non-gis but latency on the connection try tracert to see how many hops its taking to the server and see how many milliseconds (smaller is better)

@JNat Static pages are fine, but there was interest with the blog at the start (September 2011) but this diminished quickly, so not to concerned.
Oct 21, 2016 13:45
@JNat I probably have done the most posts (not for a long while but even that is limited (3 or 4 posts) the question will be where do we migrate it to and how? If more GIS SE members were willing to add content, I would favour the migration of gis.blogoverflow.com

New blog post gis.blogoverflow.com/2013/09/another-look-at-gis-stackexchange [ I hear the empty echo of 9 days ago since the last member was in this room]
Aug 28, 2013 17:33
@DevdattaTengshe Nexus 7 has a good (quick cold start) gps built in - though you can pair standalone gps devices via Bluetooth- this might be a good GIS-SE question.
May 8, 2013 19:58
@Mintx can go back further (typesetting, camera & litho en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithography work) but does not involve computers/databases and a time where maps took time to make.

Rebecca there is a post pending - have been away - but can get the ball rolling again once back to into the full routine.
Sep 16, 2011 17:18
@underdark more than welcome too. I would be interested and expand my QGIS knowledge. I would like to style up some postgis data (road) network and make it presentable (cartographically) to users.
Sep 15, 2011 14:47
cross posts are good, though yes some back-linking to the GIS SE main site is better. @dassouki - yes you can post it else where - then on the GIS SE blog. Though there does need to be some expanded posts on questions that have been popular or detailed answers that can be expanded for an interesting post. Would like to see a post on the google (like) map in qgis - looks like QGIS can be more cartographic than I thought.
Aug 9, 2011 20:01
@George what issues do you have with ArcGIS server?
Aug 9, 2011 17:03
@ChadCooper I have put in a request for GISse to have an official blog. meta.gis.stackexchange.com/questions/576/…

GIS Chat is for any topics related to GIS Cartography and related geography topics - please be aware we have multiple users across many time zones across the world.

@Nxaunxau @PolyGeo about 30 minutes a day (during breaks at work) less at the weekend.
Sep 12, 2016 14:34
@PolyGeo @PolyGeo this message sums it up "I only noticed the elections because the top bar was there".... proves more visibility to the Election. There should be some SE system messages coming online today (out of our control) at the start of the nominations. see Nick Craver comments on the post (tagged declined system) meta.stackexchange.com/questions/134789/…
Sep 9, 2016 22:57
@PolyGeo in previous elections the moderators could (this option is now disabled) send top banner messages (for a set timeframe) to all users, this pointed more eyes on the meta page for the election info.

@RebeccaChernoff diplomatic persuasion to be a good community and highlight their good points.
Apr 27, 2011 21:54
Good luck to all candidates! have voted for 3 in this room :)
Apr 27, 2011 21:50
@KirkKuykendall no none so far.
Apr 27, 2011 21:47
@MichaelMrozek don't mind having a rhombus after my name.... geometry specific there.
Apr 27, 2011 21:44
@KirkKuykendall there are using it to create a map base to compete with google maps....
Apr 27, 2011 21:43
@mattwilkie agree non-binding votes (though 3 mods votes can close a post)
Apr 27, 2011 21:39
@RebeccaChernoff can promote the site whether a mod or not - moderators are to help keep the quality and consistency through the GISse...
Apr 27, 2011 21:31
@RebeccaChernoff don't we vote for a post to be closed? if 3 moderators is the minimum to close the post should be straightforward correct?
Apr 27, 2011 21:29
does GISse have a budget? (for online ads etc) - i doubt it - so word of mouth the best way.
Apr 27, 2011 21:28
@DanPatterson bye see around soon.
Apr 27, 2011 21:26
@underdark in other forums? GISse frown on this (as discovered in the early days)
Apr 27, 2011 21:24
How do we promote GISse for a big community base? more blog, twitter posts - any more ideas?

@RebeccaChernoff time is the biggest challenge (how to cover holidays and vacations??)
Apr 27, 2011 21:20
I don't mind the answering the 'non' PURE GIS questions some lead to a different way of thinking - Server set up is important to delivering a GIS Platform too.
Apr 27, 2011 21:17
but ESRI do have their own forums.... but GISse does get users faster answers! (bonus)
Apr 27, 2011 21:16
@MichaelTodd it can get a bit E-S-R-I orientated but thanks to @underdark and QGIS it leads to other ways GIS software can do it for minimum cost and fuss.
Apr 27, 2011 21:14
@scw and @mattwilkie have done an excellent job would be happy for them to continue if they or voters want them too.
Apr 27, 2011 21:13
@josh @KirkKuykendall question
Apr 27, 2011 21:12
@KirkKuykendall GISse is becoming a much healthier resource day thanks to the community as a broad range of questions and fast answers...
Apr 27, 2011 21:11
On the GISse most days - already approving or rejecting 'new users' edits
