bringing up the FIRE pseudo-dialog exposes it of course, but that's tedious if you are scrolling back looking for stuff which might require additional blacklist entries

@ArtOfCode Note ast.literal_eval may be useful as an any type

@Andy could do with your help on NG when you get time, actually - there's an error on Windows with the database, but I can't figure it out
@quartata huh?

ast.literal_eval parses any Python literal

1:21 PM
okay? context?

@ArtOfCode Give me just a bit. I'm getting you an example for the logging issue.

yeah, no worries

So for a type signature if you wanted an "any" type you could use that
It'll take strings representing lists, dictionaries, floats, etc and return the real thing but in a safe not-eval way

@quartata I... don't think I do?

Just demonstrating that the type signature can really be any monadic function

could smokey-ng benefit from having a whole structure diagram before people start coding?
and possibly a fully written spec?

The technical answer: Yes. The realistic answer: Who wants to do that?
:)

it hasn't gone terribly so far

@CalvT Python 3. Once you've learned 3 you can learn the differences between 3 and 2

since textbooks and profs never shut up about how you shouldn't start coding something that's not fully specced

1:43 PM
Python 2 will be dead by 2020 so

Yeah, @CalvT, learn Python 3. The differences aren't that huge, to be honest, and most of it you can get just by googling for documentation when you need it

@Magisch I kind of tried to bypass needing a long structure diagram that I didn't want to do by laying out as much of the structure in stubs ahead of time

@quartata @ArtOfCode ok thanks

My biggest barrier to entry on working on smokey is that I have exactly 0 clue how to set it up as a dev environment
And even less clue on how to git properly

Read the README
You'll need Python 3.5
At any rate it's a little late for a specification since only two major components remain: metasmoke and bodyfetcher
Neither of which I have major design preferences about
Most of what needs to happen is porting over spam checks

1:48 PM
@Magisch I can walk you through git.

@ArtOfCode I may pick you up on that on a weekend when I'm home
can't do this on the company pc
they'd skin me

@CalvT Python 3. There are very few useful libraries that aren't Py3 compatible and Py2 dies in a couple years. It's already on extended life support and I think is feature frozen.

TL;DR: git clone https://github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector-ng to clone; make your changes; git add -A to add everything you've changed, git commit -m "A useful commit message" to commit, and git push origin master to publish back to the master branch on GH.
