1:02 PM
Morning

Bob
@OliverSalzburg 430 tabs on my laptop, 400-450 on my desktop. my screen is nowhere near wide enough to show all of them

@Bob Damn... :D
But I found my problem now and will close all of them :P

Bob
the only way my browser hasn't hit the 32-bit limit yet is cause Firefox doesn't actually load tabs until you click on them (when resuming)
I almost never close tabs.. I think I have a couple open from early 2012.. from a different computer
also, I suddenly want 10k rep. time to answer questions again! :P

:D
Now I managed to jump to an <a> in an HTML page without reloading the page \o/
What an achievement...
You would think you could just <a href="#lulz">to teh lulz</a>

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ...isn't that a standard anchor? :S

1:11 PM
@Bob Yeah, but in Angular it's translated to "Please load the current page at that anchor"
Unless you supply a magic keyword in the "route"

Bob
huh.

Which was only added 2 months ago Oo

Bob
:S

Oh no wait, that was the bug report I was reading
0
Q: How can I prevent my page from being reloaded when linking to an anchor?

Oliver SalzburgI have a couple of anchors on my page which look like this: <a ng-href="#1363219200000">03/14/2013<i class="icon-chevron-right"></i></a> Further down the page I have an anchor like: <a name="1363219200000" class="tableAnchor" href=""></a> Now when I click...

There's all the magic anyway ;P

Bob
why use name?

1:17 PM
I've seen id and name being used. Didn't seem to make any difference

Bob
name is apparently not valid HTML5

@Bob Fixed it in the post. ;D

Bob
The name attribute is obsolete.

<a name="section5"/>

I was trying out a lot of crazy stuff to get this to work

1:30 PM
@slhck I was actually worried a little more about the other one. They were both admittedly a little borderline

@JourneymanGeek Yeah. I'm just not in favor of deleting them right away because they could possibly be useful.
But most of the people don't fix their posts unfortunately.

yeah :/

Bob
argh
can i downgrade to Win7? :(
stupid Win8
BSoDs 75% of the time when I plug in/unplug wireless mice

I hate win8

Bob
looks like some conflict between Microsoft's driver and some new security feature. Great job.

1:41 PM
Designed for cell hpones and tablets, should not be on computers
phones*

Bob
@user88311 well, that's just the interface
I'm talking about a kernel/default driver issue completely unrelated to the interface :\
the UI is easy enough to replace (e.g. Start8)
the kernel? not so much

Hate the fact they are discontinuing wlm to and only supporting skype, for god damn flaws in skype than anything on the planet
I know

Bob
@user88311 heh. still haven't installed skype
probably not going to

But still I'm no fan of it, fun fact with win7-8 on tablets or phones, if you put a sd/microsd card in the phone/tablet and take it out, it fries the phone and tablet
same
Never will I use skype
phone/tablet and card*
multi tasking before I even get in the shower is not the best idea

Bob
@user88311 o.O
fries?

1:45 PM
total'd
discovered it from employees at work finding out the hard way
At first thought it was just a 1 in a million chance, another guy tried it, nope happens on them all

Bob
ok, that's just wtf

apparently the OS "combines" the external storage with it's own and recognizes it as one big drive, and when you pull it, it thinks you broke the drive

Bob
uhhhhh
ok, who's smart idea was that?

no sweet clue but I hope he was fired
probably the source of at least 1million + buying new sim cards and phones

Bob
there's no reference anywhere to this issue
I honestly don't see someone being stupid enough to automatically span the OS (or any) partition onto removable media
maybe an option to do it manually, but even then that would be pretty stupid

1:51 PM
Sadly, it's true, don't beleive me, try it yourself or dissect the OS
well I'm jumping in the shower be back in a few

Bob
@user88311 not that I don't believe you specifically, it's just the whole thing sounds so stupid :\

2:14 PM
@Bob It was the idea of the SECURE disgital storage card makers
In other words, it is a designed feature
Insett SD card, chat to the card telling to only work with that device (aka activating the secure part of SD.
Not that the SD gets broken, it is just locked
Secure Digital or (SD) is a non-volatile memory card format for use in portable devices, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, GPS navigation devices, and tablet computers. The Secure Digital standard is maintained by the SD Card Association (SDA). SD technologies have been implemented in more than 400 brands across dozens of product categories and more than 8,000 models. The Secure Digital format includes four card families available in three different form factors. The four families are the original Standard-Capacity (SDSC), the High-Capacity (SDHC), the eXtended-Capacity (SDXC), ...
huh, why did chat just auto add that picture?

@Hennes It always does, doesn't it?

A picture, yes
I always assumed the first picture found
But in this case the choice really surprised me
It is just about the only non SDcard picture on a picture rich page. Not the top most rendered one, not the last.

Bob
lol

Yeah, weird
No idea how the oneboxing works

oneboxing includes ONE of the pictures from wiki methinks

2:27 PM
It gets it right most of the time. So it is not a problem. However now I am curious. :)

3:01 PM
Before I forget about this: This was the part I wanted to highlight:
Windows Phone 7 devices use SD cards designed for access only by the phone manufacturer or mobile provider. An SD card inserted into the phone underneath the battery compartment becomes locked "to the phone with an automatically generated key" so that "the SD card cannot be read by another phone, device, or PC".
[32] Symbian devices, however, are some of the few that can perform the necessary low-level format operations on locked SD cards. It is therefore possible to use a device such as the Nokia N8 to reformat the card for subsequent use in other devices.

Nice to know, I'll let the employees at work know so that they can fix their sd cards
or rather, unlock them
Well I'm going to dd that barracuda with the back up again as to fresh start when I get that power supply tomorrow or monday

@Hennes it came to mind, if this is indeed a issue with the power supply, I've noticed something, if the psu is only slightly heated a couple of degrees, enough to start up windows, if I plug to many USB devices in it crashes, I assume because of the extra power draw, would it not be possible then that the same issue is occurring when I plug a cable into the onboard ethernet adapter since I assume it uses more energy than the USB ports

@HackToHell One day, all languages will have all features!

One day ...

3:16 PM
Ethernet (100mbit) does not use much power, though I think gigabit NICs can consume a few (2-5?) Watts

It is indeed gigabit
let me check the USB power

USB is up to 500mWatt per USB 2 port (900 for the USB3's)
But there are easy ways to test that. Start prime95 or any other CPU intensive application and you will use a lot more power.
How much more depends on the CPU, but in my case it jumps over 100 Watt

none the less if ethernet uses 3-5 watts and usb is 500mwatt (I assume you mean milliwatt not mega, as I don't think a stand computer can even use that much power without melting) it could be possible since if I plug in say 3-4 devices, it will crash and result in same loading process sometimes as when I have the ethernet cord plugged in

Aye. milli., small m, capital M for Mega.

Well, wish I had talked with you much sooner, as I could have had this fixed, let's see, 6 months ago
That's if this fixes it
let's just hope the assumption is right

3:26 PM
Oh, the yelling kids question is already in our top 4 highest voted…

none the less if it fixes the boot problem I have the usb ethernet adapter

Aye.
All we did was logical testing.
s/logical/methodical/

I hope that employee has a 250watt psu, as no stores around carry anything beloow 600
below*

Weird. (not carrying smaller PSU's)
I know many systems use a GPU which claims the require "at least an XXX watt PSU". Which is not quite true.
Just a correlation with needed "X ampere at +12v" which roughly corresponds with biggers PSU's

I have a GPU in my am1100, I could probably use a higher voltage, but I prefer to play it safe and just go for exact same voltage
Might just drop by my hometown (Not the middle of a county side, one of the larger cities in canada) and go to the stores there since they actually carry parts one would need
Oh sure I'll be driving for more than a few hours to get it but wouldd be worth it

3:41 PM
uhm. two items

Bob
@user88311 could also be a grounding issue with the USB port/connector

1) Voltage is the same for all PSUs. small 130 Watt ones, huge 1200 Watt ones
@bob and network. Since it also resets on that one

Slight typo on my part

Bob
@Hennes the MB could be borked? :P

but yeah bob it onyhappens when I plug 3-4+ USB devices in with USB
only*

3:42 PM
2) a larger PSU does not provide more power unless it is needed.
It is a waste though if you do not use it and the 600 Watt PSU is more expensive

that to
300 bucks to 100 is bit of a difference

Usually you want a PSu where you never use more than 80-90% of its max rated power, and never less than 10-20%. The reason for that is the efficiency curve

Bob
@user88311 could be overload

My blink(1) just arrived \o/

Bob
3:45 PM
500 mW is not per port; it's per controller

Example eff. curve for a rather good PSU

Hennes gets similar problem to me bob

Bob
of course, some motherboards provide individual power to ports - but not all MBs will do that

My beeping might be a 'CPU overheated' warning. But the CPU runs fine at 40-ish C

Bob
USB power draw (barring a short or grounding issue) is negligible relative to other components

3:46 PM
I need lunch, I'll be back

O__O
@DavidCollantes - These are very small kids. I've installed all games that there are in gentoo repo (about 900), but they prefer simple flash games from a10.com. Of cause I limit play time to about 1h/day. — Leonid Volnitsky 9 mins ago

Current CPU temperature: 34 C
Room at 20C
Way below t_junction or any sane BIOS warning level
some-magic is xargs
or just echo /usr/portage/games-* | emerge-em-all

Not sure if emerge takes through a pipe, probably not.

emerge /usr/portage/games-* ?

That won't work.

3:49 PM
The shell should have expanded the * to a lot of names
Ah.
Works for the freeBSD ports trees (and I use it for things like 'portupgrade /var/db/pkg/php5-*' )

Though you can probably do cd /usr/portage/ && emerge games-**/* or so.

(to only update already installed php5 packages)

Above command works, though something masks some game, meh.
@Hennes: Hmm, actually it doesn't... emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "games-action/metadata.xml".
Maybe everything that contains a -

Worst case trigger emerge a lot of times. (find, exec emerge)

I try to avoid find, xargs when I can.

Q: 10bit monitors advantages?

ShadowHeroTo support 10bit color the following are needed: a) a monitor supporting it b) a GPU supporting it (only AMD FirePro and NVIDIA Quadro support this?) c) compatible software Now, about the c part, unless I am mistaken there are VERY few programs out there supporting 10 bit color. Photoshop is a ...

Well, now I need to accept all licenses. :D

Not that I do not have access to a linux based host atm. All my linux VMs are deleted to make space

Bob
while it's about niche hardware, the question as it currently is is pretty not-constructive :\

@OliverSalzburg Much nicers than abusing the three keyboards LEDs to display the load (up to 3)

3:55 PM
@Hennes I'm not really sure what to do with them honestly ;D

I fear that that user might buy a nice 10bit card and get a TN monitor :-)

...maybe plug them into my Pi and blink them all day long

@Bob Meh. The user would do so much better asking all these questions in chat.

Bob
@slhck does anyone in chat even use such a screen? :P

@Bob Nah, probably not :P

Bob
3:56 PM
I'm still on a 24" TN screen
or 15" 1366x768 TN on my laptop
no IPS here
definitely no 10-bit colour depth
heck, not even a high pixel density
some of you have those Korean 27" IPS screens?

@Bob I do. AFAIR Ivo has at least one as well

Bob
how much were they anyway?
I forgot

@Bob Too cheap to pass :P
Mine was 350€ IIRC
One of the more expensive ones actually

I hope the other guys don't mind my edits. Also, nice comment cleaning whomever did that.

Bob
eh. looks like around $400
still a good $150 more than a TN 27"
I've seen IPS screens before; could never really tell a difference. then again, my eyesight is pretty crap

4:03 PM
@Bob The quality is amazing compared to my old Samsung SyncMaster 245B screens
...which cost 400€ a piece at the time

Bob
:P

I tried to reword the question about the 10-bit screens. I think it doesn't need to be closed.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg how old is that model?

@Bob No idea. 2008 maybe?
Seems like even earlier

Bob
just from the specs alone, a better one could probably be purchased for less than half that price now

4:06 PM
@Bob Well, I also bought them around that time, in case that wasn't clear :D

Bob
don't we all just love tech depreciation? :P
/s

bob
don't even get started on me with that
it's the reason I know plan to study biology

Bob
@user88311 on what?

don't we all just love tech depreciation? :P

/s

Bob
ah.

4:14 PM
No idea about colour depth here. A nice Dell with a good screen and a screen IIyama TN screen.
Bob. seeing the difference is easy if you fill the screen it a single colour
E.g. use paint and fill a square, or set a single colour background (no picture)
then turn the screen slightly or move a bit to the side (e.g. because it is a secondary monitor and it is to the side of your main monitor).
Now you should be able to see a slight colour difference between one corner of the screen and the opposite corner

Light! \o/

:-)

Color \o/ :D

Bob
@Hennes ah, my screen is positioned such that there's a wall on either side
old (early 90's?) computer desk :P

Then TN should work fine

Bob
4:21 PM
it's also the reason I can't use a screen bigger than 24" (barely fits), or multiple monitors
I should get a new desk :P

TN (twisted nematic) is ok is you are in front of it. The viewing angle is not all that great so if you move to the side then your view distorts. Ditto if you move up and down (and it happens sooner on those angles)
PVA and IPS do not suffer from that problem. You an almost look sideways at them.
Usually it comes down to, buy cheap TN, unless
1) you need true colours (TN colours are bad)
2) you get it as a second display and rotate it to potrait mode.
I know quite a few people who do that. Second screen to the right of the main screen, rotate, display a long excel sheet. (with time schedules on them).

Bob
thing is, I couldn't visually tell any difference last time I looked at one
ah well.

Did you rotate it 90 degrees at that time?

Bob
talking about colours, not viewing angle
viewing angle.. I don't mind the limitations of TN there

Well, the SU post is about colours.
I wonders wht TV screens with well with TN. Maybe due to the distance so everybody views more or less from the front.

Bob
4:29 PM

A: Password protect any folder without any third party software?

Farish FathuhullaCreate a folder, name it, then open it. Create a new text document, name it, then type the following or copy and paste it: cls @ECHO OFF title Folder Private if EXIST "HTG Locker" goto UNLOCK if NOT EXIST Private goto MDLOCKER :CONFIRM echo Are you sure you want to lock the folder(Y/...

yay. plaintext passwords, 'protection' by hiding it as hidden/system.. the whole shebang

And assuming that his IT newphew did not configure the computer to show all files

Bob
security through obscurity, too
a glimpse at the script and you know exactly how to bypass it
might as well give the folder an innocuous name..
no_secret_files_here
or maybe do_not_open

mv locker goat_p0rn -> nobody wants to open that folder
I call it "secury through YUK!"

Bob
lol
morbid curiosity?

4:50 PM
@Hennes I'd click that folder like there was no tomorrow :D

Hi. @Bob I just deleted the failed folder with Linux. To try again without the infinite loop, I do robocopy /e /copyall /ls from the SYSTEM user?
Should I just post a question on the main site?

5:10 PM
OK, another try "iso9001 audit records" -> should bore anyone to death

You're not addressing me right?

If, you you still use windows NT, a folder named ...
cd .. used to go up one level
cd .... used to go up two levels
cd... is a random one or two level up.
Even if you tested it several times on the same folder

Random? Sounds strange. xD

It does. But I actually tested it while we still ran NT 4
try it 10 times. got 6 times one folder, 4 times two folders.
(I returned to the same start folder each time)

I built a new desktop pc - i770k processor, H61M motherboard, 16GB evm RAM, and a Acer LCD monitor. The problem I am having is the screen starts to flicker after a few minutes of usage. Sometimes the flicker stops by itself and restarts after two minutes. The flicker looks like the one this person is having. youtu.be/G-pzmubFYB4 What might be the cause for this? I am using a old monitor which I used with my previous desktop.
I bought a new power cable for cheap , as I had lost the power cable for my monitor. Can the power cable be the problem?

5:14 PM
@srikanth Out of guessing, refresh rate, bad cable, bad connector(s) or display drivers needing to be updated.
It's a possibility, but if a screen loses power, even for a while, I think it should go black instead of doing that. If it's a cable issue, it sounds more likely that it's the data that isn't being transferred properly.

I do not have internet connection from my desktop, nor do I have a DVD writer for my desktop for inserting the CD that came with my monitor. However I will try to transfer and install the driver somehow. I will also try another VGA connector.
But can the power cable be the problem?

It is very unlikely to be a power cable problem

It can, but I don't think it's the number one culprit

But feel free to test if it is properly connected.

See, listen to the expert.

5:17 PM
And if you have a second computer, try the monitor on that to discover if the source is in the new desktop or in the monitor and its cables

What is refresh rate and how to change it in Windows 7?

(or the reverse with a second monitor)

And what you'd need if it's a driver issue is not the screen's CD (plug-and-play screens don't need an installation CD since uhm... windows 98?), but the nVIDIA/ATI installer.

@Hennes Excellent idea. Can I use it with a laptop?

Normally you can, if your laptop has the appropriate port.

5:18 PM
Why not? As long as the laptop has a graphics out plug which also fits in your monitor

@Ariane Oops just found out, my laptop only has HDMI :(

and the monitor?

@Ariane You mean drivers may not be the problem?
@Hennes monitor has only VGA

I think ariane means a monitor has not needed a driver for ages

it is a Acer LCD monitor

5:19 PM
The graphics card needs drivers. The monitor does not

@srikanth I mean IF it's a driver problem, it's not the screen CD you need, it's a graphics card one.

@Ariane I don't have a graphics card in my motherboard. I thought I won't need it and wanted to save a few bucks.

Is it a very old monitor (since it still has VGA ) ?

You do. It's integrated, but it's there.

About four years old

5:20 PM
If you didn't have a graphics card, your screen would display nothing. :p

@srikanthchandrasekaran Oh, you have a grahics card or chip somewhere. Else you would not have anything to display

We're saying the same stuff twice. I'll leave it to @Hennes and go work on my own issue. :p

Could be build into your chipset or the CPU. (not sure which one you got, you dropped a number.)
Nah, I just go out and shop for food
But it is nice to see we think the same

I mean I am not using a dedicated graphics card

Even if it's not a dedicated one, the driver can be wrong.

5:22 PM
As to refresh rates: on win7: right click on the desktop, select screeen resolution, advanced settingd and then the tab 'monitor'
Now really AFK for 30 minutes

I have a Gigabyte H61M motherboard and Intel core i7 3770k processor

Uhm
You need to be more precise
H61M seems to be a "family" of motherboards, and there seems to be several models in it
By the way, what is this computer for? I'm surprised that you have such a high-class processor but not even a graphics card.
Anyway, check the connection. Make sure it's screwed in properly.

@Ariane I am looking for the exact model number

should be written on your invoice, instruction manual and product box

@Ariane The one and only reason for a such a high performance machine is for running GNS3 , a network simulator software (It demands a crazy high amount of performance) I don't use it for gaming
@Ariane I did check it
@Ariane It is a Gigabyte H61M-D2H motherboard

5:37 PM
Goodie
The socket on it is LGA 1175 right?

I don't understand what you are asking?

The socket is the slot on which you put the CPU. Only certain CPUs can be placed on certain sockets. I looked your CPU up and its socket is LGA 1175. But strangely, the Gigabyte website does not list such a socket.

oh
Oh my god! I got ripped off?

No
It means I'm not looking for the right number.

OK. There is a tiny writing on the motherboard cardboard package which says LGA1155

5:41 PM
All right
Lemme search harder
Ah, I'm blind. Found it. xD

What did you find?

The socket.

@Hennes Interresting, every time I dd to the barracuda, it's always 1 record short

@srikanth Can you find this information, the chipset? I think it refers to which integrated graphics chip you have.

@Hennes none the less the drive works perfectly well but still makes we wonder what's not being transferred

5:48 PM
Never mind @srik I found it. Now I need to know, does your motherboard have USB 3 ?

yes 2 of them

All rightie.
The chipset and VGA sections might be what you need.

Oh. So I need to download these drivers and install them in my comp?

IF it's a driver issue, that is.

Also I just noticed that this motherboard "supports Intel 2nd Generation" processor. I have a Intel "3rd generation" processor. Will I face any issues because of that? (not specific to monitor problem)
@Ariane Ok. will try it

5:53 PM
I think you answered your own question

Probably not. If your processor wasn't supported, I don't think your PC would run at all. The only thing I'd see if you do encounter issues would be that your 3rd generation processor would perform like a 2nd
@user Doubt it. Display issue and processor incompatibility seem pretty far-fetched to me.

@Ariane No . I did not ask just about display issues when asking about processor compatibility

Ah
I read too quick.

Thank you sri
It's hard to reply qquickly when your hands are on 3 keyboards
quickly*

no probs
Ok. Will install all drivers and see. In fact, since I switched on my pc first time three days ago, I have not installed a single driver

5:59 PM
Heh.
But to be honest, that flickering sounds more like a connection than a driver issue to me.
Really, check your cable and try another cable if you can

@Ariane Do you mean the VGA cable or the power cable?

VGA

well, might be power cable, but I doubt it. I think the VGA cable is the most likely culprit.

ok thanks for all the info. will try all the recommendations.
I really need to get going now. It is almost midnight here

6:03 PM
Kay. G'night!

6:48 PM
midnight there, just past lunch here

Mac fans are hard to miss since they whine loudly if put to work. #heh!

@Hennes well good news even if the emlpoyee at work doesn't have a spare 250watt psu, the local futreshuop
futureshop*
will order one in for free shipping and only 40 bucks for it

;-)

@Hennes who was it that mentioned the usb grounding may be the issue earlier, as I'd like to get his thoughts as well I had to make myself some lunch before he finished
although he brings up a good point, I feel as if it was a grounding issue, it would crash when 3-4+ usb devices are plugged in, it would if any were

Congratulations!

This was only a test, designed to make sure you were paying attention. You passed. Downvoting, editing, flagging as "very low quality", or voting to close are all appropriate actions in this case.
I feel like I'm on probation when I get them.

@Nifle Well, ever since the new review system started, people have been abusing it, just clicking their way through the queues without paying attention.
Not all people, of course, but some were doing this just to get the badges.
So, the only way to stop them from doing that is to put in these audits. Unless you want to introduce reviews for reviews.

9:51 PM
@PeterI You do not have to reboot. You just have to start a new shell. (e.g. log out and log back in)

Q: TEW-671BR router software customization fails
