@motosubatsu On the one hand, not doing great. On the other, despite all of that, I did just land a new job at a tech startup so that's pretty cool ^^

How's everyone doing?

Hey guys. Been a while :)

@Old_Lamplighter :)

better than me. But this room’s been getting progressively quieter for years. I suspect any conversation is better than nothing at all.

@JoeStrazzere You’d know

Hey everyone. Been a while. Think I was last in here back in January.

@zmike My standard for questions like this is always could this reasonably be a thing that might happen? And I think it meets that standard. So absent indications from the OP that they're making it up (or the story getting even weirder) I'd treat it as if it's a genuine question.

Q: How to talk about depression in interviews

whoisitI am a "new grad", looking for graduate roles at companies. In my sophomore and junior years, I was a victim of clinical depression (due to conditions created by the pandemic). Interviewers notice that most of the things listed on my resume are from freshman or senior year, and often also notice ...

And it's always the ones I rattle off in about 2 minutes flat that end up in triple digits ^^

I swear there's an iron law of SE. The more time and effort I put into an answer, the lower it scores :)

@Mithical Yeah. It's one of those things where typical media coverage can give you a very skewed perspective. You get more extreme outcomes at both ends and the extreme failures are the ones that tend to get picked up as media stories. But average outcomes for homeschooled kids is significantly higher than the average for the general population.

I can guess why this has the negative downvotes, and I'm definitely biased seeing as I've done it myself, but it's a legitimate negotiating strategy that I think ought to be discussed

A: Faking an offer to get a counteroffer

KazI've done this. It worked out in my favour. Just be aware that it's a very high-risk / high-reward kind of move. So should you do it? Here's my thought process: This works a lot better if you actually have a backup offer. I means you can follow through on your ultimatum if needed. And you know f...

Only if you actually want one of the less senior roles. Otherwise, just roll with it.
Kaz
Jan 31, 2022 17:37
@motosubatsu You and me both. I did precisely one day remotely. I has the whole office to myself for 3 or 4 months, it was glorious.
Kaz
Jan 28, 2022 17:18
Right now, I’m doing 1 month as a consultant. Essentially an extended job interview. And if that goes well, we’ll sit down in a month to nehotiate a permanent position.
Kaz
Jan 28, 2022 17:15
Right now it’s a pilot run out of a prestigious institution, aiming to be spun out as a JV in the next 3 months.
Kaz
Jan 28, 2022 17:13
@zmike Honestly? None.
Kaz
Jan 28, 2022 09:17
I’ve recommended job hunting in the past because it’s a good way to network, and I now have some first hand evidence to back that up.
Kaz
Jan 28, 2022 09:15
Both times, we managed to do the whole process in under a week :)
Kaz
Jan 28, 2022 09:13
That one didn’t work out unfortunately, but I got a call from him last week saying he was running a new startup now and would I like to come build/run their IT
Kaz

Year and a half ago I interview at a healthcare startup. Best application experience ever. The CEO and I clicked exceptionally well.

Found a new job. Well, more like the job found me.

How's the site doing these days?
Kaz
May 20, 2024 08:12
Anyone know if Lamplighter is still alive and kicking?

@Mast Yeah. I guess I'm one of those. Congrats @pacmaninbw

Jul 26, 2023 22:57
@skiwi One of these days, you’re gonna get a call from someone at the wayback machine or the folks over at r/lostmedia. I can see it now ^^
Kaz
Jul 25, 2023 15:57
At this point, I think the only big thing it still can’t do is loops.
Kaz
Jul 25, 2023 15:54
Basically, you can now manipulate arrays of arbitrary size with a single formula in one cell. And you can now create custom named native functions with their own variables names.
Kaz
Jul 25, 2023 15:48
Excel is now officially Turing-Complete :)
Kaz
Jul 25, 2023 15:43
Those are nice. The really cool stuff is things like:
Lambda() (Define custom functions without VBA)
IsOmitted() (Allows you to define behaviours for optional inputs)
Let() (Perform multi-step calculations using named variables)
Map()
Reduce()
Scan()
Sort()
Take()
Filter()
Unique()
VStack/HStack
Chooserows/Choosecols

To me, Dynamic Array formulas are mind blowing. To everyone else I show them to, they’re just pure magic.
Kaz
Jul 25, 2023 09:34
@Mast-onstrike It’s where I do my best work. And with all the awesome functions they’ve added the last 5 years, it’s stronger and more versatile than ever.
Kaz
Jul 25, 2023 02:20
So I’m very optimistic about where it’s going.
Kaz
Jul 25, 2023 02:20
@Phroggie Oh yes. It reminds me of where my old startup was right before they started making serious money. Excepted with 3x the revenue per employee, and I’m coming in as an experienced consultant instead of an analyst.
Kaz
Jul 25, 2023 01:32
@Phroggie Depends what overseas is to you. Still in the UK for the time being. But just started a remote contracting gig for a US startup. And most companies have dropped the vaccine requirements at this point. So I’ll probably be moving somewhere else by the end of the year.
Kaz
Jul 24, 2023 23:40
@Duga Nice to see you’re still going strong ^^

Jul 24, 2023 23:39

@SᴀᴍOnᴇᴌᴀ Old company got sold last year. I had them buy me out. Took the last 5 months off. Found a new job. Well, actually, the job found me :)

Hello everyone, been a while :)

Kaz
Nov 23, 2023 21:54
Just one nit-pick. Nowhere I've ever worked would any of those need or justify a 30-minute speech. Probably 2 minutes max for the "public announcement" part. And then anyone who wanted to discuss/congratulate/etc would all go over and congregate in a corner / separate room / wherever for a while.

Kaz
Nov 18, 2022 22:27
If you're interested in the more general case, ignoring the constraints imposed by the question, then the general limit to human activity is not lack of resources but lack of energy. So the answer would probably lie there in some form.

@ACartonOfEggNogg If you're planning to leave anyway, it wouldn't hurt to ask the COO directly for a raise. Don't assume that different layers of management always communicate with one another or have the same priorities.
