDesk web application...

The web was rather new at that time
There was gopher though

@Hennes Like FTP?

Sort of, but FTP needs to die.

@Hennes You want me to Finish Him?

plain text authenthication. Random high ports for data.
FTP works well enough if you have no NAT.
But with NAT you need trickery

4:10 PM
@Hennes If you know this trickery sell a book on it!

It is well documented.
Anyway, I do not want people to learn how to use FTP or NAT.
Both should have died decades ago
Just configure a proper firewall and/or use IPv6
The closest I come is :%s/\n\{2,}/\rSomemarkerNotFoundElsewhereInTheText\r/e to replace all double newlines with a marker, followed by :%j to join all line and %s/SomemarkerNotFoundElsewhereInTheText/^M^M/g to replace the marker. Ugly as hell and I am sure there is a better way. — Hennes 59 mins ago
You know that someone has worked too long for corporation when the answer looks like those three commands.

4:52 PM
Ah, nice:
Drive failure sounds

@sathya I'm innocent

@IvoFlipse aye

5:36 PM

2 hours later…
7:10 PM
hey guys
i need something like Spotify
software that would ensure that I can't be traced down
The thing is that when I watch JustinTV, it asks me to buy premium account
There is a limited number of people that can connect to the JustinTV channel that I watch .... onlye like 5 or 10 people from my country
and it's always the case that when I come to watch the channel... there is already those 5 people watching that JustinTV channel, so I can't watch it
.... technically, I can watch it but have to refresh the website every minute and after each minute the stream is stopped and it asks me to buy the premium account
which is really crazy watching the channel for 3 hours and refreshing the website every single minute
I'm sorry ... the software that is able to anonymize my IP address and create a VPN is not called Spotify but Spotflux
But when I use it - Spotflux, it works great and hides my IP address perfectly, but I suppose it makes my Internet connection slower .. the stream is really lagging...
So, if anybody doesn't know any other IP hiding software
;-)

8:18 PM
@EinsteinsGrandson You can not hide your IP address
Spotflux also doesn't hide it
You simply connect to their server and their server connects to JustinTV
Your connection to Spotflux creates what is commonly known as a VPN
So instead of using your router to connect to JustinTV, you use the router of Spotflux to connect to JustinTV. Then JustinTV will think that you're a computer on the network of Spotflux and not on the network of Einsteins Grandson
So your IP address isn't hidden, it's just not relevant anymore, because you use an IP address from Spotflux
This should also illustrate that all traffic first flows to Spotflux and then to your home PC.
So you suffer huge performance penalties due to the long path the data has to take

9:08 PM
So, is there any alternative that would not make my connection so slow?
;-)

Download to an server outside your country, then watch later (streaming from disc)
Darn. I missed the obvious answer. (getting a premium account).

9:37 PM
@EinsteinsGrandson A faster VPN provider or purchasing that premium account
I see @Hennes already had that option covered :D

We both are kicking in obviously open doors. :)
