what was the name of that script that allows you to download different color schemes for gnome-terminal, such as monokai, dracula, etc. as a big list. i think it may have been made in python
May 23, 2018 21:09
what do you call a program that receives piped input? im thinking Pipee but maybe there's a formal term for it?
Aug 9, 2017 02:01
if I wanted to ask how to temporarily take over the terminal screen in the same manner that vim, nano, man take over the terminal screen, then return to the previous text when exited. what's a good way to "word" that question?
Jul 15, 2017 07:13
ah you're right. i thought there was some controversy i missed out on
Jul 15, 2017 07:04
anyone else see the vandalism of redhat's logo when you Google "redhat"? did I miss something?
Jul 13, 2017 16:43
@user3450548 yup, that's right. install netcat-openbsd then use sudo update-alternatives --config nc to switch to it

Q: What are the differences between netcat-traditional and netcat-openbsd?

spezticleWhat (if any) are the significant differences between netcat-traditional and netcat-openbsd? I'm having trouble finding any relative information. Anybody familiar that can offer some insight?

Jul 13, 2017 15:30
you're likely using netcat-traditional instead of netcat-openbsd, which has newer features like proxy
Jul 13, 2017 15:27
what device?
Jul 13, 2017 15:19
when you install a module in /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers, is it auto-detected by depmod or is there some kind of configuration file that has to be modified?

many people felt that by changing StackOverflow to StackExchange they were abandoning their roots as the home for programers and abandoning the community that built them in the first place. obsession with turning SO into a generic q&a site in order to allow easier expansion was turning them into a typical soulless corporate entity that values profits over people, like YA. the name change was largely a symbolic measure to re-assure users that stack will always be developers first
Jul 11, 2017 03:26
but i agree, its confusing

You may know us from such popular websites as Stack Overflow Q&A, Stack Overflow Careers, The Stack Exchange Q&A Network, and most of your Google search results.

Here’s what’s changing:

As of today, our company will be known as Stack Overflow.

Our logo is different. But only a little.

Not one other damn thing.

Here’s what “Stack Overflow” is:

A community where millions of programmers ask questions and share knowledge

The best place to get a job as a developer, or to hire a developer …

Jul 11, 2017 03:25
I recall that they changed the name of the company to Stack Overflow (from Stack Exchange) and the network within SO is called SE

am i crazy or is this a bug
Aug 19, 2017 15:36
why would a router hand out non-sequential ip addresses? 192.168.1.1 .. .2 .3 .6.. then random .88
Aug 13, 2017 03:09
@Bob I think (hope) that the GNOME disk utility takes that into account :P
Aug 13, 2017 03:05
an SSD would be nice, bit outa budget for what I need it for though :P thanks for the knowledge guy, much appreciate
Aug 13, 2017 03:04
yeah that makes sense. if i re-run the benchmark immediately after i still get slowed write speeds, but after a minute or so its back up to speed
Aug 13, 2017 03:02
very cool! but not mentioned anywhere in the packaging, almost feels like false advertising
Aug 13, 2017 03:01
interesting. is this standard for usb drives? i bought this one yesterday
Aug 13, 2017 03:00
normal for usb write speed to drop off after 400 mb? i.imgur.com/WV3m7jz.png

hey guys, a couple of years ago there was a firewall software that popped up a notification everytime an application made an outbound connection, allowing you to confirm or block that connection. does something like that still exist?
Jul 23, 2017 08:11
there should be a black market version of stack exchange for such problems
Jul 23, 2017 08:04
yeah sorry about that. i really dislike the non-verbose nature of windows, the effort to hide all the technical details from the user
Jul 23, 2017 07:53
by "close programs", you mean start killing processes :P i was hoping I wouldnt have to do that.. god i hate windows
Jul 23, 2017 07:51
that cursor that indicates a background process is doing something. id like generic instructions on how to identify the process that is triggering that cursor. it happens every few minutes, on its own, through no input of my own. going by CPU usage isn't enough because there isn't anything that stands out in particular
Jul 23, 2017 07:35
how do i find out what the hell keeps triggering the busy spinner cursor i.ytimg.com/vi/6IN34Kuyv50/hqdefault.jpg
Jul 22, 2017 04:50
hey.. how do i reboot in windows 10.. without hard rebooting. I dont want to risk running grub, which defaults to ubuntu, which is currently broken. if I accidentally hard reboot, then I wont be able to boot to windows because my hdmi TV doesnt work during the initial stages of boot, my laptop monitor is broken

so, package.json only allows one person to be in the author field, but many contributors. what is the etiquette for a project you forked? put yourself as the author and the creator as a contributor? or keep the creator as the author and add myself as a contributor?
May 18, 2018 02:28
everyone is needlessly verbose anyway :P
May 18, 2018 02:24
is there a word for "made more readable"? i renamed a buncha files and wonder what commit message to use

I had 20,000 reallocated sectors on my previous HDD. windows would take nearly 15 minutes of loading before it was usable, whereas ubuntu took 3. so maybe he's onto something :P
Jul 29, 2017 15:55
yup, not bad, about as good as it gets on an old netbook. i'm hearing that an encrypted home folder might slow down read/write speeds though
Jul 29, 2017 15:47
i am jealous lol i've got a 30 second boot im trying to speed up
Jul 29, 2017 15:45
wow! ssd?
Jul 29, 2017 15:40
hey guys, what kinda boot times do you get with ubuntu, in seconds?
Jul 25, 2017 16:52
oh cool, I haven't seen that checkbox. Thanks

"gnome-control-center keyboard" shortcut changing app doesn't seem to recognize scroll-lock by default. i had to manually set my shortcut to Scroll_Lock in deconf org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys .. bug?
Jul 25, 2017 16:14
hey guys, scroll lock key isn't being recognized in keyboard shortcuts?. i can remap every other key but pressing scroll lock doesn't get a reaction
Jul 13, 2017 16:48
when the keyboard becomes unresponsive (lights don't respond to capslock or numlock press), does that mean that the kernel failed? or could it be one of the layers below the kernel
Jul 12, 2017 07:38
hey, im getting inconsistent mouse cursor colors in gnome 3. i selected DMZ-black. but in certain windows, like gnome-terminal or nautilus, it still uses the default cursor theme. (problem persists after restart). How to fix?
