@Andy okay, pull and try again?
that was just me forgetting to update everything back to relative paths :)

Better, and yet somehow, worse:
> sqlalchemy.exc.OperationalError: (sqlite3.OperationalError) unable to open database file
that fails on the create_all

that's the error I was looking for

oh. well then. Good :)
Same result

it's trying to open C:\C:\path\to\database
I just don't know why
(apart from "because WIndows", that is)

2:05 PM
@ArtOfCode this in NG?

aye

where in the code are we, I'm happy to throw sticks at it until it works lol

look at database.DB_PATH

hey...look at these prints that could be log lines. wink wink nudge nudge

2:07 PM
@ThomasWard wrong; if anything, it's @Cerbrus' fault. We should teach proper grammar to Smokey.

@ArtOfCode if I print database.DB_PATH right before the create_all, it's showing H:\Development\SmokeDetector-ng\data\database.sqlite3, no double drives

so I guess it wants a path without the drive on the front
now, how does one do that in a cross-platform manner

@ArtOfCode the same way we made git work in the Py3 conversion?
check platform info, adapt path accordingly

that's ugly

2:11 PM
ugly but usable

if there's a better way, I'd rather do that

it's not the only code to do that
@ArtOfCode the problem for compatibility is Windows vs. not Windows
if that's the only compatibility 'if' statement we need then i'd rather do that.
@Glorfindel E: Invalid in Context.
i need sleep apparently :)
or more coffee
@ArtOfCode The problem with cross-platform compat. is that file paths are weird, especially in Windows.

@ArtOfCode Where is it setting the path?

@Andy database.DB_PATH

@ThomasWard Did you know you can have weird unicode symbols in file names in windows?

2:14 PM
pretty sure you can in unix too

@Magisch yes, you can. It requires certain changes at filesystem creation time but it can be done yes.

@ThomasWard No I mean like normally
within the UI

@Magisch yes, i know, you need the language packs for it to render right but you can. How else do you think malware tries to full AV scanners lol

@Andy in a console, can you run import pathlib, followed by pathlib.Path('H:\\Development\\SmokeDetector-ng\\data\\database.sqlite3').parts[0]‌?

>>> pathlib.Path('H:\\Development\\SmokeDetector-ng\\data\\database.sqlite3').parts[0]
'H:\\'
(Windows computers here on campus have Py3)

2:17 PM
H:\\
um...

that'll do nicely then

Slash is escaping the backtick
Ah there you go

@Magisch Clearly the folder names contain spaces at the end

@Ferrybig No actually
zero-width unicode spaces in the middle

2:19 PM
Okay, pull and retry @Andy?

Fun fact: Windows also accepts / as opposed to \ for file paths

> FileNotFoundError: [WinError 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'Development\\SmokeDetector-ng\\data'

@Andy what's the stack trace?
so this error is even more of a pain than I thought

Nope.

uhhh... good question?
my IDE can't find it

Ah.

And, no data directory is created
which is why I asked about initialize_new

Okay, that should fix it. One more pull and retry.

Can we make those optional?

it'd be kinda nice if we could
you should have direct write access to NG by the way, @Andy

3:17 PM
@ArtOfCode Because Python isn't supported on OS X workers currently. You have to install it yourself
Fixed a few typos in the readme by the way
also there was a bit of stray whitespace

silly question: What do I run to actually run NG? ws.py or daemon.py?

python3 daemon.py

I do entry for testing, daemon is the nocrash basically

Running NG on the account you made

oh
sigh right

what is the id in my_ids? Is it my (as in Andy) id? or is it the bot's id?

yeah, repro
@Andy ID of whatever account is running it
chat ID, that is

Yep. CE needs upgrading, and that should fix it. We'll need to switch to a submodule. @quartata you okay to do that? I can't right now

@quartata @ArtOfCode we should be doing CE via a submodule anyways for ease of updating :P

ease of updating is better with pip requirements, but only if the maintainer keeps the package up to date on PyPI

well wrt CE that's not the case :P
if this were imaplibext that'd be a different story :P
but its not
(I have "deploy to PyPI" as part of the CI rules for a release tag)

@ArtOfCode But why did regular Smokey not work?
Does it need updating too?

No, clearly
!!/alive

@ArtOfCode plz send teh coffee

@ThomasWard I have one of those too. Makes life much easier :)

@quartata what?
I'm out of the loop someone want to fill me in?

4:01 PM
@ThomasWard NG is failing to work on a new test account because CE is out of date

But I ran regular Smokey on the same account and it failed with the same error.
So it needs updating too (last updated 2 months ago, so the PyPI version is newer actually)

@quartata It's working. Therefore, until it stops working, it does not need updating.

But it's not working?
Try running Smokey on the NG account

I'm just pointing out that something weird is at play

@quartata that's fairly clearly an issue with the NG account, isn't it?

Especially since the PyPI version is newer

If it works on other accounts but not that one, surely that account is the problem, not the bot

@ArtOfCode This, @quartata

@ArtOfCode Right. Which is why I doubt it's specifically a ChatExchange problem
Although it doesn't work on my bot account now either

there ya go, @quartata. Not broken.

Also why did you revert my README changes

did I?
Oh
I edited it on GH, I guess that overwrote it
whoops

@ArtOfCode I'm guessing accounts with logins made after xyz don't work
Since NG is new and I changed Laff's password recently

@quartata quite possibly, but there's a known solution
update CE
doesn't affect Smokey because we run on a nice old account :)

Hm
@art
I wonder

4:25 PM
Ja

Is this your hobby? Or do you have other hobbies and this is like work for you?

Well OK let's see here

totally random and out of left field, but I kinda wonder now :p

I posted an issue on CE to update PyPI

@quartata let's just switch to using a submodule. PyPI is all good, but for CE it's not going to get updated promptly enough when we need it.
@Magisch I guess technically it's a hobby, but I have so much free time that I kinda spend most of my time doing something related to Charcoal

4:29 PM
@ArtOfCode If I can get them to push to PyPI after CI we wouldn't have to worry

@quartata indeed. But they don't, so until they do, let's use a submodule.

I mean obviously we need to use a sub module now but

@quartata Just curious, why do you think PiPy is newer? I see 0.0.3 as being released on March 7, Smokey is using a version from March 8
and there are updates since then that we haven't updated to use

@Andy Oh my bad. The GH said 2 months ago so I assumed Feburary
...and of course the HTTPS patch was on that one day
Are you serious right now
Why has anything been working even

@quartata Welcome to the headaches of developing-from-scratch :)

4:35 PM
Kinda suspicious actually
Since the other bot I had was broken in a different way by HTTPS
But I haven't observed that with NG
Like if it was having problems with HTTPS
It wouldn't be able to join rooms
(But still post messages to them)

CE works with basic SE HTTPS; I fixed that two months ago. There's been some more recent change that it didn't work with, but that's also fixed in the newest version.

But if the PyPI version was March 7th it shouldn't work period
Maybe these dates are in different time zones

Entirely possible, but also irrelevant. Smokey is working as far as we need. For NG we just need to switch to a submodule.
