2:11 PM
I wonder why people talk about distributed relational database systems everyday but no one barely talks about distributed game servers at all

I would guess it has to do with the relative proportion of the two.

where's the money in distributed game servers?
that too

Coffee time. brb

@MattЭллен If you look at whole internet traffic used by everyone in the world
I think 50% is used by uTorrent protocol

porn and other video streaming

2:14 PM
and 40 % is used by some game servers
and 10% is used by HTTP
I think game servers are major player in internet

I think you're over estimating gaming. they are a major player, but 40% is over egging it

Kind of,

most of it is probably something related to Google

let's say 30%

torrents aren't even that popular

2:18 PM
that's not true

that is true

most internet traffic is used by utorrent protocol

do you have any kind of proof? because that stat is highly spurious
youtube alone out strips torrents
if you substitute torrent for streaming media that's probably the case

Low bridge, everybody down.

2:21 PM
My first assumption on why distributed game servers topic is less popular than distributed relational database is
games use P2P a lot

Good reflexes, @Matt.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... oh. just me.

Hullo, @Mr.Shiny.

Super Shiny!

and second is, it is more complicated topic than web scaling

writes commit message

@KitFox does that mean what I think it means?

@MattЭллен I don't know no Whit Monday. All my Mondays are Shit.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes! I am using a repository!

Don't forget to fork it!

2:24 PM
And I am working on the deployment script.

@RegDwighт you should take some of them as holiday. I bet they'd be less shit then

@KitFox yay! opens champagne

Hey, want to hear the breaking drama at the place where I do consulting?

@MattЭллен so you want to turn my Tuesdays into Mondays now? Well, thanks for nothing, pal.

2:25 PM
@RegDwighт it's the most I can do

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 so basically those Facebook, Netflix are included in HTTP 10%
So they don't count

Oh well. I guess nothing is still a thing. Stupid Englishes.

Rest of 30~ 40% are used by gaming

OK, well, I'll sum it up. Blahblahblah Kit is teh awesum.

yes!
I knew it

2:27 PM
That IT manager is just making me look spectacular.

@O0oO0oOO0ooO No, Netflix isn't included in HTTP in that chart

He had us sit in on a meeting with the guy who is supposedly teaching him how to build a cube, and he asked us "What is the specific query for getting all the records from the table?"

We all looked at each other and said "Select * from Products." Even the guy who doesn't know SQL knew that. But not the IT manager.

Web scaling have been developing forever
to be honest

2:30 PM
Note the aggregate bandwidth: Netflix is 24% of the total internet, BitTorrent is 17&, HTTP (i.e. normal websites) 17%, Youtube and other flash video 13%, followed by several other protocols, but also Facebook has its own line because it's so popular.

so the technology is pretty much at the maximum, but why aren't they interested in distributed game servers?

The top 10 categories account for almost 83% of the internet. That leaves at most 17% for gaming.
@O0oO0oOO0ooO why aren't who interested?

We can have another legit massively multiplayer online game like EVE online

Also I dispute your notion that web-scaling is at some kind of peak efficiency. FAR from it.
And I should note that if gaming were bigger than 1.29% of the traffic, it'd bump skype off the list.

@Mr.Shiny, you missed it earlier went I shouted "Low bridge!"

2:33 PM
So games must be less than 1.29% of all traffic, if that chart is accurate. Or at least no single game is bigger than 1.29%.
@KitFox Today I'm the billy goat, taking back the bridge.

who is the troll?

Yeah, OK.

well, using so much internet traffic doesn't always mean great but games must be about 20% of all internet traffic

@O0oO0oOO0ooO sorry, you'll need to back that number up with some kind of citation. some source which makes that claim. I just don't believe it.
Anyway if you claim that it's unfair that people spend so much time on web scaling and not so much time on game scaling, that's just economics. only game devs need game scaling. everyone needs web scaling.

2:37 PM
Well, and game scaling is a special case of web scaling, right?

nope

How is it not?

web scaling is about HTTP

web scaling is about db access and page caching

HTTP request and response cannot be used for real time applications because request and response are very expensive
(unless you have money)

2:39 PM
Hi
Every One.

so people have come up with WebSocket to do realtime task natively on browsers

I wonder if my gp would give me a prescription for xanax.
Or my gf, for that matter.

GP?

General practitioner.

General Pratitioner?
Got you.

2:40 PM
!!/define "general practitioner"
Hey! Who snuffed Caprica?

Girl Probe
@O0oO0oOO0ooO notice that this chat is a realtime application over HTTP

Is there any better series than South Park?

Yes.

@MattЭллен no it uses websocket

And what is that?

2:42 PM
All of them.

All of them?

websocket is inspired from HTTP itself and it shares same ports
but instead of sending a huge headers for every requests and responses,
it sends lightweight data
but it is very similar to HTTP becuse
websocket does Handshaking, also you can set cookies, and etc

I feel the need to point out that this is actually a chat room for English Language and Usage.
I'm not clear why you came here to talk about this.
Especially since we don't know you.

I guess I will stop talking about it

So why did you pick this room?

2:47 PM
@KitFox all medicine does is try to placate a bunch of whiners. If you whine the right way, sure you can get it.

I was in this room when I loaded up my browser and then I changed my nickname
from TemporaryNickName to O0o0ooo0o...

Oh, you. Well, still.

@Mitch like a pacifier for adults?

@MattЭллен exactly.

Yeah, my thumb just isn't cutting it anymore.

2:49 PM
:D

I need something stronger.

I changed my thumbnail to unification of browsers that I am currently using
it symbolises that these are the current major browsers and rest sucks

that hand reconstruction surgery? wouldn't happen unless you complained about 'oh woe is me, my hand was crushed under a high power steel- annealing machine. waah wash waah'

@O0oO0oOO0ooO Right. It was eclipse last time, right?

2:53 PM
@O0oO0oOO0ooO changing your name and avatar at the same time is a good way to make people not know who you are

I noticed that too, but I am sure people get by

Like Jasmine Beluga...or was it Justin Belieber. Who the hell is he?

Dorian Grey

What if you burn the painting? Does he get to stay young forever?

it's not a painting anymore, it's a 3D movie

2:56 PM
Is your avatar now 'Firenet explorer'?

stored holographically

That file format will become obsolete pretty quickly.
The new file format stores the original and lets the copy out into real life.

I'll convert it to datacrystal.

Datacrystal lite. uses sorbitol as it's medium.

'cause I believe in me.

2:58 PM
so Lt. Cmdr. Data is a decendent of Kahn?

HEY!
No spoilers!

no, no, it's cool, that's from Enterprise. not a spoiler

Descendent of Kahan (related to the Cohens of Montclair)

:9635702 offended? no. But I think you are waving numbers around and asking questions based on those numbers and your numbers don't match what other sources are reporting. So I am asking for clarification.
And now you removed the messages.

oh, Data is noonien soong but Kahn is noonien singh.

Hi!

Um. OK. You?
I'm trying to finish that short story.
The one with the cake.

3:24 PM
Wholesale accounts with vendors are useless.

why's that?

They treat you like gum stuck to their shoe.

bastards

And you have to act like said gum to get anything done.

annoying the fsck out of them might be satisfying?

3:26 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 what if you act like explosive gum? like in a James Bond movie

Maybe if I had the time. I have to deal with a lot of vendors, and I have to ask more than once for things almost every time.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 they wouldn't find my threats credible.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 those lazy good for nothing skivers

You get what you pay for.
Threadbare carpet service.

I suppose

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 maybe you should visit them in person, with actual exploding gum.

3:29 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 meh.

"Itemize THAT purchase order, muthafuckas!"

3:40 PM
Have I mentioned lately how much I hate PHP?

not that I've noticed.
do you feel a rant coming on?

Nah, I'm holding back
I just hate php and everything about it.

it's certainly has that reputation

usually I don't have to deal with it because we do everything in Java, which is a million times more sensible than php. And more portable than C#. but we just bought a new chat system for our website and it's php and we have to now set up all this crap just to host it.
and we have to modify it to integrate it.
ugh.
I have a hard time wrapping my head around the notion that someone would make a stateless application server.

treat it like a templating engine if you can.
omg the rain has paused

3:46 PM
well, luckily I don't have to use it much, but just figuring out how to make this app work with mine is annoying enough
@MattЭллен quck! go home while you can!
oops, too late

indeed! but I should wait until 17:00

it's been raining since before I awoke at 6:30
I wonder how long this pause will last

I think it stopped raining here too
might be able to take a walk at lunch

taps fingers anxiously Ten minutes until I can take more cough medicine!
coughs up remaining lung
Maybe I'll take it early.

3:54 PM
@aediaλ you trying to imitate a sea pig being mugged?

Haha. Yes.
I caught some cold that has progressed into a coughing and losing my voice thing, conveniently just at the time when I had to travel and come back and host family and all sorts of stuff.
My youngest brother-in-law graduated college on Saturday in the rain and we had to get up at godawfulearlyo'clock to get there from our hotel and get in. I don't really know how I've been going all weekend except that I think I have some altered perception of time when I know I need to photograph a really really long event and process and share all the photos.
Now we have candids and group photos of all like 10 family members so that'll satisfy the grandmas a bit.

4:17 PM

4:28 PM
Awwh.

I don't feel like eating, but I should eat.

@KitFox it's time for one of them there appetizers

I'd have to leave my office.
I'm feeling sad and not friendly toward the idea of moving.

4:48 PM
House or office moving?

My body.

Oh.
Motion can be hard.
I want more warm liquid to put in my throat but I don't want to get up either.

I have to move so I can get more coffee.

Exactly.

I could put cream and sugar in it. That might help.

4:50 PM
I need like... a dumbwaiter. And someone to put the coffee on a little tray in it and send it back up.
I checked and I'm not running more than a one degree fever at most but I just want to huddle here in my sweatshirt and halfheartedly edit things.
@KitFox I have some honey that my mom brought me after everyone saw heard how I had lost my voice. I might could be persuaded to share.

Aww, thanks. I have my voice though.

5:07 PM
Cute. What?

what what?

What does "This chat is a facebook" mean?

oh, just that I spam my pics here and not on facebook

Oh. OK.

Your puppy?
That's a great action shot.
The ears!!

5:18 PM
@aediaλ yes from Sunday first time he saw water. He like it.

Super cute. I'm glad he liked the beach.

Oh, too cute!
We had a border collie. They don't have floppy ears.

What makes young animals cute? is it the proportions with big eyes and small face?

Probably.
It's so we don't eat them.
I can't remember how I put the build together last time.

5:27 PM
What language?

Uh. Powershell, I suppose.
Also, SQL scripts.
I think I did it in three pieces.

@JohanLarsson Awwh. He's prancing like a pony!

Hmm ... this two-year-old answer got a down-vote a couple hours ago right around the time Kris was last seen on site. Coincidence?

5:45 PM
@JohanLarsson so cute! Nice shot.

2 hours later…
@KitFox why would anyone attack Townsville of all places? Weird!

@Robusto I was in Times Square two days before they unveiled that. :(

8:25 PM
@MattЭллен heheh why did he bother trying the second time

8:36 PM
@MattЭллен did you add the woman from the wedding party?

did I add who to what?
Did I add the woman I was chatting with at my brother's wedding to something?
to Facebook?
ah! no I've not done that yet...

Do it now then?
0 to lose, Life.MaxValue to win

9:01 PM
@JohanLarsson I that that was a private member. Don't you need to call Life.getMaxValue()?

nah. it's bed time!

@MattЭллен What are you, 8 or 80? It's barely nine or ten where you are!

@Robusto Static property?

@JohanLarsson Wouldn't that be Life.MAX_VALUE then? Either that or it's a class of its own, with its own static and dynamic properties.

I would case it like I wrote it in C# think R# agrees.
I rarely snake_case stuff
What is UPPER_CASE_SNAKE_CASING called?

9:15 PM
@JohanLarsson It's just a convention for writing constants.

Yes I have seen it, try to stick to vanilla R# for uniformity though

@Robusto misspelling "indestructible"? That's not an aspiration. I can do that already.
May 23 at 21:22, by RegDwighт
user image
Also, it uses a steel structure. Losers.
And it doesn't fly!

@RegDwighт Yeah? Prove it.

@Robusto indestructible.
Oh shit.

@RegDwighт Plus I'm guessing that plexiglass canopy isn't all LEGO.

9:19 PM
You were right, it's harder than I thought.

@RegDwighт See? Not as easy as you think.
Jinx.

Anyway, work on it.

Now those are some nice photos. Have a look.
You can see the plexiglass, too.

Yeah. I wonder if that guy works at Google and tried to submit that as his 20% project.

9:23 PM
They still have that at Google? I thought they were responsible to shareholders now.

Google is out to ruin the Internet. How else are they going to do that if they don't get their employees to come up with new ideas?

I dunno, so far the ruin of the Internet has been old ideas.

Speaking of ruining shit, did you check out the new XBox? shudder

I still have barely played with the 360!

You can't just have an XBox now. Microsoft has to control your home entertainment utterly.

9:25 PM
Like, thirty hours of Fable, and a bunch of indie games, including that beautiful one you recommended.

Plus you can't play your old games on it. Fuck that, I say.
I'll wait to see what the PS4 has in store, or just play PC games from now on. If that's, like, still going to be possible ...

I'm actually thinking about purchasing a friggin Nintendo 3DS XL. I've been hearing so many good things about it lately, it's no longer funny.
My last handheld was the GameBoy Color.
Twelve years ago.

I think someone showed me one of those. It does 3D without you having to wear special glasses?

Yeah I tried it out in a store once, and it worked surprisingly well, but still, I don't care for the 3D. It's the games that must be da awesome sauce, not the gimmicks.
Though I think I could become friends with Ocarina of Time in 3D.

Ocarina of Time. Interesting title.

9:30 PM
Well. It's been an interesting title for 16 years now.
I bought my N64 for Super Mario 64, but it's OoT that I enjoyed most.
16 years later, the latest installment of Zelda sucks ass compared to it.
I hope they don't screw up the next one.
Though I'd have to buy Wii U for that, shudder.

Never encountered that. But then, I haven't done Nintendo since the 8-bit days.

I'm actually replaying Front Mission right now, for the Famicom. This very moment.
And trust me, it doesn't look anywhere as good in HD.
But the gameplay is just great.

Hmm.

I wouldn't want to exchange it for any of that Call of Duty stuff.
Microsoft has hijacked the consoles, and rode them straight back to the PC market. I don't want to be playing PC games, much less dumbed-down PC games.
So I have to resort to emulation of ooooold stuff.

That's what Steam and GOG are all about.

9:38 PM
Yeah I guess.

10:00 PM
GOG? Good ol' gear?
MAGOG, then is more ancient good ol' gear.
PONG.

I am really stuck in that stupid game.
I seem to be able to go about 100m along the same stretch of road, then the truck stops, at both ends. There is no > or < to go further, at either end.
There is one little side diversion that goes on some grass, around the back of a funny decrepit old building that looks like it used to be an Orthodox church.

Which is, of course, Played On Nerdy Gear.
@DavidWallace You're supposed to water the plant.
Or maybe you're supposed to kill the dragon with your bare hands.

And at one end, there is a large truck, with the words - Smurfit G.D.Haupt Papier-u. PappenFabrik.
There are a couple of kids with bicycles. Both caucasian.
Do I feed THEM to the dragon?
There are no mountains, anywhere around. So this is a flat region of a German speaking country that had Orthodox churches at some time in the past.
SMURFIT is all I have to say!
Ooh, there is a large rock with an illegible plaque on it. And some more caucasian people. That narrows it down.

10:16 PM
Probably you should use the rock on the caucasian people.
Or maybe sacrifice one on the rotting altar. That's always good for getting the attention of the powers that be.

Pfft, it was Russia. And not a Cyrillic letter in sight.

tchrist is really gone

good morning guys,
let's go and eat something

@JohanLarsson He was here a few hours ago.

oh, good, he even is here right now :D

10:44 PM
@JohanLarsson That depends on how here here is.

11:36 PM
Oh God.
--What if I'm not here at all?

11:59 PM
@JosephWeissman I think of you, therefore you are.
