looks good
she can do most things Dr Light can do, besides probably the science type things

She'll want to keep her Staff of Seven Calamities, so I figure "Doctor Light" will claim he stole it when he escaped.

it's a little odd to see one character changed to be a little more like another one
@BESW lol

@trogdor Aside from the stunts that changed with her shift in form, it's mostly just a focusing on her aspects to be specific to the immediate situation.

yeah
but even her aspects have changed

Only in scope.

12:43 AM
the only thing that is exactly the same are approaches, I think
yeah not entirely

I must study the Ancients' Leader is the current step toward her general Motive aspect I must bring Umdaar to its knees.

but keep in mind,. aspects tend to change slowly
I am not complaining about it, I am just mentioning how odd it is to witness it

Her shared aspect is just talking about exactly what good advice Sko-Larr gave her for this mission.
NPCs get to be wobbly.

true
but she is also sorta a PC for a while XD
it certainly isn't permanent but still

If she were still an NPC under my control, I'd leave the aspects alone but remember that narratively she's got more focused goals derived from them.

12:46 AM
yeah
I think it is good you changed them the way you did for now
it will help me remember what I am supposed to do with them

(And technically Hulking Plant Mutant isn't a character aspect, it's just the result of a Create Advantage action. But for our purposes, partly because you'll be playing alongside PCs with five character aspects, we'll act like it's a character aspect for most purposes.)
Sometimes you stare into the Abyss, and the Abyss says, "I'm thankful for you…"

@BESW Hey! How ya been?

Not bad. My campaign is making me happy, at least. Yourself?

Busy as hell trying to finish up my degree this year
All else has been put on hold, so that I can graduate and get a job lol

That seems reasonable.

I did run a FAE game for some little cousins of mine back in October though

2:50 AM
Cool!
How'd that work out?

I asked them each to pick a topic they wanted to play in, and one said Hogwarts and another said Zelda
Sooo, I modeled the world in that there were three schools, one for adventurers, one for wizards, and another for fairies, and there was a tournament involving all the schools where they had to form teams with one student from each school
Because, you know, one wanted to be a wizard and the other a young Link

Nice. Mashup concepts can be fun.

They ended up having a blast. Fighting some monsters, getting double crossed by another team of students

(My current campaign is just starting an adventure that's basically "Hellboy meets Thundercats.")

I tried to make the cave they all got sent into have things where each of them could shine with their characters, and it worked pretty well.
Nice!
I love the mashup concept in general. Fun to imagine "what happens if we cross X with this bit of Y"

2:54 AM
@KyleS. One of the cool things about FAE is that Approaches make it very easy to just use narrative for spotlighting; skill-based systems often require more focus on mechanics to orchestrate spotlights.

I love it everytime I have another interaction with it
Just need to get my main group to give it another serious go
We're so D&D minded that it's been difficult to convince them to try anything else. Not that we've been playing D&D lately either...

Maybe try some of the more D&D-like versions of Fate?
Or, go for something totally different to break out of the mould and get into different patterns of thought.
I suggest looking at the Worlds of Adventure for Fate. They're free and awesome and cover a wide variety of genres and styles.
My group is really loving Masters of Umdaar, which is an homage to Thundercats, He-Man, and other similar "laser fantasy" pulp adventures.

How are those modules? Good since you're using them?

@BESW yeah -- I tend to do a fair bit of mashing myself in my head -- one theme has been tossing my D&D chars across the interview table from that infamous Pointy-Haired Boss xD

6:28 AM
@Magician We got clarification on that limb loss question, I've removed my comment and edited the question a bit

Cool. I gotta leave now, so I'll just say that, imo, going straight for "your group is terrible, leave now" in response to a paragraph of text is not at all helpful. All sorts of context you could be missing.
Not a kind of advice that should be handed out without a conversation first.

@Magician I missed the "friendly arguments" thing at the start.
All sorts of context could be missing, but all of that sounded like every question we've had on that ever, all of which have been people having a terrible time and being terrible to each other.
(this is legitimately the first time I've read something like this which was friendly)

6:44 AM
(of course, sounds completely different with the "friendly arguments" thing that i missed and you did not)

7:14 AM
@doppelgreener the tone of the question was confusing, yes -- it was very unclear whether this was a theorycrafting gedankenexperiment or something the DM was actually threatening to do to someone's PC

@KyleS. The ones I've used work quite well, and they all seem to be good quality. Generally they each present a setting, a way to run character creation to fit the setting, at least one modification to the basic Fate ruleset to make it reinforce the setting, and a short adventure to get you started.

9:08 AM
One of my players made this, anticipating that it will be relephant for tomorrow night's session:
I'm unreasonably pleased to have a group where this is the sort of thing that happens.

where they make memes out of what they think will happen next session?
or the wacky scenario itself?

Yes.

9:25 AM
Hello folks!

[wave]

[ice]

[fire]

@Anaphory (was intended to list the Metroid beam types :P)

9:35 AM
@Derpy Not that I know them. [imperialist]? Wot.

@BESW I am sure there is a joke I am missing.

Ah, it does not actually fire imperialists or imperialism. Okay.

@Derpy "Bear" rhymes with "Air" but is funnier.

@BESW I should have know. I am not really used to think about the spelling of words.

Neither is English, frankly.

9:51 AM
@BESW The (not so) subtle difference in the various different spelling my English teachers gave me for the same word already gave me an hint.

10:03 AM

10:13 AM
yo

Yawp.

@BESW Do you exercise your right to bear arms?

Well, I do wear T-shirts most of the time.

Ok, I have an awesome idea.
Lvl 1 DnD PCs are being given quest by the barkeep that is rebranding his tavern, Whore's Nipple into something else due to PR concerns.
He chose Bugbear's Head and now needs an appropriate trophy for proper branding (above the entrance)

Cute.

10:19 AM
Nice :)

(The very first random D&D-stuff generator my players ever found, they immediately generated a tavern called The Mummy's Left Nipple.)

When the players succeed and bring said head, he decides that it's hideous and will scare the clients away. He proposes a new name: Sheriff's Arms and offers a new quest...

(I have some serious questions about the creator of that generator. Questions I hope will remain forever unanswered.)
Personally I always default to The Horned King for my Tavern of Dubious Repute.
It means the Devil... and cuckolded royalty.

Whore's Nipple is my Tavern-of-choice if I really want it to be a total dump.
It was pictured in Korgoth of Barbaria and remains my all-time favourite.
@Tashio Hi!

You gotta love a tavern that's wiling to simultaneously impugn the queen and call the king a demon.

10:23 AM
Yeah.
My friend used to have a Burning Tavern concept, a tavern that was constantly on fire.

"Burning Tavern" is just the reason my original group usually had to leave the town.

The history is that the tavern was built in highly contested lands and every time there was a dispute it was burned to the ground. After three iterations the barkeep commissioned a wizard to make it immune to fire.
The next time it was set alight it proved completely fireproof... but the fire was still burning, it just didn't do any structural damage.
The everflaming tavern became a major landmark and a very popular, albeit quite hot, establishment.

...and now it caters to an elite patronage of teetotal fire elementals?

The barkeep was very disillusioned with discount magical services.
I can't remember who visited it, I never went inside. We just saw a burning tavern and decided to keep our distance.
I'm no fun, I know.

'cause man, I wouldn't put alcohol in that building.

10:29 AM
I remember that only the hatching on the roof was actually alight. The stone walls were very warm, but not aflame.
I think the reasoning was that only flammable stuff burns and is not damaged by the flames, but still burns.
Because sloppy magic.

Don't let @Shalvenay anywhere near that tavern or he'll turn it into an infinite energy source.

Wouldn't the tavern be by nature endothermic?
There is a unsustainable exothermic reaction that does not consume tavern's mass. I'm pretty sure the net energy transfer would be negative.

Nothing you've said implies "unsustainable."

Are we still talking about magic?

2 hours later…
12:42 PM
Sounds from our solar system & outside it. (Some interpreted from emissions in the electromagnetic spectrum instead.)

@doppelgreener ...That sounds much less safe for work than it probably is.

@BESW Ha! Renamed to be a bit more accurate as well actually

@Doppelgreener that's quite interesting
a hum
and some hissing
pretty much what you'd expect

@eimyr is the universe made of snakes ??????? find out in our groundshattering documentary

@doppelgreener 50 minutes in you find out it's not

12:46 PM
It might, however, be made out of the soundtrack from The Shining.
Tune in next week for the exciting conclusion.

Is the universe's soundtrack being played on a re drum?

re drum! re drum! re drum!
I assume this means dark matter is either ectoplasmic blood, or the tears of Shelly Duvall.
("The Tears of Shelly Duvall" would be a great name for an album.)

(or a tavern. It would definitely have a nice quest associated with it...)
@Alyksandrei Hi!
"All work and no play makes Johnny a dull barkeep"

wat
If it's funny I don't get it.
But it is creepy as hell.

12:55 PM
It's mostly just weird. Shelly Duvall is kinda surreal.
Most, if not all, of those clips are from the introductions to her series of fairy tale retellings. Which are also intensely surreal and seriously worth watching.

@BESW What rhymes with what? I tought bear rhymed with beer.

bear and air

No, beer rhymes with gear and here, but not with bear, air, or there (which all rhyme with each other).

Can someone recommend a good article about game and campaign pacing? But not about techniques how to create a certain pacing but rather how to choose a fitting one?

@eimyr I've gotta hit the sack, but if you add some details about your situation I might be able to find something useful in the morning.
ttfn

1:03 PM
see ya!

1:29 PM
@eimyr Hiya! I'm at work right now so my response time might be slow. How's it going in here?

Quite good, how about you?

2:02 PM
bored at work. watched ROTK yesterday, and started FOTR...will probably finish FOTR and start TT after I'm done shopping online...really bored. Wish I was home with my nephew. He's 2.

Your jobdoes not seem very demanding.

If his job gives him absolutely nothing to do except be mind numbingly bored, it's probably one of the most demanding jobs of them all.

Quick! Don't think about anything!
"Brian, I've seen you working lately. Do you understand this violates the company policy?"
Oh, @Magician has a new avatar.
Maybe I'll find him a bit less intimidating now...

@eimyr I dunno, there's already been speculations that I must be an intellect devourer because of the change. Of course, I can neither confirm nor deny such accusations.

@Magician Whew. If you're an intellect devourer I'm safe and can converse happily.

2:16 PM
Carry on then :)
Seriously, though, intimidating?

@eimyr It's a "weekend" aka holiday. I'm supposed to be manning the cash register for a valet service, but nobody's coming to visit the hospital today...Been here for a couple of hours and had less than 10 customers. Not very busy today.

@Magician I don't know. We didn't talk much. You were portrayed as some ultra-mature-theme psyche exploration master and a GM who thinks deeply surreal and meta-connected games are light reading.

@eimyr are you sure you are talking to the right person?
Jan 18 at 14:58, by BESW
Working title My Little Psyche: Friendship is a Fragile Barrier Holding Back My Seething Neuroses.

@Derpy whatever I say, someone always will have a BESW quote for it.
Yes, I'm quite sure it's Magician.

Hah. I... Well. I'm flattered, I guess. I can not be silly sometimes. But my interactions with the chat over the last half a year or so have largely been drive-by jokes only I find funny.

2:24 PM
But then you're mentioned whenever deeply psychological themes are brought up.
Hence my image of you seems to be skewed into some sort of a RPG-psychologist.

I certainly don't mean to come off unfriendly or intimidating. So, hi. I'm Magician. I used to be more active here, and used to write a blog. I'll resume that one day. But now I'm writing a novel, because I'm insane. What're you up to this fine time of day?

@eimyr it's not inaccurate! he's put a lot of thought into this stuff, and given us some reference material via his blog even 8)

Aug 1 '13 at 14:31, by BESW
I haven't said anything about Freud.

Actually, at work, entertaining myself with the chat while some maps are generated.

(I should also get bonus point for using this one totally out of context too)

2:26 PM
@Magician So what do you play these days?

@eimyr Just came home from running a 13th Age game. The group wanted something fun and relaxing after the, er, grueling marital horror game of tremulus we've had over the last couple of months. I can see where you'd get that impression...
I'm running Eyes of the Stone Thief mega-dungeon/campaign, straight out of the book. It's been pretty great so far.

Yeah... wait a sec

Magician is the major Eclipse Phase expert, though.
this one
I tried to figure out what Eclipse Phase is about and it seems like a major challenge

It is! And I wouldn't recommend the system itself. But the setting is amazing, once you wrap your head around it.
Was there something in particular that gave you trouble?

nah, just the general premise. And not so much trouble rather than a high entry treshold

Every time one of you says something like "it is complex/challenging" I see the old Rolemaster tables floating in front of my eyes, still laughing at my attempts to resolve any action in a reasonable time.

2:36 PM
@Derpy There is, unfortunately, some of that in the system (though I suspect to a much lesser degree). But the setting is conceptually challenging on its own.

@Derpy The most challenging thing I've ever encountered in gaming? Playing Mage the Ascension with beginners.

@eimyr There is, indeed. No way around but to read the book.

@Magician I actually managed to play a reasonably successful "entry" campaign with players starting as mortals. The exposition killed it though. Wouldn't do it again.
However, I might do it again next year, but I'm going to at least give M20 quickstart booklet to the players

@eimyr Talking about Mage? "Mortals" doesn't quite have a meaning in EP.

yes
I never played EP, not once.
Sorry.
Anyway, do you play online or in person?

2:42 PM
In person. Online doesn't do it for me, generally speaking. I found it a bit easier when I GM'd, as I'd always have things to do, but as a player it was just too easy to disengage and let others talk.

I see.

How do you play?

However I can lately.
I have a Courtly Intrigue game that I frequently brag about around chat, which is currently endangered because I moved. I can still commute, but it's less fun if you have to add 45 minutes and petrol.
I've done some PBF in the past and a recent Roll For Shoes game in RPG.SE chat, but it's less entertaining.

3:37 PM
sigh water pressure rules for 4e

3:49 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith The approach to water pressure that would make sense to me would be either "you can't go there" or "you'll suffocate before you reach it" or "you're big damn heroes, what've you got to be worried about"

That water pressure question is such a newbie question, it's hard to respond to it well. Good job @JoshuaAslanSmith, I didn't even attempt...

@eimyr wasnt going to but I saw the 1st answer and was like NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE
I think I'll edit it to have quotes from the PHB or whatever about hte type of stories 4e is trying to tell

@JoshuaAslanSmith I sympathise. It was terrible.

Q: D&D 5th Gen, Custom Story

ThomcdromMy Dungeon Master has made his own story and he asked how it was. I criticized him about his story only being interesting for one character(that has a massive amount of backstory and was made WITH the dungeonmaster). I complained about it not being interesting for the other parties. Is it the D...

I want to kill it with fire, but at the same time it has a real problem we can address.

4:07 PM
@eimyr I am starting to think that this room seem to be attracting ponies because you have so many questions that actually are just "friendship problems"

@Derpy wouldn't ponies have relatively less friendship problems than the rest of population?

@eimyr yes, but you should consider the paranoid lemma. After a while ponies start to look around for friendship problems because they have fun attempting to resolve them (problem begin that most of the time they manage to make them worse)
And, thinking of it, I shouldn't be the one speaking here since I wrote to the SE community manager about a "friendship problem" just yesterday. One that I wasn't even involved in.

huh
on RPG.SE?

Hey

nope, don't worry

4:17 PM
Also, are you saying that the ponies would nitpick and create friendship problems where there are not? I seems like poor friendship management. I'm thinking now that there is some sort of Friendship Equilibrium, which outliers would drift towards, either through Stockholm Syndrome or BFF fatigue.
@Tashio how you doin'?

Pretty decent
Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel for projects at work

Well done!

@eimyr good all around answer to the custom story quesiton

lol
ponies everywhere
(Full disclaimer, I got hired to write a Ponyfinder module :p)

4:26 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith Personally I hate it. Beating around the bush, no clear solution. I wish the guy would include other player's views or GM's reaction

mayhbe he will edit it at some point over the weekend

@TimB Ponyfinder? LOL

@eimyr you would be frozen in awe by the sheer amount of pony-themed games and conversions we have. The problem is that only about 0.1% of them are ever completed.

I have no problem with that. I used to watch MLP, you know.
How does one get hired to write a pony module anyway?

@eimyr after reading those pc-logs in Fallout 4 I no longer ask myself such questions.

4:32 PM
I knew the person who edited the ponyfinder source book, he knew I wrote stuff. When they kickstarted a product and offered an adventure module as a stretch goal they came to me to write it :)
search for ponyfinder on drivethru rpg

4:42 PM
there's a whole world with multiple source books, adventures, modules, etc
overall quality is pretty good as well, more recent stuff especially

I know, but I also know that I don't really have much hopes to find someone to play those, at least offline.

It is a challenge. Many people are not into ponies.

@eimyr and risk to lose their "alpha male" status?

Well...

Don't worry, it wasn't aimed at anyone here.
Just the "show for little girls" popular belief.

4:51 PM
Some people are so into ponies that they would probably rather play pony FATAL.

@eimyr I have already expressed how I still don't consider some "fans" to be "into ponies", so excuse me if I will avoid arguing again what IMHO a MLP fan actually is.

@Derpy Your resistance will only make my pony harder.

Considering what I understood of the abominable game you just mentioned, this one line can be read in so many wrong ways that I really hope weren't intended. Leave those bad jokes to other rooms, please.

I should develop more than 5-second attention span.

Avoiding those is one of the reasons I moved to RPG Happy Land of Pegi-7

5:00 PM
Anyway, sometimes I find ponies are taking over chat rooms.
Or websites or other social common places.

never have been my intention.

And any resistance to pony affection is met with even more ponyfied retaliation.
Never mine to point towards anyone in particular.
There's nothing inherently wrong with ponies. I feel the same about Undertale, magical girls or politics.

@eimyr I can see your point. There are people that just want to convert the haters.
They usually miss two point:
first, not everyone is an hater
second, the haters are the one you will never convert
One Piece actually is pretty fitting on this one problem.

Hmmm, I wasn't exactly thinking about people trying to convert others (except when politics are in question).

@Derpy yeah, ponies are "meh, don't care" here -- if you want a not-fantasy-or-SF universe for me -- give me Dilbert!

5:04 PM
I was thinking of people who, say, flood a chat with X genre images and when someone complains they respond with 10x more X genre images.
not necessarily pony-related or this chat-related

@eimyr the only flood you may get from me is one single image I used to post to Shadow Den.

@eimyr :P

@Derpy I know that. I would point at anyone here with flooding accusation.
I'd say actually politics, religion, PCMR, gamergaters are the worst offenders.

@eimyr ick, GG. can that whole mess just go away?

nope
unless people stop projecting their own failures onto successful others

5:08 PM
@eimyr Nope, you don't really understand my example... Let me see....
^ this was the picture. An you may now then understand why I "spammed" it.
Where spammed was 2-3 times in a day at most.
(hint: they are pretty fond of playing Word Association with bad words abounding)

"She's a successful gamedev, she must have slept with entire IGN staff" "The immigrants are stealing our jerbs", "I have a PC and it invalidates the merit of consoles"
@Derpy Yeah, I remembered the message, but didn't know you spam it that much

@eimyr Was a (vain) attempt at remembering them that Word Association didn't need "uncouth words" to be fun.

Also, ş̨̣̼̗͙͖̝͚̌̉̈́̽͑̿ͧ͆͛̏ͣͭp̭̰̳͔͉̭͙̭̠̦̹̳̭̩̞̈́̓̋̑̓͒̄̚͜a̴̫͉̟̙̠͓̳̞̻̞̣̩̜̖͉̰͔ͣ̅ͭ̆͊ͯ̔̈́̽ͦ͜ͅm‌̛̠͈̯̗ͩͣ̅ͣ͗͌̍͌͂̍̋ͥ̀̀̚ͅm̷̡̲̟͉̝̳͉͔̃̒ͮ̈̍̂̿̓̽ͫ̚͜i̡̲͉̦̥͓͇͖̹̹̣̰͍̭̗̿̀͆͑̊͋ͤ́͋ͫ̏͋ͨ̆͊ͩ̓͝͝n͗̑‌̵̷̨̥͖̼̘̲̣͓ͤͯ̽͗̅͐̃̾ͤ̽͑ͮg̈̎ͤ̍̓͒̂̋ͧͩ̋͘͏͎̖̩͇̮̩̬͍̫̰̭

And a bet we made that I would post that one image every time I was around when a bad word was posted.
Thinking about it, in the end I just gave one more "fun reason" to continue the uncouth chains.

heh

5:14 PM
Other ponies images usually I leave to the SugarCube, so enter there at your risk
(just joking, it isn't actually so image intensive)
Anyway, I fear I will have to go for now.
See you later.

see ya, @Derpy!
