8:09 PM
Humm, I guess I could also just use html:hover

8:30 PM
hello, my arch just broke on me, several programs gives an error like this:
powertop:error while loading shared libraries:libnl-genl-3.so.201: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory

just different program names and libraries
running ldconfig didn't help
any ideas on what to do?

@Gunnish What did you do that caused it?

I'm not sure, thats the part of the problem, otherwise i would just try to uninstall what i might have installed
and i dont know a command showing latest installed programs/updates

@Gunnish Maybe it wasn't an installation that caused it
Well, anyway, either the libraries are actually missing, or they can't be found

might not have been, at least its the same kind of error for seveal programs and fsck says everything is fine

But I'm not sure how libraries are searched
Does find /|grep libnl-genl-3.so find the file?
What did ldconfig print, btw?

8:37 PM
ldconfig, nothing
but with -v it sure did as supposed to aif you meant that
it mentions libnl-genl-3.so.200 ->libnl-genl-3.so.200.9.0
and yes the find command gives me the location of where it probably is located

@OliverSalzburg whoa, that's hilarious... whenever my mouse is in the content pane it's inverted, and when i move my mouse out, it's regular....

@allquixotic never get a vserver from Hetzner >:(

@OliverSalzburg oh no, those are terrible! way overloaded CPU always

@allquixotic Yeah, and that causes my OS to remount / as read-only "occassionally"
Meaning, max 1 week of runtime

cool story :(

8:52 PM
I was debugging slow git the whole day, turns out, it was trying to pack and pack and pack and pack... to a read-only fs :(
The real question is obviously, why am I hosting git repos on this server :P
@Gunnish Sadly, I don't know enough about the topic to properly help you. Maybe post a question on the site?

@OliverSalzburg yeah. seriously. dediservers are unreliable for many reasons (even VPS) but not the least of which because you could stop paying for it and then all your data is gone
store it on a github premium account if it's closed source; if it's open source, store it on github for free

@allquixotic I have a virtual server with another provider that works flawlessly
So I really don't see why it's such a problem for Hetzner

virtual servers, dedicated servers, even extremely redundant well-managed ones are more likely to lose your data, and code is super valuable data, so you probably want that on a professionally managed dedicated repo like github

@allquixotic I'm trying to get my boss to get an organization account

but as to the CPU issue, it's probably because they oversell hetzner virtual servers
they slightly oversell their bandwidth too but it's not as big of a problem
because not all servers are pushing 100 Mbit/s 24/7
most people are more likely to need max CPU and max RAM or max disk I/O than max network bandwidth

9:00 PM
this thing helped me openguru.com/2009/04/… and i checked, my ld.co.conf.d/lib32-glibc.conf its basically empty

Seriously... I just rebooted the server, it's read-only again

Help :(

9:28 PM
Did anybody else get logged out of stack exchange, I went to make supper, came back I was logged out

@user88311 yeah it's having issues

It was announced though.
@StackStatus
Status updates for the Stack Exchange network, including http://stackoverflow.com. You can also find more detailed updates on http://stackstatus.net.
29 tweets, 206 followers, following 1 users

Yeah I just got a notification about it

Whee, twitter also works full sized.
So I can create an extra twiiter account, twit, drag it here and delete is from twitter.
Much better than all the small pictures I get when uploading

10:06 PM
.

...told somebody today I was going to move a calendar to Google Apps since there were access problems in Notes anyway. She said she wasn't going to use an "Internet thing". What do I even do with that?

10:18 PM
Declare them brain dead and get a DNR order

I suppose I could hack together some crapy VB program and use the Google Calendar API :P They'd probably like that...

10:43 PM
so... I've got a PC at work that won't reach a certain website, no matter the user account logged in. BUT, the same website is also reachable on other computers in the same domain/network
thoughts?

DNS. Always DNS.
I dunno. What's nslookup return?
Is it http or https?
And are there any god-forsaken toolbars installed?

Not sure, how do I do an nslookup?
`nslookup website.com?'

Yup.

@Tanner happens in different user accounts, different browsers.

you can also specify the server after the website nslookup google.com 8.8.8.8

10:45 PM
@Tanner doesn't give any http/httpS in any of the results
@Tanner wow, now it is back

I meant the site. Sometimes if a toolbar is doing something nasty https will break.

it is our mail system here. under heavy securities and such.
Thanks @Tanner - now gonna hop off

ahh

meh, minor CS question - If I have 16B of memory, and need to find out the number of bits needed in an address, is the correct formula (16*1024(MB)*1024(KB)*1024(B)), then take the log base 2 of that number, which is 34... so 34 bits / address?

What is 2^34 ?
(it is 16*1024*1024*1024, so yes. Correct).

17179869184
Bah =p I just wasn't sure if I had the formula correct for address length

1 bit -> 1 byte address space
2 bits -> 2^1 (2)
...
16 bits -> 2^16 65536
...
34 bits -> 2^34 address (aka 16GB)
You had. Doing the formula in reverse is just a nice way to check
Also, very easy to remember: 32 bit allows up to 4GB The well known 4GB limit for 32bit OS/CPU's
16GB is four times as much, so 2 more bits are needed

Bah that's an easy way to remember it, thanks =p

Aye. Not a very scientific way, but easy to remember and quick to use in praxis.

11:12 PM
Have a list of stuff I need to look up for my computer including RAM speed, size of MAR, MDR, IO buffer on HDD, etc..

Size of what? MAR MDR ?
RAM speed is easy. Check the notes from when you bought it.

memory address and data register

Or check from BIOS, or use something like CPU-Z to see the actually used timings (windows. No idea where to see those in any other OS)

I was looking at Speccy =p

Is still have no idra what is meant with memory address and data register. The program counter? How wide it is? How many registers the CPU has?

11:17 PM
No.. ugh, I suck at this part... (I believe) when the program counter is incremented, the MAR is pointed at the next location, and the contents of that location are loaded into the MDR to be sent to the register to be acted upon
RAM speed I guess is supposed to be 1600MHz.
Heh, my RAM has 11-11-11-28 timing =/

Ah.
I am used to program counter as the location to read an instruction, decode it, act on it and change the PC to the next place (or somewhere else in case of a jump)
I guess it is just a question of which label you give it
1600MHz RAM works at 800MHz. Always fun
As in DDRx at 1600MHZ is data signaled at both flanks the the 800MHz clock.
Hence the Double Data Rate.

Ye, read that, but the DDR (dual something something) =p
Yeah! lol

11:32 PM
That was always a guess, which speed does the teacher want. The real one, or the marketing one.
I swear figuring out what to answer is a lot harder than getting the actual answers
Anyway.
off to sleep
waves

Night, thanks for your help

Bob
hi
test
ok, it seems to work

11:48 PM
see ya in the morning hen
I'll be here for the next 3 hours still while I shop around for the right power supply
