12:16 AM
hey there @Adeptus

12:41 AM
@nitsua60 We have been showing our post-2000 daughter various 80s movies (not much John Hughes though)
o/

My Double Feature events have featured a lot of 80s films.

hey there @Chemus

hey-o @Shalvenay What's doin?

not a whole lot, hoping to run a bit of 5e later today although it doesn't look like there are enough 5e players around for the playtest I wanted to run

I consider missing participants an opportunity:
Oct 18 '16 at 3:35, by BESW
Our Dungeon World GM had to cancel at the last minute today, so we played a game of Roll For Shoes about players whose GM was missing.

12:52 AM
@BESW xD well, I have a plan b) in mind :)

Plan honeybee?

and maybe even a plan c) that involves dusting off my old 3.5e dungeon...
hey there @Papayaman1000

Eyy, BESW! Just the person I was looking for.
hi @Shalvenay

how're things going?

Ok. Have a lot of ants. I remember BESW mentioning a good homemade solution, and was hoping to get that.

1:04 AM
Apr 24 at 8:49, by BESW
I use a mix of vinegar, dish soap, and lavender oil; put it in a spritzer and spray on the trails, let it sit a few minutes and then wipe it away.

@Miniman That's exactly it! Thank you, kind sir! Now, I swear I have some lavender oil somewhere...
Probably buried with the rest of my bath bomb stuff.

A good mix is 2 parts vinegar, 2 parts water, a generous squirt of soap, and three drops of oil.

Well, that's more or less all I was really looking for. Later, guys.

But you know, experiment. It's not rocket surgery.
And you have to repeat it a few times a day, it's not a one-and-done. But three times a day for two days is usually more than enough unless you're still leaving tasty food everywhere.

@BESW They seem to love my pantry. And my delicious rock candy. The tiny knaves.
(Yeah, probably all but lost. Not a huge fan of grape flavor anyways.)

1:07 AM
Different ants like different things. Our main categories here are water ants, grease ants, and sugar ants.

@Papayaman1000 do you think you're going to be available over the next few evenings for some 5e? got a dungeon I could use playtesters for

I hope it helps.

@BESW I seem to have sugar ants, crystallized sugar ants, and honey ants. Just about anything to improve my tea attracts them, it seems.
@Shalvenay Ooh, bad timing. M&W are usually my free evenings. I might be able to, but I'm likely to be kinda spotty (because hooray young children).

Ah, sweet ants. They'll go away if you lock up the sweets and use the spray on their trails.
Airtight containers are our friends.

@BESW For keeping the tasty bits safe, or TPKing anyone without a Magelight? :P
"You enter the room. The door closes behind you with the sound of suction."
"Gruk light torch. Gruk don't like dark."
"As the torch ignites, an engraving becomes visible. It reads, 'Let not the light snuff out your life'. The walls are smooth and seamless."
"Probably built by vampires or something. Let's keep moving."
[2 minutes later]
"You all die of toxic smoke inhalation and asphyxiation. Reroll your characters."
"WHAT?!"
"Not my fault you used an open flame in an airtight room."

1:17 AM
confined space casualties, man

I kind of want to make a chat event where all the GMs here have to improvise a three-paragraph description of a setting given a simple prompt, like "spider cave" or "dragon's den".
30 minutes. Anything taken from a sourcebook is an autoban. Winner gets a congratulatory Meta post or something, and a chance to run a one-off of the setting should they choose.
Maybe instead of just locations, it can be things like NPCs too.
"A merchant with a missing finger and a scar across his chest, visible from shoulder to waist. A player asks him how that happened. He takes a hearty swig of his drink and begins."
"An ancient-looking longsword with a blue crossguard and an intricately-carved pommel. It bears the crest of a royal family that held power here, centuries ago. What's its history, its purpose?"
[Bonus points if they get the reference.]

@Papayaman1000 why only GMs though? we can do it as a round robin stackizen thing
@Papayaman1000 strolen?

@daze413 I just mean it's generally geared towards that GM improv skill
@daze413 Zelda. The Master Sword.
Hell, maybe even make it a joint thing with Worldbuilding, idk

hey there @daze413

@Shalvenay heyy! pretty excited to see the berserking flying sword in action haha
@Papayaman1000 needs a little more polishing, I think, before suggesting on the chat events meta. But I'd be totally interested in that, and would get an upvote from me

1:33 AM
yeah -- if Papayaman can give it a shot and we can get 1 more player...I think we can do a quick run tonight, no?

@daze413 Of course. Just sorta popped into my head after realizing, "huh, I seem to make up off-the-cuff GM-party interactions pretty frequently here".

or at least we can start one tonight no?

@Shalvenay idk with @Papayaman1000 , but I'd be down with playing 2 chars?

@daze413 we can try it with 3 7th levels -- you playing 2 and @Papayaman1000 playing the third if he's available

@Shalvenay I'll give it a shot. If I can find the character sheet from my Wizard, could I just use him? He seems like a good character to run one-shots and such. And I'm totally down with however many people.

1:35 AM
@Papayaman1000 L7 I take it?
(or better, ofc)

@Shalvenay Yeah sure why not

alrighty then -- to the back room we go!
hey there @NautArch

That's about the "my character is finally blossoming into a true character on the crunchy side of things" point

"Spider's Cave" is obviously a cynical transhumanist dystopia game about gonzo journalists working to expose their supercity's most vile corruptions while fighting their own egos and the hedonistic temptations surrounding them.

back room?
howdy @Shalvenay

1:37 AM
uhh... how do you want us to make characters? @Shalvenay

@daze413 stats? 4d6d1 or point buy your choice
and just drop a summary in the back room

im a sucker rolling... a rolling sucker? rolling a sucker?

@Shalvenay got room for 1 more?

yes! so we dont have to make 2 chars haha

@NautArch ya, sure! L7, D&D 5e -- 4d6d1 x6 or point buy your choice for stats

1:38 AM
sweet! what do we have so far? Any needs? UA?

Bloody... why was my character sheet in my Chrome App folder? Good thing I haven't packaged it yet.

@NautArch we have a wizard. UA I probably wouldn't know well enough to adjudicate -- so I think it'd be best not to use it for speed's sake

no worries
er...where's the backroom?

@NautArch invited :)

...hm. Eclipse Phase transhumanism meets InSpectres startup mechanics with... hm. I'm kinda spoilt for choice on a personal character arc option.

1:53 AM

hey again @Yuuki

'ello

how're things going?

It's all right.

I take it you don't have any other feedback re: our dungeon run?

1:58 AM
Not really, I think I said all that was on my mind.

2:09 AM
ok, cool

Q: Why do we ask for the body of the question to demonstrate the tags it uses?

markovchainIn a few questions I've raised in the past, it's been pointed out to me that it is not enough to just include the tags you categorize the Q into, but also call it out in the body of the Q itself. I've had this pointed out for a statistics Q, a designer-reasons Q, and most recently, a rules-as-wri...

@MadMAxJr QUite a night. Two showdowns and no character deaths!
@daze413 @Papayaman1000 I'd upvote, too!

3:19 AM
hey there @nitsua60

@Shalvenay hiya

@nitsua60 how're things going?

Good--survived two more years in Kingom Death: Monster. That's a pretty good session.
Trying to figure out how/when/what to host as a chat event. Maybe Colonypunk during my next study hall shift....

@nitsua60 zombie infestation in the back room here xD

@Shalvenay Oh, cool! I'll take a look over the t'script when I've got some time tomorrow.

3:34 AM
@nitsua60 also having problems with the starboard over there. got an uberlong post I want starred but not pinned:

but I can't seem to get there. it either wants the post pinned (not just starred) or neither pinned nor starred

@Shalvenay Why not pin it? (And just unpin when you're done playing?)

@nitsua60 I can, but it seems to not show up in the pinboard now that I've tried various combos of starring, unstarring, pinning, and unpinning

@Shalvenay hmm... then you probably know more than I =(

@nitsua60 is it in the pinboard for you?
@nitsua60 nvm, there

4:05 AM
@nitsua60 Incidentally, while Talos is a storm god, he's not a sea god.

So far as I know, nobody can star their own message without pinning it.
Unpinning isn't actually a workaround; it only looks starred but unpinned until you refresh your page.

@BESW ugh
it wasn't even my post originally
I'm just living with it on the pinboard for now :P

Ah, I see.

Q: Revisiting the [just-for-fun] tag

markovchainI didn't know there was a previous discussion on contests about making character sheets. The discussion there goes back and forth between the merits and demerits of allowing such exceptions to the normal rules, as long as they are tagged "just for fun." The top rated answer discusses rules to fo...

5 hours later…
12:41 PM
top o the morn!

hello!

[wave]

Today is looking like my fourth Monday in a row :/

12:57 PM
@NautArch Is it raining for you? I woke up and thought it was just a dark day. Opened up by blinds to see a downpour.

@Adam Clouds movedi n last night and just some periodic drizzles right now. Work is what's making everyday a Monday for me. I don't mind the rain, although I've finally started running again and this'll pause that.

I get you. My office is under construction, so I have to work from home this week. I'm starting to go a little stir crazy. Combine that with crunch time, and it isn't the most fun work week here either

ugh
I had an employee give me notice she was leaving, asked if she could stay for more than 2 weeks to give me time to find/train and she says yes. 3 days later she sends an email saying she won't be coming back in. Then another employee is out sick for the past 2 days with a hurt back.
and in the emails says, "but i'm not leaving on bad terms"

1:14 PM
lol @NautArch

facepalm moment

@NautArch rip

on the plus side, started @Shalvenay dungeon last night and played a Ranger. I think I really like that class.

"im not leaving on bad terms" = "well, if this thing doesn't work out, i can go back, right?"

critical fumble

1:33 PM
you should email her back thanking her for her work and wishing best of luck, etc. Then sign with a fumble'd d20 at the bottom.

thought the question is the same, the context isn't.
the related questions do not answer what happens during a Wild Surge

Context isn't, but I don't think it matters. Summoned is summoned. WHether it was purposefully summoned or accidentally, the summoned creature doesn't know the difference.
THere's no description in a summoning spell of a convesration first :)

So in 5ed you can no longer summon a willing creature? Like the old Planar Ally spells?
You could force an angel to murder children?
On Wild Surge specifically, i see it being subject to table variation. The two times we had someone fumble and accidentally summon a creature, it attacked the party.

@ShadowKras Hmm, I do see a difference - I'm going to put in an answer and remove my dupe request.

1:43 PM
Aparently, Gate is an exception: You gain no special power over the creature, and it is free to act as the DM deems appropriate. It might leave, attack you, or help you.

@ShadowKras Planar Ally still exists. Though it doesn't summon a creature as much as you request its boss to send it to help you. It also is under no obligation to help you, but you can barter with it and it probably won't just attack you on sight.

Then its different from other summon spells?
or 5ed lacks a definition of "summon" on the magic chapter?

yeah, it's not a Conjure X spell

@ShadowKras It's certainly different, at least in the sense that half of the spell's text is about the proper way to pay the creature to help you. And you don't really "summon" it at all. It's sent to you by a much stronger being that you are beseeching for aid.
I mean, I guess that kind of is summoning, but it isn't the typical "rip you from your home plane and bend you to my will!" type of summoning

@Adam right, it's more of a "holy crap, how did i Just get here? What's going on?" type of moment.

1:52 PM
@NautArch I think it's more like your boss walking into your office saying "by the way I'm going to need you to head down to our client and give them a hand in person" Except, you know, more cosmic and with less choice involved

@Adam this isn't a warlock thing, it's a sorcerer thing. Their magic is raw and unexplained. No stronger being.

@NautArch Oh, I was talking about planar ally, not the wild magic surge
wild magic surge is definitely "holy crap! how did I end up here?!"

@Adam ah, gotcha. It's also interesting that the spell is a Conjuration and not a "summon"
but i definitely no longer think it's a dupe

Q: Are there issues with a tiny alchemist having a tiny tumor familiar?

Richard FitzinwellSo I'm starting a new character, and im planning a Svirfneblin with permanenced Reduce Person (making me tiny sized). Now my question is about the tumor familar discovery, alowing me to have a tiny/diminutive tumor that can detach and take a form of an animal. Now I'm thinking scorpion which is ...

This question is equal parts cute and revolting. :D

At first I thought it said "Are there tissues with a tiny alchemist..." which was much more biological.

2:05 PM
i went looking for images to attempt to describe what it would look like and... yeah... dont do it.

I had a D&D 3.5 villain who specialised in all the varieties of necrotic cyst. That was fun.

whoops, answered the tiny size, but thought it was 5e. Does pathfinder use the same "size" system? Where size isn't actual size, but space control?

yes and no.

okay, glad i deleted my answer :)
posted it, saw the pathfinder tag, and deleted it.

A creature's size is the rough area it occupies, not the creature's dimensions.
but every creature can squeeze itself into a smaller size category.

2:09 PM
ok, my answer is still probably right, but i have no idea what the source would be to prove it (I don't have any pathfinder books)
but doesn't matter, as yours has already been accepted, @ShadowKras

Core rulebook has those definitions.

Yea but he shouldnt accept it so fast

[comforting backrubs and offers of chocolate]

Dont' have said core rulebook. I'm not too concerned - but feel free to add that to your response :)

2:13 PM

2 hours later…
3:46 PM
@NautArch If "an aura of sunlight" can be interpreted as anything other than "an aura made up of sunlight", I'll eat my shoe.

@Adam You are not allowed to season it with brains.
Ultimately, I think the comment helped my answer. But we'll see what enkryptor thinks.
but i did want to write "obvious answer is obvious"

@NautArch You're not the boss of me! I'll season my shoe how I like!

1 hour later…
4:56 PM
@SevenSidedDie I'd really like to answer that playing card question, ut I also don't want to go anywhere near it.
i did it. i feel dirty.

5:17 PM
I think it's a fine answer. Magic stone is actually a pretty neat idea. Though I would make his character get the cantrip some way normally through the game, and probably say that he had to experiment a bit to get it to work with paper cards instead of stones

@NautArch It seems like its just a matter of using homebrew to reflavour something, but I like your answer.

.My first thought wasn't Mythbusters, but Gambit.

Agreed. I was thinking "querent is asking 'how do I play gambit in D&D'"
Which is why I stayed away from it :p

@nitsua60 How long have you been playing K:DM? What do you think of the ruleset?

@Adam Would be a cool build, though. Quarterstaff and magic stone playing cards.
I guess it's a Druid base.

5:22 PM
@NautArch Feels wrong thematically. Maybe an eldritch knight with some feats?

@Adam Yeah, eldritch knight seems a bit more on-topic. Just thinking staff/magic stone are both Druid things.
and being from the swamp
swamp being louisiana
It also probably wasn't a great idea to cite Mythbusters when they busted the myth.

@NautArch Luckily, Gambit's cards were only so deadly because of his powers, so translating that out for magic doesn't really lose anything, if that's what the querent is going for

I don't think it was, though. He just wants to throw regular cards and hurt people. And do it with a sneak attack.

You can use ordinary playing cards to dismantle a watermelon, see my answer on that post for video links.

@GOATNine I saw the post, but all the videos are broken? I'm still trusting my Mythbuster buddies. They busted the lethality of throwing playing cards.
but ultimately, this is a DM call. And it's a very reasonable call to say "no".

5:30 PM
@NautArch I can confirm, they are all broken

@NautArch at work so can't watch the episode, did the machine they make launch the cards straight? Or did it spin them?

@GOATNine Also, every other video I see of the playing card/watermelon is either fake or posted by a magician (also known as fake.)
@GOATNine To be honest, I didn't watch the episode - I went with their final verdict.

@NautArch fair enough, I deleted the answer as I can't provide substantial backing for it

@NautArch Gambit was my first thought too.
('Course he puts magic in 'em.)

Aside from all that, the watermelon doesn't convince me. It's a rather poor substitute for flesh.
@GOATNine It was basically like a pitching machine. You could put the cards in either lengthwise or widthwise. Widthwise gives it more spin of course. Either way they tried, it didn't kill any of them. The best they got was some paper cuts if you launch them at ~150 mph
Had they been wearing a shirt or the like, it might have even spared them from the paper cuts too.

5:40 PM
@Adam I'd be willing to consider an adventurer launching at that speed (because fantasy!), but even at that speed, the damage is negligible.
which makes it a reasonable "sorry,man"

Now, if the guy has a custom deck of steel playing cards made...Then we'd be talking

@KorvinStarmast I had to look up every piece of what you wrote. I guessed LoL was league of legends. That helped me figure it out:)

@NautArch I hoped you'd enjoy the jest, I'll go and remove that comment.

hehe

@ShadowKras Very cool! But I'm still unconvinced of their lethality.

TIL, throwing a card through a banana or pickle can be done.
but who knows how soft they were, and that's very different than if there was anything covering it up. And he still missed a bunch.

5:56 PM
Its as lethal as a dart, really.
Maybe with enough cuts you can kill someone by bleeding.
but comparing a card to a dagger is a little too much

@ShadowKras As @SevenSidedDie said, a dart weapon is not like a game dart.
and Mythbusters pretty much busted that you can't. But sure, with enough cuts anyone could die. So make that something like .001 HP damage/hit? With a massive reduction in your attack modifer to account for needing to nick the one space that is exposed?

@MadMAxJr A couple of years--a work-buddy of mine KS'ed the original.

@MadMAxJr I think it's got the most amazing flavor/theme of any game I've ever played.

6:00 PM
I think it lives in a liminal, half-illuminated space between board game and TTRPG.

@KorvinStarmast Thanks for the cleanup and link to the DM decision maker question.

Individually I like all three phases, but it does feel like it can drag--I think the mode-switching is just cognitively heavy?

Why am I wary to click a link that talks about penetrating a watermelon.

(And this is coming from a guy who likes original Axis and Allies, mind you.)

Yes, the playing cards are not dangerous due to their flexibility and material. But nothing prevents you from using cards made from another material that is resistant against impact on the flesh.

6:02 PM
@ShadowKras Absolutely. But then you are straying from an Improvised Weapon into a custom weapon.

@MadMAxJr some of the group and I were talking for an hour earlier today about the difficulty we have running quick combats... there's some streamlining that I think might have benefited things. Whether that streamlining's in the rules, or just in the game design (gear-grid, character record, &c.)?
How 'bout you?

I'm waiting for the 1.4/1.5 update to streamline some of the combat.

I don't know about you guys, but that's the kind of dart I use for my dart boards

22 mins ago, by Adam
Now, if the guy has a custom deck of steel playing cards made...Then we'd be talking

6:04 PM
Also, making use of the one card replacement he suggested which gives The Butcher a single weakness.

@MadMAxJr I haven't been following development--what's the update promising?

I've only played about five years. Mostly keep going back to the Lion to farm it for parts.

(streamlined combat?)

The update will be an overhaul based on internal and external player feedback. It also streamlines the rules for expansions.
A game will have a setup like Base game, Slot A expansions, Slot B expansions, Slot C expansions. You're only meant to put one of each type of expansion in if you're using them.
Because some people have tried to play with literally everything at once.

I don't even thing you necessarily need to change the combat rules... maybe just redesign grid or sheet, or make a "showdown sheet" that would gather the numbers that you need--which currently live in four or five different places--into one place.

6:06 PM
There will also be an optional advanced rule guide. A few items may get tweaked, new cards issued.
The advanced rule guide is apparently for even more in depth characters and possibly longer campaigns.
Also they're nerfing the... I forget what they're called. The prodigy children you can end up with through sheer luck. Amazing stats, but they live for something like five years then cease to exist.
Our village got a little silly. We started naming survivors after the cast of Seinfeld.

5 years....adventures and campaigns have been born and died by the hundreds within that time frame.

I believe the random encounter (d100) is being redone. Some were unclear, some were just unreasonably deadly, even for K:DM.
I'm still very sad he cut The King expansion/finale because he wasn't happy with the test plays.
That expansion would have setup a more intriguing ending and also would have pulled back the veil a little on the realm of stone faces.
The next wave is actually going to introduce some of the strange locations. The forest and the city.
I'd need to dig back through the backer notes for specifics.
But still. I have all the pieces that have gameplay components. :D

@NautArch a pleasure to serve

6:24 PM
@KorvinStarmast I did update the answer with the DMG info.

6:50 PM
@Adam What about someone with an Amazon metal credit card?

@doppelgreener You get NOTHING!

it would be something like this: steel throwing cards
He is throwing these.

If his DM is willing, there's a lot to work with here.

7:35 PM
@NautArch The question being asked is "is the DM right" and my answer is yes. But I did not need to write the answer, as others have already done a fine job. And the question was DOA since it asked for a +str mod for a thrown improvised weapon. I guess you can ask but that question seems to miss a number of points on how 5e works.
Rule of Cool is subject to DM ruling.

@NautArch I don't believe that lightning arrow makes the ammunition magical before it has taken effect. That is, when you attack with the ammunition/weapon it changes to lightning, at which point it becomes magical. Before that it's just a regular arrow/bolt/dagger.

8:23 PM
I'd totally allow a modified magic stone spell to be able to fling playing cards as a weapon.
