12:46 AM
Can't get XP image to boot. Safe mood reboots on agp440.sys. :| So pissed that I'm going to have to do yet another XP SP2 install...
Tried switching hal.dll, a couple times, not sure that's even the problem...

That's longer than the video I want to watch O__O

wth? lol

Wow.

3 hours later…
3:46 AM
@studiohack I noticed you proposed a Homeschooling in Area 51. Curious what made you decide to do that. :)

4:25 AM
@tanner the agp440 error is super well documented
Its iirc an error with the next file it loads
Or was that mup.sys

1 hour later…
5:37 AM
@Tanner what do you mean? If you're asking my motive, I saw that there wasn't a proposal for Homeschooling - I was homeschooled so I have a personal interest... I also started a Sign Language proposal as well. Both proposals are going well!
@Tanner were you homeschooled?

/me was for a year or two, unofficially ;p

6:30 AM
That was fun, the c key got stuck, and it wasn't the key itself... was my keyboard going nuts. Unplugging and plugging it in worked. It was the c-c-c-c-c-combo breaker I guess

6:53 AM
On my mobile again. Wish there was a way to reply to posts in mobile chat...
Or that enter would send a message, not create ä new line lol

I posted something on that on MSO

Q: Could we have enter submit a line in chat, rather than start a new line?

Journeyman GeekI've got SE chat set up in a docked window in mobile mode in windows 8, and use it fairly regularly on an android phone. In both cases, hitting the enter key starts a new line. It would make sense to have it submit the line (so you didn't have to hide your on screen keyboard every line), and have...

1 hour later…
Bob
8:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek hm... userscript? :P

8:38 AM
@Bob: would need to work across a rather odd array of devices
its a stupid design choice IMO
in my case either browser on my android phone, and the embedded IE 10 browser google search app uses

Bob
hm
I wonder if it would be possible to shove chat into an iframe
hm. worth a shot.

The mobile chat also handles very low resolutions gracefully

Bob
9:38 AM
hi
yay
just run this js at some point:
$("#input").keyup(function(e) {
    if (e.keyCode == 13 /* == enter */) {
        $("#sayit-button").click();
    }
});
and enter works :P

Bob
9:49 AM
eh. (i)frame security restrictions are too much (for good reason, though) that I can't really run that JS with chat.se embedded
test
ok, it works in Chrome if you just run the JS in the address bar
javascript:(function(){$("#input").keyup(function(e){if(e.keyCode==13){$("#sayit-button").click();}});})();
FF doesn't allow address bar JS anymore, but it works there as a bookmarklet :P
@JourneymanGeek can you enter URIs in that browser you use?

Bob
damn.
bookmarks?
any way to sneak a URI in? :P

the google app, neither
unless it could be linked somewhere I could find it
like here

Bob
it has to be run on the page, unfortunately
and [links won't work wi
th non-http protocols](javascript:(function(){$("#input").keyup(function(e){if(e.keyCode==13){$("#sayit-button").click();}});})();)

did I say really ugly hack?

Bob
9:55 AM
:P
test
ok, works on IE8 as well

the problem with the google search app is... its not a browser ;p

Bob
yea.. I'm trying an ugly hack with frames but it's not working too well :P
I could try a server-side proxy. That would probably work.
But the bandwidth requirements would be.. painful, if it got any real use :P
thing is, XSS is usually evil.
and it's what I need to be able to do this :P

10:24 AM
orrrr
they could just fix it ><

Bob
10:53 AM
lol

> To provide a leading browser on Android and iOS, this year Opera will make a gradual transition to the WebKit engine, as well as Chromium, for most of its upcoming versions of browsers for smartphones and computers.

1 hour later…
1:22 PM
Any of you guys on Office 365?

Nope. Office 3.3
Journey: Why use an on-screen keyboard?
No physical keyboard in the phone?

I hate on screen key boards
so damn horrible, so damn slow

Aye
I have (well, had. Phone is broken) a phone with an OSK
I can either see where I am typing, or 3 lines and the keyboard.
Not useful
Either get a physical keyboard with the phone (buildin, bluetooth, whatever) or a high res screen

1:50 PM
Well guess I'll just go buy one of the 700 watt psu's today since apparently nobody has a 250
and havent got to my home town because been so damn busy

OK.
Two things:
1) read reviews on whatever PSU you buy. Some are a lot louder than others.
2) If you want to reuse the PSU ina future PC (usually if you build them yourself), try to get a good one..

3. I already know that

Aye. I know I said it before.

hey folks

Mind you to be honest, I don't care for the volume of the fan, most of the time I'm playing music to drown out the crap in this town, either it's a siren, some idiot who thinks it's a race circuit or some kid that doesn't shut up, but my power supply I currently have, well in this case I guess we can say had was quiet enough that I could turn it on and the processor fan was louder

2:01 PM
@user88311: why a 700 w one? you could get a decent 500+ watt PSU that should serve well unless you went dual video card

any suggestions on how to move a file from a server which has ftp, but no ssh access to another which has ssh, but no ftp access?

Nobody around here has lower than 700 is the issue

@Sathya: ftp FROM the ftp-accessless server to the other one? ;p

oh, that

@user88311: in which case spend a little extra and get a more efficient PSU if you can

2:02 PM
:P
see, I knew I forgot something :p

but its rediculous not to have smaller PSUs
@Sathya: quack

I've got 150 I'm willing to put into a psu and still no luck

@user88311: what country are you in?

Canada but I'm current;y in one of it's few backwood country towns right now
and they have shit all for PSU's

ahh
might be worth ordering one online?

2:04 PM
Looking around as we speak
I'd rather deliver a decent one to my door then buy a shitty one in store, thing is, I've been find very few decent atx 250's
well I'm jumping in the shower if gotta go into town might want to do that now

Hi users... I have a doubt
As I can ask anything in *chat*, I'll ask right away...
How could I protect my external HDD?

protect in what sense
enviroment damaage or data loss

Err... Sorry..
I didn't complete it yet :P
By protect, I meant that it shouldn't be formatted or modified by other PCs..

In praxis: You do not.

Ask hen I'm about to jump in the shower

2:08 PM
A external drive is made to read from and to.
And all the normal ones are fully R/W, so if the computer want to write to it it can do so.

Is there some other way, (modifying the autorun.inf file - or something like that)

autorun.inf does not get used anymore (Thank God)
Autorun is Virus heaven

@CrazyBuddy: well, in theory you could fit a hardware write blocker into it...

Even MS came around and fixed that in an update
Aye. Hence my "the normal ones"
What is your goal, non writable access or speficifally non writable HDD ?
Else consider some of the few pendrives with a HW write protect switch
Or ancient CD-R's

CD-Rs/DVD-Rs are the sensible solution here IMO

2:10 PM
Wait, I'll explain it in detail..
Only if you guys allow me to type :D
I have a 500 GB HDD (no need specs, I think)
My PC has some sort of virus I think so..
Whenever I insert an USB, all folders get modified into shortcuts...
Opening the shortcuts, runs a program and opens the folder simultaneously..

Fun :D

A: How do I get rid of malicious spyware, malware, viruses or rootkits from my PC?

MoabFollow the order given below to disinfect your PC On a PC that is not infected, make a boot AV disc then boot from the disc on the Infected PC and scan the hard drive, remove any infections it finds. I prefer the Windows Defender Offline boot CD/USB because it can remove boot sector viruses, se...

We can access the folders through the address bar or some Root browser (like WinRAAR)

In short: the answer is "fix the PC". Not "work around one part of the problem"

But, when we have a look at the folder properties, it is in the hidden attribute..
And, it is checked and disabled...
@Hennes Please wait...
I can override the attributes using cmd...
And, all the folders get displayed...
Well, a folder named RECYCLER (system folder I think so) has the virus..
Even a layman can identify it..
The icon makes me 99% suspicious that it is a virus...

2:15 PM
@CrazyBuddy "Some people" put files on their external drives that fill the empty space completely. The idea is that that stops malware from writing additional data onto your drive. Success varies

Now, without unlocking the autorun.inf, I can't format the drive...
It says: some files is used by a program- some sort like that..
I can still unlock the file or just kill the explorer to format it..
Is there some way like that?
My friends don't know these stuff...

There are unlocker utilities

They do know How to format the drive...
And, this is the only way they Knew..

@Hennes Well, Mine is a dial-up, it shows nothing..!

2:19 PM
Which, if it is the same thing, would give you two recycle bins. One real, one named similar with the virus in it

I think I confused you all by mentioning that...
I don't wanna get rid of the virus..
In some way, it protects my HDD from formatting..
But, this happens only to my PC... Other PCs don't worry about it..

If it was my computer I would solve it as follows:
1) On a clean computer boot a non-microsoft OS (so safe from any ms virus)
2) Insert the USB drive and mount it
3) delete all autorun.inf files with `find /mnt/drive -name autorun.inf -delete`

@Hennes Like I've said, you got me all wrong..
I know how to delete it...
Okay, leave that part. My thought is something like this..
To say shortly, once the HDD is plugged, a file should run on the background, (but the OP shouldn't know that file), so that when he tries to format it, it doesn't...

I think I assumed you had your friends HDD and that you were trying to fix it.
Not that you needed a way to explain it to your friends.
On a properly patched system with default settings no file will run in the background.

Sorry for my English...
Okay, so we can't do that... Just thought of protecting a rem. drive...
Okay, Thanks Hennes and all (I was wondering how all guys got disappeared by seeing my English)

2:25 PM
Not if their system is properly patched.

Q: See available drives from Windows CLI?

Cristi DiaconescuIs there a way to list the available drives from cmd.exe ? (Other than manually typying c: d: ... and seeing which ones return errors)

How does this only have 1 upvote?!
Now it has 2 ;P

@OliverSalzburg now 4 :P

I was just staring into my Windows console trying to find the equivalent of ls /
Then I realized, I don't know it :P

Applescript... on or off topic?

@KronoS Very on-topic, I'd say

that's what I thought
just wanted another opinion
it was in regards to this:

2:58 PM
@studiohack I was actually. From 1st grade to 10th.

Q: Trying to re-direct emails as plain text using Applescript. Code (inside) isn't working, any help would be great

user197937I have users sending mail through Outlook which formats the text as Rich text. I'm trying to create script where a "catch-all" email address intercepts the email, converts it to plain text then send it to the user. I've got the Re-Direct working with some searching around, however the message bod...

@Tanner What was that a reply to? :D

@Bob bahaha great... I hadn't actually seen that before O_O

@OliverSalzburg lol edited in reply

@Tanner sup Tanner. I just learned I get Monday off. President's Day.

3:02 PM
Ah, now it becomes much clearer :D

Isn't it great being on the govt payroll O_O
listening to that on Audible

@allquixotic Ohhh you lucky bastard.
I'm so screwed today ^_^
Needed to have a computer to somebody by 11 today (it's 7 here for all you non-PST people :P) and the freaking Dell install disc got stuck last night.
Would you believe it's nearly impossible to produce a fully patched XP system in four hours from an SP2 install? =D

lol
@Tanner: I'd hit it with wsus offline update... ;p

Ohhhh thanks I had forgotten about that

3:11 PM
There might be hope xD

actually I'd have dusted off a copy of nlite and slipstreamed SP3 into the disk too

Ooooorrrr it could power off in the middle of install. That could happen too.
Well I was working on a WDS server but apparently I fubared my XP image.

oh, I turn on automatic reboot and recall just for that

@allquixotic hahaha, fed or state?
@Tanner neat!

my hypothetical offspring might be. especially if they're dyslexic like I am

3:21 PM
@JourneymanGeek go for it.
asked a question in Android chat.

of course, this is hypothetical
maybe my kids will be academically brilliant perfectionists like my dad ;p

haha

@studiohack Federal

Any of you Android guys know?

Q: How to hyperlink to file in KingsoftOffice?

studiohackI have an Excel spreadsheet created in Windows and open in Kingsoft Office. I would like to be able to create a hyperlink to specific files on the tablet itself. @allquixotic benefits of being a mod :P

hey, my organizational structure is public information, not even FOIA it's literally public

@allquixotic I'm here! my govt computer doesn't have my alerts set up.

I'm somewhere in there. II. E. to be exact

@tanner If your update includes the .net parts then yeah, I easily believe it. Those alone seem to need 2-4 hours

3:43 PM
@allquixotic I work with FOIA-exempt info :P

@studiohack nice, I don't
nothing I work on has any sort of classification: not secret, not confidential, not FOUO
and I never, ever see real live production data (PII) either
it's kept tightly locked up away from me, and I'm glad for that

19 messages moved to Recycle Bin black hole.

@studiohack Recycle Bin? O_O

haha
@allquixotic That sounds like a scary place.

lol, that's a good thing.

3:45 PM
I just requested access to the recycle bin. I don't wanna end up like Luke, Han and Leia, though.

@allquixotic you're certainly fluent in gov't speak. :P
@allquixotic Access Denied. :P it's SU's chat black hole where I move stuff so it's deleted twice and gone.

@studiohack what did you move? all my talk about what i work in is still there on my screen

If he told you he'd have to kill you move you to the recycle bin.

@allquixotic refresh? or I can delete moar.
@Tanner HA. good one!

@studiohack nah dont worry about it
@studiohack anyway I test web applications :P almost all customer facing stuff we do anymore is all on the web, for convenience, cross platform, device independence, etc
I test just about every aspect of them, depending on assignments and priorities and such. functionality, security, whatever needs doing
my least favorite ones are like "verify that the label text of the button with <requirement id> says 'Next'"

3:54 PM
Oh FML that PC is toast. Keeps shutting off half way through an install and flashes an amber light. Thought it was the HDD maybe so I swapped it. Same thing. -_- Now I'm down to 3 hours.
Why do we even maintain these stupid things? They're like 6 years old...

@Tanner sucks, but maybe overheating?

That would make sense.
I'm not gonna fight with that one anymore. I'll just grab another from the graveyard...

@allquixotic ahh, nice. Now I have a direct person to complain to about the horrible websites. :P just kidding, but a lot of the government websites, especially the IRS, have so many broken links and stuff.

haha

4:23 PM
@studiohack broken links would be a failure of my someone in my shoes, yes
not for the IRS - I'm not responsible for them :P

oh sweetnes
Found a exact psu I need free shipping just went up on ebay
Well time to grab some lunch and go buy groceries

4:49 PM
yay

@Sathya what q?
oh; is that a new feature?
the 1 flag thing?

Nice. Mods only or...?

@Tanner just another reason to get to trusted user ;)

lol yeah I need to
16% there :P
32% to the mod tools...

i'm a bit closer

5:07 PM

@Tanner only mods // @all lists count of flags, click &You get a listing of all flags

5:27 PM

Little yellow flag ftw ;P

@OliverSalzburg woah - userscript?

I didn't even notice the addition because I use yet another userstyle that right-aligns all SE sites :P So the box was outside of the visible area

BGM
Hi fellows!

@BGM Greetings

BGM
I asked what I thought was a very specific question: superuser.com/questions/550204/… and one of the other users seems to have a problem with the question. You can follow the issue in his responses. Am I wrong to ask questions in this way?

5:38 PM
@BGM Your AV guy sounds like he has a legit concern
I'm not familiar enough with the topic though

BGM
I think he does, too, but I don't know enough, either, and am getting stuck trying to find out.

On the other hand...
@BGM One thing's for sure, you can't discuss a better answer out of someone ;)

BGM
@OliverSalzburg Yeah, I know. I was just trying to get him to see that I did ask a real question. I don't know why folks have to make it so hard sometimes.

@BGM People are proud of their contribution and they feel insulted if you tell them that they didn't understand you properly ;)
Regardless of it being the case or not

BGM
I was afraid he would close my qustion.

5:42 PM
I'm pretty sure you can get a good idea about the problem from reading those reviews

BGM
Yes, I have about a dozen Amazon tabs open right now; I think that is one of them.
I always read the reviews.
The one I actually bought had 4.5 stars and good reviews.
But my AV fellow says it only has one hcpd license, but should have one for each port.

Yaaaay got approval to move Winchester to 4G and use USB dongles instead of laptop cards ^_^
At least one thing went right today.

I think I know what the AV guy meant.

> Extron HDMI matrix switchers also feature Key Minder®, an Extron-exclusive technology that continuously verifies HDCP compliance for quick, reliable switching.
I've only used an Extron HDMI switcher once. That worked flawlessly

BGM
Ah, I think you are on to something "... that continuously verifies HDCP compliance..."

BGM
But a "matrix" is a term, if I'm not mistaken, for being able to change channel direction over any combination of ports.

Also sounds interesting

If the copy protection is used (after all, that is the reason why people ---use--- sell HDMI and not DVI) then a connection is established between two HDMI devices.
Most hardware is stripped down and only allows one device to be used.
If you switch to a new device then there is a short pause while a new connection is build.
If you used more hardware (read: more expensive) then you could avoid that, allowing faster switching between input channels

Early 'almost instant' handshakes took 5 seconds

5:47 PM
@Hennes Yay for markdown.

BGM
Ah, look here: "It seems that the HDCP protocol is very sensitive to small deviations and will fail safe (for hollywood) by refusing to authenticate the signal if there is any doubt..." - that is what my underlying problem is with the switch that I have. That's why my AV guy says I need a different one.

But that proplem only occurs if you need the protection.

BGM
Ha ha, @OliverSalzburg - I was just looking at that same page yesterday! octavainc.com/HDMI switch Insiders Guide.htm I wrote them an email but they never responded.

All HDMI devices need to be licenced though. You get a licence by paying a lot of cash.

BGM
@Hennes I don't care about protection - but I do notice that the switch re-handshakes whenever it detects something faint - like the changing of screen resolution.

5:50 PM
I am not sure if there is anything involved beyond that

Aye
So it costs you time if you do anything 'funny'.
If you do not often change input that it is just a minor delay.
If you do switch back and forth a lot, or change resolution once per minute then it is a different case.

BGM
@Hennes - yes, like, even if you are watching the computer screen outputted to the projector, it switches midstride when it finds something else. The system is a little strange, you see: there is the Control4 box in the computer closet that is hooked directly to an external DVD player. Then, through the walls is an ethernet cord that connects to a balif to bring the HDMI to the conference table. There you can plugin in your laptop if you like
Or, if I add the HDMI switch, you can switch between devices plugged into the balin.

Ugh.
One more reason for me not to touch HDMI and use something not Hollywood designed (which is sadly not helping you)

BGM
Yeah, Ugh. I wasn't involved in the setup, and wouldn't have went the way of Control4 if I knew any better or had any say.
Hey, any of y'all care to answer my SuperUser Question with the info we just came up with? superuser.com/questions/550204/… Then I could mark it solved.
From the link given by @allquixotic hdcabling.co.za/… - I see "There are often handshake issues simply due to a poor connection." That might be a problem, actually, in the balin.
I see this, too: "Please note a that a lot of cheap HDMI switch are simply signal switches, either mechanical or electronical. They don't re-generate, nor perform, HDCP handshakes. Switches that do such thing usually costs $100 to $200."
@hennes, are you interested in putting an answer on my question? If not, then I'll do it.

6:05 PM
Go ahead. I am not comfortable enough with all the details to write one

BGM
Okay. Thanks for being around for the discussion.

6:34 PM
should have known to good to be true
asked seller to send me a pic of the spec sticker on the psu, completely different psu
then one advertised

Heh
Looks spectacular! :D

6:58 PM
@OliverSalzburg nice!

I love it when somebody has 40 bucks for a item then 200 for shipping

@user88311 Report them, they're trying to avoid fees

I.O.W. rip people off

Well, if it's on Ebay, they have to pay like 1% of the price in fees
Which doesn't apply to shipping
So they sell for $1 and pay 1 cent in fees and then cash in

I rather just convince them to ship for 20 bucks when they're the only one I've found that provided me with proof they had the actual psu I need

7:03 PM
Then just report them after you got the PSU :D

7:42 PM
@OliverSalzburg a one-liner implementing that in the address bar would be awesome

@allquixotic javascript:$("html").css("filter","invert();"); maybe?
Assuming jQuery is loaded, I guess

@OliverSalzburg I guess it's not loaded on SE because it didn't work.

When I put javascript:{$("html").css("filter","invert()")} in my address bar, it opens Google :P

@OliverSalzburg wtf?

That happens
This works for me: javascript:$("html").css("-webkit-filter","invert()")
At least as a bookmarklet
Woah, inverted dark theme is hardcore!

7:53 PM
@OliverSalzburg it worked! my time machine really worked!
only problem about inverting the colors is that my screen stands out from a cursory glance at my screen over my shoulder
none of our apps (testing apps, web browsers, whatever) are based on a dark theme, so boss would instantly know i'm doing something else :P

We obviously need to implement a toggle!
$("body").hover(function(){$("html").css("-webkit-filter","invert()")},function(){$("html").css("-webkit-filter","")});
2
Bam!
I love body:hover! :D
