So none of the same troubleshooting steps would apply? Testing permissions for the service, verifying it can actually write files via another method (which you said it cant, therefore showing that you need to grant the account with whoami reporting permissions)?
Aug 29, 2017 10:02
Your account, or the 'whoami' account? Because then it might be just writing to the root of the drive is an issue. Otherwise, issue resolved?
Aug 29, 2017 10:02
Its possible, but I am unsure, try it with valid data.
Aug 29, 2017 10:02
It tells us that your folder within the c drive is writeable, can you change your first command (with ACE) to reference that location?
Aug 29, 2017 10:02
Right, but the %appdata%\local\temp folder isnt where you are writing the file, its C:\test.xls
Aug 29, 2017 10:02
if you want to find out who is running the service and it isnt clear to you, you can always run exec xp_cmdshell 'whoami'
Aug 29, 2017 10:02
Sorry for the confusion, I meant the folder location where the file will end up. Good news if you got access denied, your issue is reproducible! I would reccomend making subfolder (such as C:\Temp) and granting access there to test.
Aug 29, 2017 10:02
@MAW74656 maybe not, but we dont want to know that you can access the files, we want to know if the account running the sql service that creates the file has access. I just gave a method which would create a file in another fashion, there may be others, I just am unaware of them atm.

Yep, I already was trying to find the most generic response since they didnt include a state

SQL Server is pretty good at logging failed logins and the reasons for why, so you should be able to trace the request via profiler checking logins and executions -> profiler on source server -> tcpdump/firewall/port monitoring to ensure network traffic makes it -> profiler on dest server, procmon on dest server
Jun 26, 2015 17:16
If you are using SA/your account and getting different results, your idea about double hop could be a thing, but then I would check for failed logins on the server that is supposed to get the request
Jun 26, 2015 17:15
I misread one of your earlier comments, I didnt see that the user and the service both have permissions to access that file/folder location. The only way I could see it being a permissions issue at that point is if the Jet Provider somehow runs in another context, which I dont know how to trace beyond procmon type of of watching file access.

Hey @Maw74656, moved this to discussion based on SO's advice

@balpha thanks for looking, I guess I found a little bit related to this issue and that was the closest description on the nets and I hoped there was some other morsel not there
May 18, 2011 18:53
Actually I think my problem is different enough, I will just post my own question
May 18, 2011 18:52
Question for the chatters, I found this thread superuser.com/questions/188184/… which was closed as an exact duplicate, but the link it is linked to has been flagged as a dupe and then the dupe was removed, is there some way to see that information?
