If the copy protection is used (after all, that is the reason why people ---use--- sell HDMI and not DVI) then a connection is established between two HDMI devices. Most hardware is stripped down and only allows one device to be used. If you switch to a new device then there is a short pause while a new connection is build. If you used more hardware (read: more expensive) then you could avoid that, allowing faster switching between input channels
Ah, look here: "It seems that the HDCP protocol is very sensitive to small deviations and will fail safe (for hollywood) by refusing to authenticate the signal if there is any doubt..." - that is what my underlying problem is with the switch that I have. That's why my AV guy says I need a different one.

@Hennes I don't care about protection - but I do notice that the switch re-handshakes whenever it detects something faint - like the changing of screen resolution.
@Hennes - yes, like, even if you are watching the computer screen outputted to the projector, it switches midstride when it finds something else. The system is a little strange, you see: there is the Control4 box in the computer closet that is hooked directly to an external DVD player. Then, through the walls is an ethernet cord that connects to a balif to bring the HDMI to the conference table. There you can plugin in your laptop if you like
Or, if I add the HDMI switch, you can switch between devices plugged into the balin.
Yeah, Ugh. I wasn't involved in the setup, and wouldn't have went the way of Control4 if I knew any better or had any say.

I see this, too: "Please note a that a lot of cheap HDMI switch are simply signal switches, either mechanical or electronical. They don't re-generate, nor perform, HDCP handshakes. Switches that do such thing usually costs $100 to $200."
