6:25 PM
Good question for ELU: is it a cooking metaphor or a car metaphor?
@RegDwighт This notification I got on my phone may amuse you:
It is a notification from the application Weather Bug. It is of course nonsense.

@Cerberus Those are exactly my reasons!

@Mitch I'm sorry.

@Cerberus WhatsApp, Dog?

Haha!

6:31 PM
That joke seriously never occurred to me.

I believe Whatsapp is an American company...

@simchona That's what gave him away. It could have been reasonable and arguable up until that point. But the last question is really the first, and he's just whining.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 ...so it may have occurred to them.

6:32 PM
@Cerberus I know. I loved that bike.
@Cerberus Aren't you under permanent flood warning?

@Mitch As Marie Antoinette would have said, if you've lost your bike, can you just ride a horse?

@Cerberus that doesn't forgive the lack of apostrophe.

@Mitch So the American companies seem to think.
And yet America is flooded more often than Holland.

@Robusto you could table the plan. depending on which country you come from.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 It's pop language?
@Mitch That's one of the most annoying expressions ever.
I always have to think, what did it mean again in which region?

6:34 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 apostrophes aren't in the domain name repertoire. unlike the rest of Unicode.

@Mitch oh, it's their domain name?

@Cerberus 1) there is an infinite amount more of the US than Holland, so te percentages sort of make a difference.

@Mitch No country is ever wholly flooded, and we haven't had a serious flood since 1953.

@Cerberus In one region it mean s to put on the table, in another it means to take off the table. And it may mean both in some regions, and neither on others.

And our dikes have been improved ten, nay, twentyfold since then.
@Mitch I know! It's terrible.

6:37 PM
@Cerberus The entire Mississippi valley is flood bait from Minneapolis to past New Orleans.

That is...unfortunate.
Do you people have uiterwaarden?

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Oh. ha ha. I only assumed. nowadays a company is it's internet presence, even if it's a coal mine.

Floodable strips of land along major rivers?
I don't know what they're called.

@Cerberus that sounds like funny underwear. but I have a feeling (a funny one) that you mean someting else.

Haha.
So do you have funny underwear?

6:39 PM
@Cerberus well, floodable, but not on purpose I don't think.

Land between the inner and outer levies (or winter and summer dikes) of a river?

@Cerberus If you pay attention to the record, I have cream for that instead.

@Mitch Hmm maybe you should try that.
@Mitch Cream is the new funny underwear?

@Cerberus That sounds eminently practical, but....
but you're talking to someone who has no idea.

Haha.
I appreciate your candour and realism.

6:40 PM
@Cerberus No just for ... discomfort, for whatever kind of underwear.
You're drawing me into a pre-teen conversation.

To make sure it's all sticky and fatty down there?
You're drawing me into such a conversation!

@Cerberus let's talk about dikes instead.

Very well.

Have cities ever been flooding in your history, except NO?

6:42 PM
so yes, lots of rivers here (the US) have areas beside them that are considered undevelopable, mostly because people have tried in the long ago past to develop there and it gets swept away every couple years.

Ah.

(but also, lots of that land (similar to the Nile) is good farm land when it is not underwater.

I suppose those would be a kind of...natural uiterwaarden.
Sure, our uiterwaarden are farmland too.
The water eventually recedes.

also for humongous rivers like the mississippi, it sometimes changes course, scuts off a loop, or the loop migrates slowly. The border between Illinois and Missouri hasn't changed, but some of the areas are only reachable by road through the other state.
but you have a natural word for it, bu I can't think of such a word in English and the concept doesn''t seem that common. Im sure a civil engineer would know the technical term for the corresponding thing.
@Cerberus Oh, yeah, sure, and there's always plans to put in barriers in case of future flooding.

@Mitch It is allowed to change course, really?

6:46 PM
@Cerberus what does 'serious' mean?

Why?
Too expensive to reign it in everywhere?

@Cerberus allowed?

The Rhine would never be allowed to change course. Or any other river in Europe, I would think.

I think it does what comes naturally. and people better get out of the way.

Maybe if it were entirely with the confines of a nature reserve?
@Mitch But you just drop some sand around the right places.

6:48 PM
Lots of rivers in Europe are 'civilized' at least when they go through cities (even the smallest (rivers or cities))..
but in the US, few river segments are 'paved' (their banks that is)

I think all rivers here are controlled everywhere, except perhaps in Russia or something, or within natural reserves.
@Mitch Not paved...just controlled.

Ha ha..Russia. Jst like the US. Too big.

by paved I mean some sort of human management (wood or concrete) along the banks.

@Mitch Too thinly populated, rather.
@Mitch Well, we don't have that, except inside cities. And not even there all the time.

6:50 PM
uh...yeah... but I guess if they weren't so thinly populated, the earth would have lots of crazier problems.

Haha.
Like 1000 Paris Hiltons and Putins, rather than one of each?

@Cerberus where is that? what two rivers?

I don't know, it's the Rhine somewhere in Holland.

@Cerberus You mean they're back together? oh...how romantic!

facepaw
The Rhine in upper Germany.
The Rhine in/near the Alps, presumably.
It wouldn't be fun if it changed course all of a sudden!
And ate that little mini-train there.
Look! A Rhine flood!

6:58 PM

7:10 PM
very apropos...

Q: Can wet be used for liquids other than water?

terdonWet can be used to describe being dowsed in liquids such as beer, milk, juice, urine etc. All of these, however, are water-based. Can wet be used for a liquid that has no water? Can you be wet by mercury? Or liquid nitrogen? I know I wouldn't use it for mercury, but that may be because mercury w...

@Mitch I think wetting is a term used when soldering

@Mitch Most unpleasant.

7:27 PM
@JohanLarsson I thought that was whetting, like what you do with a blade.

Ah, well. Shows what I know.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldering is probably a better source

Well, I was just checking in. Now I'm off again. Have a nice weekend.
(I command you)

will do my best, and so will you
wet is also used for the stuff in the vagina?

7:34 PM
Yes.
Split wet beaver.

I think using it for mercury would be ok similar to how it is used in soldering

8:15 PM
possibly (I don't know) in the engineering sense, but someone who doen't solder would never say 'look at the wet solder' or 'gosh, you just got me all wet with your solder' (yes, I know, you'd probably say in that instance 'argghhhhhh')

I don't know much English so no idea

8:40 PM
Turkish police spraying tear gas into a woman's face.
More than a few people have already lost their vision (permanently) from the Turkish tear gas, today and yesterday.

too slow

Probably yes.
At that range, I think it's very dangerous.

disturbing pic, does not look like she needs to be sprayed

Exactly.
Imagine putting a drop of detergent in your eye.
My friend once accidentally put in his contacts without removing the detergent he always keeps them in at night.
He went to hospital immediately, and they told him he was lucky there was no permanent damage.

8:46 PM
It's not that hard to damage your eyes. The only good thing is that it hurts like hell, so you will notice, so you can hopefully rinse them with water and go to hospital in time.

sounds like that could be a pretty common mistake

Yeah.
But I think most people don't use detergent.
I would expect regular lens-cleaning fluids to be less harmful (although they still hurt like hell).
(This only about people who use different fluids for cleaning and wearing: I use all-in-one stuff that doesn't have this problem).

I don't need any yet

> Woman crying and shouting to Turkish police after teargas bombing "please... enough!"

What happened in Turkey?

8:49 PM
Erdogan wants to build a giant mosque on Taksim Square, which is the symbol of Turkish secularism.
A small protest was brutally dispersed by the police.
Then giant protests and riots broke out.
First near Taksim, then all over the country.
The police appeared to be retreating from the square a few hours ago.
Another factor is that construction projects, probably including demolition, are often done by the government without listening to the people who live nearby, and presumably against their best interest.
Oh, it was President Gül who ordered the police to retreat, contrary to PM Erdogan's orders (normally, the PM leads the country).
^ Turkish protests in Amsterdam against the Turkish government.
This is a few hundred metres from here, but I haven't seen them yet.

looks more peaceful in Holland

Yeah. Our police doesn't have any reason to act against the protest.
Protest in front of the European Parliament in Brussels.
I hope Ashton will call Erdogan and politely request that he not use violence against the protesters.
I also hope this won't lead to a coup d'état in Turkey: certain people in the army have been waiting for an excuse.

sounds like you read the news carefully. I'm clueless by choice more or less

I read the website of my newspaper daily.
Why by choice?
I skip the bits I don't find interesting...

news shmews. we're all gonna die.

9:01 PM
And @Matt created a filter to exclude sports news from the page for me! Yay!

I dont care for the online news. just the format. But I feel like a newspaper is killing trees for such a small influence.

@Cerberus I find it depressing and don't really trust media, they angle? the news. angle translated from Swedish dunno if correct

and sports news is an oxymoron

@Mitch Hmm what?

@JohanLarsson I think in the West at least the politics is somewhat inconsequential. nobody is dying (in the western countries) on purpose.
I mean Belgium? (that's the most articulation on the subject I can muster)

9:05 PM
@JohanLarsson Slant.

@Cerberus It's hard to see things I care about quickly on a news webpage (I just don't care for the visual layout...it doesn't lead me to things I want to read). But I feel guilty reading the paper newspaper because it is a total waste of paper. (that is I prefer reading the format of paper)

@Mitch don't understand the dying part

@Mitch Why feel guilty about paper? What's wrong with it?
It's not made of trees, by the way.

9:24 PM
@Cerberus what? what is it made of then?
@JohanLarsson Things are politically stable, there's little worry that a change in government would cause tanks to roll down the street.
but then again,I consider CHina to be pretty stable but they had tanks rol down the street (25 years ago). and I would also have considered Turkey pretty stable. Then again, France had riots a couple years ago.
so pay no attention to what I say.

The UK had riots last year
oh, ok 2011
man, time flies

Sweden had riots last week, think it stopped now.

9:44 PM
@Mitch Recycled clothing, lots of other stuff.

10:05 PM
Oh, shit. Today was the graduation party of a friend.
But I totally missed his Facebook invitation.
I have no idea why, it's in my Facebook inbox thingy.
Damn.

maybe the party is still on?

It's midnight, probably...
But his sister just texted me, "where were you?", implying that it's over by now.

@Cerberus Oh. well, still it's a burden on the garbage industry too. even if recyclig.

Would you go to a graduation party you forgot, at midnight? It started at 8.

I think the technical term is that you 'flaked out' on them.

10:07 PM
@Mitch A small burden...and I use newspapers for all sorts of thinks.
@Mitch Yeah, very technical...
Man, this sucks.

@Cerberus Probably not.

The thing is, he has three events. That's probably why I didn't properly internalise event no. 3.
(A ceremony, a dinner party, and a regular party, each on a different date.)
Ugh, I feel so stupid.

Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad

were you invited to any of the others?
and did you go?
"I'm so sorry, I flaked out/I just plain forgot" or however.

"I was kidnapped, but I got better"

10:15 PM
is that from something?

not at far as I know. I glued together "She turned me into a newt. I got better" from monty python and "I was kidnapped"
which seems like a good reason not to go to a party

@MattЭллен Haha, thanks!

Anytime!

@Mitch Yes, and the others are next week.
So I can still sort of make it up.
Yeah I can't properly show up at half past midnight.

10:20 PM
´äå-

@MattЭллен Haha, that's pretty funny. Is the the holy grail or something?
Or Brian?

holy grail

Perhaps I should watch it sometime. I have seen parts.

yeah. it's pretty good vintage comedy

@MattЭллен nice. will use as next excuse.

10:21 PM
excellent

the next time Im kidnapped.
and it gets better.
otherwise, no.
@JohanLarsson did you just swallow something too hot? Did you just start down the main drop of a roller coaster? Did you just get a paper cut?

@MattЭллен Why "vintage"?

@Mitch actually the dog stepped on the keyboard, I accidentally hit enter instead of backspace
triple ping

10:45 PM
@Cerberus as in "it's aged well"
or something
time for bed

@MattЭллен Haha OK.
Good night!
@JohanLarsson I'm sorry.

why sorry?
I'm sorry about the party on the other hand, idling in chat instead was not ideal.

@JohanLarsson For stepping on your keyboard.
@JohanLarsson Thanks.

keyboard and dog are alright :D

OK.

10:54 PM
I'm getting sleepy though, nite.

Night!

11:10 PM
This is how ordering food in the future will be, as seen from ten years or so ago. Part of this has already become true. It's satire, but it deals with very real problems.
Privacy concerns.
