See you later!

2:53 AM
@quartata on the step where you run secrets.py, it asks for a Store Password. Should that be left blank?

[ SmokeDetector-ng ] SmokeDetector-ng started at revision a86fe26.

\o/

i heard something about an EMP cannon, and dust cloud apocalypses. what's up now?

Nothing. Plopped Zephyr in the wrong room, otherwise, pretty uneventful here

@Andy No that's the key it uses to encrypt the store
You'll then need that when it runs to decrypt it
Good to see that it's working fine on Windows.

3:00 AM
Does that require I either pass the key (if so, how to do it in a secure manner) or manually type it every time it starts? In which case...yuck?

You have to type it in each time, but you have to do that with current Smokey too
You shouldn't be starting/stopping it that much in production ideally, and this turns multiple credentials into one basically
Currently on Heroku I'm passing it via environmental variable since it's not interactive. I might put that patch onto master (currently it patches the change in itself after pulling on deploy)

Aren't the current smokey credentials in an env variable, thus not requiring me to input that information?
Ah'

If it's not in an environmental variable it'll ask for it
I'll make that change I guess if only so that I can simplify my Procfile
Right now it's literally patching with patch so it'll break next time someone changes that file significantly

@NobodyNada OT: FireAlarm on the RPi is dead, any chance you could reboot it?

@AshishAhuja Sure

3:12 AM
thank you!

@quartata I'm going to squash those hopes and dreams: AttributeError: module 'os' has no attribute 'fork' This is a UNIX only command
Can we just use multiprocessing instead?
That seems to be the recommendation on the first few SO google search results
In news unrelated to forking:
H:\Development\SmokeDetector-ng\src>py entry.py
2017-04-26 22:17:26,594 - INFO - smokey_logs.entry - Started via 'entry.py'
2017-04-26 22:17:26,594 - DEBUG - smokey_logs.entry - Secret store not already open: started without daemon?
Store password:
2017-04-26 22:17:34,928 - DEBUG - smokey_logs.chat - Joining Sandbox (Room ID: 1)
Woo! Logs are coming together

os.fork should not be UNIX only -- last I checked it uses CreateProcess or whatever on Windows

fork

The parent process uses os.fork() to fork the Python interpreter. The child process, when it begins, is effectively identical to the parent process. All resources of the parent are inherited by the child process. Note that safely forking a multithreaded process is problematic.

Available on Unix only. The default on Unix.
That's multiprocessing fork. os.fork is here still with Availability: Unix.

Well OK... I guess I was thinking of os.waitpid
So this will be a massive pain in the ass
Because multiprocessing.spawn is totally different
I'll try to make it work, it might not be quite as bad as I thought thinking about it
In the mean time start with entry and beware that !!/pull won't work

3:30 AM
Eh, that's fine. I'm just getting logging set up

@SmokeDetector vlq but not IMHO out-and-out abusive
also, pretty old -- it came up because somebody posted another answer

I have a wall of text to post...I'm taking bets on how many times Smokey interrupts.
Who's heard of the ship of Theseus paradox? Basically - ship is launched, all planks and boards are replaced on it's journey, when it gets home is it the same ship?
The same type of thing can be done for code and someone smarter than I (especially in terms of git functionality) has a nice library to handle it: erikbern.com/2016/12/05/the-half-life-of-code.html
So...how's Smokey do on this?
at first we have this:
"WTF is that?!" you ask. Well...that is @Undo adding stuff back in 2014
So, let's try again, but ignore that particular blob of 200K+ lines of test data :)
The lines decay as they approach the right hand side of the chart. This means we are replacing/updating/removing lines of code. Is it the same code?! PARADOX!
That's pretty...but what's it telling us?
Finally...who wants to guess how long a line of code typically lasts before someone comes along and pokes it?
This fancy line is showing that within a year of being added to Smokey, there is over a 40% chance that it'll be modified. Within two years that's up to 60% and as we approach a full year three, we're approaching 80%.
But...with the rewrite to NG, that pretty much guarantees 100%, doesn't it? :)
Done!
pats Smokey on the head Good bot

@Andy any bets on how many interruptions from obnoxious room dwellers?

Ha! Nice try :)

shouldn't we have a special black hole for anything with israelbigmarket? 5 autoflags!!!11!

@tripleee Increasing autoflags can only happen after @ArtOfCode or @Undo talk with Pops

8:25 AM
@tripleee There was an elaborate Eltima spamring a year or two ago (voting ring, users also posting regular posts). Some of the non-deleted posts found in that search also look suspicious.

@Magisch yeah, but as a matter of principle

@Wrzlprmft I think the real question is, will we be able to detect if that happens again if we decide to unblacklist eltima (so that we do not have to deal with the FPs). I think yes.

tpu- by Glorfindel

@Glorfindel Not necessarily. These posts are usually not detected by other filters.

8:31 AM
That's true, but I meant we will hear of it via other means. The amount of blue ones here is not to be underestimated.

I'm fine with a few FPs but it should be easier to understand what they are
documenting trolls and kooks might be problematic but this could easily go on a wiki page in our Github project
and maybe ideally Metasmoke could link to the documentation, though I'm not entirely sure how that should work

@Glorfindel I really doubt that. The last spamring went undetected for quite a while.
@tripleee Can’t we equip special filters with some information as to why this filter exists?

@tripleee something like that would be ideal.

technically it's not very hard, comments in code or Python comment strings; in the blacklist files a little awkward, but I've done it once or twice

We also have the Thierno M. Sow case which might confuse people and require documentation.

8:36 AM
the real problem is the visibility and awareness
@Glorfindel yeah, that is an obvious parallel
but like I wrote above, singling out individuals might be less acceptable than describing more obviously organized abuse
and our friend the second ugliest font in the world would probably be delighted to get a wiki page dedicated to itself
