Feb 8, 2018 07:08
@Deusovi (or other mods) apparently, the Winter Olympics are on, so happy times for the mods!
Feb 7, 2018 05:51
@Rubio quite the opposite. The mods have tools, therefore they control tools. If the mods control my account... does that make me a tool?
Feb 7, 2018 05:43
@JohnDvorak there's mod tools for that
Feb 7, 2018 05:41
@Rubio Righty-o! I thought it would be better to flag and be wrong than not flag and be right.
Feb 2, 2018 22:57
@Doorknob is the 6th hint dependent on the 1st and 5th hints?
Feb 1, 2018 23:01
if you want it to add multiple reasons (added 4 characters; deleted 5 characters; etc.) you have to delete the edit name each time you reedit, I think
Feb 1, 2018 22:57
It's more confusing when you edit twice within a few minutes so it gets saved as one edit.

In another puzzle, order meant alphabetical order, unfortunately fir(-e) is already in alphabetical order

@Deusovi Wait, I thought you were trapped in the maze

Hello everyone! I'm trying to use the Esoteric IDE for a big project but there seems to be a character limit. Is there a way to remove this?

Mar 15, 2018 21:03
@Chris Maybe I'll make one sometime
Mar 15, 2018 07:52
In general, the reasoning goes like this for problems with solutions sets of 3 or more: suppose we want to find the *actual* solution. Then find a common property between all the other solutions, note that it leads to multiple solutions, and conclude that the common property doesn't hold. This would mean that your desired solution is the only valid solution.
Mar 15, 2018 07:47
@Ariana see the problem?
Mar 15, 2018 07:47
If I place 3 to the side of the 1 and 2, there isn't a unique solution - 312 and 123. So 3 must be between 1 and 2, and so the solution must be 132 if we assume there is a unique solution.
Mar 15, 2018 07:46
If I place the 2 last, there isn't a unique solution - 132 and 312. So 2 should not be last, and since it must be after 1 in must be second. So the solution must be 123 if we assume there is a unique solution.
Mar 15, 2018 07:45
If I place the 1 first, there isn't a unique solution - 123 and 132. So 1 should not be first, and since it must be before 2 it must be second. So the solution must be 312 if we assume there is a unique solution.
Mar 15, 2018 07:43
For example, if I have the following puzzle: place 1, 2 and 3 in a line such that 1 comes before 2
Mar 15, 2018 07:42
The problem with assuming a unique solution in a non-unique solution is that we can find reasoning for any solution that will confirm it as a unique solution.
Mar 15, 2018 07:34
@Ariana want to come discuss this in Puzzling's chatroom?
Mar 15, 2018 07:34
@Ariana the other solutions are eliminated because you have assumed there is one solution.
Mar 15, 2018 07:34
@Ariana If we impose the condition that there can only be one solution, take any of the above solutions and you're done.
